Actor Kelsey Grammer is known for his many acting roles, most notably as radio psychiatrist Frasier Crane in the long running TV sitcom “Frasier.” But behind the comic mask lies a lifelong story of pain and grief. Fifty years ago, his beloved sister Karen was abducted, raped and murdered. In a new memoir, “Karen: A Brother Remembers,” he writes of how the tragedy shaped his own life. On this episode of Free Expression, Grammer speaks with Gerry Baker about his sister as a source of joy in his life, his spiritual reunion with her and his evolving Christian faith. A rare conservative in Hollywood, Grammer also discussed the current political climate in America and how the pursuit of individual freedom remains his guiding philosophy.   Learn more about your ad choices. Actor Kelsey Grammer joins Margaret Hoover to discuss his new book, his decadeslong journey of healing after tragedy, and his politics. When most people think of Grammer, they think of his charming character Dr. Frasier Crane on “Cheers” and “Frasier,” but there is a darker side to his story. In “Karen: A Brother Remembers,” Grammer reflects on the vicious murder of his sister Karen, who was raped and stabbed 42 times in 1975 when she was 19.“She was my North Star,” Grammer tells Hoover in an emotional interview. He also recalls how acting helped him overcome his grief and his self-destructive behavior in the wake of his sister's murder. “I had this almost miraculous outlet that made me a whole person.”Grammer was inspired to write the book after working with a medium who helped him connect with Karen and discover her wish for him to write her story. Grammer takes the reader on a long,  stream-of-consciousness style journey through his memories and emotions. After spending three years writing the book, Grammer says he is more grateful now than ever before, and he hopes that this book will help other people heal, too. Grammer is well known as a rare conservative in Hollywood and has even been seen at Mar-a-Lago. He defends President Trump as representing the “common man,” and he rejects claims that the country is moving towards oligarchy. “Oligarchy is malarkey,” he says.Support for “Firing Line for Margaret Hoover” is provided by Robert Granieri, Vanessa and Henry Cornell, The Fairweather Foundation, Peter and Mark Kalikow, Cliff and Laurel Asness, The Meadowlark Foundation, The Beth and Ravenel Curry Foundation, Charles R. Shortly before Kelsey Grammer rose to fame playing Dr. Frasier Crane on Cheers and then Frasier, he experienced a horrible personal tragedy: His 18-year-old older sister Karen was brutally murdered in 1975. “The grief was so enormous. I don't blame anybody for grieving to that extent, I get it.” And now he's memorializing Karen's memory—and searching for answers—in Karen: A Brother Remembers (May 6). He says the book “came from what is a shared sadness, a depth of sadness that we have to go through these things,” and hopes that others will feel a “lifeline” with this book. “There is a personal, human cost struggle that is forever. From the moment that happens, it's forever. So I think that one of the goals of the book would be to actually extend the hand of love to everybody that's felt the same way, who will spend the rest of their lives remarking on it.” While the “grief is always there,” Grammer says writing this book “let the grief roll back just enough to be able to remember her story is my story, and that our love that we had is forever, and that's been great.” See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Jamie Ruers, Mariano Ben Plotkin, and Mariano Ruperthuz Honorato, from the Freud Museum in London, reinterpret psychoanalysis through 20th century Latin American pop culture, relocating the practice in radio shows, surrealist photographs, women's magazines, and comic books from the 1960s, like Freud: El Mago de los Sueños (The Wizard of Dreams). Psychoanalysis is often considered a practice of the Global North, starting in Sigmund Freud's home in Vienna before World War II. But South America has been at the forefront of the practice since the end of the 20th century, where it is is even more popular than Europe. So who are the figures who led - and simultaneously developed - such thinking? And how did Buenos Aires come to have the highest proportion of psychoanalysts in the world? Curator and researchers Jamie Ruers, Mariano Ben Plotkin, and Mariano Ruperthuz Honorato share how psychoanalysis permeated all layers of society, especially pop culture. They draw on existing traditions and new trends like magical realism, associated with Jorge Luis Borges. We discuss the ‘cultural complex' of dreams and sex, and the difference between Freudism and psychoanalysis, highlighting histories of exchange and reinterpretation, agency and appropriation for economic gain, rather than simplying adoption or propagation, of Freud's thinking. Beyond Spanish, Portuguese, both languages of colonial import, we consider the many ways Freud's works were translated, and some of those he failed to credit, whose contributions have been written out of history, like Peruvian psychiatrist Honorio Delgado, Julio Pires Porto-Carrero, founder of the Society of Brazilian Psychoanalysis (1928), and disciple of Juliano Moreira, the son of a Black slave who picked up Freud's ideas and circulated them throughout Brazil. We hear Gastão Pereira da Silva's radio programmes, authored ‘in the vein of Dr. Frasier Crane', and read women's magazines like Idilio, illustrated by exiles like the German-Argentinian photographer Grete Stern, whose surrealist images highlight the intellectual interests and engagements of women, and shared experiences of migrants across continents. Plus, contemporary artworks and interventions in Freud's former home in London challenge the exotification of South America, connecting the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of people both past and present. Freud and Latin America runs at the Freud Museum in London until 14 July 2024. Did I Do That?: Making (Graphic) Design and Mistakes

As both Season 3 and 2023 draw to a close, the time to seek forgiveness is at hand! Earlier this year, Did I Do That? set up a confessional booth—with Sean playing the role as part priest, part Frasier Crane—to collect true stories of design disasters, missteps, failures, and more from anonymous guests who sought to clear their guilty consciences. How can you find peace when faced with cross crossworders, ghost(ed) cookbooks, and duck pornography? There's only one way to find out!(To be clear: the way is listening; you must listen to find out.)WANT A DESIGN CONFESSIONAL AT YOUR EVENT?If you have a live event and want me to set up another design confessional for it, either in Portland or beyond, let's talk! I'd love to do more events like this in the future.SPECIAL THANKSThe clips used in this episode were collected as part of “Future Fonts and Friends,” a party held for TypeCon 2023 at Outlet in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, August 17, 2023. All guests were indeed anonymous, and so if you hear any familiar voices, I guess just ignore that? Come to think of it, what do real priests do about that problem?!Huge thanks to past guest Lizy Gershenzhon and Travis Kochel of Future Fonts for inviting me to be a part of the event, to the organizers of TypeCon for putting up with me, and to my 2023 MVP Orion Cortez for building the confessional booths based solely on two terrible sketches I made.Additional thanks to past guest Kate Bingaman-Burt of Outlet for her eternal support of / patience with me just in general, but especially the white-hot ball of stress that is me when faced with a live event. Thanks, too, to the kind folks at Jolby—who didn't even have anything to do with the party and had no reason to help me!—for letting me steal power from them for a couple of hours just because I happened to set up next to their studio.YOU'VE MADE IT THIS FAR…I want to all of you listeners out there for keeping this show going and growing. This marks the end of both our third season and second year, and I don't think I ever would have imagined there would be as many folks out there following it as there are around the world. If you've enjoyed the first two years of this show, please tell a friend! I want to keep this project growing, and the community around it growing as well.If you have some nice things to say about what this project means to you, please send me an email! If you have mean things to say about me, please relay them to your dentist while they have their hands in your mouth—they'll understand and relay them directly back to me, I'm sure.I don't ordinarily plug the tip jar, but if you have some change between your couch cushions you want to throw my way, I would really appreciate it. Attend but Don't Participate Unless You're on the Team - I'm listening. That phrase is on my mind because the TV character Frasier Crane has returned to television. Portrayed by Kelsey Grammer in the shows Frasier and Cheers, Frasier Crane dispensed psychiatric advice on his popular radio show.As each new caller joined the show, Frasier would voice his catchphrase, “I'm listening.”If you attend a team's daily scrum meetings but are not a member of that team, consider following Frasier's lead: listen.Your team probably welcomes your attendance. But unless you are actively working on sprint backlog items, you should not participate. As an attendee, listen silently unless the team solicits your opinion or questions.Daily scrums exist so that team members can synchronize their efforts. These meetings enable team members to be sure the most important tasks are being worked on, to know that two people are not working on the same thing, and to emphasize their commitment to achieving the sprint goal. When outsiders go beyond just attending and they participate, a number of problems may arise:  Team members may hold information back, not wanting to be questioned by outsiders Team members feel less ownership of issues and may wait for outsiders to solve problems for them Morale suffers because team members don't feel trusted If you attend daily scrums but are not on the team, you may want to stop. Instead, ask the team to notify you about anything they need your help with.If you can't go as far as no longer attending, perhaps start each meeting as Frasier Crane would, by saying (or at least thinking), “I'm listening.”Listening and letting teams run their own daily scrums without (even well-intended!) outside participation will help them succeed with agile.
