Before we get to this week's episode, I have a question for you. And that question is … do you have any questions for me? I ask because we're coming up on the 500th episode of The Sewers of Paris next month, and to celebrate I'm going to be doing a special Q&A episode where I answer questions from listeners. So if you have anything you'd like to ask — whether it's about the show, or for recommendations, or about pop culture and queer history — please send it along to at matt@mattbaume.com.Also, a head's up that may be of interest: This week sees the release of Part 1 of Wicked — a musical inspired by The Wizard of Oz. And although, when I initially heard about the film, years ago, my first reaction was “oh, there's no way that'll be any good” … folks, I've seen it, and it is, in fact, very good. So to mark the movie's release, I'm releasing special episode of my companion podcast, Matt's So-Cast Pod, where we talk about the strange parallels between the musical Wicked and the TV show My So-Called Life — both written by the same woman, Winnie Holzman. And also, on this week's Sewers of Paris, we're diving deep into the archives for a chat about why The Wizard of Oz has had particular resonance for gay men ever since the book was first published over a hundred and twenty years ago. My guest is Josh Trujillo, who was so obsessed with Oz that as a kid he attended Oz conventions, and discovered that they served as a sort of meeting-place for older closeted gay men who felt unable to meet in public or in bars.We spoke back in 2015 — it was the third-ever episode of this podcast! So my apologies that the audio quality is at times a little peaky. Nevertheless I hope you'll enjoy this trip back in time.

It is the story of three Victorian-era women who experience a home for “fallen” women in very different ways. What makes this novel especially unique is that Kelly got the idea for it from her time interning at The Filson Historical Society while she was completing her dissertation at the University of Louisville. She came across historic documents about a home for pregnant women here in Louisville and fictionalized them to create a powerful story. While the story is about a tough time for women over a century ago. This is a summer rerun of an episode that originally went life in May 2023. It's good even if you think you don't care about Green Acres, we swear! “What's in a Name?” (February 16, 1966) On a show all about the zany inhabitants of Hooterville, Ralph Monroe (Mary Grace Canfield) stands out because the most unusual thing about her is her name. She works as a carpenter and dresses for her work, but that name alone is enough that most Hootervillians don't know what pronoun to use for her. As we discuss with special guest Josh Trujillo, Ralph is not a trans character, but this episode about her seeking a new name so she can get married, offers enough to qualify her as interesting enough to merit her own episode of this podcast… darling. Since this episode originally went life, Josh's book, WASHINGTON'S GAY GENERAL, went on sale. GO BUY IT!

Josh Trujillo didn't set out to become a brewer, but after 16 years at Marble (https://marblebrewery.com)—the last eight of which he's served in the top brewing role—he's found it to be a perfect vocation given his mix of technical and tasting aptitude. Over the years, Marble has pursued ways other integrating hops into both traditional and modern lagers, and their judiciously dry-hopped Pilsner even won 2014 World Beer Cup gold employing a quarter-pound-per-barrel dry hop at the time. Now, Marble is stretching out in the hoppy lager space with West Coast pils, and mirroring that smaller beer with their approach to cold IPA, while their MavLab R&D brewery continues to rack up medals for both traditional ales and lagers as well as more progressive styles. In this episode, Trujillo shares their approach to brewing lager, including: Brewing rice and corn lagers with two row pale malt and a single infusion mash Managing runoff to avoid astringency Extending boils to manage DMS production Designing subtle yet characterful hop blends for dry-hopped Pilsner Moving hot side hops to the whirpool for more hop expression Marrying the classic with the contemporary in West Coast pils Brewing hoppy beers with new twists on classic hops And more. “D&D” (November 18, 2021) Beware the gay ghost! What are the odds that when your friend writes a book about Baron von Steuben, allegedly gay Revolutionary War hero, there would also be a current sitcom that features a gay Revolutionary War character? Pretty slim, we'd say! But this happy coincidence allowed us to not only promote Josh Trujillo's new book, Washington's Gay General: The Legends and Loves of Baron Von Steuben, but also to dive into Ghosts, the CBS sitcom that is one of the more popular sitcoms on TV today. We're happy to report that being a CBS sitcom means something quite different today than it did just a few years ago. You should probably want a copy of Josh's book. Buy a copy here! Hello, and welcome to the Sewers of Paris! This week is the 80th anniversary of the premiere of The Wizard of Oz, and to commemorate that, we're diving into the Sewers of Paris archives. The very first interview I recorded for the show was with Josh Trujillo, a writer then based in LA and now living in New York. The Wizard of Oz played a major role in his life -- as a kid, he was obsessed with film, and later discovered that Oz conventions (yes, there really is such a thing) served as a sort of meeting-place for older closeted gay men. With the movie hitting 80s years old this week, it's a fine time to look back at the impact that it's had on culture -- particularly the culture of we people known in certain circles as friends of Dorothy. We'll have that conversation in a moment. First a heads-up about some upcoming live events I'll be hosting! This coming Sunday, August 18th, we're doing a livestream of Queens of Adventure -- a comedy storytelling show where drag queens play Dungeons & Dragons. I hope you'll join us at 4pm Pacific at youtube.com/queensofadventure to see me and our party of drag artists journey into the unknown! That's this Sunday, August 18, at 4pm pacific. And if you're going to be in Seattle, we're doing two live shows later this month. The first is on Wednesday, August 28 at Kremwerk -- tickets to that are now on sale at QueensOfAdventure.com. And the second show is going to a panel as part of PAX West -- so if you have PAX badge, join us on Sunday September 1st at 8pm in the Sasquatch theater.Details on all those shows is at QueensOfAdventure.com.

What an episode this week! To kick it off we reminisce on the greatness of the one Leonard Nimoy, and the semi foolishness of the one Michelle Rodriguez. Plus we interview Josh Trujillo & Rob Hebert the creators of the Death Saves Anthology, a new graphic novel collection featuring tales about some of our favorite dead fantasy characters and what death means in fictional tales. So on the week that we lose one of the great ones we reflect on what it means death means to fictional characters. Fitting, and straightening out M Rod is just a bonus.

Cerebro was introduced in 1963 as a computer with wires used to detect mutant threats.
