Welcome to our August edition of MetCast. As we gear up for the Paralympic Games later this month, we catch up with Manchester Met visiting professor and honorary graduate Dame Sarah Storey, who is part of the Paralympic cycling squad for Paris 2024. Dame Sarah has made history with 17 gold, eight silver, and three bronze medals. From her rise to stardom at just 14 in Barcelona 1992, to her unstoppable success as a para cyclist, Sarah's journey is nothing short of extraordinary. With her sights set Paralympic glory once again, we had the privilege of catching up with Sarah at the Manchester Metropolitan Institute of Sport. We dive into her medal memories, her thoughts on the future of inclusive sports, and those all-important preparations for the Paris time trial and road race ahead of the games.
Dame Sarah Storey discusses her remarkable Paralympics career with Ely Oldroyd explaining how she developed her love for swimming, but ended up switching to cycling, where she continued to win gold after gold.
Dame Sarah Storey is Great Britain's most successful Paralympian, winning 17 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals. She was just 14 when she took two weeks off school to compete as a swimmer in the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics, where she won her first two gold medals. Since then, she has competed in a further seven Paralympics, switching to cycling from 2005. A TV documentary inspired Sarah's childhood ambition to take part in the Paralympics, even though her swimming club coach told her that it was too late - at the age of 10 - to start training for an elite career. After competing in four Paralympics in the pool, she decided to try cycling after persistent ear infections and chronic fatigue. She was immediately successful and has continued to win medals at both the Paralympics and World Championships in numerous events, breaking many world records. She is supported on and off the track by her husband, Barney Storey, who is also a gold medal-winning cyclist. They have two children, who were born in 2013 and 2017. Sarah is the Active Travel Commissioner in her home city of Manchester, and is still training with the aim of competing in the 2024 Paralympics in Paris – which would be her ninth games, at the age of 46. We start Episode 114 with a review of the fantastic news that England's Lionesses are into the football World Cup Final after a 3-1 win over co-hosts Australia in Sydney. They will take on Spain on Sunday, who beat Sweden 2-1 in their semi-final. We then look back over the weekend's Rugby Union internationals and the bemusing decision by the disciplinary panel to downgrade Owen Farrell's red card in England's win over Wales. This leaves Farrell clear to play in all of England's World Cup games. Scotland came close to a second successive win over France, being cruelly denied by a last-minute penalty. Leigh Leopards won their first Rugby League Challenge Cup Final in 52 years against Hull KR, and Saints won the first ever women's final to be held at Wembley. We also have the latest from Cricket's Hundred – including Tammy Beaumont getting the highest individual score by a batter, as well as a dramatic finish in the London derby at The Oval. We then bring you the highlights from the final week of the UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland, where Dame Sarah Storey won her 36th career gold. Our guest this week is our resident football correspondent Billy Carr, who joins us at the start of the Premier League season to give his insights on life for Spurs after Harry Kane, as well as his predictions at both ends of the table for the coming season. Another fantastic episode for you to enjoy!

In today's episode, I head to East London to the epicentre of what was once the Olympic Village during London 2012, to link up with a Paralympic cyclist who quite literally gives us a guided tour throughout our 1 Mile stroll. Since securing her 17th Paralympic Gold Medal during Tokyo 2020, my latest Monday Miler has become Great Britain's most successful Paralympic athlete of all time, the iconic Dame Sarah Storey. Her tally, sitting at 8 Olympics, consists of 17 Gold medals, 8 Silver and 3 Bronze is a phenomenal feat, and today we have a very special episode to mark the announcement that Dame Sarah is an official nominee for BBC Sports Personality of the Year. We delve into conversation around how the narrative and visibility of Para Sport can be raised, and how winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year would be a first ever for a Para athlete. So you know what to do, tune into BBC Sports Personality on the 19th December to GET YOUR VOTE IN! During our stroll we chat about the highs (of which there were many), and the lows of Sarah's career, and we have an honest conversation around the subject of bullying and how her strength of character saw her go on to be the true pioneer that Sarah is today. Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. How do elite athletes find the motivation to kick start their week come rain or shine? How do celebrities deliver no matter what the time of day? What knowledge can they pass on? Each episode drops on a Monday morning and plays out in real time. Aimee will meet each of her guests for a walk and a chat and over the course of the mile she will find out how they cope on a Monday morning - their idiosyncrasies, breakfast routines, alarm noises - and how, when they need to, find the motivation to kick-on through the week. Dropping every Monday as a bitesize piece of content and weekly dose of motivation - right when you need it - sharing some of Britain's greatest athletes' secrets on self-motivation, candid thoughts on what they struggle with and a sideways look at some of their more unusual morning habits. Head over to IG to watch the visuals of our episode and what we get up to on our Monday Mile. https://www.instagram.com/aimee_fuller/ Filmed and Edited by Jack Holmes.

In episode 16, “Accelerating the UK active travel market” we explored one of the most exciting areas of growth and opportunity within urban mobility, and why it matters so much to the Connected Places Catapult, and the future of healthy, connected and net zero places. Active travel is about creating options for us to move more. This can have a massive impact on our physical and mental health, the air quality in our overly congested cities by getting more commuters out of cars and onto bikes and footpaths, and the UK's collective effort of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In this episode we kick off a series of conversations we've been having with businesses, place leaders and experts in active travel. We ask what seizing this potentially huge opportunity for economic growth and public health and wellbeing looks like around the country. How do we design our cities for more active travel? How do we ensure that change is led by communities and accessible to all? And where are the opportunities, at home and abroad, for government and industry to get ahead of the curve? We begin by speaking to Dame Sarah Storey, one of the most decorated British athletes of all time and the Active Travel Commissioner for the Sheffield City Region. We also hear from Will Butler-Adams, CEO of Brompton Bikes, one of Britain's best known cycling brands and sold all over the world. Music on this episode is by Blue Dot Sessions and Phill Ward Music (www.phillward.com) Show notes To find out more about the Sheffield City Region's active travel programme, check out their Active Travel Implementation Plan, as well as the region's interactive Active Travel Map. On the 23rd June we're running an event on Connecting Homes for Healthy Ageing as part of our multi-year Homes for Healthy Ageing Programme which is contributing towards the UK Government's goal of supporting older people to live at home independently for 5+ years longer. We'll be exploring the barriers and opportunities for leveraging innovation to overcome the existing healthy ageing challenges in the UK. To register for free, click here. On the 1st July we'll also be launching our UK Cities Climate Investment Commission, in partnership with Core Cities and London Councils. We'll be presenting some early-stage findings on the estimated Net Zero investment need of the UK's Cities.
