When it comes to creating sustainability for your business, there's no better astrology placement to look to than the 10th house. Most of the 10th House's fame comes from the assumption that this is where the Midheaven lies. In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Jack Groh, Director of Environmental Programs for the National Football League (NFL). He is also the Senior Vice President of Strategy for Legacy Sustainability, an independent consultancy that he and his wife, Susan Groh manage to develop and implement climate mitigation and adaptation strategies around major sporting events.Jack and Susan have been minimizing the environmental impacts of major sports events for 30 years, including the NFL's major special events. They also designed the sustainability plan for the NCAA College Football championship series. They are widely recognized for the unique and impactful community projects they develop and have consulted on sustainable transportation development, municipal waste diversion, building sustainability, and renewable energy.Ted and Jack discuss his varied background, growing up in Massachusetts, attending UMass Amherst, then going on to teach straight out of college before going back to school for journalism, spending some years TV reporting, before diving into consulting in communications and PR for companies around environmental issues. Since then, Jack and Susan Groh, now based in Warwick, Rhode Island, have been at the forefront of making the NFL and other organizations more environmentally conscious. In 1993, they developed the first environmental initiatives ever implemented at any professional sports league in the United States at Super Bowl XXVIII in Atlanta, Georgia. Their journey began with simple recycling projects during the Super Bowl and evolved into making the game the greenest professional championship in the world. Their efforts extend beyond visible actions, including recycling, food recovery and material repurposing, to making a substantial difference in the environmental and community impact of large events. Through their independent consulting efforts at Legacy Sustainability, they aim to leave each community better than they found it and inspire others to do the same. Some of the green legacy programs they leave behind in every community include planting trees, creating pollinator gardens, habitat restoration, equipment donations and school supply programs, recycling and composting, taking excess food and drink off to local food banks, and using renewable energy and helping organizations get renewable energy certificates. Jack highlights the Miami Coral Reef Project, Super Kids Super Sharing event, and the NFL Green Super Bowl LVIII Program launch.

But implementing such a global baseline effectively goes beyond simply setting standards – it requires a new set of capabilities, infrastructure, knowledge, and talent in economies around the world.New sustainability reporting requirements in jurisdictions around the world have resulted in the need for companies to take stock of their own capacity to produce high quality sustainability disclosures, as well as the capacity of players in their value chains who will provide inputs to their reporting. In this episode, Heather Horn sat down with Mardi McBrien, Chief of Strategic Affairs & Capacity Building at the IFRS Foundation, to discuss how the IFRS Foundation has been working to build capacity, and how companies can best navigate the overall sustainability reporting environment moving forward. In this episode, you'll hear:2:31 - A refresher on capacity building and its importance in sustainability reporting4:38 - A discussion of the need for upskilling in various sectors to meet global sustainability reporting standards8:43 - An overview of the drivers of the IFRS Foundation's focus on capacity building17:14 - Advice on implementing new business processes and enhancing communication with suppliers to prepare for new disclosure standards21:33 - A discussion of the progress made in capacity building and the role of the IFRS Foundation's partners in this process29:00 - An overview of the IFRS Foundation's “three pillar approach” for capacity building35:19 - Where listeners can go to understand where the ISSB is headed with standard setting and what is next for companies preparing to reportLooking for the latest developments in sustainability reporting? Building Sustainability is the New Norm. The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guests are Gail Grabowsky, Kobe Ngirailemesang, Hina Ioane and Sano Tanna. Sustainable development requires an integrated approach that takes into consideration environmental concerns along with economic development. In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.' Today, there are almost 140 developing countries in the world seeking ways of meeting their development needs, but with the increasing threat of climate change, concrete efforts must be made to ensure development today does not negatively affect future generations. Welcome to Season 2 of the Be Empactful Podcast. This is Episode 6 where we have a guest who believes that economic resilience and environmental sustainability are just 2 facets of a company's success today and should not be treated separately. Sreela Pillai Roy is a Financial risk advisory turned Co-Founder of Urvija, a Sustainable Personal Care Products company, while also helping in her family's agri based business. She is passionate about the environment and especially against using chemicals in her products which either contribute to deforestation or harm the community or environment. Sreela shares her journey of a video of how deforestation of forests for Palm Oil was killing the orangutan species, motivating her to start up a company which led to Urvija, India's 1st “No Palm Oil” certified Personal care products company - a key milestone for the company and Sreela herself. Sreela speaks about how they researched and identified locally available native ingredients that can be used in personal care products instead of Palm Oil, thus contributing to the sustenance of the environment and natural habitats of various species. This also helped in growing local market sources and communities which has improved the local ecology - a truly circular and sustainable model that looks at economy, ecology, and environment. A simple wish she carries is that if this podcast and outreach can save 1 orangutan or preserve 1 habitat, we have started our journey back. It is this credibility & sincerity towards the cause which has resulted in Urvija getting certified by the Orangutan Alliance in Australia 3 key takeaways that Sreela has for listeners based on her own journey: The journey to building an economically resilient and environmentally friendly company is full of multiple challenges. Don't stop your journey and don't hesitate to ask for help when you require it. The challenges can sometimes defeat you. That is the time to count your blessings and celebrate every victory. Focus on the impact you plan to leave, beyond just yourself and your company. The topic will cover various generation of energy networks for buildings and outline the concept of Scandinavian ambient loop network, utilising waste heat as a resource for providing its energy need. The concept has a deep connection with wellbeing as it mitigates the need of burning fossil fuel and also absorbs low streams of heat which otherwise would be lost into the atmosphere creating urban height island effect. I will conclude the presentation with a short case study. Under Kartik's leadership, the Sweco building sustainability team has have delivered some of the most significant sustainable buildings in the UK and hence allocated three times BREEAM Company of the year (2014/2016/2017). Specialising in the sustainable design of the built environment, Kartik has over 16 years of experience in commercial, retail, industrial, military, educational and residential developments for new and refurbishment works. Kartik plays key roles in prestigious projects, developing energy strategies that evaluate solutions relative to cost, logistics, energy and carbon reductions, green rating certifications, savings and payback time for new and existing master plans and buildings. He actively pursues innovative thinking in projects to achieve the highest sustainable performance: some of this thinking results in early design guides for architects as well as research and testing in practice. His involvement in academia through lecturing at the University of Bath (UK) provides another platform for him to develop new ideas and obtain insights to define practical, sustainable solutions for buildings further.

Matthew Lynch and I recorded this interview back on March 24th, just as the Covid-19 “shelter-in-place” lockdown began in Hawaiʻi. What we planned to do in person suddenly had to be done via Zoom. The resulting audio is pretty sketch, but wow, Matthew and I covered some serious ground over a 90-minute conversation. Matthew is the Director of Sustainability Initiatives for all 10 campus of the University of Hawaiʻi system. Four years ago we met at a special Ted Dintersmith-hosted gathering at PBS Hawaiʻi. At the time I recall Matthew telling me, to my utter astonishment, that the UH systems had no sustainability degree. In Hawaiʻi? What? Matthew's job at the time partially included helping students cobble together classes that might result in the perception of sustainability expertise. Since then, wow!, Matthew has come along way and accomplished so much. To know the details of his journey you will need to listen to the episode! Over 90 minutes Matthew and I covered a range of topics, including ways Covid-19 will profoundly change living, and learning at every level. Matthew also serves as the President of the Board of Directors at Kahumana Organic Farm, and as Sustainability Measures Co-Chair on the Board of Directors for Hawaii Green Growth, which is a public-private partnership. The Office of Sustainability at the University of Hawaiʻi functions as a backbone organization, working across UH campuses to complement, support and enhance the incredible sustainability work that has been emerging over the past decade. Matthew's office provides coordination capacity for campuses to share information and resources with each other and accelerate action to strengthen the environmental, social, cultural and economic health of our islands' communities. To learn more about Matthew's work, click on the University's website. Post production for the What School Could Be in Hawaiʻi podcast is provided by Daniel Gilad at DG Sound Creations. Daniel is also the musical director for our episodes. His original music creations are sprinkled throughout the episode timeline.
