Accomplished screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick ('Final Destination", "Final Destination 2", "The Final Wish", "Dead Awake") shares tips on how to successfully pursue a career in Hollywood, how important your network and circle is, and how to deal with rejection and frustration.
While Jeffrey Reddick is keen to point out that his directorial debut, Don't Look Bac (out Oct. 16), shouldn't really be filed under "horror," the writer-turned-filmmaker is also anxious to assure readers that he is more than happy to be associated with scary movies. "I'm a genre fan, but this is definitely more of a mystery-thriller," Reddick tells EW. "It's about a group of people who witness somebody being assaulted in a park and don't help, and the victim dies. Somebody videotapes it, and the people are outed, and someone or something starts coming after them. It's got scary moments in it, for sure. But because of the nature of the story I had to keep what was behind the deaths a mystery, so we don't have the set pieces you would expect in a horror film." Regardless, Reddick has certainly spent much of his career in the terror zone, whether it's coming up with the idea for the Final Destination franchise or writing the 2008 Day of the Dead remake and the 2016 sleep paralysis movie Dead Awake. To help us celebrate the Halloween season, Reddick agreed to talk about his life in horror.

Episode 93 - Sleep Par-ale-ysis As a horror movie podcast, we are certainly no strangers to horrifying imagery. On any given day you can find us watching things that other people only see in their nightmares. Things that would paralyze them with fear, figuratively speaking. Then there are the unfortunate souls for whom being paralyzed by their nightmares is all too real. Sleep paralysis is a strange, often misunderstood, affliction that affects more people than you may realize. Then there is the even more terrifying scenario of waking up to realize that your nightmare has bled into real life. You are trapped, you can't breathe, and realize that, like it or not, you are Jim's wife, and there is no escaping that hell. This week we tried to fight sleep with some Hotbox Coffee Porter from Oskar Blues Brewery, then we discussed a documentary and a film that both explore the strange phenomenon of sleep paralysis. A standout graduate of Stephen F. Austin University's film program, writer-director Phillip Guzman has shined since bursting onto the scene with “The Lawless”, a crime-thriller feature made for just $7,500. His follow-up projects “Desdemona: A Love Story”, “2:22”, and “A Kiss and a Promise” brought numerous festival awards and acclaim. After seeing the latter, Jeffrey Reddick (creator of "Final Destination") personally endorsed Guzman to helm the author's newest horror franchise, "Dead Awake", Guzman's first take at both the horror genre and another writer's material. Though born in south Texas, Guzman spent his formative years growing up in Europe, giving him a unique perspective on the world and cinema from an American. James LaMarr is an award-winning feature film producer with more than a decade of experience in the entertainment industry. A dedicated Texas A&M University alumnus, he started his career in front of the camera as an actor before transitioning to producing – though he can still be spotted doing the occasional cameo in the projects he produces. His most recent completed film is the Shriekfest 2017 winner for Best Thriller Feature, “Dead Awake”. Phillip and James have produced their projects through their Austin-based company Incendiary Features since 2007. Together they have worked on “The Lawless”, “2:22”, “Desdemona: A Love Story”, and “Dead Awake”, the latter of which was recently picked up for a theatrical release by FilmRise in early 2017. Their upcoming feature “200 Hours”, a paranormal horror set in the 80s, is currently in post-production.
