Deco Beauty founder Julianna Dahbura is on the Female Founder World podcast with Jasmine Garnsworthy this week. In 2016 Julianna started a nail polish brand with the hopes of building a direct-to-consumer business. This was the Glossier-era, besties, so relying e-commerce only and building a business on Instagram was very exciting. And although she was doing 8-figures in revenue with her biz Deco Beauty, Julianna realized quickly that nail polish was more of an impulse purchase than an online purchase. In 2020 she thought of a brilliant pivot... and it paid off in a big way.  Since pivoting, she's 3x'ed the already successful business, has launched in retailers like Urban Outfitters, JC Penny, Anthropologie and Free People, and has done collab products with brands like Hello Kitty, Tower28, and Lisa Says Gah. Adam Butt is the Founder and CEO of UN/COMMON, a fully integrated e-commerce and marketing agency facilitating sustainable and profitable growth. In his role, he leads a team of over 50 people to scale $10-100 million international brands, including Liquid Death, Rare Beauty, and Beauty Blender. Adam launched UN/COMMON with only $500 in capital before growing it into a multimillion-dollar agency. He is also a serial investor in companies like American Battery Technology and Postscript. In this episode… With the lines between digital and physical blurred, DTC brands must capture the entire customer lifecycle. Yet these businesses often don't consider the foundational factors that comprise the lifecycle, like content, the customer experience, branding, acquisition, and conversions. How can you prioritize and optimize the customer lifecycle to gain market share and create a distinctive brand? According to multimillion-dollar agency founder Adam Butt, each component of the customer lifecycle must be cohesive. If you have strong acquisition and retention strategies but an inconsistent website experience, your lifecycle is likely to malfunction. However, Adam warns not to segment your efforts into a single channel. Instead, create a comprehensive omnichannel strategy by tracking the entire customer journey and adding incremental value at each stage. Building a personable brand requires cultivating a community of loyal customers through authenticity and organic connection. On this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, the Founder and CEO of UN/COMMON, Adam Butt, joins William Harris to talk about optimizing the customer lifecycle. Adam addresses the issues with specialized agency structures, how he built and scaled UN/COMMON, and case studies of a successful customer lifecycle.

Earned: Strategies and Success Stories From the Best in Beauty + Fashion

In our 115th episode of Earned, Conor sits down with Rea Ann Silva, Founder and CEO of Beautyblender—the egg-shaped sponge that took the makeup industry by storm. To start, we dive into the creation of Beautyblender, and Rea Ann's journey along the way. Rea Ann explains that by cultivating her love of dreaming big, she was introduced to new things, people, and experiences that shaped her life into what it is today. Rea Ann's time in Hollywood production honed her desire to be a makeup artist, and with the assistance of superstars early on in their careers, Rea Ann's celebrity makeup artist career took off with no end in sight. Rea Ann reveals that the majority of her lessons have been learned through catastrophes—like the one she experienced when trying to recreate airbrushed makeup without the airbrushing machine. We explore how Rea Ann's fellow celebrity makeup artist, Kelsey Frye, gave her insights into “on set” procedures, which led to the creation of the iconic sponge. Rea Ann explains that even though the Beautyblender is well known and well loved, there were still growing pains as she evolved from being a “creative at her core” to becoming a business owner. While unpacking Rea Ann's journey to becoming the successful business woman she is today, we learn that managing people was the trickiest part for her to master. Rea Ann explains the double-edged sword that is owning the business all on her own, as well as her thoughts on celebrity-founded beauty brands. Rea Ann emphasizes that in the beginning of the founding journey, every decision matters, and that a lack of passion can be a roadmap to failure. To close the show, Rea Ann speaks about her goal of Beautyblender eventually becoming a heritage business—with someone in her family taking the reins!   In this episode, you will learn:  How leveraging personal skills and relationships can transform a practical solution into a successful business. How to turn "catastrophes" into valuable learnings that empower you to make better decisions in the future. Why creating a product that satisfies a distinct need in the market can lead to organic growth and endorsement by top industry influencers. #099: Beauty Blender – A million little sponges.

HDTV was a great invention that made it tough on the make-up artists. Rea Ann Silva created a solution and a million sales later... Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [Colair Cooling & Heating Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young, alongside Stephen Semple. And, Stephen, the topic that you just told me is Beauty Blender. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: I have no idea. You said this one would probably stump me, and you're absolutely right. The thing that popped into my head was, because you're Canadian and you said Beauty Blender, my only thought was, "Beauty Blender, eh? She's a beauty, eh?" Canadians. I don't know if it's a Canadian product or not, but it ought to be. Stephen Semple: But not. I wish it was. Dave Young: Tell me about the Beauty Blender. Stephen Semple: So Beauty Blender was started by Rea Ann Silva, and it's this teardrop-shaped sponge that's used for applying makeup. Now to wet your whistle, why are we talking about a little sponge for applying makeup? She came up with this idea in 2001, and it's privately owned company, but the best I could find is that they've sold 100 million sponges at 20 bucks apiece. Have I got- Dave Young: Oh, my gosh. Stephen Semple: ...your attention? Dave Young: Do they look like a little cone, almost like an ice cream cone? Stephen Semple: Yeah, or like an egg. Dave Young: I've actually seen them, or pictures of them or something like that. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Well, and look, when you come across something where you find out there's been 100 million of these things sold at $20 apiece when your competitive product is free, I'm like, "Okay, you've got my damn attention. What the hell? What the hell? I need to find out about this." So as I mentioned, it was founded by Rea Ann Silva, and this is really a story of unexpected consequences and opportunities presented by new technology. That's what this is all about, which is what really also caught my attention because, remember, in early 2000, HDTV came out. And for those of us who remember that coming out, it changed the world. The step from high def to other things was not as dramatic as when high definition TV came out in terms of this clarity. And it actually created a huge challenge for makeup because it was now so super clear that every pimple, every pore could be seen because all of a sudden it was just this extra unbelievable clarity. Dave Young: We end up being too good. Stephen Semple: In many ways, yes. And this created an opportunity because makeup folks were really struggling with what to do about this. It was this really big challenge. Dave Young: When Zoom started, and it's still this way, there's a setting on Zoom to enhance your face, enhance your appearance. Stephen Semple: Oh, is that right? Dave Young: Yeah, it all it does is it just basically kind of does the same thing that I think this beauty brush does, which is smooth out the little wrinkles in your face and actually blurs you just slightly so that people don't see the wretched look of your aged face. Stephen Semple: So basically it goes pre-HDTV. Dave Young: I'm taking this way off track, but so high def TV starts to show all the little flaws even in somebody that's well made up. Stephen Semple: Yes, and this is the problem. So in early 2000, Rea Ann is working in Hollywood on the set of the show Girlfriends, and she's trying to make makeup not show up.

Working as a Hollywood makeup artist in the early 2000s, Rea Ann Silva designed a sponge that reshaped the face of beauty. She'd been looking for a technique to simplify makeup touch-ups without worrying about the smudges or streaks that were easily detected on HDTV. Her solution? A teardrop-shaped sponge—hand-cut from a foam wedge—that could apply makeup from any angle, and absorb just enough water to be extra-efficient. Actors and fellow makeup artists raved about the sponge, so Rea Ann cold-called an industry insider—who almost hung up on her before agreeing to listen to her idea. That call led to a fruitful partnership that helped Rea Ann launch Beautyblender in Hollywood pro shops, then Ulta and Sephora. Today, the bright pink teardrop sponge is at the center of a multi-million-dollar beauty brand, available in over 50 countries. Ehlie Luna is a Brooklyn-based, Haitian-American pro makeup artist, creative, and content creator specializing in the beauty space. She served as the key MUA with the New York City Ballet, where she blended theater and fashion by working with designers like Humberto of Opening Ceremony, Valentino, and Stella McCartney. Her creative work has also been featured in commercials and ads for Broadway, and for brands like Kiss, Daily Paper and Facebook. As a content creator, she's worked with brands like MAC Cosmetics, Pattern Beauty, Uoma Beauty, Beautyblender, Macy's and more. If you don't know Ehlie, you will. She truly is a content creator's content creator. Not only is her work stunning, but she really puts her unique spin on everything she puts out, whether it's beauty tips, behind-the-scenes details of content creation, or anything else you might want to know as a creator. This is a two-parter because the conversation was just so good. If you missed Part 1, you can find the link below!  On Ep. 179, we cover: How Ehlie knew it was “the time” to leave her job and go all in on content creation The importance of a personal brand: Why, when, and how she started taking content seriously Her hybrid approach to content creation: How she created a sustainable process and workflow  The business of content creation, brand partnerships, & what you don't learn in more “traditional” roles The pitfalls of being a content creator: The pressures and struggles that people don't see  How burnout can help you identify what's not working, creating work-life harmony (not balance!) & more! The Truth About Marriage, with Heather Havrilesky

Rich Text is a reader-supported project — no ads or sponsors! Coming soon: A subscribers-only episode about Netflix's batshit new reality dating show “The Ultimatum.”In the final episodes of the NBC sitcom “The Good Place,” our intrepid ensemble of Bad Place fugitives finally arrive at the real Good Place: an eternity of ease and joy. Almost immediately, they notice that all is not quite right. The denizens of the Good Place, finally delivered unto their eternal reward, are very f*****g not okay. They're happiness-poisoned, so surfeited with fun and relaxation that they're drowning in their own boredom. They've developed anhedonic armor against the relentless pleasure of heaven. The gang of newcomers looks around, shocked and horrified. All this time they'd been hearing about how rapturously wonderful the Good Place was… and this was the reality?Heather Havrilesky's new book, “Foreverland: On the Divine Tedium of Marriage,” gives us a similar surprise reveal for a more earthly dream: wedded bliss. That moment of shocking reveal is what made the pages of the New York Times, in an excerpt that catalyzed a massive Twitter storm. “Until Bill has enough coffee,” she writes, “[h]e is exactly the same as a heap of laundry: smelly, inert, almost sentient but not quite.” She also writes of his throat-clearing, his sneezes, his monologues on educational sciences. Marriage, she seems to conclude, “requires turning down the volume on your spouse.” Also, she writes, “he's still my favorite person.”Yes, this is what marriage to your favorite person might actually look like — not a rosy fantasia of passionate kisses and ardent speeches and your partner somehow doing and saying everything you'd like at exactly the right moment. It might be sort of a mess, and full of frustrations and disappointments. It might also still be really wonderful, and part of the wonder of it might come through the mess and the frustrations and disappointments. A marriage is a shared project, a puzzle; figuring out, together, how to survive the boring sameness and the human failings can be the most intimate and fulfilling part. That's what Havrilesky wanted to write about: not a perfect marriage, and not a broken one, but the gripping drama that takes place in a strong, happy marriage. The kinds of conflicts that are often breezily referred to as “ups and downs,” or with the vague admonition that “marriage takes work.” We both loved Havrilesky's book (we're long-time fans of her advice column, Ask Polly) and were baffled by the backlash to “Foreverland,” so we were thrilled she agreed to join us for a conversation about her book, marriage and long-term partnership, aging and hanging on to your identity as a woman in this society, and why people had such a strong reaction to her book. This week's episode is free. For more Rich Text episodes, including podcasts on Love Is Blind, The Gilded Age, and Bridgerton, become a paid subscriber! We've been reading…Sheila Heti's “Pure Colour,” a dreamy origin myth and love story. Also, Lydia Kiesling's crackerjack essay on Horatio Alger, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” and the weird mix of American ambition and erotic predation that undergirds our culture's most successful and enduring rags-to-riches fantasies. The disturbing truth she reveals about Alger truly shocked me, though, as she points out, it's not a secret so much as rarely discussed, and her analysis of his life and work illuminates elements of the billionaire romantic fantasy that have never quite clicked into place for me before. -ClaireBlair McLendon's New York Times magazine piece on America's Black billionaires. -EmmaWe've been watching…“Minx,” the HBO Max show about a prim feminist (a Vassar grad and tennis club member) who joins forces with a porn mag publisher (played by a swaggering Jake Johnson) after no one else takes an interest in her consciousness-raising magazine, The Matriarchy Awakens. The twist he adds: nude male centerfolds. It's not groundbreaking — it's pretty classic uptight-lady-meets-charming-dirtbag material — but it's well-executed and fun, and the 1970s hair doesn't hurt. -ClaireAll the screeners of “The Ultimatum.” Netflix's newest reality romance show is a complete mess, but I cannot look away!!!! -EmmaWe've been listening to…The bonus episodes of “Biohacked: Family Secrets” on Apple Podcasts, each of which follow someone whose life and identity was upended by a home DNA test. The stories are utterly gripping. -EmmaThis week's bonus episode of Love to See It! I couldn't make the taping because I was sick, so for this episode, I get to be a fan. Emma went to see The Bachelor Live in New York last weekend, and she recaps the whole bizarre evening with our friend Liviya Kraemer and our old producer Harry Huggins. -ClaireWe've been buying…A chelating shampoo, because apparently Jersey City has ridiculously hard water. (Our faucets have the white mineral stains to prove it.) Hard water can build up in your hair and make it dry and brittle — but chelating shampoo is also super drying?? Seems like a conspiracy. Why is it so hard to have hair? Should I just try to install a showerhead filter? My level of handiness is “Ikea dresser assembly.” -ClaireI took advantage of Sephora's spring sale to get some of my favorites lightly discounted. After months of searching and revamping my makeup routine, I've finally landed on a concealer: ILIA True Skin Serum Concealer with Vitamin C. I grabbed two of those — I have been wearing some light concealer under my eyes and on any blemishes on days when I want to look fresh but don't want to do a full face of makeup. I also grabbed Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, a tube of Benefit 24-Hour Lamination Effect Brow Gel, and a Beauty Blender sponge, because mine has gotten pretty gross. -EmmaGive us feedback or suggest a topic for the pod • Subscribe • Request a free subscription This is a public episode. Sydney Morgan talks growing her TikTok following, dealing with her Ulcerative colitis diagnosis, and shares a stressful self-tape audition!About Sydney:Sydney Morgan is making the world a better place. At just 19-years old, she has already well-established herself as an Actress, Model, Make-Up Artist, and Digital Creator. Her vast digital footprint consists of over 7-Million TikTok followers, 1.6-Million Youtube subscribers, and too many viral videos to count showcasing her outrageous make-up creations. Most importantly though, Sydney is utilizing her platform for good: shining a spotlight on Crohn's & Colitis and the long-lasting impacts of chronic illnesses.Sydney has always had a creative soul, but truly fell in love with the art of make-up when she was in high school – while stuck in a hospital bed. In 2018 during Sydney's junior year of high school, she was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. The chronic inflammatory bowel disease causes inflammation in the digestive tract. With no true cure for the disease, she spent a year in-and-out of the hospital trying different medications and treatments, but unfortunately nothing seemed to work. In October 2019, Sydney underwent emergency surgery to remove her entire colon (her whole large intestine). The result of the life-saving surgery caused Sydney to require an ostomy bag (a pouch that allows bodily waste to pass through a surgically created stoma on the abdomen). In September 2020, Sydney underwent final reconnection surgery – and is now as close to healed as possible when it comes to Ulcerative Colitis.Prior to her diagnosis, Sydney was a cheerleader, gymnast, and track-and-field athlete who dreamt of putting her athletic capabilities on display in college. In 2020, Sydney graduated high school and decided to take a gap year to heal from her recent surgeries. She took this time to lean into her artistic capabilities, and began posting make-up creations on Instagram, and later on sharing them toYoutube and TikTok. Her accounts quickly grew into the massive fanbase she holds today. But Sydney still makes it a point to use her platform to spread awareness of Crohn's & Colitis.Sydney doesn't let her illness define her or hold her back. Instead she uses her platform to spread awareness of chronic illness. Helping others going through similar hardships and ‘invisible disabilities,' while educating those who have not heard of the disease before. Sydney currently works with the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, and actively helps local children's hospitals that specialize in pediatric treatment for chronic illnesses. With her sweet and creative spirit, it's no wonder why big name brands continue to knock on Sydney's door. She has collaborated with major brands such as: Amazon Prime Video, Sephora, Ulta, L'Oreal, Beauty Blender, Dermalogica, Cocokind, Kiehl's, Scentbird, Spirit Halloween, Gym Shark, Fab Fit Fun, Casetify, and many more.Sydney currently resides in Los Angeles, with roots in Pittsburgh, PA. In her free time, she enjoys staying active with weight lifting, hiking, running, and yoga. Talking Points: Please tell our listeners about yourself/ your modeling career  How does it feel to be featured in this year's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue? We haven't seen your new photos yet, but take us back to the shoot. What was that experience like for you? How did you physically prepare for the shoot? What does it mean for you to be part of SI Swimsuit at 57 years young? You already dominated the runway at Miami Swim Fashion Week, how did you do it? Do you believe that anyone at any age or any height can succeed in modeling?  You modeled in the ‘80s for Ford. How has the industry changed over the years? What is your secret? How do you stay in a perfect shape? Do you ever get moments when you feel down? What helps to stay confident and motivated  Guest Kathy Jacobs @ageisbeauty  made her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit debut as part of the 2020 model search. Kathy was a petite model in the '80s with Ford Models and came to the open casting call for SI Swimsuit at the age of 56. In the past year, she did a Thirdlove campaign with her daughter Abigail, a Miley Cyrus video, a Beauty Blender job and Soji beauty work. Kathy is an outspoken advocate for beauty at every age.  And 57-year-old Sports Illustrated bikini model Kathy Jacobs is the silver-haired mother of the movement.  “Old is the new hot,” a smiling Jacobs told The Post. The 5-foot-2 married mom of one is featured in SI's 2021 Swimsuit edition, and is the oldest woman to ever be spotlighted in the issue's 57-year history. (Sports Illustrated's first Swim volume hit shelves in 1964 — the same year Jacobs was born). “I'm closer to 60 than I am to 50 at this point,” said the small town Texas girl-turned-Calabasas, California resident. “So to be in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine representing ladies my age is just the best feeling in the world.” Host Olyasha Novozhylova - NotBasicBlonde @notbasicblonde_ NotBasicBlonde Podcast - @nbbpodcast Olyasha Novozhylova is the founder and creator of Not Basic Blonde, a fashion, and lifestyle blog dedicated to inspiring young women to create an extraordinary style. It's Wednesday (sorry we're a day late!) and we have a lot of celebrity beauty headlines to cover. First up, the Prince Estate has collaborated with Urban Decay on an upcoming collection. Kirbie and Sara share their thoughts (and the missed product opportunities –– When Doves Cry-liner, anyone?). Sara tries to hide her jealousy of Lori Harvey (and fails), who is not only launching a skincare brand, but is testing it on BF Michael "Bae" Jordan. Lil Yachty has us excited about his upcoming nail paint launch, Crete, and we have ideas on how the applicator may be a point of differentiation for the brand. In Instagram drama, people can't stop talking about a Beauty Blender video (let alone the brand's response to the discourse). And we wrap things up with some industry news: Beirsdorf is refuting claims that artificial blue light affects the skin, while Jessica Alba is getting that money, Honey, as Honest Company goes public. Plus, Sara's sweet pout is shouting out a new Chanel gloss-balm hybrid for WOYF that's perfect for getting back into public.Glossangelespod.comFacebook: Gloss Angeles (Join our group: Gloss Angeles Glamgelenos)Instagram: @glossangelespod, @kirbiejohnson, @saratanTwitter: @glossangelespod, @kirbiejohnson, @saratanEmail: glossangelespodcast@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
