In this episode of A Common Concern: The Climate Justice Podcast, Kate Cook discusses workers' rights and climate change with Kalina Arabadjieva of the European Trade Union Institute. From the principles and standards of the International Labour Organisation to the provisions of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, from the rules of the EU Green Deal to the three pillars of the Aarhus Convention, there are many points of intersection between international labour law and climate law. Kate and Kalina discuss the potential for mutual reinforcement in relation to the protection of workers both from the direct impacts of climate change, including heat stress, and in relation to securing a just transition for the workforce in the context of decarbonization. Is closer integration between workers' rights and climate law a key way to secure climate justice in the face of colossal challenges across the world?

South African farmers exporting table grapes, citrus, apples, and maize may face challenges adapting to the EU's Farm to Fork Strategy, which aims to reduce pesticide use and promote sustainable farming under the EU Green Deal. The strategy targets a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and promotes organic farming but could impose stricter standards on exporting nations. Hosted on Acast. 2025 starts the same way 2024 ended: with a shifting political landscape. While Trump was re-elected in the US, the new European Commission announced an Omnibus proposal that would serve its simplification agenda. These events raise concerns about the backlash against the environmental and sustainability policies adopted in the last 5 years to ensure the green transition of the economy. But what is really going on? How much do we have to worry and how should those committed to the sustainability transition in business respond to this threat? This week on the podcast, Richard Howitt is joined by Alberto Alemanno, academic and founder of The Good Lobby and Patrizia Heidegger, deputy secretary general and Director for European Governance, Sustainability and Global Policies at the European Environment Bureau. Together they offer insights on the implementation of the EU Green Deal and on what environmentalists should be prepared to do to push forward the just transition. You will hear more about: What's causing the rise of a de-greening pattern How NGOs should deal with the backlash against sustainability legislation The newly created uncertainty around the implementation of the EU Green Deal The new Trump administration and its effects on the ESG backlash The international dimension of the EU Green Deal Listen in and follow us on LinkedIn!

Microsoft has announced the launch of its latest Dream Space TV series, Code Green, aimed at providing teachers across Ireland with new STEM teaching resources to inspire young students to become sustainability champions in their schools and communities. The release of the Code Green series coincides with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Week 2024, a Government of Ireland led initiative, taking place from September 20th to 29th. Developed by Microsoft, in collaboration with Irelands Knowledge Centre for Carbon, Climate and Community Action (IKC3) at Munster Technological University and supported by RTÉ Learn, Code Green provides hands-on educational resources designed to help young people understand the role they can play in creating a more sustainable future. Furthermore, students are given the opportunity to develop their STEM skills and are challenged to apply those to advance sustainability in their school community. Aligned to the EU Green Deal 2050, each of the six freely available on-demand Microsoft Dream Space TV Code Green episodes focus on a different aspect of sustainability, from building eco-friendly vehicles and coding energy-saving programs to using AI tools to monitor biodiversity and creating sustainability plans for schools. The series is being rolled out on RTÉ Learn over a six-week period from September 27th. Upon completion of the six episodes schools will have the opportunity to enter the Code Green challenge and submit an entry to participate in the Code Green Showcase event, which will take place at Microsoft's campus in Leopardstown, Dublin in June 2025. The Code Green resources being unveiled today align fully with the Government's Second National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development and its priority of empowering and mobilising young people to upskill and take action for a more sustainable future. Each Code Green episode is designed for easy integration into the classroom, with detailed teacher guides, worksheets, and curriculum links to support the Irish primary curriculum. Commenting on today's announcement, James O'Connor, Microsoft Ireland Site Leader and Corporate Vice-President of Microsoft Global Operations Service Centre, said: "We are delighted to be marking SDG Week 2024 by rolling out the new Microsoft Dream Space TV series - Code Green. With the help of the latest series available on RTE Learn, young people will have the opportunity to develop their STEM and AI skills and put them to the test to advance sustainability in their own school community. "With digital technology transforming our lives, work, and education, it is crucial that every young person can engage in STEM and AI learning and think critically about the world around them. Through Microsoft Dream Space and its many initiatives, we are helping the next generation to develop the skills that are required amid the twin - digital and green - transitions." Dr Helena McMahon, Director of Ireland's Knowledge Centre for Carbon Climate and Community Action (IKC3) at Munster Technological University, said: "MTU is delighted to partner with Microsoft on the development and roll-out of Code Green. The IKC3 and Microsoft Dream Space team collaboration has brought together the brightest of minds in programme design, sustainability, and STEM education. This new educational resource for teachers and students nationwide aligns with the EU Green Deal 2050 themes and supports our joint commitment to promote both STEM and sustainability education that build green and digital skills. We encourage every primary school throughout Munster and across the island of Ireland to join us in this exciting learning journey towards a more sustainable future." Speaking about the initiative, Suzanne Kelly, Group Head of Children's & Young People's Content at RTÉ, said: "RTÉ are thrilled to be once again teaming up with Microsoft Dream Space, this time to explore how technology can be a force for good in tackling climate change. Will the new EU Parliament roll back plans to restore nature, and what impact would this have on farmers and our environment? The Cyprus Women's Bicommunal Coalition is mobilising support for a more inclusive approach to solving the Cyprus problem.
Notwithstanding the pivot to the right in France, Italy and Germany during parliamentary elections earlier this month, the EU Green Deal – the continent's flagship framework in making Europe climate neutral by 2050, is alive and well (in aggregate). However, Ehsan Khoman, Head of Research – Commodities, ESG and Emerging Markets (EMEA), believes that a new narrative and mindset shift is now needed to successfully implement the set of policy initiatives, as the shift to the right may witness an integration of the green agenda with other major economic and social considerations, such as industrial policy, competitiveness and affordability considerations. Whilst this could signal a more restrained approach to greening the European continent, it can equally help mitigate political resistance by encouraging more thoughtful public policy.

Helmut wrote: “I have written a poem about what friendship and friends really are. It's in German and I can't translate the verses - but I can translate the meaning: FriendsPeople come, people go.People's actions move being.Nothing that exists can exist forever,Big worries become small. We hope for the new year. That everything will be better.Secret wishes will come true.Peace is coming to earth. Faith in the power of love.It alone will be eternal. How it creates hope in the heart.Only its power will set us free. Friendship will only be revealed,When the world leaves you alone. It holds in distress and in danger,And is firm in all times. Life in the world is short. So let the false friends go.Only what keeps the strength in us,Will last for all time. Existence lacks eternity,When everything fades, everything goes. But our hearts grow wide,When friendship lasts until death. Thank you, Helmut! The ePOP video competition is open! Email overload! This week's quiz: On 11 May, I asked you a question about disinformation. We wrote an article that week about the disinformation campaign in full swing ahead of the European parliamentary elections: “EU's Green Deal the target of online disinformation ahead of polls”. The Green Deal – a key project of the European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen - is, as we wrote: “an ambitious commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, making the 27-nation bloc the ‘first climate-neutral continent'”.You were to re-read our article “EU's Green Deal the target of online disinformation ahead of polls” and send in the answer to this question: how have disinformation campaigns portrayed the EU Green Deal proposal for phasing out petrol-driven cars? The answer is, to quote our article: “Determined to drive down dependence on fossil fuels, Brussels wants to phase out the sale of new petrol-driven vehicles by 2035 in favour of electric cars. This has been seized upon by many as an attack on individual freedoms, with social media users across Europe sharing misleading claims that Brussels wants to ban the repair of vehicles over 15 years old, or even seize and scrap them.” What the European Commission actually proposed in July 2023 was a revision to a text on so-called “end-of-life vehicles” to better manage their recycling. In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question, suggested by Jayanta Chakrabarty from New Delhi, India: “Whom would you consider more important, family or friends, and why?”Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to us!The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Dipita Chakrabarty from New Delhi, India. Dipita is also this week's bonus question winner. Congratulations, Dipita! Also on the list of lucky winners this week are Hansha Biswas, a member of the RFI Pariwer Bandhu SWL Club in Bhilai, India, and RFI Listeners Club members Tanting Ghogomu from Ottawa, Canada; Arifa Alam Dolon from Natore, Bangladesh, and Zenon Teles, the president of the Christian - Marxist - Leninist - Maoist Association of Listening DX-ers in Goa, India. Here's the music you heard on this week's program: The Overture to Cosi fan tutte by Mozart, performed by the Orchestre de Strasbourg conducted by Alain Lombard; the “Ode to Joy” from the Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven, performed by the Stringspace Quartet; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer, and the terzettino from Act I of Mozart's opera Cosi fan tutte, sung by soprano Virginia Tola, mezzo-soprano Adriana Mastrangelo, and bass-baritone Víctor Torres. . Do you have a music request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.frThis week's question ... you must listen to the show to participate. EU parliamentary elections in June are fast approaching and the decibels of debate surrounding the Green Deal legislation are rising. Certain investors have suggested that a shift in political attention away from the Green Deal and that recent pushback and watering down of some regulation is negative for climate action in Europe. Ehsan Khoman, Head of Research – Commodities, ESG and Emerging Markets (EMEA), discusses this shift in focus and whether this is a reflection of a broader ESG pushback, or whether a shift in narrative mindset is warranted to ensure a successful implementation post June's EU parliamentary elections. Fifty years after Portugal's Carnation Rvolution, we journey through the mutinous streets of Lisbon, plus the EU's Green Deal is in trouble: can it be saved? We also focus on the topic of land — Danish land that's been deliberately flooded, Bulgarian land deliberately left un-tilled and Italian land bought up by the mafia. Finally, why Slovakia's brown bears have become a big wedge issue.
The EU is adopting an unprecedented package of climate, energy and environmental legislation. The Green Deal has been an essential component of the European Parliament's work over the last five years, and of the European Commission's agenda. EU member states have highlighted the importance of the energy transition in light of the war in Ukraine. But only a few months remain to close important policy bills before the EU elections. Meanwhile, environmental activists have talked of a "green fatigue" in Brussels. Is that justified? We delve into the issue with two MEPs.
Part 2 - “We have to find the courage to do something different…” Following on from Episode 1, we delve further into the role of law in sustainability. 2023 saw a marked rise in legal cases being brought against businesses and governments, as well as the tightening of regulations and guidelines around not only what businesses can do, but what they can say. The reality Alexandra explains is “the law takes time; for case law we need the means, will and resources to bring cases forward and for legislation we need governments to listen.” Earth Law Centre supports the law, “very rarely will the law be the real generator of change, for example, the EU Green Deal – the law won't drive change at the core, the law is what will influence change, it will force it. The law is a tool, and it can be a carrot and it can be a stick.” This raises a big question for business, ‘are you going to be a pacesetter or are you going to wait to be regulated?' We definitely need more pacesetters. Alexandra talks about “Four circles of service” looking at nature on the board, in professional practice, across project development and within cultural evolution, and a need to drive the real change towards an eco-centric approach and way of thinking. She explains that, “nature governance, is about responsibility, accountability and wisdom – we have all the knowledge that we can ever want, we have access to data, expertise and technology and we know what we have to do and stop doing – the question is, do we do that?” We naturally progress into the role of leadership and the need for honesty to make the right decisions to do something good. And, also the role Marketers play, and the need to be more responsible when it comes to the stories they tell and how we need to break away from some of the conditioned thinking so that we get creative and use our imaginations again. Marketing's role in Nature governance is still very much a concept, but we need to be open to it and start to think differently. The need for a shift in consciousness is now. We discuss how ‘you' can be the change and the need to have the right conversations to grow our understanding to get to the experience you want to create. Alexandra poses another big question, which we'll leave you with, “what needs to change today in order to achieve the vision for tomorrow?” - We'd love to hear your thoughts! But what exactly are A2L refrigerants? Named after their ASHRAE safety classification, A2L refrigerants exhibit mild flammability, low toxicity, and a low global warming potential (GWP). This category encompasses hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and HFO blends. A2L refrigerants mirror the operational characteristics of legacy refrigerants while presenting a safer profile compared to ammonia and hydrocarbon-based refrigerants. As the world grapples with climate change, A2L refrigerants have emerged as a substitution for older, high-impact refrigerants such as HFCs and HCFCs in air conditioning and commercial refrigeration setups. A2Ls are pivotal in aiding businesses to meet global objectives outlined in agreements like the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment, as well as regional regulations such as the U.S. AIM Act, Canada's ODSHAR, and the targets of the EU Green Deal.
EU leaders are hailing their drive to make Europe the world's first carbon-neutral continent by 2050 as a "Man on the Moon" moment. But is Europe's giant leap towards net-zero carbon emissions at risk of becoming a stumble in the dark, amid a rise in right-wing populism that has seen more and more Europeans turning against green policies?

The European Commission has adopted a set of proposals, known as the European Green deal, with the aim of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU) by at least 55% by 2030, and achieving zero net emissions by 2050. In addition to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), another pillar of this policy is the creation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), a new border tax aimed at equalizing the price of carbon paid for EU products operating under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) with that of similar imported goods.CBAM is likely to impact the cost of carbon in global supply chains, and also has reporting obligations beginning as early as October of 2023, and the regulation has raised many questions. Which companies will it impact? What products are in scope? Will it impact companies that don't do business in the EU?This week, Heather Horn was joined by Barry Murphy and Niels Muller, PwC partners who are following CBAM, to share their insights on what it means and what companies can do now to prepare. In this episode, you'll hear discussion of:2:26 - An overview of the EU Green Deal and CBAM9:37 - How CBAM is intended to spur global alignment on carbon pricing13:26 - Effective dates, applicable products, and other details of the regulation25:58 - The current status of verification (audit) requirements and how these may evolve29:39 - How CBAM could potentially impact the cost of carbon in global supply chains33:59 - Recommendations for companies that want to begin preparing for CBAM ahead of the October 2023 effective dateWant to learn more about CBAM? Enacted in 2021, China's National Carbon Market based on tradable performance standard, was promoted as a new effort to engage with international climate policy. It's too early to assess the emissions reduction impact of the so-called biggest carbon market in the world. Despite of the essential differences of market design, contextual institutions and the mild effects of the California's system in delivering carbon emissions reduction and environmental justice, Professor Alex Wang of UCLA School of Law explains why China may still learn from California's Greenhouse Gas Cap-and-Trade Program. In this episode, the discussion also touches the new direction of climate policy in the context of EU Green Deal and U.S. Inflation Reduction Act. Professor Wang shares his opinion on the academic exchange challenges facing scholars from both U.S. and China.

In this special series, co-host Sarah Howard takes the Track Two Podcast on the road doing interviews with leaders from various industries about this fast-growing term: ESG. It was a headline topic at the annual gathering, as climate change and social issues continue to rise in the agenda of leadership conversations everywhere. In this episode, Sarah speaks with Harald Neidhardt, the founder and CEO of Futur/io, a think tank and leadership learning institute based in Germany. Their conversation explores the leadership role of the EU when it comes to compliance and discloses for ESG reporting following the adaption of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, which supports the EU Green Deal a set of policy measures intended to combat the climate crisis by transforming the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy, with no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. The directive is part of the bigger Sustainable Finance package enabling the Green Deal by helping to channel private investment behind the transition to a climate-neutral economy. There are three primary takeaways from their conversation: First, the role of collaboration and cross-sector learning. The challenges we are facing in the world today and complex and intersectional. Bringing together a diversity of experience and perspective has the potential to unlock insights that otherwise we don't have access to when operating within silos. Second, the need for new narratives. As conveners, Sarah & Harald instinctively understand that the language we use is the foundation for building new shared narratives of what is possible. When it comes to the future, climate change, social stability, and digital lives, we all need more imagination to begin shaping what that future can look like. And finally, the policies being passed in Europe are on the front edge of what is coming to the rest of the world. We are in the early stages of systems change when it comes to how business is conducted. We are certainly not out of the woods yet, it will require commitment, vision and political will to bring forward the kind of transformation needed for a sustainable and just future for all.
The European Union set out its ambition on how, by 2050, it will become the world's first climate neutral continent in the European Green Deal in 2019. This ambition has been followed by a series of regulatory reforms, the most notable of which are the proposals in the European Commissions ‘Fit for 55' package which aims to facilitate the EU meeting its interim target of 55 percent emissions reductions by 2030. On this episode, Richard Lin, Partner and Head of Compliance Carbon Market, KPMG China, Nicole De Jager, Senior Manager ESG Tax, KPMG in the Netherlands and Pilar Galan, Partner, KPMG in Spain to take a deep dive on this topic.

Gas Networks Ireland has announced the construction of Ireland's first large-scale renewable gas injection facility, starting in summer 2023. Gas Networks Ireland CEO Cathal Marley is due to outline the Green Renewable Agricultural Zero Emissions (GRAZE) renewable gas project, which involves the construction of a central grid injection (CGI) facility in Mitchelstown, county Cork. The CGI facility will process biomethane, a renewable gas made of farm and food waste, from up to 20 local farm producers. Using a process called anaerobic digestion, the waste will be converted into a gas that is fully compatible with existing Irish gas networks, vehicles, and other technologies. Mr Marley said: “Ireland's national gas network must be repurposed to transport renewable biomethane and hydrogen at scale. Gas Networks Ireland is uniquely placed to deliver the necessary change, and with projects such as GRAZE, we're already working hard to help deliver Ireland's sustainable energy future.” This biomethane could be used in industry, transport, home heating, and power generation, with a plethora of other potential. As biomethane is carbon neutral, it can significantly reduce emissions when replacing other forms of natural gas. Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, said: “This project shows how we can diversify our gas supplies, by speeding up the roll-out of renewable gases like biomethane. Projects such as this will reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels, which is especially important now in the context of the war in Ukraine. “The Government's National Energy Security Framework, which sets out how Ireland is prepared to deal with potential shocks to our energy system, has highlighted the need for alternatives to natural gas, such as biomethane and hydrogen, to be developed to enhance Ireland's security of supply and provide additional diversification for Ireland's energy mix”, he added. This process can also help support net-zero goals in the Irish agri-food sector. The agriculture-heavy Golden Vale area surrounding Mitchelstown is an ideal place to begin this project. Mr Ryan said: “A domestic biomethane industry would not only support the decarbonisation of the agricultural sector, but it would also provide significant opportunities for rural communities and facilitate sustainable circular economies, with businesses powering their operations via renewable gas made from their own waste.” “It will contribute to our broader climate goals – of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050”, added Mr Ryan. At a maximum capacity, the facility will be able to meet the energy requirements of up to 64,000 homes. Mr Marley said that the rollout of biomethane energy would lead to “up to 6,500 jobs” being created, primarily in rural parts of Ireland. GNI is also currently in the process of advancing plans to add hydrogen to its network in the future. While the Irish gas network currently has no hydrogen, it is believed blends of up to 20% hydrogen could be transported along existing gas lines. It is hoped that by 2040 Ireland could be connected to the new European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) network. If successful, the GRAZE project could be replicated in other locations around Ireland. The project is supported by the Climate Action Fund, which has given it more than €8.4 million in funding as part of the Government's National Energy Security Framework. The Climate Action Plan has set a target of around 3% of Ireland's gas usage to be replaced by biomethane before 2030. The EU Green Deal has pointed out biomethane as a valuable tool in decarbonising European agriculture and energy, with Ireland highlighted as having the highest biomethane production potential per capita in Europe due to its large agricultural sector.
There are some potentially big changes coming in the EU regarding chemical management under the new Green Deal which will directly impact the cosmetics industry. Joining us for this episode is regulatory toxicologist, Fred Lebreux Ph.D., CEO at BIORIUS. What's happening, how might it impact the cosmetics sector, and how can brands best prepare for these changes? One of the biggest suggestions for the final question is trying to stay on top of what's happening, and this episode is a great start! Hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did!
