It wasn't a given that Deni Hines would pursue a career a music. Despite her mother, Marcia Hines, being one of the most recognisable pop stars in Australia, Deni had other interests and suffered from performance anxiety in her younger years. But her vocal talent soon got her snapped up as a backing singer for artists like Wa Wa Nee, Peter Blakeley and Kylie Minogue. It was her voice that also saw her hired as the latest frontperson for funk/dance band Rockmelons. In a frank and unflinching interview, Deni shares exactly what she thought of their collaboration and the hits that ensued. She also recalls guesting on "Not Enough Time" by INXS and what Michael Hutchence was like to work with in the studio. Then, after a solo deal in the US fell apart for reasons beyond her control, Deni landed at Mushroom Records and scored a top 5 hit with "It's Alright". She describes the process of putting together her debut album, Imagination, in London and follow-up singles like "I'm Not In Love" and "Delicious", a duet with Don-E that was added to the UK version of the album (retitled Pay Attention). When her time at Mushroom came to an end — following early 2000s single "Frenzy" — Deni went independent, and she talks about her various projects over the past couple of decades, including Water For Chocolate, The Soul Sessions and her upcoming album, due in 2024.Bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/aussieTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @TurnAroundOnJoyInstagram: @chartbeatsau, @joyturnbeataroundEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com
From their beginnings holding warehouse parties in Sydney's inner city to their string of chart hits in the late '80s and early '90s, Rockmelons always stood out from the rest of the Australian music scene by championing genres that few others did — and taking them mainstream. Formed by the core trio of Ray Medhurst and brothers Bryon and Jonathon Jones, the funk/soul/R&B/hip-hop/dance-influenced band also welcomed a series of regular and guest vocalists to their line-up, including John Kenny (the singer of "Rhymes" and "New Groove", among others), Sandi Chick, Peter Blakeley, Wendy Matthews and Deni Hines (who fronted "Ain't No Sunshine", "That Word (L.O.V.E.)" and "It's Not Over"). In an in-depth interview, Bryon and Ray recall the hurdles they surmounted on first two albums Tales Of The City and Form One Planet — lack of radio support, friction with certain collaborators, recording delays — and their against-the-odds success. They also talk about 2002's comeback album, Rockies 3, and the spanner in the works that prevented that enjoying a higher profile. On the show today… In Australian TV news, the Seven Network has announced the full cast for the second season of Dancing With The Stars: All Stars. Quite a few familiar names are in the mix, in a bid for a second shot at dancing glory, but it's the new slate of wild card entries we need to talk about. Plus, the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards took place today and a few stars made a bit of splash on the red carpet with outfits that looked straight out of The Handmaid's Tale and American Horror Story. There were also some wild moments at the start of the ceremony, but there's also been a drastic change to how people now talk at awards shows that we need to unpack. And reports have surfaced that a second Kim Kardashian sex tape is in existence and is being shopped around to potential buyers. Kim's team have already stepped in to shut down the situation, but it's led to the story around her original sex tape resurfacing. A story that's been reported incorrectly for decades. When Marcia Hines is your mother some would say it is no surprise you would go on to have a successful singing career. But Marcia had no idea Deni Hines could sing. She was literally singing in the kitchen when she was discovered and catapulted into the entertainment industry. An industry that Deni Hines has mixed feelings about. In their chat, Deni shares with Matt her remarkable musical journey. Including her challenges with race, her thoughts on celebrity and her hit song that makes her cringe.

ARIA Award winning singer/songwriter Deni Hines will release her brand new studio album “The Soul Sessions” worldwide on November 18. The album will be released in Japan on November 16 via PVine, and is already creating a buzz prerelease. The forthcoming lead single “What About Love” is a modern Motownhomage written by Deni and Sydney producer/writer Eddie Said of Kings X Music. The film clip was directed by Award winning film maker Dean Francis. His recent film, the controversial “Drown” has been a huge festival success worldwide, & Dean and Deni worked together on the 2016 Mardi Gras Queer Screen Film Festival trailer. “The Soul Sessions” is a glimpse into some of the artists who influenced and shaped Deni’s musical pallet. The album features her interpretations of songs from luminaries including King Curtis, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Anita Baker, Jill Scott, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston among others. The album also includes 3 original songs cowritten by Deni, including a brand new acoustic version of her 2001 song “Runnin’”, written with Dennis & Darren Dowlut. This version serves as a tribute to Darren who passed away in 2005. The digital EP of “What About Love” will be released on 2nd December, and will include remixes by UK producers/remixers The Good Girls [Azealia Banks, Akon, Philip George] and Sydney DJ/producer Alex Taylor, in addition to an unplugged version. “The Soul Sessions” features cover art from celebrated artist Gabrielle Pool
Picking up where we last left off, I'm dropping a first for Party Favorz. I figured if we're going to do an Almighty Definitive Anthems why not 7th Heaven as well? After all, DJ Andy Almighty ran the production team for Almighty Records for 8 years and then split off to form 7th Heaven which has been going strong for quite some time now. The set starts off with DJ Stonedog's Big Gay Anthem, which for better or worse is a smorgasbord of virtually every cliché gay anthem to ever grace our conscience. The song basically names drops a who's who of every gay anthem from the past and I mean EVERY. From Somewhere Over the Rainbow, to Dancing Queen to Born This Way, no stone was left unturned. Some are not as easy to pick up on but if you listen closely your favorite anthem is likely in there. PLAYPOD 12.01 DJ Steve Sherwood (SFO) T-Dance Ministry ----- DJ Steve Sherwood Website: http://www.djstevesherwood.com/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/djstevesherwood SoundCloud: http://djstevensherwood.podomatic.com/ DJ Steve Sherwood first began listening to electronic music in the late 90's when his younger sister unknowingly left a cassette tape with a live set by Carl Cox on the floor of his car. He quickly fell for the harder side of dance music and became a regular at underground raves held in the Arizona desert. In the summer of 2000, he moved to San Francisco and was transformed by the diverse local dance scene, which includes parties like Universe, Pleasuredome, Mass, Fag Fridays, and Trannyshack. After a year of immersing himself in San Francisco's vibrant nightlife Steve bought a pair of Technics turntables off of Craigslist and began crafting his own unique sound that incorporates elements of vocal, disco, tribal, and progressive house with occasional forays into techno and trance. A decade later he finds himself bringing his signature sound to a diverse set of parties around the globe. Recent appearances include REAL BAD XXIII, Tonker London, Industry, Disco Cherry, PLAY T-Dance, Los Angeles Pride, REACH Pride T-Dance, and Gus Presents. Sherwood is also a resident DJ with Bearracuda in San Francisco and has travelled with the party to Vancouver, Los Angeles, and Austin. ----- Track Listings: 01.
