Pinar Abay has been a member of the Management Board at ING Group since January 2020 and currently serves as Head of Retail Banking. She is also a member of the Supervisory Board of ING-DiBa in Germany and serves on the board of the European Payments Initiative (EPI). In 2016, she was appointed Chair of ING Belgium and continues to serve as a board member. Pinar began her career in 1998 at McKinsey & Company, working in Istanbul, San Francisco, and New York. In 2011, she joined ING as CEO and board member of ING Turkey, becoming the youngest bank CEO in Turkey at the age of 34. She studied economics at Bilkent University in Turkey and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in the United States. Born in Ankara in 1977, she holds Turkish nationality. Deze week verwelkomt de Leaders in Finance Podcast Eelco Heinen. In juli 2024 werd Eelco Heinen benoemd tot minister van Financiën in het kabinet-Schoof namens de VVD.  Eelco begon zijn carrière bij het ministerie van Financiën, waar hij van 2008 tot 2011 werkte. Daarna maakte hij de overstap naar de VVD-Tweede Kamerfractie, waar hij van 2011 tot 2021 als beleidsadviseur Financiën en later als politiek secretaris actief was. In 2021 werd hij lid van de Tweede Kamer, waar hij de rol van woordvoerder Financiën op zich nam.  Wat betreft zijn studieachtergrond: na het afronden van zijn opleiding hogere informatica aan de Hogeschool van Amsterdam, behaalde hij maar liefst twee masterdiploma's, namelijk in de macro-economie en in de internationale betrekkingen, beide aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Naast zijn werk als minister heeft Eelco zich ook ingezet als landelijk campagneleider en was hij lid van diverse VVD-campagneteams en verkiezingsprogrammacommissies. Daarnaast was hij mede-onderhandelaar namens de partij bij de totstandkoming van het huidige kabinet. Paul Buitink spreekt met Simon Lelieveldt van Stichting Human Rights in Finance over de doorgeslagen financiële controlestaat, transaction monitoring, contant geld en het belang van privacy.Wat doen Nederlandse banken met uw gegevens? Volgens Simon overtreden ze de wet en schenden ze de privacy van burgers, en daar zijn ze vervolgens allesbehalve open over. Hij vergelijkt hun gedrag met dat van een kleuter die stiekem uit de koekjestrommel heeft gesnoept. Simon zegt dat dit de banken heel veel geld kan gaan kosten.Ook De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) weigert volgens hem om openheid van zaken te geven over hun rol in deze situatie, ondanks zijn verzoek op basis van de Wet open overheid (Woo). Is DNB er voor de banken of de burger? Volgens Simon worden de banken gedekt door het ministerie van Financiën en DNB om iets te mogen wat volgens de wet verboden is.In Nederland moeten ongebruikelijke transacties gemeld worden bij de Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), terwijl Europees recht uitsluitend melding van verdachte transacties voorschrijft. Dat leidt tot een vorm van overkill, waarbij elke duidelijke maatstaf ontbreekt. Burgers kunnen hierdoor in de problemen komen: rekeningen worden onterecht geblokkeerd en de privacy komt in het geding. Is deze massale registratie van transacties wel nodig?Wat is de toekomst van contant geld? Het belang van cash wordt volgens Simon steeds duidelijker, maar de overheid werkt lang niet altijd mee. En welke rol kan de digitale euro (CBDC) gaan spelen?Tot slot bespreken ze het belang van privacy en het voorkomen van een controlestaat. De cryptomarkt is deze week opvallend stabiel. De koers van Bitcoin schommelt rond de 95.000 dollar, vrijwel gelijk aan vorige week. De echte beweging zit deze week bij de memecoins. Tokens als FLOKI en BONK laten opnieuw stijgingen zien, wat duidt op een verhoogde risicobereidheid onder beleggers. Toch blijven memecoins als categorie risicovol, met talloze varianten die snel in waarde kelderen. Ondertussen is er nieuws uit de Nederlandse bancaire sector. Bunq wordt de eerste bank in Nederland die cryptovaluta aanbiedt aan haar klanten. Via een samenwerking met het Amerikaanse Kraken kunnen gebruikers toegang krijgen tot ruim 300 cryptomunten. De stap is opvallend, zeker gezien het terughoudende beleid van traditionele grootbanken in Nederland. In Europa en daarbuiten zetten banken steeds vaker in op digitale assets, wat de druk op Nederlandse instellingen vergroot om in beweging te komen. Tegelijkertijd gaan er geruchten dat ING werkt aan een eigen stablecoin. Onder de Europese cryptowet MICAR is het regelgevend kader voor stablecoins duidelijker geworden. Ze vallen voortaan onder de noemer elektronisch geld, wat banken als ING meer ruimte geeft om te experimenteren. Andere Europese banken, zoals Société Générale, gingen hen al voor. Als het gerucht klopt, zou het een volgende stap zijn richting een efficiënter internationaal betalingsverkeer met minder frictie. Duurzaamheid is opnieuw een thema in de wereld van bitcoinmining. Volgens een nieuwe studie van de Universiteit van Cambridge is inmiddels 52,5% van het wereldwijde miningnetwerk afhankelijk van duurzame energie. Twee jaar geleden lag dat percentage nog op 37,6%. De onderzoekers verzamelden data bij 49 miningbedrijven, goed voor ongeveer de helft van het totale netwerk. Hoewel fossiele energiebronnen op sommige plekken nog domineren, is duidelijk dat miners snel verduurzamen vanwege de lagere energiekosten van duurzame bronnen. De geografische spreiding van mining laat ook nieuwe trends zien. Noord-Amerika, en met name beursgenoteerde bedrijven in Texas, blijft een zwaartepunt. Maar er zijn ook minder zichtbare ontwikkelingen, zoals in Rusland, waar bitcoin vermoedelijk een rol speelt in internationale betalingen. Ook landen als Bhutan, Zuid-Amerika en China blijven actief in mining, soms zelfs op overheidsniveau. En het bekende verhaal van James Howells, de Brit die zijn harde schijf met 750 miljoen dollar aan bitcoin op een vuilnisbelt verloor, krijgt een nieuw hoofdstuk. En welke rol spelen goud en Bitcoin daarbij? Te gast is Lex Hoogduin, Emiritus Hoogleraar, voormalig directeur bij DNB en voorzitter van het Mises Instituut Nederland. De rente op Amerikaanse staatsleningen blijft hardnekkig hoog en aandelenbeurzen staan onder druk. Productie die teruggehaald moest worden naar de VS stagneert en eerdere plannen lijken af te brokkelen. In Nederland noemde voormalig DNB-president Nout Wellink Trump een ‘politieke en economische terrorist’ in de Holland Gold-podcast, een uitspraak die hij vervolgens herhaalde bij Buitenhof. Tegelijk rijst de vraag hoe Europa moet reageren: door handelstarieven te verhogen, nauwer samen te werken met China of via nieuwe initiatieven zoals ReArm Europe en eurobonds. De aanval van Trump op Fed-voorzitter Jerome Powell zette de onafhankelijkheid van centrale banken ter discussie. Met nog een jaar te gaan in zijn termijn blijft de druk op Powell groot. Ondertussen groeit de Amerikaanse staatsschuld verder en klinken er steeds meer vragen over de houdbaarheid van de dollar als wereldreservemunt. Alternatieven voor het mondiale geldsysteem worden steeds vaker genoemd. Ook het rentebeleid van de ECB blijft onzeker. Hoewel recent nog een renteverlaging werd doorgevoerd, wordt een renteverhoging later dit jaar steeds waarschijnlijker. Goud stijgt ondertussen in rap tempo. Tegelijk ontstaan twijfels over de betrouwbaarheid van goudreserves, onder meer door opmerkingen van Elon Musk over Fort Knox en zorgen over Europese goudvoorraden die in New York liggen opgeslagen. Bitcoin beweegt intussen mee met de onrust op financiële markten en lijkt steeds meer een rol te vervullen als alternatief voor traditionele assets. De opbouw van een strategische bitcoinreserve door de Verenigde Staten roept de vraag op of landen die achterblijven een risico lopen. Ook centrale banken bewegen. In Tsjechië sprak de directeur zich positief uit over Bitcoin als onderdeel van de nationale reserves. Ondertussen ontstaan er nieuwe initiatieven waarin bedrijven, vaak met geleend geld, Bitcoin op de balans zetten. Stablecoinuitgever Tether, Softbank, Bitfinex en zakenbank Cantor Fitzgerald lanceerden onlangs 21 Capital, een vehikel dat uitsluitend Bitcoin koopt. Vergelijkingen met vroegere goudreserves worden steeds vaker gemaakt. De blik op het komende jaar blijft onzeker. Financiële en geopolitieke spanningen zetten de toon, en de rol van alternatieve assets als goud en Bitcoin lijkt alleen maar groter te worden.
