STIG ABELL chats to Paul Burke about his new crime novel DEATH IN A LONELY PLACE, rural idyll as vest of Vipers, identity, writing a series, love of genre fiction and how crime fiction is a tonic for the soul.DEATH IN A LONELY PLACE In a quiet village, darkness is closing in…A rural paradise…Detective Jake Jackson moved to the countryside for a quieter life. And he finally seems to have his wish – spending his days immersed in nature, and his evenings lazing by the fire.A terrifying secret…But the return of an old case shatters the calm, and pulls him into the shadowy world of a secretive group serving the extravagant whims of the elite. An enemy closes in…As the web around Jake tightens, he must determine who he can really trust in his small community. Or else he will learn just how far the elite will go to protect their secrets.STIG ABELL believes that discovering a crime fiction series to enjoy is one of the great pleasures in life. His first novel, Death Under A Little Sky, introduced Jake Jackson and his attempt to get away from his former life in the beautiful area around Little Sky. This book is the second in the series, and Stig is absolutely delighted that there are more on the way. Away from books, he co-presents the breakfast show on Times Radio, a station he helped to launch in 2020. Before that he was a regular presenter on Radio 4's Front Row and was the editor and publisher of the Times Literary Supplement. He lives in London with his wife, three children and two independent-minded cats called Boo and Ninja (his children named them, obviously).Recommendations Dorothy L Sayers, NGAIO MARSH, Carl Hiaasen, John D Mac Donald, Abigail Dean, Jane Casey, Noted: PD James, Ellis Peters, Elmore Leonard, James Lee Burke, James Ellroy, Colin Dexter. Colin Dexter was a splendid writer. His creation Inspector Morse is superb on the page and just as gripping on television. I used to meet Colin in the pub on Banbury Road in Oxford, The Dew Drop. He was great company and almost completely unaware of his success and star quality. I recorded this conversation in his house after the publication of The Remorseful Day. He was relaxed and very happy to look back at his life in education and crime writing.
Deel 4 in de Inspecteur Morse-serie van Colin Dexter. Harry Josephs wordt vermoord tijdens een kerkdienst. Radio Plays featuring Colin Dexter's Ispector Morse.
Christchurch writer Paul Cleave has released his latest thriller, The Pain Tourist just as filming is about to start on a TV show based on his first crime novel. Paul worked on the script for the Lionsgate-backed show, called Dark City -The Cleaner, that's set in his home town. Just as Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse did with Oxford, and Ian Rankin's Rebus did with Edinburgh, Paul's made Otautahi/Christchurch a literary crime hub! Unlike many crime novelists, Paul Cleave isn't wedded to the same detective in each novel. Though, as he tells Lynn Freeman, in The Pain Tourist we do see some familiar crime fighters. So what is a "pain tourist"? No word yet when Dark City - The Cleaner will screen, but Paul Cleave's novel The Pain Tourist is out now. It's an Upstart Press publication.
Arguably the most popular genre or style of fictional writing in English is the crime novel. Many of the most popular series of books or short stories feature professional or amateur detectives seeking to solve crime, often murders. What is it about this type of story that appeals? When did the genre first become popular? Who are some of the most famous authors and who are their leading protagonists, or lead characters, attempting to solve these fictional murders or major crimes? I interview Dave Lee, an English Language and Literature graduate who has a real passion for this style of writing, evidenced by his ownership of thousands of books, many yet to be read, from this category of literature. Dave talks about the work of New Zealander Naomi Marsh, American Raymond Chandler, the British writer Agatha Christie and many others including Marjorie Ellingham, Gladys Mitchell, Nicholas Blake (Cecil Day Lewis), the American Dashiell Hammett, Caroline Graham and more modern authors such as Ian Rankin, John Lawton (not me), Stephen Booth, Colin Dexter (writer of the Inspector Morse series), Peter Robinson, Emma Lathen (the pen name of two American businesswomen), Aline Templeton, Reginald Hill and most latterly Richard Osman (The Thursday Murder Club). We examine the plot devices at play in the novels and short stories; how good is expected to triumph over evil in the end, and examine why we are fascinated, as observers, with the difficulties of others. Critically, we examine the story telling qualities of the authors which enable them to be exciting, frightening (but in a vicarious way) and sometimes even humorous. Dave and I discuss whether the many TV and film adaptations can ever be as good as the books and point to one possible rare exception where this might possibly have been achieved. Colin Dexter, the genius behind celebrated fictional detective Inspector Morse was the very first event at the very first Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival (before it had even earnt that name). When writer Colin Dexter brought the idea of the gentleman detective into the modern day (well, 1970s) by pairing him with a younger working-class assistant, a crime fiction hero was born. Inspector Morse, who first made his appearance in 1975 novel Last Bus To Woodstock, and who was so beautifully portrayed on the small screen by the late John Thaw, became the star of 13 novels, 33 episodes of a TV serial of the same name and four radio plays, as well as a byword for quality detective stories. Morse made millions of viewers and readers happy and made Colin Dexter a household name – and familiar face as, Alfred Hitchcock-like, he made cameo appearances in nearly every Inspector Morse episode. Dexter joined us on stage to tell the behind-the-scenes tales of working on the TV series and books that made this one-time Classics teacher famous – it would be criminal to miss him.
