Many physicians I know have lots of great ideas and passion. Very few of us know how to convert these ideas and passion into reality. There are many explanations for this and I believe mindset is the major obstacle. Second is fear. Third is the lack of know-how. In this episode, we will have a fire-side chat with Dr. Mike Long who is himself a physician and an entrepreneur. Let's get inspired by Mike. I think we all "want to be like Mike" by the end of this episode. The Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) will welcome Ontario incorporated physicians on January 2nd, 2025. For more than 60 years, HOOPP has been providing secure pensions to Ontario healthcare workers. With more than 460,000 members and 670 participating employers across the province, HOOPP's membership continues to grow. Physicians play an important role in Ontario's healthcare sector, and HOOPP is pleased to announce that HOOPP will open the Plan to eligible incorporated physicians across the province in January 2025. Medical associations have advocated and now doctors have another pension option. What is The Healthcare of Ontario pension Plan? Who was it designed for? Were physicians in the initial calculations back in its establishment in 1960? If not, how do incorporated physicians fit in there now? Does HOOPP even meet the needs of incorporated physicians in Ontario in 2025? Does it fall short and where? Recycling and Energy, Million Can Prodigy. The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guest is Genshu Price. At the ripe age of 14, Genshu Price launched a recycling revolution. He's generating funds to pay tuition for kids older than himself. He's branching into other fields of giving. The sky's the limit. If you have doubts about the HI-5 bottle deposit program, consider this: On O'ahu, before HI-5 went into effect in January 2005, the landfill diversion rate was 41 percent, according to the state Department of Health's Office on Solid Waste Management. In other words, about three-fifths of all of O'ahu's municipal solid waste went to the Waimanalo Gulch landfill.Since then, more than 4.2 billion beverage containers have been recycled through the program, the waste office says, which helped increase the overall diversion rate to 72 percent. It's not just HI-5, of course. The diversion rate includes many other recycled materials, plus waste sent to H-Power, the incinerator that turns trash into electricity and generates about 6 to 8 percent of O'ahu's power. The ThinkTech YouTube Playlist for this show is https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQpkwcNJny6nMw4RxJwoYzhZyXl8mz7hpPlease visit our ThinkTech website at https://thinktechhawaii.com and see our Think Tech Advisories at https://thinktechadvisories.blogspot.com.

Top quotes from this episode “Who knew you could donate a portion of your liver – many of us don't and that portion of your liver you donate grows back in full size and functionality in a short period of time.” —Christine Fiechter “This is a community that has a very hard time asking for help. They don't want to ask for help, they want to sit silently; they are used to being the helper, it's very awkward to ask for someone to donate a kidney.” — Christine Fiechter “We bring to your attention the names of people that have passed through suicide or have passed through medical or accidents, etc., but we never talk about the people that didn't – what about the people that did go and get help, that did reach out, that did ask for support, and we don't read their name, because they were successful.” — RJ Morrison discussing the Code Green “Names not read” tag line “No one knew how many of our brethren took their own lives unless someone reported it, or said so in an obituary, and we still don't know how many died in accidents because they were depressed or suffering from PTSD. It's hard to do good work if you don't have the statistics and the [FBHA Register] is a crucial initiative.” — Kelly Grayson Rate and review the Inside EMS podcast Enjoying the show? Building Sustainability is the New Norm. The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guests are Gail Grabowsky, Kobe Ngirailemesang, Hina Ioane and Sano Tanna. Sustainable development requires an integrated approach that takes into consideration environmental concerns along with economic development. In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.' Today, there are almost 140 developing countries in the world seeking ways of meeting their development needs, but with the increasing threat of climate change, concrete efforts must be made to ensure development today does not negatively affect future generations. Tax Fairness Might Lie in the Carbon Tax. The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guest is Sara Brower. One of the prime causes of today's social unrest is the bifurcation of the economy. The middle class is stable but shrinking; the rich are getting richer and the ultra-rich are harvesting larger and larger of the nation's GDP. Meanwhile, the lower economic 50% of America is stagnating or even trending downward, causing resentment and frustration and opening the way for strongmen to rise to power. A prime cause of economic bifurcation is a tax structure that favors the rich. As Warren Buffet says, “My secretary pays more taxes than I do.” A path to a fair tax system may be by instituting a carbon tax with built-in checks and balances that lessens the burden on the poor and middle class, and ensures that the rich pay their fair share. The creation of a fair system could in turn tamp down the acrimony prevailing on the American social structure. Hawaii Joins the Carbon Capture Crusade. The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guest is Christie Gamble. Carbon dioxide emissions are the prime cause of climate change. The most effective action is to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and transform it into a useful product that lasts for centuries. Some cement companies are injecting liquid CO2 into concrete mixing batches where it mineralizes into calcium carbonate, a strong stable compound that hardens concrete. (Interestingly, calcium carbonate may be taken as a supplement to harden bones, and is closely related to baking soda.) The CO2-strengthened concrete reduces the volume needed to achieve required strengths, resulting in a lower carbon footprint and lowering transport weight and volume. CO2-stregthened concrete also reduces the "cure time" needed to harden the concrete mix to the required moisture content, reducing construction time. CO2 can comprise up to 20% of the volume of concrete. Energy CO2 has already been removed by one carbon concrete company to remove from the atmosphere CO2 equivalent to 53 million cars. Using Shipping Containers as Low Cost Homes. The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guest is Purnima McCutcheon. One of the core problems faced by wealthy nations worldwide is the plight of the houseless. A few architects have reached an innovative way of partially solving the problem. They build multi-family, multi-floor buildings on small urban sites using shipping containers which are by design are extremely strong and durable. The complexes include 160 to 480 square foot living spaces, and common areas include 24/7 access to bathrooms and drinking water, and offices for supportive services. The key target populations include vulnerable women and children and the chronically homeless. Amenities include roof gardens with edible plants, balconies and plenty of sunlight brought indoors. The designs are replicable and sustainable. Deconstructed Old Homes Are Very Valuable. The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guests are Ariana Whalem and Harley Didriksen. Old homes can be very valuable--the fine oak, cedar or redwood boards, the craftsman cabinetry, the old mirrors and doors--true collectables. Concrete is crushed and reused as fill material. Old rebars are made of very high quality steel. Deconstructing is a well-paid skill, adding to Hawaii's tax base. An enormous amount of energy goes into making and shipping building materials. Using this "embodied energy" reduces CO2 emissions. Destruction, on the other hand, only adds to our landfill woes and requires new energy-intensive materials. Energy Codes Build Energy Efficiency. The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guest is Duane Jonlin. Energy efficiency in buildings--using the best building materials so that homes and buildings have near thermos-like performances--and selecting the highest-performing air conditioners, furnaces and appliances is by far the quickest and most cost-effective path to building a clean energy economy nationwide. Adopting building codes that ensure that the best materials and equipment are used scales efficiency to include hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings every year. What's more, adopting energy efficiency building codes causes market transformation. Manufacturers shift to making high-efficiency equipment and those products make their way to hardware stores, allowing the DIY'er to reduce his or her utility bills. Nuclear Energy May be a Clean Energy Option. The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guest is Jessica Lovering. While Hawaii has an ambitious renewable energy portfolio (100% of electricity from renewables by 2045), the state's mix is still 70% fossil fuels. Puerto Rico examined the option of small nuclear energy and found it would benefit the reliability and resilience of their grid at a reasonable cost. Hawaii would likewise benefit from such a study. Even with significant growth in renewable energy and cost reductions, it will still be difficult to balance the grid without a low-carbon baseload such as nuclear energy. New nuclear designs are smaller, and factory fabrication could make them faster and cheaper, making them an attractive option for a balanced clean energy grid. Title: Episode 37 Code green for humanity ahead? An interview with Etienne White, President for Brands for Good Author(s): Worm, Loa Dalgaard
It's that age-old football cliche–unstoppable force meets immovable object. In this case, the immovable object is the historically good Bison defense versus the high-flying Jackrabbits offense. For the Bison to bring the Dakota Marker back to Fargo from Brookings, Code Green needs to clamp down on an SDSU attack that lit them up for more than 300 yards rushing last spring in Fargo. Cam Miller continued his strong play last week, throwing for three touchdowns. Swany and Brady talk about Miller's performance and the Bison offense looking like the unit we thought they'd be. We also discuss what, and who, will decide this game, and tell you why. Turn the radio up, and let's talk about the Rock, this week, on the Bison Illustrated Podcast!
A week after a 34-20 demolition of a Northern Iowa program on the rise, the Herd looks to spoil Illinois State's homecoming. Quincy Patterson torched the Panthers for four touchdowns, including a dynamite 85-yard precision guided bomb to Christian Watson. Watson, the most explosive offensive weapon in the FCS, finished with five catches for 163 yards and a score. A big punt return by Jayden Price, followed by a strip sack by Will Mostaert, setup two Bison touchdowns early in the second half. Swany and Brady talk about a Herd offense on the rise, and the suffocating Code Green/"Best Friends Defense." Swany says he expects NDSU's offense to be aggressive in attacking the Redbirds today, and ISU's problems getting off the field on third down will be costly against the Herd. Patterson's growing chemistry with his receivers, combined with his running skills and the Bison ground game, are heating up. The guys also discuss some surprise teams in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, and a slate of big matchups this weekend - including North Dakota at Southern Illinois, and South Dakota at UNI. The Bison offense continues the march, this week, where champions come to talk, on the Bison Illustrated Podcast!
North Dakota State ruined the University of North Dakota's party at the Alerus Center last weekend, riding a dominating performance from Code Green to a 16-10 win. The Herd did just enough offensively to down the Fighting Hawks, but will undoubtedly look for a stronger offensive showing this weekend against one of the hottest teams in the FCS, Northern Iowa. While the Herd has won seven in a row against the Panthers, the Bison will need to be on top of their game against a resurgent UNI team featuring new signal caller Theo Day. Day, a Michigan State transfer, led an explosive Panthers offense to a 34-7 thrashing on Saturday against Youngstown State. Swany and Brady deep dive into the UND game, some curious fourth down decision making, Code Green, and, of course, the Bison offense. The guys say that some fans need to back away from Crazy Town in going bonkers over a "mere" six point win against a Top 10 team and in-state rival. Swany Says the Herd will be tested by a very good Panthers team. The Herd looks for some homecoming fireworks of its own, this week, on the Bison Illustrated Podcast!
