Barker shared an unbelievable story about how his career skyrocketed after what started as a failed attempt to connect with Stephen King. Barker had reached out to King with the hope of receiving permission to use a character from Needful Things in his debut novel, Forsaken. Though King didn't initially respond, fate intervened: King's assistant eventually passed the manuscript along, and to Barker's astonishment, King gave his blessing. The rest is history. This incredible moment not only legitimized Barker's work but also opened doors to a world of opportunity.“It's one of those surreal moments that still feels like a dream,” Barker told us, laughing as he recalled the experience. “One minute, I was trying to track down King; the next, my book sales exploded overnight.”The James Patterson EffectAs if that wasn't enough, Barker also talked about his game-changing collaboration with James Patterson, one of the most successful authors of all time. Patterson's approach to storytelling and his disciplined process left a profound impact on Barker.“James has this incredible ability to simplify storytelling without losing depth,” Barker shared. “Working with him forced me to become a more efficient writer. I used to labor over every sentence, but now I've learned to trust my instincts.”This partnership not only honed Barker's craft but also expanded his reach to an even larger global audience. The camaraderie between these two literary giants is inspiring, and the lessons Barker gleaned are gold for any aspiring writer.Dracul: The Legacy of Bram Stoker Lives OnOne of the most jaw-dropping moments of the interview was when Barker recounted how the Bram Stoker family approached him to co-write a prequel to Dracula. Armed with Bram Stoker's original notes and journals—many of which had never been made public—Barker embarked on the daunting task of bringing Dracul to life. The novel was an instant hit, earning praise from critics and fans alike, while being optioned for film by Paramount.“I'll never forget that phone call,” Barker said, his eyes lighting up. “To have the Stoker family trust me with something so personal and iconic—it was both humbling and terrifying. But that's the kind of challenge you dream of as a writer.”Why You Should Watch NowFrom perseverance to partnerships, J.D. Barker's story is a masterclass in grit, creativity, and seizing opportunities. And the best part? This is just the tip of the iceberg. Darkness Radio presents: Bram Stoker: Father Of Dracula with Researcher/Author/Filmmaker, Dacre Stoker! Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of the most successful novels in history. The tale of the evil Count has thrilled and fascinated people since its publication in 1897. The novel has never been out of print and has been translated into thirty languages and sold in over a hundred and twenty countries worldwide. Count Dracula is now regarded as one of the most famous fictional characters in history. The image of the undead vampire as a symbol of evil is now firmly embedded in our collective consciousness, thanks to Stoker. Paradoxically, Dracula has also become a symbol of forbidden lust thanks to the later portrayals of the character by Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Frank Langella. But what of Bram Stoker, the man behind the creation? Sadly, he left no autobiography and precious little first-hand source material for us to better understand his life and inspirations for his writing of Dracula. However, by examining his private journals, notes, and the memories of those who knew him we can piece together an account of his life and learn much about the man who became the father of Dracula. Dacre Stoker Joins Darkness Radio today to describe how he, filmmaker Jason Figgis. and author and screenwriter, John West are putting together that documentary of Bram Stoker's life titled, "Father Of Dracula". Stoker also tells us how we can help get it to the finish line through a 60 day crowdsourcing campaign through Indiegogo! Previously on Dracul: As we once again viewed the world in Catherine's perspective, we come to see that she was entirely too close to unearthing the truth about her being related to Philippe Deiana. Shortly after, she was visited by a changed Funani, who could only warn her of Sartrum before uncontrollably turning into his lycanthrope state, initially unable to recognize Catherine before regaining some control and leaving in a hurry. Seeking Dracul's help, Catherine then discovers his once hidden resting room, which strangely prevented Zazu's magical self from entering, only to discover an apparition that resembled Veronica before finally resting her eyes on a paralyzed Dracul. Hello and Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you are staying safe, healthy, and happy during this trying times. It seems as though the world still has yet to learn of love and its incredible power. Perhaps someday sooner rather than later these terrible atrocities will end and we will walk together as a single race: the human race. Please sign any petitions you can to cease any war / conflict happening in the world whether it directly effects you or not. If times get too difficult and you need an escape, Dracul will always be here! I will see you all in the next episode, Draculants! Thank you for a wonderful 2023- here's to an even better 2024!
Previously on Dracul: Every evening, Funani had met up with Detective Alessio, who would retrieve files and documents for Funani, until he finally discovered the conn ection between Catherine and Dracul. Furthermore, he made another new friend with the village's so-called “crazy lady” only for her to be killed by Dracul, as well. While grieving, Sartrum offers Funani an opportunity to take down Dracul for the well-being of Catherine and “others.” Denying this offer, Funani experiences alarming changes within him before uncontrollably changing into his beast form, running off to not be seen by anyone in town. Good morning / afternoon / evening / day / night / pancakes, everyone! I hope you're all doing well and staying safe. Thank you for listening to the Dracul Podcast, it really means a lot to me! I'm currently finishing up my first semester as a graduate student [insert applause] so yay!! I hope to see you all in the next episode! :) If not, that's okay! [insert crying here] Stay safe, Draculants!

He shares stories from the life of Bram Stoker and explains how illness, hysteria, and international history all played a role in the origins and lore of the famous novel. Previously on Dracul: As we entered Funani's life since his disappearance from Catherine, we gained insight on how people interact with him and vice versa. After frustratingly uncovering very little about Catherine's past and ancestry, he continues on with his day: purchasing a Vampire index book and receiving a letter from his devoted. When evening came, he befriended a man who just so happened to be a detective working on a strangely familiar case, vowing to help Funani with his case in return for the insight he received. If you ever feel overwhelmed or are on a long car ride and need something to listen to, Dracul is here for you! Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dracul.podcast/

Previously on Dracul: Catherine spent the day out with Laidee Alwoof and Woomane Lousty, gaining a total makeover to help show her change of character! The three were ecstatic to reacquaint as they readied themselves for the upcoming ball that evening. Dracul spent the entire day sleeping, of course, having flashbacks of his past life when he was Ulric. We now know that he and Philippe were far more than friends, but lovers, as he was the first to break Ulric's heart until Veronica showed up. She had quite a viscous temper and was quick to become jealous. The episode ends with Catherine showing up to the ball shortly after Dracul, as he whispers her name across the ballroom, which she instantly hears. Hello there, Draculants! Did you think I abandoned you? Haha silly you, you little silly billy of COURSE I WOULD NOT DO SUCH A THING! I simply just had a lot on my plate as always, but you are always on my mind. ALWAYS. Next week is my graduation, then off to graduate school! To be honest, I'm in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to composing new music and writing, but I'm sure that'll be no more once I'm done with school! Enjoy this episode and see you in the next one within the World of Dracul!
WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS THEMES OF SUICIDE, WHICH SOME LISTENERS MAY FIND DISTRESSING. Previously on Dracul: Catherine went to go check in on Dracul to see how he was doing after nearly DYING earlier on in the day. Once she did, she was shocked to see what state his room was in as it was the complete opposite of what she had expected from him. They sat down and chatted for a short while as he began lavishing her with compliments. After telling her that he was glamoured by her, which she didn't seem to take seriously, his eyes began to change and reflect her eye color. Happy New Year to all you, fellow Draculants! I hope you all had wonderful holidays and that you are safe and sound at home. I wanted to release a *bit* of a longer episode to celebrate the new year and to thank you all for listening to Dracul, whether you are just joining or have been following since the first episode released in 2019. PopaHALLics #91 "Rock n Troll"A solo Steve discusses the Norwegian monster movie "Troll" and the debate about what its popularity means for foreign-language films on Netflix. If you've got reading time during the holidays, he also talks about some books worth curling up with.Streaming:"Troll," Netflix. Humans screwing around with nature accidentally awaken an ancient evil deep within the mountain. Cliched and derivative, but if you go into it expecting a B monster movie, you won't be disappointed.Books:"Billy Summers," by Stephen King. A hitman takes one final job—which naturally goes wrong. King has fun breathing life into a tired trope and talking about the writing life."The Girl in Red," by Christina Henry. In this clever riff on Red Riding Hood, a teenage girl heads for her grandmother's house when the apocalypse hits."Round Ireland with a Fridge," by Tony Hawks. The bet that a British comedian couldn't hitchhike around Ireland with a fridge results in a light, funny travelogue mainly about the Irish people."Dracul," by Dacre Stoker and J.D. Barker. A prequel to "Dracula" co-written by Bram Stoker's great-grandnephew suggests Bram was writing about vampires from first-knowledge."Honey Don't," by Tim Sandlin. When a president accidentally dies after having sex with a young woman, she, her wanna-be mobster boyfriend, an over-the-hill journalist and a gay NFL player try to get rid of the evidence. Previously on Dracul: Catherine saved Dracul from boiling to death underneath the sun. Thinking he was dead, Dracul felt relieved, but upon realizing he was alive, and in Catherine's company, he grew melancholic. Knowing that Catherine wished she hadn't seen his ultimate state, he tried to enchant her in hopes that she would forget, but she wouldn't allow it. Dracul admitted to her that he would protect her at all costs, calming her down which led to Catherine becoming very sleepy as she rested against Dracul before throwing him out of her room in an embarrassed state of mind. After clearing her head, Catherine decided to go check up on Dracul. Hello there, my dear Draculants! We are nearing a whole new year already and yet it seems like I just uploaded my first episode a few days ago. I apologize for the lack of episodes lately: not only was I under a dry spell of writer's block, but I was also preoccupied with school. However, I hope that as I am nearing the end of my undergrad, I will have more time to entertain you all, my dear listeners, with more episodes! The minute my schedule was cleared up, I got straight into writing, recording, editing, and revising this episode and future episodes! Thank you all for being with me for this long, for being with Catherine as she battles with Dracul and Sartrum, and she befriends Funani and Zazu. As a gift for you all, the following episode will be much longer AND very juicy!! I'm talking like GASP type of juicy, so keep you're eyes peeled like a lemon as you delve further into the World of Dracul! I shall see you in the next episode, stay safe and healthy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/priscilla-ibarra/support
Frankie & Tish had the opportunity to interview Dacre Stoker, the Great Grand Nephew of The Bram Stoker, during his 125 Years of Dracula tour. He has been traveling with The Menagerie and giving spooktacular lectures regarding the history of Bram as well as discussing his books; Dracul and Dracula the Un-Dead, the prequel and sequel to Bram Stokers Dracula. The ghouls couldn't wait to pick his brain and find answers to all the questions they never knew to ask! Oddly enough, this episode, and the next, which both include interviews with Dacre, were one of the very few times the duo experienced major technical difficulties. The episodes had to be salvaged as well as possible and then "Frankensteined" together to make them somewhat complete. So please forgive the ladies for taking so long to bring it to you. They hope you enjoy hearing from Dacre Stoker as much as they did!Support the show

It's our annual Halloween special! This year we are looking at three versions of the Nosferatu story in preparation of Robert Eggers version coming next year. When the Bram Stoker estate wouldn't grant F.W. Murnau the rights to film Dracula in 1922, he made his own version and changed the names making Nosferatu, Eine Symphonie Des Grauens (A Symphony of Horror) starring Max Schreck. In 1979 Werner Herzog remade the film with Nosferatu the Vampyre starring Klaus Kinski. Then in 2000 E. Elias Merhige made a film about the original film, Shadow of the Vampire with Willem Dafoe playing Max Schreck. This isn't a traditional Make/Remake episode as we just have a free flowing discussion of the three films. Check out the previous Halloween special episode 49: History of the Dracul, which looks at three different versions of the official Dracula character. Get your bell bottoms, your peace sign, your tie dye and your … crucifix! This week's guest is Gwendolyn Kiste and her new novel, Reluctant Immortals, transports us to San Francisco in 1968, the summer after the Summer of Love, when the sun is setting on the hippie movement. Into this chaos comes a quarter of iconic Gothic characters, ready to fight it out all over again.Like the book, the surface of this conversation belies its inner darkness. Yes we talk hippies. Yes we talk Haunted Hollywood. Yes we talk cheesy movies. But we also get into the horrific implications of vampires for sexual consent, the true hideous power of the patriarchy, and how women are weaponised against women. There is substantial conversation about domestic and sexual abuse in the second half of the conversation. Just a warning in case this is a problem for you. It's a tough conversation, but a good one.Enjoy!Reluctant Immortals is released in North America on August 23rd by and in the UK on November 22nd by Titan.Other books discussed in this episode include:Something Borrowed, Something Blood-soaked (2018), by Christa CarmenTo Be Devoured (2019), by Sarah TantlingerThe Rust Maidens (2018), by Gwendolyn Kiste“The Eight People Who Murdered Me (Excerpt from Lucy Westenra's Diary)”, by Gwendolyn Kiste, Nightmare Magazine, issue 86, (2019)“The Woman Out of the Attic, by Gwendolyn Kiste, in Haunted House Short Stories (2019)Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock 'N Roll Generation Saved Hollywood (1998), by Peter BiskindSupport Talking Scared on PatreonCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

Previously on Dracul: Catherine had received another letter from Wooman Lousty and Laidee Alwoof, telling her where to meet them tomorrow in preparation for the ball. Though delighted, Catherine became heavy-hearted when reminiscing on times when she would go with Dracul. Later on in the day, a disheveled Sartrum had made his way over the Mansion Castle place of residence and tried to force himself on Catherine, casting his magic over Catherine's bedroom door so that Zazu could not come to her aid. Dracul came from underground and scared away Sartrum with a truly unholy sight, collapsing on the ground after Sartrum left as the sun began to kill him. TW: This episode contains references of violent content that may be disturbing to some listeners. I acknowledge that this content may be difficult and encourage you to do what is best for you. Hello there, my friends! This is the very first episode where we follow Sartrum's perspective to see why he showed up so disheveled and desperate to get Catherine back. I experimented a bit in this episode to make it seem more "horrific" than others due to the estranged nature of Sartrum's past, which he is reliving. Sounds like a lot of trauma is going on (hint: because there is!) I hope that everyone is staying as safe and healthy as they can in these trying times. We must remember that we are stronger together and weaker divided. I hope you thoroughly enjoy this episode, as there are more to come! If you like following Sartrum's perspective and would like to hear more episodes similar to this in the future, be sure to follow the official Dracul Instagram page @dracul.podcast !
