Have we lost the art of basic human decency—or just decided it's optional? In this episode of Talk of the Tavern, Travis, Ed, and Kevin dig into the slow disappearance of politeness, manners, and what used to be called common courtesy. From online arguments to everyday interactions, the crew explores whether society has genuinely changed—or if we're just noticing the cracks more now that everything's public. Is this a cultural shift, a generational divide, or just the result of too many people forgetting that other humans exist? So pull up a chair, mind your manners (or don't), and join us for a conversation about respect, rudeness, and whether civility is making a comeback… or staying buried. What's on Tap?
What's happened to manners and common courtesy in the U.K.? #UK #Manners #CommonCourtesy #BeKind #BritishValues #PublicTransport #CrossCountryTrains #JonGaunt #JonGauntTV #LIVE #BrokenBritain #UKPolitics They used to say, if you want to know what Britain thinks, ask the man on the Clapham Omnibus. Today? Try the 9:39 CrossCountry train from Oxford to Coventry. On Saturday morning, I found myself on a dangerously overcrowded train—just four carriages, packed to the point where people were struggling to even get on. As passengers pushed forward, I held people back so an elderly woman could board safely. She managed to get a seat. So did I. But as more elderly passengers stood in the aisle, I gave mine up. Here's what struck me. The train was full of young people—likely students. Not one of them moved. Not one offered a seat. Heads down. Eyes glued to phones and tablets. Everyone seemingly choosing to ignore what was happening right in front of them. No guard in sight. No intervention. Just a carriage full of people… and a quiet sense that everyone was on their own. I raised the issue with CrossCountry Trains on Twitter. To their credit, they responded quickly—offering the usual route: send a direct message, file a formal complaint. But that misses the point. This wasn't a one-off. This train is regularly overcrowded. People know it. Nothing changes. And in that moment, the train felt like more than just a journey. It felt like a snapshot of modern Britain. A mix of ages, backgrounds, and beliefs—yet united by frustration. A sense that systems aren't working. That courtesy is fading. That it's becoming every person for themselves. So what's happened to manners and common courtesy in the UK? Are we less kind—or just more distracted? Have social pressures and daily frustrations worn down our patience? Or are we simply changing what "respect" looks like in modern Britain? This video explores whether that overcrowded train carriage is an isolated experience… or a reflection of something much bigger.

Join Clay Edwards for Episode #1,102 of The Clay Edwards Show on WYAB, broadcast on November 17, 2025. In this lively Monday morning episode, Clay kicks things off with casual banter about watching a college football game at Cypress Point and Shucker's, highlighting a performance by the band Common Courtesy. The discussion dives into Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss rivalry, playoff scenarios, and tiebreakers, with insights on teams like Alabama and potential SEC championship implications. Clay shares nostalgic stories from road trips to Florida for an Ole Miss basketball game, a Kid Rock concert in Memphis, and a weekend in New Orleans coinciding with Dale Earnhardt's funeral. The conversation touches on legendary stadiums like the Rose Bowl and UCLA's move to SoFi Stadium. In a fiery segment, Clay critiques Michelle Obama's comments on race and beauty standards, questioning her focus on white people and cultural appropriation. He debates the Obamas' ongoing relevance in the Black community and contrasts Barack's legacy as advancing gay rights more than Black issues. Hour two features guest Andrew Gosser discussing a "MAGA civil war" sparked by Donald Trump's withdrawal of support from Marjorie Taylor Greene, labeling her antics and left-leaning appearances on The View and CNN. They analyze MTG's responses, including claims of threats and pizza doxing, and her shift toward apologizing for "toxic politics." The episode explores Tucker Carlson's exposé on Thomas Crooks, the Butler, PA shooter, alleging CIA grooming via MKUltra-style programs, hidden social media accounts, and a quick cremation to obscure evidence. They call for dismantling agencies like the FBI and CIA. In hour three, Joseph Stodghill, owner of Martin's Downtown and Livingston, joins to share Martin's history since 1953—from its origins as a deli to expansions and blue-plate lunches. They discuss navigating COVID shutdowns by reopening early, water crises, and future plans like rodeo after-parties, concerts at the Livingston venue (a church-turned-event space), and enhanced parade safety measures in Jackson. Tune in for unfiltered talk on sports, politics, and local business resilience. Don't miss Martin's fried or grilled pork chops today! A recent Environmental Protection Agency audit of the O'Briensbridge Water Treatment Facility found that residents were consuming inadequately disinfected water for 12 months before a 'boil water notice' was put in place due to deficiencies in the operation of the plant. In response to a request from Killaloe Councillor Tony O'Brien for Clare County Council to arrange a meeting between the water utility and local representatives, the local authority has said that all queries should be directed to Uisce Éireann. Former Mayor of Clare and Fianna Fáil Councillor O'Brien says as a statutory body, Uisce Éireann must provide assurances to the people of East Clare that no such incident will happen again.

In this episode I talk about the importance of having common courtesy and etiquette. We have to share this world, let's play fair and treat each other with respect. I also give advice on taking risks on your terms and not on life's terms. Do not allow laziness and lack of drive to keep you comfortable and stagnant, or you'll run the risk of being a failure in life. Questions Covered: 23:11 – It's easy for me to give common courtesy when I remember that it's one way to follow Jesus' command to love one another. 29:26 – It's more easy for common courtesy to flourish in a relaxed setting than in a more fast-paced or cutthroat one. 36:43 – I offered help to an elderly person today, and when people ask me how I am I reply “I'm blessed.” It often makes their day. 42:37 – Why did we have more courtesy in a print-dominated world than we do in a screen-dominated world, when we seem to be doing mostly the same thing with each? 47:28 – I work in sales and it's hard to be courteous with my coworkers because it's such a competitive environment. Is it right for me to behave that way when I have to support my family? …
