What happens when a book launch stops being about the book? It becomes a room full of stories. In this special LIVE edition of The MisFitNation, Rich LaMonica travels virtually to Southwest Oklahoma Brewing Company as US Army Veteran TJ Baird launches Warrior Dad surrounded by family, fellow veterans, friends, readers, and the community that helped shape his journey. TJ served 32 years in the Army, including nine combat deployments, but this conversation goes far beyond military service. This episode explores the quieter battles: The birthdays missed. The phone calls made from overseas. The cost of service on families. The transition from warrior to father. And the legacy we leave behind when the uniform finally comes off. What unfolds is not a traditional interview. It becomes a gathering. Family members share memories. Brothers-in-arms reflect on service. The “Warrior Wife” joins the conversation. Veterans laugh, remember, and honor those no longer with us. And TJ shares why Warrior Dad Stories is becoming more than a book — a growing platform built around storytelling, resilience, and helping others share their journeys. Topics Covered: • Leadership after service • Fatherhood and military life • Veteran transition • Family sacrifice • Purpose and identity • Resilience and recovery • Memorial Day reflections • Building legacy Key Moments: 00:00 Welcome to Warrior Dad Stories LIVE 24:00 Fatherhood after service 44:00 Family reflections 58:00 Warrior Wife joins the conversation 1:12:00 Leadership lessons from military life 1:38:00 The future of Warrior Dad Stories Some stories entertain. Today Patty welcomes Mark Steven Porro, a New Jersey native who spent 28 years in Hollywood, to discuss his bestselling, award-winning debut memoir, A Cup of Tea on the Commode, The book is about caring for his mother during the final three and a half years of her life after a near-death experience in 2011. He explains the title's origin from a daily bedside commode routine that included his mother's favorite tea, and shares how hospice taught him hands-on caregiving tasks such as treating bed sores, changing diapers, sponge bathing, and managing stress. Porro describes using humor to handle difficult moments, recounts stories about both parents, and notes a caregiver health crisis that led to emergency surgeries. He also talks about creating the organic snack brand Grandpa Po's Originals, life in the south of France, and an upcoming second book focused on his father.Find out more about Mark below:Choose your favorite bookstore to orderOur websiteOur Facebook pageInstagramTikTokOur YouTube channelEpisode Highlights:00:00 Meet Mark Porro01:04 Title Meaning Explained01:54 From Notes to Memoir02:38 Hospice Care Lessons04:46 Not a How To Book06:32 Humor as Medicine09:14 Dad Stories and Dignity12:58 Why Mark Became Caregiver16:47 Caregiver Burnout Warning18:37 Third Emergency Recovery18:58 Wild Hospital Meds20:16 Accidental Nonprofits Story21:11 Grandpa Poes Origins23:11 Flavors And Factory25:03 Mantras And Burnout25:35 Screenplay And Next Book27:08 Awards And Reader Letters28:24 Life In France30:15 Wine Actor Chocolate Picks32:56 Wrap Up And Next Guest

Step into another unforgettable episode of the Wise_N_Nerdy podcast with Charles and Joe—where laughter, life lessons, and a whole lot of nerd culture collide. The journey kicks off with the Question of the Week: “If you could have the soundtrack from any game or movie playing as your life's background music, which would you choose?” What follows is a fun and nostalgic deep dive into iconic soundtracks that could transform everyday life into something cinematic. From the peaceful, creative vibes of Minecraft, to the chaotic energy of Borderlands, the emotional melodies of August Rush, and the high-octane punk anthems of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, the hosts and listeners paint a vivid picture of what life would sound like with the perfect score. Then comes the roll of the dice—because no Wise_N_Nerdy episode is complete without a little randomness—and it lands on the “How Do I…?” segment. Here, Charles and Joe tackle a question every parent wrestles with: How do you raise independent kids without making them feel neglected? Through honest conversation and real-life experience, they break down the importance of balancing guidance with freedom—showing that encouragement, presence, and intentional support are the true keys to helping kids grow with confidence. But before things get too serious, the dice demand a tonal shift—enter the Bad Dad Jokes. Bob and Devocite unleash a rapid-fire barrage of groan-worthy puns and eye-roll-inducing punchlines. It's chaotic, it's cringey, and it's absolutely hilarious—the kind of humor that defines dad life at its finest. As the dice roll once more, we're treated to the “Parliament of Papas” segment, where Charles and Joe weigh in on a thought-provoking story pulled from Reddit. The scenario? A daycare worker gets fired for showing Veggie Tales to kids. What unfolds is a nuanced discussion about boundaries, values, and decision-making in parenting spaces—proving that sometimes the most unexpected topics lead to the most meaningful conversations. Next up, it's time for “What Are You Nerding Out About?”—a glimpse into what's currently fueling the hosts' passions. Charles shares his ongoing journey through the hustle lifestyle, including a new venture as a patient advocate, while Joe leans into what matters most: family. From binge-watching Solo Leveling with his kids to unplugging on a camping trip, Joe reminds us that sometimes the best “nerdy” moments are the ones spent together. Finally, the episode wraps with the always-entertaining “Daddy, Tell Me A Story” segment. Joe delivers a hilariously awkward tale from his middle school days involving a science teacher, a desk… and a very questionable wardrobe decision. It's the kind of story that sticks with you—equal parts bizarre and unforgettable. This episode is a perfect blend of humor, heart, and honest reflection—an invitation to laugh, learn, and maybe even see your own parenting journey a little differently. So whether you're here for the dad jokes, the deep conversations, or the shared love of fandom, there's something for everyone. Come be part of the community, embrace the chaos, and most importantly—Find your FAMdom. Wise_N_Nerdy: Where Fatherhood Meets Fandom Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Bobby is now a dad! He and his wife Caitlin just welcomed a baby girl. He tells the story of bringing her home for the first time, the meaning behind her name, their experience at the hospital and what the first days have been like. He also has a new respect for women after what he witnessed in the delivery room. Bobby also reveals his decision on whether or not he is going to be on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. We also get an update on Lunchbox being on The Price Is Right and if he's still possibly playing us all. We play one of the hardest (and most fun) games yet: guessing a famous song from just ONE random isolated word. It sounds easy… it’s not. Even the best players get stumped! Also, in the Anonymous Inbox, a listener asks: Is it okay to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Scotland without your wife? Bobby breaks down why you shouldn’t base big decisions on “tone” and the show debates what’s actually fair in a marriage.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, I open up about the emotional and practical work of supporting a young child through high anxiety — and what it means to stay grounded as a parent when your child's fear takes over. With thanks and insight from psychologist Sean Larsen, hypnotherapist Catherine Williams, and family counsellor Erica Spink, I explore how “bottom-up” fear works in a child's nervous system, why storytelling can be more powerful than reassurance, and how gentle exposure and family balance helped our son heal. What you'll hear in this episode:Simple family moments that restore connection — nature play, empathy, and advocacyHow a mild infection triggered deep anxiety in a six-year-oldWhy logic doesn't calm body-based fearHow storytelling can re-train a child's brainThe emotional load of co-regulation and the need for parental balanceThe small daily shifts that made a difference: softer mornings, more play, less pressure

... or how I traveled with kids on summer break, and all I got was this grape snow cone. This week, the Dads talk about the season of family vacations. While these trips are a tremendous amount of work, all the research and our lasting memories suggest that, although these journeys aren't exactly vacations, the family trip is incredibly valuable to the family unit. This episode explores some of the research — both academic and anecdotal — that supports our theory that these trips are great for families (if only in the long term), as well as some of the great country songs that can help us through the grind of the summer family vacation or family trip.Show Notes01:08: How do we define the family trip vs. a vacation? Well, Google and the all-powerful AI summary help us out by delivering a clear and concise explanation. 02:08: Benefits of a Family Trip: While it's exhausting, research seems to back the idea of taking a family trip. It keeps our family talking, helps our kids learn and enhances the bond between partners, no matter what was said when the directions were not followed exactly. 03:58: The Brutality of Traveling With Children: As a Stay-at-Home-Dad and “Default Parent,” Dave feels that family trips are often like business trips. So it's just parenting on the road as you deal with the “brutality of traveling with children.”06:28: Content Warning: The first mention of vomit. 08:33: Content Warning: The second mention of vomit.9:39: Content Warning: The third mention of vomit.11:35: Family Team-Building on the Family Trip: The idea of working together as a family during these trips helps the family grow together -- working as a team makes you a better family. 12:46: Dave's Notorious Family Trip to Sequoia National Park and the Fisher Price Toy Lantern.14:50: What is the best place to stay during a family trip? The rental house vs the hotel seems to be the debate. While the space and privacy seem to win out, the breakfast buffet is a huge plus.20:40: Do Family Trips Need to Be Educational? Research suggests that educational trips make kids smarter, but do trips need to be explicitly educational for kids to extract value from the trip? The Dads touch on how just changing it up a bit, doing things you want to do and working through the difficulties on the road provides the real educational value — and how Dad Stories (read: lies about things on the side of the road) are critical. 27:32: Content Warning: The fourth mention of vomit. 29:50: Conquering the Family Trip: The Dads discuss packing, planning spreadsheets, and other key tactics. 32:19: Content Warning: The fifth mention of vomit, and this one is intense. 33:14: Giving our Kids a 90s Summer: Is this possible? Should it be? 40:27: The Songs of the Summer: The Dads debate the greatest country music for the summer. As well as a few songs for cleaning up vomit. 51:17: Change My Mind: Donnie attempts to change Dave's mind about using profanity in front of the kids. It's a great f**ing conversation. There's a point where creating starts to feel like shouting into the void. You know you've got something meaningful to say, but the constant noise—online, in your head, from everyone else—makes it hard to hear your own voice. That frustration builds, especially when it feels like empty content gets more attention than thoughtful work. But deep down, the pull to create something real doesn't go away—it just waits for the right crack to break through. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5k1OR0jRis Reena Friedman Watts is a media pro and podcast host with deep roots in TV, including work on Jerry Springer and Court TV. We're only hours away from Canada taking on the USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off, which meant an opportunity to talk about the 4 Nations final, dad stories, the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary, and a whole lot more. The guys kicked off the Thursday episode of Real Life by discussing the Canada vs. USA 4 Nations final, which is coming up on Thursday, and how that tournament engaged fans all over the continent. While many folks weren't excited about the tournament before it began, it didn't take long before all of those doubters were fully wrapped up in the moment. Needless to say, there is a very real appetite for best-on-best hockey, and this tournament is a perfect example of that.Changing gears, Wanye told another dad story about going to pick up his little man from daycare and having his four-year-old son scream as loud as he could in his ear. As you'll hear — see what we did there — Wanye is stumped about what to do after ChatGPT told him to seek medical attention if the problem doesn't clear up in 24 hours. Wanye's story inspired Chalmers to rant about his boys' school schedule over the next two weeks, and how it's impossible to understand how little class time his boys actually have. Finally, the guys wrapped up the Thursday episode of Real Life with a chat about the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special. If you're a big fan of the legendary sketch show, the amount of content about the anniversary lately has been fantastic. As you'll hear, Chalmers was incredibly excited about the special and was not shy about sharing his favourite moments.
