James Hagler joins Paul and the first subject they covered was to talk about his relationship with his dad, Marvelous Marvin Hagler. They discussed James growing up with his dad, their differences in adulthood and how they reconciled before his dad passed away in 2021. James talked about going to the gym in his youth and the influence his uncle Robbie had on him. James told Paul about his family and they discussed the path that his son James Jr. has taken and while they get along and talk, they don't talk about boxing. Paul asked James about his perspective on several of his dad's most famous fights against boxers like Duran, Hearns and Leonard. Paul told James how much he admired his Dad and they talked about James' boxing promotion company and what he hopes to achieve in the future. James finished by talking about and telling a story or two about George Foreman.

This is the account of the brutal massacre endured by the Black Donnellys of Biddulph, Ontario during the 19th century. The Black Donnellys, an immigrant family hailing from Ireland, gained notoriety due to allegations of their involvement in crimes and acts of violence. Eventually, they became victims themselves when the local townspeople subjected them to a savage lynching. Their narrative encompasses rural conflicts, strained community relations, vendettas rooted in religious differences, and a heartbreaking conclusion. Originally from County Tipperary, Ireland, the Donnelly family settled in the rural township of Biddulph Ontario in the mid-19th century. James and Johannah Donnelly, along with their five children—James Jr., William, Bridget, Robert, and Thomas—established a farm and integrated into the local community. However, tensions between the Donnellys and their neighbors gradually intensified. The Donnellys were viewed by many as squatters, outsiders, and criminals. The local animosity was fueled by their perceived audacious conduct and alleged involvement in numerous petty crimes. Furthermore, the religious and cultural divide between the Donnellys, who were of Irish Catholic descent, and their Protestant counterparts in the area added another layer of complexity, reviving age-old rivalries from England. James Raymond Jordan Sr. was born in 1936, in Wallace, North Carolina. In 1957 he married Deloris Peoples and had five children James Jr. (Ronnie), Deloris, Larry, Michael, and Roslyn Jordan. He also was a part of the airforce. After moving to New York to receive training as a mechanic under a GI bill later relocated back to North Carolina, Wilmington. He was an avid sports fan and almost went pro baseball, he imparted his love for sports to his sons and became one of Michael Jordan's biggest influences in his basketball career. In the height of Michael Jordan's reign in basketball in the 1990's the unthinkable took place. After making a trip to Wilmington for a co-worker's funeral James went missing. He was expected to go to Chicago to attend a golf tournament with Michael. Just short of his 57th birthday in 1993, James was found deceased and his car abandoned. The police captured the perpetrators quickly, but this story is not as open and shut as many think. Dette er sæson 7, episode 253, og i dag skal vi til et stykke Danmarkshistorie på de Amerikanske Jomfruøer, som vi måske bedre kender som Dansk Vestindien. PÅ KRYDSTOGT I EN PANDEMI Denne episode er optaget for kort tid siden, da krydstogtskibe begyndte at sejle igen efter pandemien. Og den er jo stadig ret nærværende – specielt i Florida, hvor vi starter, så Celebrity Cruises har taget rigtig mange forholdsregler for at forhindre, at der er smitte på skibet. Alle skal være vaccinerede og alligevel skal vi alle møde op med en frisk Corona-test. De har ændret på ruten (som jeg fortalte om i den seneste episode), og så er der stop på turen, hvor vi ikke må gå i land, medmindre vi køber en af deres ekskursioner, hvor de har mere styr på, at sikkerheden er i top. Så jeg føler mig ret sikker på, at der ikke bliver smitteudbrud ombord – selvom det nok ville være med til at denne podcast ville gå viral. VELKOMMEN TIL SAINT CROIX Da vi sætter fod på den første af seks caribiske øer, bliver vi mødt af dansende piger, en DJ og et par fyre på stylter. Og jeg har glædet mig meget til at komme netop hertil. Som dansker, der har lidt historisk nysgerrighed er dette et spændende sted at besøge. Men lad os starte med lidt fakta om hvor vi er: MAN KAN STADIG SE NOGET DANSK HER Der er stadig noget dansk at se her. Her på Saint Croix så jeg både en Kongensgade, en Kirkegade og i dag besøger jeg både Frederiksted og Christiansted. Jeg gik også en tur på kirkegården og så mange danske …sen-navne. For eksempel var der gravsted for ”Frederik Jøgen Christensen fra Køge”. Ja, der står Jøgen, men jeg mistænker, at det er gravsten-manden, der har lavet en stavefejl efter han havde brugt meget energi på at finde ud af at lave et Ø. EN MEGET STOR EJENDOMSHANDEL De Amerikanske Jomfruøer (eller US Virgin Islands) hed Dansk Vestindien indtil Danmark solgte øerne til USA tilbage i marts 1917. Prisen var 25 millioner dollars i guld, hvilket vil være omkring 554 millioner dollars i nutidens penge. Jeg tror, at Trump ville kalde dette en ”meget stor ejendomshandel”. Bemærk, at dette var tilbage, hvor vi solgte dele af vores kongerige. Grønland er ikke til salg. HOVEDSTADEN ER IKKE PÅ DEN STØRSTE JOMFRU-Ø Saint Croix er den største af øerne, men hovedstaden Charlotte Amalie ligger på Saint Thomas. DEN SIDSTE JUMFRU De fleste kender de tre øer, St. Jan, St. Thomas og St. Croix, men der er faktisk kommet en fjerde til – for ikke så mange år siden. Det er den lille ø ”Water Island”, som ligger tæt ved St. Thomas. Men den er også meget lille: Kun omkring to kvadratkilometer. USA købte øen for bare 10.000 dollars. De lokale kalder den ”The Last Virgin”. HALVDELEN AF BEFOLKNINGEN BOR PÅ SAINT CROIX Der bor lidt mere end 50.000 mennesker på Saint Croix, hvilket er næsten halvdelen af den samlede befolkning i dette territorie. ØEN HAR ET LILLE BJERG Selvom øen er lille, så har de faktisk et bjerg, der er omkring dobbelt så højt som Himmelbjerget. Det højeste punkt på St. Croix, Mount Eagle er 355 meter højt. TO HOVEDBYER HAR GIVET ØEN SIT KÆLENAVN St. Croix har kælenavnet ”Twin City” efter de to byer, Frederiksted i den vestlige del (hvor vores skib ligger til) og den lidt større, Christiansted, i den nordøstlige del af øen (hvor jeg skal til senere i dag). EN KAFFE OG TO SAMTALER, TAK Jeg starter min dag i Frederiksted inden jeg tager på byvandring i Christiansted. Jeg gik lidt rundt i byen og endte på en café, med navnet, Polly's at the Pier. Her ville jeg nyde både en kop kaffe og noget Wi-Fi, der var en del hurtigere end det skibet kan præstere.   Her falder jeg i snak med ejeren, Susan, som fortæller mig, at hun valgte at forlade Colorado for at finde et sted med lidt varmere klima efter hun gik på pension. Og til sin egen store overraskelse, så ”kom hun til” at købe en café midt i en pandemi. Og efter den første måned, der var langsom, er det faktisk gået rigtig godt. Hun nyder livet her, og har ingen planer om at forlade Saint Croix – selvom der både er det, de kalder ”island-time” og at man godt kan få lidt økuller ind i mellem. Vi sidder I caféens baggård med høns rendende rundt mellem bordene. Der er også et sted heromme, hvor man kan leje cykler, og her møder jeg Rebecca, som er født og opvokset her. Du bliver nødt til at lytte til episoden for at høre, hvad de to skønne kvinder har at sige. Og så vil du også høre, at min alarm pludselig ringer for at minde mig om, at jeg skal gøre mig klar til at tage på tur til Christiansted. CHRISTIANSTED OG MANDEN PÅ 10-DOLLAR-SEDLEN Inden byvandringen starter vores guide med at læse en lang besked, hun har fået fra Celebrity Cruises. Den handler om alle de ting, vi skal huske omkring, hvordan man opfører sig i en pandemi. Med andre ord, ting vi alle har hørt 200 millioner gange før de seneste 18 måneder. Vi skal vaske hænder, holde afstand og bære maske. Man bliver lidt træt – selvom det naturligvis er rart at vide, at de tænker på vores sikkerhed. VORES HIMMELSKE TURGUIDE Guiden på denne tur er en lidt ældre kvinde med de himmelske navn ”Heavenly Petersen”. Ja, hendes fornavn er virkelig Heavenly. Og hendes efternavn er Petersen – stavet på den danske måde. Hun bekræfter min mistanke om, at hun har danske rødder, men reagerer slet ikke da jeg fortæller hende, at jeg er fra Danmark. Jeg havde ellers forventet ee “wow, virkelig?” eller noget i den dur, men intet. Jeg tænkte, at hun nok ikke havde hørt mig, så jeg gentog mig selv. Og Heavenly gentog sin larmende stilhed. Det er måske slet ikke så specielt at være dansker i Caribien, som jeg havde troet, men jeg må indrømme, at jeg synes, at det var så underligt, at jeg fortsat ikke troede, at hun havde hørt mig. Men senere, da vi står foran indgangen til Fort Christiansværn og ser et Skilderhus, nævner jeg, at der også står den slags foran Amalienborg i København. Og så siger hun: ”Nå ja, du er herren fra Danmark”. MIT NAVN ER ALEXANDER HAMILTON " How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished in squalor, grow up to be a hero and a scholar?" Disse ord er fra den berømte Broadway musical om Alexander Hamilton. Og det var en nyhed for mig, at han faktisk voksede op her på Saint Croix – inden han blev en af USA's ”Founding Fathers” og fik sit ansigt på den amerikanske 10-dollar-seddel. Vi går indenfor på Fort Christiansværn og hører mere om ham og især om hans mor, Rachel Faucett Lavien, som tilbragte tid i en fængselscelle her. HISTORIEN OM HAMILTON OG HANS MOR, RACHEL Heavenly fortæller os om Rachel og Alexander, da vi står i hendes celle, som de i dag kalder ”Rachel's Room”. Her tilbragte hun seks måneder bag lås og slå, fordi hendes mand fik hende anholdt. En mand, som Heavenly kalder ”ældre mand”, den 32-årige John Michael Lavien. Ifølge Heavenly blev hun anholdt for at havde opført sig flirtende. Jeg har researchet lidt, og det lader til at hun vist havde gjort mere end at flirte. Mens hun var gift med den ”gamle mand” blev hun taget med bukserne nede sammen med en anden mand. Hun og Cronenberg blev taget på fersk gerning – nøgne i et soveværelse og som det stod i retsprotokollen, ”med omstændigheder der tilstrækkeligt demonstrerer deres skamløse samleje og skandaløse opførsel”. Da de blev løsladt, blev Cronenburg udvist fra øen og han dukkede senere op på St. Thomas. Rachel blev løsladt da hun lovede at tage tilbage til sin mand, at hun ville opføre sig pænt og gøre alt, hvad han bad hende om. Men hun snød ham. Så snart hun kunne forlod hun også Saint Croix og tog tilbage til Nevis, hvor hun kom fra. Nevis er en anden caribisk ø og en del af det lille land Saint Kitts and Nevis. Her mødte hun skotten, James Hamilton, og sammen fik de to sønner mens hun stadig var gift med Lavien: James Hamilton Jr og den yngste, som de valgte at opkalde efter hans farfar, Alexander Hamilton. I 1759, bad Lavien om skilsmisse. På dette tidspunkt var James Jr seks år og Alexander to (eller måske fire – der er lidt usikkerhed om, hvornår han var født). Da James Hamilton Sr fandt ud af, at hun faktisk allerede var gift, forlod han hende, og hun måtte forsørge de to drenge alene. Det gjorde hun ved at drive en lille butik her tilbage i Cristiansted. I boarded the Celebrity Cruise ship, Equinox, on the pier in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with my cabin-roomie, Siobhan – that I featured in the latest episode.  My name is Palle Bo. Welcome back to all new episodes of The Radio Vagabond. This is Season 7, episode 206, and today we're going to St. Croix – one of the US Virgin Islands.  CRUISING IN A PANDEMIC This episode is recorded just a few days ago, as cruising is starting up again after the pandemic. And they are taking so many precautions for our safety. As we all know (from the beginning of the pandemic), a cruise ship is not the best place to be if there's a Coronavirus outbreak.  They require that all passengers are fully vaccinated, and on top of that, we all need to have a Covid test to board. Plus, they are sailing with less than half as many passengers as they have the capacity for.   Also, as I mentioned in the latest episode a few days ago, they changed the itinerary, and then at some ports, we're only allowed to leave the ship on port days if we go on one of their excursions.  Everything is to prevent any cases of Covid on the ship. So, we're probably relatively safe – and thank God (even though it could make this podcast go viral).  WELCOME TO SAINT CROIX As we set foot on land at the first stop on the cruise, we're greeted by local dancers, a DJ, and some guys on stilts. It's a special place for me as a Dane because the US Virgin Islands used to be a part of my home country, Denmark.  But let's start with seven facts about where we are: 1. YOU STILL SEE A BIT OF DENMARK HERE Up until March 1917, they were called the Danish West Indies, and still, there is a lot of Danish history here. Like location names. The street sign in Kings Street also has the Danish name Kongensgade. There's also a Kirkegade (Church Street). Today, I'm visiting Frederiksted and Christiansted – also very typical names for Danish kings. 2. A VERY BIG REAL ESTATE DEAL Denmark sold the islands for 25 million USD in gold (around 554 million USD in current money). Someone might call it "a very big real estate deal"...   3. THE CAPITAL IS NOT ON THE BIGGEST ISLAND St. Croix is the largest of the islands in the territory. But the capital, Charlotte Amalie, is located on St. Thomas.  4. THE LAST VIRGIN Most people know that there are three main US Virgin Islands, but not that many years ago, a fourth was added: tiny Water Island, located off the coast of St. Thomas. And it is tiny – less than one square mile (around two square kilometres), and the USA bought it for a cool $10,000, making it what locals playfully call "The Last Virgin."  5. HALF OF THE POPULATION IS ON SAINT CROIX The population of St. Croix is a bit more than 50,000 – almost half of the populations on the islands.  6. AN ISLAND WITH A LITTLE MOUNTAIN The highest point of St. Croix is Mount Eagle, at 355 meters (1,165 ft).  7. TWO CITIES GAVE IT THE NICKNAME St. Croix's nickname is "Twin City", for its two towns, Frederiksted on the western end (where we dock with the cruise) and the bigger, Christiansted, on the northeast part of the island (where I'm going later today). ONE COFFEE AND TWO CHATS, PLEASE I start my day in Frederiksted, before I go on a tour in Christiansted. I went to a coffee shop for some coffee and better Wi-Fi than what is available on the ship. After walking around the city, I ended up in a place called Polly's at the Pier. I got chatting with the owner, Susan.  She tells me that she's from Colorado and came here to the island looking for a warm place to retire. And then she ended up buying the coffee shop in the middle of the pandemic. In my conversation with her, she confirms that there is a thing called "island time" here, and you do get a bit of Island fever. But Susan likes it here and have no plans of leaving anytime soon. We're sitting in the courtyard behind the café with chickens running around us. And there's also a place where you can rent a bicycle. Here I meet Rebecca, who is she's born and raised here. Please have a listen to the episode to hear my conversation with these two women. Then you will also hear my alarm going off in the middle of the last chat – reminding me that it's time for me to get ready to go on the tour to Christiansted.  CHRISTIANSTED AND THE TEN-DOLLAR MAN At the beginning of the walking tour, our guide goes into a 2-minute statement given to her by Celebrity Cruises. They asked her to read it to us, and it's all about the things we need to know about how to act when going on a walking tour in Covid-times. And guess what? We need to wash our hands, maintain social distancing, and always wear a mask. You know all the same things we've been hearing 200 million times in the last 18 months… But good to know that they are taking it seriously. OUR HEAVENLY TOURGUIDE Our guide is a slightly older woman with the wonderful name Heavenly Petersen. Yes, her first name is really Heavenly, and the last name is Petersen – which is a unique Danish way of spelling it.  She confirms my suspicion that she has Danish ancestors, so I tell her that I'm from Denmark. And much to my surprise, I get no reaction. I was expecting a "wow, really" or "maybe we're related" or just a smile. But nothing. There was no reaction whatsoever – just a "good to meet you, sir" a few seconds later. So, I thought she might not have heard me, and I repeated myself: "My name is Palle, and I am from DENMARK". Again, nothing. I found it funny and slightly weird, and I still thought that she didn't hear it. But a bit later, I find out that she did. When we came to the entrance of the fort Christiansvern, there was a "Skillerhouse" outside. It's a little red human-size house that is uniquely Danish. It's where a soldier can stand in when it rains, and we have them outside the royal castle in Copenhagen, Amalienborg. And as I mention that to Heavenly, she shows me that she did hear that I was "the gentleman from Denmark". MY NAME IS ALEXANDER HAMILTON " How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished in squalor, grow up to be a hero and a scholar?" These are words from the famous Broadway musical about Alexander Hamilton, and he grew up right here on St. Croix and later became one of the founding fathers of the United States – and got his face is on the ten-dollar bill.  We walk inside fort Christiansvern and hear more about this man and his mother, Rachel Faucett Lavien, who spent time in a prison cell here.  STORY OF HAMILTON AND HIS MOTHER RACHEL Inside Hamilton's mother's prison cell, which they call Rachel's Room, Heavenly Petersen tells me that Rachel was sent in jail with a push from her, John Michael Lavien, for having "flirtatious ways". But it might have been just a bit more than flirting. While she was married to Lavien, she and another man, Cronenberg, were caught in a bedroom, undressed and (as it said in the court documents) "with more circumstances that sufficiently demonstrated their shameless intercourse and scandalous life."  So, this is why Lin-Manuel Miranda refers to Alexander Hamilton as a son of a whore in the hit musical.  Both Rachel and Cronenberg ended up in jail for several months for their adultery. Rachel 6 months here in Christiansvern. Once released, Cronenberg was booted off the island and later showed up in St. Thomas. Rachel had to promise that she would go back to her husband and be very nice to him and do everything he told her to do. But she tricked him and left the island to go back to Nevis, another Caribbean Island in Saint Kitts and Nevis. Here she met Scotsman, James Hamilton, and they had two sons when she still was married to Lavien: James Hamilton Jr and one they named Alexander. Lavien asked for a divorce in 1759 when James Jr was six and Alexander was two years old – or maybe four – it's a bit uncertain when exactly he was born.  When James Hamilton Sr. heard about her real husband asking for a divorce, he abandoned her. She was alone back here in Christiansted on St. Croix with the two boys, where she supported them by keeping a small store – now knowns as the Hamilton House. But not for long. She contracted yellow fever and died on February 19, 1768, leaving Alexander orphaned at 13 (or 11). NOT THROWING AWAY MY SHOT So, how does this bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman become one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and the ten-dollar face?  "He got a lot farther by working a lot harder. By being a lot smarter. By being a self-starter. And by fourteen, they placed him in charge of a trading charter. " Despite only being in his teenage years, he proved capable enough as a trader to be left in charge of the firm for five months while the owner was at sea. He was also an avid reader and later also a writer. He began to desire a life outside St. Croix.  So, he was not throwing away his shots.  For the rest of the history, go see the Hamilton musical on Broadway in New York… If you can get tickets. Tribute to Shasta Serval 4/16/91 - 10/30/10 Arrived at Big Cat Rescue 6/27/97 Shasta arrived at Big Cat Rescue with Peaches and Alpha. She had been retired from breeding. She had an amazing metabolism and could eat as much as a cougar without gaining weight. She was discovered to have a rare form of Discoid Lupus for which she received medication the rest of her life. Though Shasta was up in years, she still found the energy to be quite playful. She would take an enrichment tube and bat it around, stirring up leaves and pine needles in a frenzy to keep up with it. October 2010 - Shasta had not been eating well, so we took her in to see Dr. Wynn. After 2 hours of surgery, an inoperable cancerous tumor was found. At 18 years of age, we decided the only option was to help her slip into that next realm while still under anesthesia. Thank you everyone who made her life in a cage bearable and for all of you who are working hard to end the trade in exotic cats. September is my favorite month for planting trees, shrubs, and perennials.  The cool air makes outdoor exercise a joy and the ground temperatures add the perfect amount of warmth for plants to get established.  Planting in the fall is preferred because it's the time of year when perennials experience less transplant shock. At the same time, there is still sufficient time for plants to establish their roots in the garden in time for winter. After their season of dormancy, when the ground warms again, fall-planted perennials grow and bloom more vigorously than if they were planted in the spring. Bottomline: Now is NOT the time to stop planting. It's the perfect time to get your dig on.     Brevities #OTD Today is the anniversary of the death of the botanist Jean-Baptiste Van Mons who died on this day in 1842.   The name of the game for Mons was selective breeding for pears. Selective breeding happens when humans breed plants to develop particular characteristic by choosing the parent plants to make the offspring.   Check out the patience and fortitude that was required as Mon's described his work:   “I have found this art to consist in regenerating in a direct line of descent, and as rapidly as possible an improving variety, taking care that there be no interval between the generations. To sow, to re-sow, to sow again, to sow perpetually, in short to do nothing but sow, is the practice to be pursued, and which cannot be departed from; and in short this is the whole secret of the art I have employed.”   Jean-Baptiste Van Mons produced a tremendous amount of new pear cultivars in his breeding program - something north of forty incredible species over the course of his lifetime. The Bosc and D'Anjou pears, we know today, are his legacy.      #OTD Today is the anniversary of the day in 1847 when Henry David Thoreau left Walden Pond and moved in with Ralph Waldo Emerson in Concord, Massachusetts. His two years of simple living at Walden Pond were over.    #OTD  Today is the anniversary of the death of James Veitch Jr. who died on this day in 1869. Veitch was born into the famous family nursery business known the world over as Veitch Nurseries. His grandfather, John, had started the business. After growing up and learning the business from his father and grandfather, Veitch went to London to train with other nurserymen.    After he quickly became a partner in the nursery, he married Harriott Gould. In addition to being a wonderful plantsman himself, James Jr. was an exceptionally bright businessman. He acquired a nursery called the Royal Exotic Nursery in London to ensure the Veitch Nursery stayed competitive and he turned Royal Exotic into the largest specialty nursery in Europe.  James Veitch Jr created the RHS Fruit and Floral Committees which still exist today. His love of the plants and the business were carried on in his three sons. The oldest, John Gould Veitch, was one of the first plant hunters to visit Japan. The second son, Harry James, oversaw the business during a period of peak growth. The third son, Arthur, worked with Harry to send Plant Explorers on missions all over the globe.    Of the brothers, it was the middle son, Harry, who outlived them both.  His older brother John Gould died young at age 31 from tuberculosis. Harry outlived his younger brother, Arthur, who died young as well - he died after a short illness when he was just 36 years old. #OTD  Today is the birthday of the Belgian botanist and dendrologist Joseph Hers who was born on this day in 1884. Dendrology is the science and study of wooded plants, like trees and shrubs, and their taxonomic classifications.   Hers made his first trip to China in 1905; he was an interpreter for the Belgium ministry. He later founded organizations to promote good relations between China and Belgium.   Later, Hers spent five years collecting in the north-central provinces of China from 1919-1924. The Arnold Arboretum had hired him to collect for them. As a dendrologist, Hers was especially focused on trees. The rapid rate of deforestation in China was especially alarming to Hers. Among Hers discoveries was the snakebark maple Acer tegmentosum.       #OTD   Today is the birthday of the British Botanist Kathleen Basford who was born on this day in 1916. As a young girl, Basford's nanny, Winny, taught her about the natural world; she learned to identify wildflower and trees. In the 1940's, Basford had three children of her own. She began gardening. When she wasn't with the children, she started breeding orchids. She became so interested in botany, she took evening classes on the subject. By the early 1950's, Basford published a paper on a fuchsia she discovered. It proved that the fuchsia had existed 20-30 million years ago - before the break-up of the continents. Her paper caught the attention of the chair of the botany department at Manchester University; a geneticist named Sydney Harland. He offered Basford a job on the spot. Later in life, Basford also wrote a book called "The Green Man." Before her book, this topic was largely unknown to the world. The Green Man, is a mythical figure - portrayed as a man with a head that sprouts leaves. It is a relic of the middle ages.      Unearthed Words "It's designed to break your heart.  The game begins in the spring, when everything is new again,  and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings,  and then as soon as the chill rains comes,  it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone." - Bartlett Giamatti Today's book recommendation Montrose by Nancy Goodwin   This is a book that was released in 2005 and it's still one of my favorites. Nancy Goodwin and her husband, Craufurd, searched for 10 years before finding a 61-acre property in 1977. The place had been in the Graham family for three generations. They had named it Montrose in honor of their Scottish ancestry. This book is the story of how the Goodwins transformed the property; it's a beautiful biography of the many gardens of Montrose.   You can get used copies of this treasure on Amazon for $4 using the link in today's show notes.       Today's Garden Chore If you live in a cold climate, late fall is a wonderful time to sow flower seeds in your garden. Sweet Alyssum, Bee Balm, Coreopsis, Delphinium, Lady’s Mantle, Penstemon, and Sweet Pea are just a handful of the flowers you can sow in your fall garden. Additionally, many annuals, like cosmos, nigella, and cleome, will seed themselves after a summer in your garden.  If any seeds germinate in places where you don't want them, it's pretty easy to remove them in the spring or early summer.     Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart I was researching a family tree on Ancestry recently, and I came across this little notice in The Mower County Transcriptout of Lansing Minnesota from this in 1893.   Here's what it said:   "The parties who recently took flowers from the garden of Mrs. M. E. The Bloody Benders From 1871 to 1873, Labette County in Kansas was home to a family called the Benders. John Bender Sr., or “Pa Bender” was around 60 years old at the time. He was of German descent and spoke little English, if any at all. His wife, Elvira was 55 and was known as the “she-devil” by her neighbors because She was very cold and unfriendly. Their 25 year old son, John Jr., was considered handsome with his auburn hair. He spoke English fluently but with a German accent, but neighbors considered him a “half-wit” since he would often be seen laughing all by himself. 3. The Wessons Born August 22, 1946, Marcus Wesson, was the eldest of four children. He grew up in a dysfunctional household with his mother being a religious fanatic and his dad an abusive alcoholic. He joined the Army after leaving high school and was stationed in Europe for some time. After returning, Wesson started living together with a married woman named, Rosemary Maytorena and her children, in San Jose, California. 2. The Briley Brothers It was 1979 when brothers, Linwood, James Jr., and Anthony Briley terrorized the town of Richmond, Virginia when they went on a random killing spree for seven months. Growing up, the boys were known to always be willing to lend a helping hand and were polite and helpful in their community. However, their classmates had a a bit of a different opinion because In school, they were bullies. They didn’t even care when authority figures punished them. The only person the boys feared seemed to be their father, James Sr. But by the time they had become teenagers, their parents separated amicably and even James Sr. began fearing his children. He realized Linwood, the eldest, was having a huge influence on the boys and James Sr., began locking his doors at night with a deadbolt in fear of what they might do. 1. The Tarverdiyeva Family Dubbed as the “Gang of Amazons,” the Tarverdiyeva family from the North Caucasian Federal District in Russia is considered to be one of the most baffling and murderous serial killer families in modern times. Captured in 2013, the family is composed of the father, Roman Podkopaev who was (35), his 46 year old wife, Inessa Inessa’s 25 year old daughter from her first marriage, Viktoria and Inessa and Roman’s daughter, Anastasiya who was (13). Other accomplices included Sergei Sinelnik, Roman’s police officer brother-in-law and his wife, Anastasiya. The family came from a well-to do background but it seems this didn’t help in quenching their lust for blood. As a cover for their crimes, the family would go under the pretense of conducting out of town camping trips. Their first victim was, Mikhail Zlydnev, and his wife on February 17, 2008. Mikhail was the head of the State Drug Control Service. The couple was shot inside their homes and then stabbed multiple times with a knife. Several items in their home were taken and Months later, another couple was shot on a highway. So there were 4 Scary & Mysterious Families Serial killer families are rare but they do exist. Aside from these four, throughout history they’ve been recorded and it’s likely, there are many more out there we’ve yet to hear about.

Ace Chemicals is the birthplace of The Joker and for us the true birth of Batman. These two engage in a dance of death and destruction and it all started here. Penguin is looking for a way to escape with the help of Selina and Riddler. Jim is caught in an awkward triangle with Lee and Barbara. Ace Chemicals - Birth of the Bat and Joker: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Giovanni Rufino/FOX Jeremiah has done all in his considerable power to recreate the most pivotal day in Bruce Wayne's life. He has had two people given plastic surgery to look like dear old mom and pop Wayne. With the hypnotic help of the Mad Hatter, Jervis Tetch, both the Wayne stand in's and Alfred are under control. Jeremiah plasters the newspapers of the Wayne death around the city and has the stand in's lure Bruce through the tunnel to Wayne Manor. Bruce is blown away to see two people who look like his parents and Alfred all acting like the murder never happened. But Jeremiah is the guest of honor at the party. Bruce must play the game or the Manor goes boom with all of them in it. After an awkward dinner in the kitchen, it is time to head back to the city. Bruce barely gets Alfred out in time. Wayne Manor is blown up and the tunnel is sealed, but the blast broke Alfred out of the Hatter's trance. Bruce tracks Jeremiah to a movie theater where and updated version of "The Mark of Zorro" is playing. Jeremiah has re-created the movie that frightened young Bruce and forced the Waynes to leave. Out in Crime Alley, Jeremiah is waiting. On one side of the alley is Ecco with a truck full of toxin filled fireworks and on the other Jeremiah and the Waynes. But surprise, it is a hypnotized Jim and Lee. They were tracking down things and fell in to the trap Ecco and the Hatter had for them.  Now Jeremiah reveals that he wants to be a part of Bruce's life and killing Bruce's father figure of Jim and friend Lee will do that. Jeremiah is about to shoot Lee, when Selina whips the gun out of his hand. She wakes Jim and Lee and Ecco starts the timer on the fireworks. Jim sends Bruce after Jeremiah and drives the truck into Gotham Harbor. Bruce chases Jeremiah into Ace Chemicals. Bruce says it ends tonight, but Jeremiah says it begins. They struggle and fight along the catwalk. Jeremiah echos speeches made by several other versions of the Joker. He says that Bruce, without Jeremiah, is like a joke without a punchline. Bruce gets the upper hand and over the railing goes Jeremiah. Later we find that Jeremiah survived. He is badly scarred and is braindead. But this is Gotham and we know the true Joker has not risen, yet! Penguin Is No Ace Escape Artist: Penguin has all the wealth he needs to succeed on the mainland, but he and Selina cannot find a way out of Gotham. The government has mined Gotham Harbor and they cannot get out by air. Selina is playing along with Penguin's game for the wealth, but she is smart. She goes to Barbara to fill her in on the plan. Once a way out is found they will off Penguin, for killing Tabitha, and take all the wealth for themselves. Selina takes Penguin to the tunnel Jeremiah and his crew were digging, but their hopes are dashed when a battered Alfred emerges. The tunnel is closed off by the rubble of Wayne Manor. Selina is about to off Oswald, but Alfred's appeal to help Bruce spares his life. Penguin turns to his frenemy, Edward. The two agree to set their differences aside to escape the city. When they arrive back at City Hall, Barbara is there waiting. She has checked out Selina's story and found the treasure. Since Selina didn't end Oswald, she will. The every observant Riddler detects that Barbara is glowing. His announcement about her pregnancy throws her off. She cannot kill Oswald. Our Penguin, ever the opportunist, steps up and draws her in to their plan to escape. In a nod to the 60's movie, it will be via submarine. It can navigate the harbor and avoid the mines. There is one minor issue, they have to build it. Babs says to call her when it is done.   Becoming an Ace at Navigating Relationships: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Giovanni Rufino/FOX Jim is renewing his love with Lee while trying to do right by Babs, his baby mamma. Jim is a man driven by purpose and his love for Lee has never stopped. Yet he is a man of justice and responsibility and knows he has to do right by his child with Barbara. She clearly saw this child as a way to find stability and peace with Jim. But her hopes have been dashed and her hormones are taking sway. She says she doesn't want Jim involved, but that is a front. How will this triangle work out by the end of the season? I'm saying that Barbara will sacrifice herself for the safety of the child and Jim. Jim and Lee will raise the child and name it Barbara in her memory. But we could also argue that it would be better suited to be James Jr. who has a spark of his mother's craziness. Selina has saved Bruce's life by stepping in where she once did nothing. The two bond over the seeming win over Jeremiah. It is a tender moment and all to fleeting in this dark city. The Bat and Cat have a long road in front of them, but it is moments like this that bond them and keep them coming back to each other. Closing Thoughts: Ace Chemicals was written by Tze Chun, executive story editor of Gotham, and it shows. We have a twisted retelling of Bruce's origin story by a twisted character. Jeremiah is obsessed with being a part of Bruce's journey and if he cannot do it by brotherhood, he will do it by becoming an arch nemesis. The way that Jeremiah digs at Bruce's emotions and the people he cares about is masterful. Yet he does not count on Selina, the one who was there from the beginning. Here in this episode we see how far our characters have come since the beginning and also how far they have to go. I am so happy we have great writers like Tze on the series to craft it. Props to John Stephens who took the script and set it to motion. The visuals in Gotham are always striking but two scenes stuck out to me. The first being the final battle in Ace Chemicals. The green of the vats being a visual representation of Jeremiah's envy of wanting to be a part of Bruce's life. The second being the GCPD at the end of the episode. The set has been church like from the beginning with the lights, windows and pulpit like balconies. We have Jim in the Church of Law and Justice struggling on how to deal with this love triangle and we end with he and Lee kissing as the light streams around them. It is masterful. News: Nothing's Shocking Bullock’s past comes back to haunt him when he and Gordon investigate two murders at Sirens. Meanwhile, Bruce and Alfred explore the tunnels beneath the city, and Penguin and Nygma’s plans to escape are thwarted by the least likely of suspects in the all-new “Nothing’s Shocking” episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Feb. 28 (8:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Dr. Funkenstein, a.k.a, Star Child: Singer, songwriter, bandleader, and record producer.    Born in Kannapolis, NC, he grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey. Clinton became interested in doo wop during the early ’50s. Basing his group on Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, Clinton formed The Parliaments in 1955, rehearsing in the back room of a Plainfield barbershop where he straightened hair. The Parliaments released only two singles during the next ten years, but frequent trips to Detroit during the mid-’60s – where Clinton began working as a songwriter and producer – eventually paid off their investment. The Parliaments finally had a hit with the 1967 single “(I Wanna) Testify”. But his label ran out of money and George refused to record any new material. When the label was bought out by Atlantic, Clinton decided to abandon the Parliaments name rather than record for the major label and record the same band under a new name: Funkadelic. (In 1970 he regained the rights to The Parliaments name) Inspired by Motown ‘s assembly line of sound, He gradually put together a collective of over 50 musicians and recorded during the ’70s both as Parliament and Funkadelic. While Funkadelic pursued band-format psychedelic rock, Parliament engaged in a funk free-for-all, blending influences from the godfathers (James Brown and Sly Stone) with freaky costumes and themes inspired by ’60s acid culture and science fiction. He is regarded, along with James Brown and Sly Stone, as one of the foremost innovators of funk music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, alongside 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic.   Key Artist   Kool & the Gang, "Best Band Ever!?!?"   Formed in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1964 by brothers Robert "Kool" Bell and Ronald Bell. They have explored many musical styles: jazz, soul, funk, rock, and pop music. After three albums, the band had commercial success with Wild and Peaceful (1973) which contained the US top ten singles "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging". They reached a commercial peak between 1979 and 1986 following their partnership with Brazilian musician Eumir Deodato and the addition of singer James "J.T." Taylor to the line-up. Their most successful albums of this period include Ladies' Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980), and Emergency (1984), and the hit singles "Ladies' Night", "Celebration", "Get Down on It", "Joanna", and "Cherish". The band continues to perform to this day.   Open Comments:   Question: What makes a track funky?   Movie Scene - Royal Black Hollywood Strikes Back   Both movies were deliberate attempts to counter the Blaxploitation movement.   Claudine - "The Poverty Technician" (Plot)   The film tells the story of Claudine Price (Diahann Carroll), a single Black Harlem mother, living on welfare with six children, who finds love with a garbage collector, Rupert Marshall (James Earl Jones), whom she calls "Roop". The pair's relationship becomes complicated because of several factors. Among these are that the couple do not want to marry because they would not be able to support the children without welfare, and that the kids themselves, particularly eldest son Charles (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs), are apprehensive of Rupert, and believe that he will leave their mother just like her previous husbands had. Claudine and Rupert meet while both are at work. Rupert asks Claudine out on a date with him and Claudine accepts. When Rupert becomes invited inside Claudine's apartment, the children are rude and vulgar towards Rupert. This is also the first time the audience meets the children and sees the inside of Claudine's slum-like apartment. Later, in the film, the audience finds out that Claudine receives financial aid from the government through the welfare program. Throughout the film, Miss Kabak, the social worker, visits Claudine at her home and asks her if she is employed and if she is dating anyone. Claudine always denies Miss Kabak the truth and lies to her about being unemployed and single. If Claudine tells the truth and says that she is employed, the amount of financial aid she receives from the welfare program would decrease or she could also no longer receive any more financial aid. If Claudine dates anyone and receives gifts from her boyfriend, the social worker must deduct any money or gifts Claudine is receiving from whomever she is dating. Just before he is to announce his engagement to Claudine to the kids, Rupert is served papers for a court order relating to underpayment of child support of his own children; his work wages are garnished to pay the difference. Rupert becomes so upset about this that he disappears for a couple of days and loses contact with everyone. He moves out of his apartment, does not show up to work, and does not show up to the Father's Day celebration the children had prepared for him. Charles eventually finds him drunk at a bar and angrily confronts him. Charles is angry at Rupert because he left his mother without any explanation. Out of the anger Charles felt for Rupert, he engages in a physical fight with him. After the incident at the bar, Rupert eventually shows up outside of Claudine's apartment and speaks to her. After some time, the couple talk things over and make up. After several hardships and debating over whether they should marry because of financial issues relating to welfare, the couple decide to marry. They hold a wedding ceremony, but it is interrupted when Charles runs inside the apartment in the middle of the ceremony while the police are chasing after him. The couple and the rest of the children run after Charles, leave the ceremony, and board the police wagon. The film ends on a cheery note with the entire family, along with Rupert, walking happily hand in hand through the neighborhood.   Question: Should welfare be (a) reformed or (b) avoided? What would a or b look like?   Conclusion: Regardless of the message, Gladys' music was on hit (3rd #1 R&B LP) and Diahann Carroll was great, she was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards in 1975.   Uptown Saturday Night - "The Good Guys (Sidney & Bill) Get Over" (Plot)   While enjoying themselves at Madame Zenobia's club on Saturday Night, Steve Jackson (Poitier) and Wardell Franklin (Cosby) are held up by robbers who raid the club, taking Steve's wallet as a result. Upon realizing that a winning lottery ticket worth $50,000 is in the wallet, they set out to find the crooks themselves. Determined to retrieve the ticket, they search for it using the help of gangster Geechie Dan Beauford (Belafonte), who wants to defeat his rival Silky Slim (Lockhart). Using their wit, perseverance, and fearlessness, Steve and Wardell devise a plan to get the ticket using the help of both gangsters, in the hopes that it will pay off for them.   Question: Is this truly anti-Blaxploitation or just another version?   Television Scene - A Tale of 2 Black Families   That's My Mama, "Warm and Fuzzy" (1 season, 1974-75) (Plot)   Set in a middle-class African American neighborhood in Washington, D.C., the program revolved around the character Clifton Curtis (played by Clifton Davis), a man in his mid-20s who worked as a barber at Oscar's Barber Shop, the family barber shop he had inherited from his late father. While Clifton enjoyed being a bachelor, his loving, but tart-tongued and opinionated mother Eloise "Mama" Curtis, played by Theresa Merritt, wanted him to settle down and find a nice wife. Additional characters – such as Clifton's two best friends—Earl, played by Teddy Wilson, an easy-going mailman and Junior, played by Ted Lange, a suave and good-humored ladies' man—came and went over the course of a typical day at Oscar's Barber Shop. Other characters included Tracy, Clifton's little sister, played by Lynne Moody and later by Joan Pringle and her husband, Leonard, played by Lisle Wilson, as well as local seniors Josh and Wildcat, played by DeForest Covan and Jester Hairston. Clifton Davis and Hairston would work together again years later in the hit sitcom, Amen.   Conclusion: Never a ratings success.   Good Times, "Classic" (6 seasons, 1974-1979) (Plot)   Florida and James Evans live in a Chicago housing project and have three children: James Jr., also known as "J.J."; Thelma; and Michael, called "the militant midget" by his father due to his passionate activism. When the series begins, J.J. is seventeen years old, Thelma is sixteen, and Michael is eleven. Their exuberant neighbor, and Florida's best friend, is Willona Woods, a recent divorcée who works at a boutique. Their building superintendent is Nathan Bookman. The characters originated on the sitcom Maude. Episodes deal with the characters' attempts to overcome poverty. GT was intended to be a good show for Esther Rolle and John Amos. Both expected the show to deal with serious topics in a comedic way while providing positive characters. However, J.J. became the breakout character.  As a result, the writers focused more on J.J.'s comedic antics instead of serious issues. Through seasons two and three, Rolle and Amos grew increasingly disillusioned with the direction of the show. Rolle was vocal about it: "He's 18 and he doesn't work. He can't read or write. He doesn't think. The show didn't start out to be that...Little by little—with the help of the artist, I suppose, because they couldn't do that to me—they have made J.J. more stupid and enlarged the role. Negative images have been slipped in on us through the character of the oldest child." Jimmie Walker was the only cast member to not show at Rolle's funeral. Amos also spoke out: "The writers would prefer to put a chicken hat on J.J. and have him prance around saying "DY-NO-MITE", and that way they could waste a few minutes and not have to write meaningful dialogue." Amos was ultimately fired after just 3 seasons.   [Audio Clip]   Open Comments:   Question: Did/do you know anyone in real life like J.J.?   Conclusion: They didn't recast James Evans, they just killed him off and Esther was playing a single mom after all. She quit after season 4.   Vote, Biggest Impact for 1974:

Former NASCAR Scene writer Steve Waid joins the show to discuss the life and career of NASCAR driver James Hylton.  Hylton and his son, James Jr passed away last week in an automobile accident on the way home from the ARCA race in Talladega, Alabama.  Waid had a long career of covering the sport and remembers when Hylton was a regular competitor on the Cup Series circuit. We'll dive into the life of the independent drivers of the 1970s and talk about the kind of person James Hylton was on and off the track.  It's an exciting interview and we look forward to you listening! 

We're previewing the GEICO 500 from Talladega Superspeedway. Joey Logano took the victory for his first win of the 2018 season and the 19th of his career. Logano held off Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott and others in route to the victory.  Plus there were two major accidents that happened. One was caused when Jimmie Johnson lost control of his No. 48 Chevrolet, trigging a multi-car wreck and the other when Erik Jones spun and crashed. We'll talk about the package the Superspeedway event and who ran good and who struggled.  Also, we'll talk about the life and career of James Harvey Hylton, one of NASCAR's oldest independent drivers. Hylton and his team were traveling home from the ARCA race at Talladega Superspeedway when they had an accident on the way home. Driver of the vehicle, Terry Strange survived but Hylton and son James Jr passed away. It was a tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the Hylton family.  We'll also take your phone calls at 917-889-8280! 

James Byrd Jr. was born on May 2, 1949, in Beaumont, Texas, the third of eight children born to Stella and James Byrd Sr. Growing up in Jasper, a small bedroom community in East Texas, his family's life revolved around the Greater New Bethel Baptist Church, where Mrs. Byrd taught Sunday School, her husband was a deacon and James Jr. enjoyed singing hymns and playing piano. Byrd graduated with the last racially segregated class at Jasper's Rowe High School in 1967.  Walking home from his parents’ house in the early morning hours of June 7, 1998, 49-year-old James accepted a ride home from three white men: Shawn Allen Berry, Lawrence Russell Brewer and John William King. Byrd got in the bed of their pickup truck, but instead of taking him home, they drove him to a desolate area east of town, beat him severely, chained him to the back of the truck by his ankles and dragged him for more than three miles along an asphalt road.  This case would change death row "special" meals in Texas forever.

Stand near the Tuskegee Airmen exhibit in the World War II Gallery. General Daniel “Chappie” James Jr. was born on Feb. 11, 1920, in Pensacola, Florida, where he graduated from Washington High School in June 1937. He attended Tuskegee Institute at Tuskegee, Alabama, from September 1937 to March 1942, where he received a bachelor’s degree in physical education and completed civilian pilot training under the government-sponsored Civilian Pilot Training Program. He remained at Tuskegee as a civilian instructor pilot in the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program until January 1943, when he entered the program as a cadet and received his commission as second lieutenant in July 1943. General James – who served in World War II, the Korean War and the Southeast Asia War – summed up his thoughts as his role as an American serviceman: “I’ve fought in three wars and three more wouldn’t be too many to defend my country. I love America and as she has weaknesses or ills, I’ll hold her hand.” He was promoted to four-star general on Sept. 1, 1975, becoming the first USAF African-American to hold the highest Air Force rank. He retired from active service on Feb. 1, 1978, and died later that month on February 25.
