The Blasters & Blades PodcastToday we had on the Super Duper Professional Nerd, Mister Dan Jolley. This episode was a lot of fun, we got nerdy about the past, present and future of speculative fiction. Maybe some Time Lords were involved, who can really tell. We talked about our shared love of Skyrim and then we talked about his book series The Demon-Sleuth Scrolls. I was curious enough to bookmark it for the audiobook in production! This was a fun interview, so go check out this episode. Lend us your eyes and ears, you won't be sorry!! Join us for a fun show! We're just a couple of nerdy Army veterans geeking out on things that go "abracadabra," "pew," "zoom," "boop-beep" and rhyme with Science Fiction & Fantasy. Somehow, we found a guy who LOVES Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. This week on Authorized, we invite Gus Spelman on to defend this Writers' Strike-era actioner, which he does so admirably. One thing no one can go to bat for, however, is Alan Dean Foster's tossed off, undercooked, overwritten steamer of a novelization. Who is this book even written for, at its 200+ page length and with its SAT prep ten dollar word vocabulary? One of the hardest books to get through any of us have read. We are back for the 2nd part of this important discussion with the PT Dr's, Dan & Alex. Having established in part 1 the prevalent bias and deep-rooted fitness misconceptions that continue to impact the wider industry, and recognising the ever-increasing public health needs, we go deeper down the rabbit hole to weigh up the role of client referral to other qualified specialists. In a never-ending information age, we will likely benefit from a more analytical fitness workforce who can think critically and seek reliable scientific evidence before laying down a solid, unbreakable knowledge and belief construct that strongly influences their coaching and behaviours. So, let's get to it: referral and critical thinking! Guest biographiesDr Alex De Lyon: an internationally accredited Personal Trainer and Health & Exercise Specialist with over 14 years of experience in health and fitness. He holds a PhD in the field of Sport & Exercise Science, an MSc in Sport & Exercise Psychology, and a First-Class degree in Sports Coaching & Performance. Alex's research has explored the role of fitness professionals in public health, with a particular focus on the knowledge, skills and qualities required of personal trainers. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, presented internationally, and included in fitness and leisure reports. Enjoy discussion, debate, and revealing research about the modern personal training industry! Bias is a common feature in everyone's life, but when bias becomes ingrained that it leads to fundamentally incorrect misconceptions that influence fitness trainer, coach and client behaviours, it has the potential to derail goal achievement and may even cause harm! Is there a growing requirement within the job role of the modern personal fitness trainer, that is not being addressed in vocational education? What are the problems of operating beyond professional scope of practice? All these are addressed in this important 2-part episode! Episode Notes Dr Dan Jolley comes on the show to talk about conspiracy theories and the psychology that underlies many of these beliefs. They can include just about any political and social event. Conspiracy theories around the death of Princess Diana and 9/11 seem incredible but there are sound psychological reasons why people believe them. And, of course, conspiracies about vaccines can have very real health consequences. Rather than dismissing conspiracy theorists we talk about the important efforts to understand how and why people feel like this, how we are all a little susceptible, and how we can engage with conspiracy theorists. People use conspiracy theories to make sense of the world - particularly when faced with major events that provoke anxiety and can seem hard to explain. Conspiracy theories offer a short-term hit of reassurance but they can, if left unchallenged, be associated with isolation and ostracisation. Some evidence also shows how our natural pattern recognition habits get triggered by conspiracy theories and as we try to make sense of the world it can become maladaptive. Dan also tells us about work going on, and research he is doing, into how we address conspiracy theories and the process of 'innoculation' against conspiracy theories. For those of you who have listened to the previous Let's Voltron episodes Dan Jolley has been a part of, you'll know Dan was a principal writer for the video game, Dying Light. Dying Light is an action survival game presented in first-person perspective. The game is set in a vast and dangerous open world. During the day, you roam an urban environment devastated by a mysterious epidemic, scavenging for supplies and crafting weapons to help you defeat the hordes of mindless, flesh-hungry enemies the plague has created. At night, the hunter becomes the prey as the infected grow in strength and aggression - but even more lethal are the nocturnal, inhuman predators that leave their nests to feed. You will need to make use of all your skills and any available means to survive till dawn. Dying Light can be purchased on 3 different video game platforms: PC XBOX One PlayStation 4 If you do buy it and enjoy the game, please let Dan know. He would love to hear your feedback. Happy 1st Anniversary to Let's Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast! I am proud to share this review of everything that happened on the Let's Voltron Podcast from this past year, as well as some anniversary greetings that Voltron Fans left us on voicemail. As I went through recording this 35th podcast episode, it became very clear that I have a lot of people to thank for making this past year so special for all the Voltron Fans. So, I have to start by thanking the wonderful people at World Events Productions for carrying the Voltron torch these past 30 years, and for coming on the podcast to share the information that can only come from the home office in St. Louis. So, a very special thank you to Ted Koplar, Bob Koplar and Tiffany Ilardi. Extra thanks to Bob Koplar for helping me walk through all these podcast episodes. I really want to thank Jeremy Corray for helping get this podcast started in December 2013, and for his continued support as a resource and occasional co-host. I want to thank Michael French for making many episodes special with his expert commentary and for carrying the Blazing Sword as a great co-host. I have to thank Dan Jolley for being a great fan-favorite guest and a super co-host when we review the original Voltron episodes. Big thank you to Gregory Tyler for being a great Voltron Fan and for bringing a comprehensive look at Vehicle Team Voltron to the listeners of the podcast. The rest of the people on this list have all been terrific contributors to the podcast and were all important to the success of the 1st year of Let's Voltron. Here they are, in no particular order: Mark Oliver, Tommy Yune, George Sohn, Seth Green, Clare Grant, Brian “Smitty” Smith, Lucas Morrell, Marc Handler, Franklin Cofod, John Teichmann, Casey Snider, Chee-toy, Talley LaFlamme, Moira, Brandon Thomas, Cubbieberry, Rileah Vanderbilt, Chris Wofford, Neil Ross, Josh McKillips, N. Steven Harris, Jacob Chabot, Linda Endinger, Todd Matthy, Tara Scully, Traci Todd, Josh Bernard, Aaron Goins, Jon Eckert, Tony and Rose Tuski, Kim Morrell, and Master Harry Pfister (a true inspiration). Marc Morrell and Dan Jolley review 4 more episodes (13-16) from Voltron: Defender of the Universe (Lion Force). Dan keeps us up to date on his career, and Marc talks about the 30th Anniversary Book and panel at New York Comic Con, as well as book signings and interviews. If you recall, we haven't reviewed the Original Series Voltron Episodes since Podcast #22. We finished reviewing Episode 12 during that podcast. So, this podcast episode covers the following Original Series Voltron episodes (Beast King GoLion episode titles in parenthesis): #13 – The Witch Gets a Facelift (Introducing Beautiful Honerva) #14 – Yurak Gets His Pink Slip (The Crown Prince of Hell) #15 – Give Me Your Princess (Overcome the Phantom of Shirogane) #16 – Bridge Over the River Chozzerai (The Legendary Bridge of Love) Listen as Marc brings back Dan Jolley, our special guest from Podcast #7, to discuss the differences between the Voltron and GoLion versions of these 4 episodes. This story arc sees the exit of Commander Yurak and the entrance of Prince Lotor, who takes over as the Commander in Chief of the Drule Forces on Planet Doom. Lotor also has a strong infatuation with Princess Allura that is a continuous theme throughout the rest of the series. Marc also talks about the 30th Anniversary Book, which is being released to stores everywhere on Tuesday, October 28. If you haven't pre-ordered it, you can pick up a copy on Tuesday, wherever books are sold. Online, you can also purchase the Kindle, e-book, Nook, and other digital versions of the book through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Google Play, and other retail sites. Thanks for listening!
Marc Morrell and Special Guest Host Dan Jolley review 4 more episodes from the Original Lion Force Voltron Series, where they provide comparisons with the GoLion episodes from which these Voltron episodes were made. Dan provides a unique perspective, since he has watched these episodes as a fan when he was a kid, then watched these episodes as an adult writer, and had to research these episodes again as a writer of Voltron Comics for Devil's Due Publishing. If you recall, we haven't reviewed the Original Series Voltron Episodes since Podcast #15. We finished reviewing Episode 8 The Stolen Lion (Stolen Blue Lion) during that podcast. So, this podcast episode covers the following Original Series Voltron episodes (Beast King GoLion episode titles in parenthesis): 9 – A Pretty Spy (Girl of the Land of Evil) 10 – Secret of the White Lion (Curse of the White Lion) 11 - Surrender (Red Rain of Hell) 12 - Bad Birthday Party (Evil Doings of the Emperor) Listen as Marc brings back Dan Jolley, our special guest from Podcast #7, to discuss the differences between the Voltron and GoLion versions of these 4 episodes. This story arc shows that Princess Allura is still unsure of herself in her role on the team. It also shows that Voltron is not always the one who saves the day. Marc closes out the episode with a preview of upcoming episodes, including a surprise episode from San Diego Comic-Con, a Vehicle Voltron episode, and possibly, an interview with one of the voice actors from the original Voltron Series. Thanks for listening!

Never underestimate the power of Voltron Fans! That’s what we learned this week when a Twitter conversation started a string of events that led us to our special guest this week: Voltron DDP Comics Author Dan Jolley. As you will find out from listening to this podcast episode, Dan Jolley is overwhelmed by the fan support for his version of the Voltron story. Since he was the first one to create true character backstories and bios for many of the characters we were introduced to by the original TV series, he was given free reign by WEP to make this universe his own. Dan’s intuition served him well as the major plot points came together, and we saw these characters mature before our eyes with every issue of the DDP Comics from 2003-2004. As this episode begins, Marc makes the colorful connection between Voltron and the Olympics, and Mike remarks that both Lion Force Voltron and Vehicle Voltron could be our team to cheer for in the best Olympics ever. Then, we welcome Dan Jolley to the podcast and we go back in time to 2003, when Dan first started working with Image Comics/Devils Due Publishing on the Voltron: Defender of the Universe Comics. This enlightening conversation hits many aspects of the Voltron story, from the origin of Voltron to why the space mice won’t be wearing any tutus. You may even hear what Dan would write about if he was able to continue writing some more Voltron comics. He is certainly open to the idea, and would love to work with World Events Productions. For those of you that submitted questions, listen carefully, as Dan answers your questions, and chooses one of you to receive a signed copy of one of the original Dan Jolley DDP Voltron Comics Issues in Mint Condition! Dan also tells us about two current projects he is working on with Dark Horse Comics: Bloodhound: Crowbar Medicine Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy It was a real blast having Dan on the Let’s Voltron Podcast, and we have all of you to thank for it! Give us more suggestions for people you would like to hear us interview on the podcast in the comments below. Let’s Voltron! Follow Dan Jolley on Twitter and on his website, The Jolleyverse. The Voltron Omnibus is available here.
