Mayo harpist Alannah Thornburgh talks about her debut album Shapeshifter, released February 12. She is inspired by the traditions of fairy folklore and mythology from rural Ireland. The project began when Alannah was commissioned to compose a piece for the Linenhall Arts Centre's New Music in Mayo series, curated by traditional musician Emer Mayock. With the support of the Arts Council's Next Generation Award, Alannah conducted interviews with nearly 50 historians, storytellers, and locals, collecting stories and experiences that inform her music. These conversations are woven throughout the album. We talk about all this, as well the Thornburgh family band and the influence of her saxophone-playing dad, the influence of the late Conor Walsh, and her various collaborations with the likes of Lemoncello and Varo. "There's a culture of creativity in our city”Dave Moutrey has been an integral part of Manchester's arts and cultural scene since the 1980's. He sits down with host Lisa Morton to discuss his journey to becoming a cornerstone of creativity in the city. Lisa hears about Dave's formative years, where the sparks of his passion for the arts were ignited during memorable trips to London. It was punk that inspired Dave to move to Manchester, a city that would become his canvas for creativity. In this episode, you'll hear how he played a pivotal role in establishing the cooperative ‘Arts About Manchester'; how he ran the iconic ‘Corner House', and led the £25 million move to Manchester's arts centre HOME. Dave tells Lisa about his current work in shaping Manchester's new cultural strategy and together they delve into the significance of creativity, community, and collaboration in making Manchester a cultural hotspot for years to come.------Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. From that point, the business, and its team members, have been involved in helping to support the creation of Modern Manchester – across regeneration, business, charity, leisure and hospitality, sport and culture. To celebrate the nearly 28 years that Roland Dransfield has spent creating these bonds, Lisa is gathering together some of her Greater Mancunian ‘family' and will be exploring how they have created their own purposeful relationships with the best place in the world.Connect with Lisa and Roland Dransfield: Via our websiteOn InstagramOn X FKA TwitterConnect with Dave Via InstagramVia LinkedIn

From Lyons' Corner House opera performances in the 1920s to 1980s productions staged in fish and chip shops in Scotland – Alexandra Wilson has been studying the history of opera going and presents us with a wider audience for the art form than current stereotypes might have you think. Callan Davies has looked at what went on in Elizabethan playhouses aside from plays by the likes of Shakespeare. New archaeological digs and legal documents featuring complaints are giving us evidence for a kind of leisure centre or arena which might have seen animal sports, fencing matches or spectaculars. Laurence Scott hosts the conversation. Alexandra Wilson is Professor of music and cultural history from Oxford Brookes University and the author of Opera in the Jazz Age: Cultural Politics in 1920s Britain Callan Davies is lecturer in 17th-century studies at the University of Southampton. His book is called What is a Playhouse? Now the two instrumentalists have taken the opportunity to see what a stripped-down duo sound can manifest, in the form of Hildaland. On their debut album, the pair focuses on remaking traditional music, with a focus on Bichan's Scottish musical roots. You can purchase the album and check out more info about the project here! Is mandolinist Ethan Setiawan 100 years old?! The Indiana-born Setiawan's expert playing will fool you into thinking he's four times his actual age. Thanks to a supportive family and mennonite community, Ethan came to the mandolin and folk music at an early age. His impressive proficiency and technical prowess landed him a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, he was exposed to all different types of music and developed that natural rhythm and groove that only comes with being in musical community. His new instrumental album Gambit was produced by his mentor, the legendary fiddler Darol Anger, best known for being in the original lineup for The David Grisman Quintet. Through Darol, Ethan was able to work on a tradition of his own through music built from a foundation of Bluegrass. He talks about that AND he explains what the bluegrass vocabulary is on the mandolin for dumb-dumbs like me, who do not play music and are not folk scholars. Setiawan is an in-demand side man and band member, and can be seen playing with his band Corner House, Darol Anger, and Tony Trischka among others. Their signature ‘Hot Chocolate Fudge' and ‘Death By Chocolate' are pick-me-ups on days that need some TLC or a delightful treat to accompany a celebration. Established at a time when the city was more trees and lakes than concrete, Corner House has been steadfastly serving Bangalore's folks since 1982. And this year, it will be 40 happy years since Narayan Rao's long standing labour of love has brought smiles to many. Corner House has become a part of families and homes; integral to Bangalore's spirit. For 40 years now, Rao has offered customers in the city high-quality ice cream desserts at reasonable prices that adhere to the in-house ‘scoop value' tenet; a guarantee that customers get their money's worth. Corner House's recipes are specially crafted and monitored and tested at each stage; from the production line at the factory to the sales counter at every outlet. You can indulge in 16 flavours of ice cream, 17 ice cream sundaes, eight fruit sundaes, 11 milkshakes and three non-ice cream desserts. Plus, their ‘bring your own bowl' initiative allows the environmentally inclined to reduce plastic. Narayan stopped by the show and here's how conversation went. In doing so, we touch on ideas of cultural renewal and not staying in positions of power for too long. We talk about curatorial ethics, mentorship and also how her psychotherapy training plays into how she works in the world of film. I got a lot out of speaking with Sandra. I cut it out of the final edit, but there was a moment where I had to check it was ok to run over our allotted time and confessed to having a really good time and I think that was a combination of Sandra's honesty, the perspective and consideration she gave to the questions and the interrogation too and it was just a very invigorating interview, so I hope you have as good a time with it as I did. You can Gaby on Instagram and on TikTok! We made a playlist to accompany this episode! It's comprised of songs that come to mind when we all think about this movie. Why Are Dads is a show in which hosts Sarah Marshall and Alex Steed attempt to understand what the hell it means to be the grown children of dads and other dad-like figures. And, as they do with all difficult subject matter, they do so by looking through a pop culture lens. You can find us on Twitter, Instagram and Patreon. In the third episode of EU Watchdog Radio Nicholas Hildyard, UK based researcher and activist of the NGO, The Corner House, gives some fascinating insights in the world of logistics. A world that we all benefit from, but know very little about. Hildyard, who just published a new report with Counter Balance, states that we are all being 'logisticized' without even realizing it. The relatively new economic sector called 'logistics management' is now one of the biggest employers globally, sporting a value over 4 trillion euro. But what about the millions of hidden 'ghostworkers'? They who work behind the scenes of the glossy websites, algorithms and logistical hubs that are so often forgotten? In his report ‘Corridors as factories: supply chains, logistics and labour' Hildyard describes the scale and speed of this globalisation process, as well as the plans to multiply massive logistical hubs and/or corridors on all continents except Antarctica. This process will have huge impacts on labour rights, human rights, the environment and all our societies. Hildyard describes some of the plans as extreme (politics) and labels the trend with the paradoxical and provocative term ‘neoliberal stalinism'. A major secondary question is whether the ongoing corona-crisis will slow down and what its impact will be on this trend. Both CEO and Counter Balance raise awareness on the importance of good governance in the European Union. By researching issues like the lobbying of large and powerful industries, corporate capture of decision making, corruption, fraud, human rights violations in areas like agro-business, biotech & chemical companies, the financial sector & public investment banks, trade, energy & climate, scientific research and much more…Find us on iTunes, Spotify & Buzzsprout. A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Nick Waplington is a photographer and a painter, who divides his time between New York, where he lives with his English professor wife and their young son, and London where his older son lives and where has a studio and live/work space. He has produced many photobooks over a thirty year career, collaborating with established publishers such as Aperture, Cornerhouse, Mack, Phaidon and Trolley, producing low-fi, zine style publications in small numbers and more recently self-publishing through Jesus Blue, the imprint he founded this year with his friend, the designer Jonny Lu.His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at Tate Britain and The Photographers' Gallery in London, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and numerous other institutions, In 1993 he was awarded an Infinity Award for Young Photographer by the International Center of Photography and his work is held in the permanent collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the National Gallery of Australia, among others.Nick travelled extensively during his childhood as his step-father (who he thought at the time was his biological father) worked as a scientist in the nuclear industry. He studied art at West Sussex College of Art & Design in Worthing, Trent Polytechic in Nottingham and the Royal College of Art in London. From 1984, Nick would regularly visit his grandfather on the Broxtowe Estate in Aspley, Nottingham, where he began to photograph the surroundings and some of the families who lived there. He continued with this work on and off for the next 15 years and from it came two books, Living Room and Weddings, Parties, Anything, as well as numerous exhibitions.Other bodies of his work include Safety in Numbers (1997), a bleak study of the ecstasy drug culture in the mid-1990s; The Indecisive Memento, a global road trip where the journey itself was the artwork (1999); Truth or Consequences (2001), a pictorial game based on the history of photography using the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico as a backdrop, inspired by the rules of the 1950s television show; and You Love Life (2005), in which he uses pictures taken over a 20-year period to construct an autobiographical narrative.Nick worked on a major book project with the fashion designer Alexander McQueen during 2008/2009, called Working Process (2013), the title referring to both McQueen's working process as a fashion designer and Waplington's working process as an artist making photo books. In March 2015 this project became the first one-person exhibition by a British photographer in the main exhibition space at Tate Britain in London.Nick participated in the photography collective This Place, founded by Frédéric Brenner, contributing the book Settlement (2014), a study of Jewish settlers living in the West Bank, portrait and landscape photographs taken with a large format camera. While continuing to make photographic works Waplington has since 2010 devoted much of his time to his practice as a painter. On episode 118, Nick discusses, among other things:His life NY-LON life: dividing his time between the U.S. and LondonPainting and photographyRecent work based around Plato’s allegory of the caveHis latest book Hackney Riviera and why he self-published itBeing ‘on it’ and the “all day, every day” practiceHow it all began in the school darkroomGrammar school, post-punk and not having a plan BHis Living Room projectDiscovering the hidden truth about his fatherMoving to Jerusalam to photograph Jewish settlers in the Occupied TerritoriesForthcoming autobiographical project, Anaglypta, about him, childhood, and his relationship to violence Referenced:David CampanySir Nick SerrotaJonny LuRoe EthridgeWolfgand TillmansPennie SmithMick Jones and The ClashFrederic BrennerEyal WeizmanJosef KoudelkaJo Spence Website | Instagram | Twitter “The whole world is changing very fast because of new technologies and the internet or whatever.
