Standing for Collective Liberation “No one will be free if the others live under occupation. No one will be safe unless everyone is safe.” In this live SAND Community Gathering (November 2024) Zaya and Maurizio were in discussion with Palestinian and Israeli peace activists Osama lliwat & Rotem Levin who share their personal stories, describe the reality on the ground, and explain their vision for a path toward collective liberation. Osama lliwat was born in Jerusalem and grew up in Jericho, after his family was displaced in 1967. In the peace world for more than 15 years and the co-founder of Visit Palestine, he has dedicated his life to nonviolent resistance. He has worked with the Sulha Peace Project and Interfaith Encounter Association, appeared in several documentaries including Objector and The Other, and speaks regularly on peacebuilding at organizations and universities around the world. Rotem Levin was born and raised in Ein Vered. After his military service, he participated in a transformational intensive dialogue program in Germany, where he got to know Palestinians on a personal and intimate level. This instigated a change in perspective on the story he was born and raised with. After this experience, he started organizing similar programs in Aqaba, Jordan, where he offered the experience to other post-military Israelis and to Palestinian and Israeli medical workers. He is a committed activist and doctor by profession. Toronto Acoustic-Punk rockers, Public Messdeliver a 5-song EP that defines the genre.  “Too Many Ghosts”, the debut EP from Toronto's newest group, Public Mess, features Cactus Vella on Acoustic Guitar and Vocals, Rob Fiasco on Acoustic Bass, and Andrew Heule on Drums.  Public Mess blends acoustic-punk with hints of alt-country. Their debut EP was recorded at Sandy Pockets Studio. A DIY recording studio located in the garage of Vella's cottage. Mastered by Jon Drew, and released on Anxiety Attack Recordings, “Too Many Ghosts” clocks in at just under 18-minutes long and leaves you wanting more. The EP also features a cover of “Objector” by the legendary Blundermen. A Toronto-based punk band from the early 1990's.  The songs on “Too Many Ghosts” deal with topics such as Life and death, as in the case with the opening track "They Bring Me Woes", as well as "Never Get Sober", a song Vella wrote about an old friend and former bandmate who passed away last year. On "The Tide", Cactus sings about living fast, being left for dead, and just barely surviving. The EP closes with "Leaving Parkdale". A love letter to their favorite neighborhood in Toronto. At one point all 3 band members lived in the south-west Toronto neighborhood. These days, only Robstill remains there. Cactus Vella has been playing in the Southern Ontario music scene since the mid 90's, both in bands, as well as a solo musician. He's recorded and toured with such bands as Sinkin' Ships, The Class Assassins, Plan 37, and Whiskey Hearts, to name a few. Cactus, and his label Anxiety Attack Recordings also brought us the acoustic tribute to Rancid from a few couple of years ago. Rob Fiasco, attended high school with Cactus, and the two friends have always wanted to play in a band together. Rob has also been at it for years with bands like Blank Stare, The Donnellys, and currently also playing with indie rockers Centraal. Andrew Huele, who taught himself to play drums as a kid from a VHS tape, also plays in Stillwaves, as well as creates psychedelic electronic music under the moniker Howlin' Heule.  “Too Many Ghosts” will be available on all streaming services on Monday July 31st. As well, a limited run of cassette tapes will be available.  Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/public_mess YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@PublicMess This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop Go get the 1 hour mini Documentary on Lowest of the Low's Classic Album Shakespeare my Butt at https://thelowdoc.gumroad.com/l/SMB

This passage in the book of James is often misunderstood and has caused a lot of confusion in Christianity and in the presentation of the Gospel. Paul makes it clear that we're saved by faith apart from works but then James comes along and says, seemingly, the exact opposite! How do we square this circle? This teaching shows that we AREN'T supposed to try to fit James in to Paul or Paul in to James because they're talking about two TOTALLY different aspects of the Christian life.  Follow my ministry with InFaith by going to:https://www.facebook.com/DennisInFaithIf you have any questions or comments that you'd like me to address you can shoot me an email to dennissutherby@infaith.orgAnd if you'd like to support my ministry with InFaith you can text the word "discipleship" to 41444 or head over to https://infaith.org/dennis-sutherby and give there. Old times’’ (1971), ‘’No man’s land’’ (1974), o ‘’Betrayal’’ (1978).

Prodding Class Action Attorneys to Deliver More for Consumers

What happens when a Subway foot-long sandwich is only 11 inches long? There’s a class action lawsuit for that. In recent years, high-profile class action settlements have been criticized for delivering little to no monetary relief to plaintiffs — instead, providing coupons, injunctive relief or “cy pres” relief in which the defendant makes charitable donations — while making large fee awards to attorneys. On the latest episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast — sponsored by Reich and Tang Deposit Solutions — class action expert Ted Frank discusses recent trends in class litigation. As founder of the Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute and its Center for Class Action Fairness, Frank discusses his efforts to object to settlements that deliver insufficiently for consumers — and how these efforts have helped to reduce frivolous lawsuits by making it harder for plaintiffs attorneys to get big fee awards. He also discusses the value of arbitration for consumers compared to class actions, as well as the role of shareholder strike suits in mergers and acquisitions.

In this episode, we're speak with two Israeli activists and refuseniks Amitai Ben- Abba (@amitaibenabba) and Atalya Ben-Abba about the current uprising happening against the Netanyahu government and the movement refusing service in the Israeli army in protest of the occupation. The anti-Netanyahu movement, or the “Balfour struggle,” as it's known in Israel, has been out in the streets across the country and in front of “Crime Minister” Benjamin Netanyahu's homes for months. The Israeli left has not only begun to see large numbers of people joining them and increased police violence against protestors, but also a convergence of anti-austerity movements, the anti-occupation movement and people fed up with the government's corruption and bungling of the COVID-19 crisis. We also talk with Atalya and Amitai about the film “Objector” (@objectorfilm) which documents Atalya's decision to refuse service in the Israeli army, the “refusenik” movement of young Israelis resisting military service and their family's transformation as a result. Atalya Ben-Abba is an Israeli conscientious objector who sat in prison for 110 days in 2017 for refusing to serve in the Israeli army. After volunteering to do civil service for two years at a shelter for homeless youth, she now studies Sociology, Anthropology, and Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and continues to be active in various activist groups in Israel/Palestine. Amitai Ben-Abba is a writer, filmmaker, and activist now based in Oakland, CA. Amitai is the writer and producer of the full-length documentary Objector about Atalya's refusal and their family's transformation as a result of her decision. Amitai's poetry, fiction, and essays received awards and appeared in publications such as CounterPunch, Haaretz, The Independent, and Witness Magazine. Amitai holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College, where they attended as a Fellow in Writing and Community Engagement. Objector (@ObjectorFilm) premiered at IDFA in 2019 (where it was a Top 5 Audience Favorite) and won awards at major film festivals, including Best International Documentary at the Hot Springs Festival and Best Interfaith Film at St. Louis International Film Festival. In Episode 1, we heard from a surprising proponent of class action lawsuits. Now we hear from the other side, as prominent (and enigmatic) public interest objector Ted Frank (https://hlli.org/ted-frank/) joins the show. Proving why the New York Times called him the “leading critic of abusing class-action settlements” in the country, Ted pulls no punches. He argues that many settlements are rigged in favor of attorneys and explains why he thinks plaintiff’s lawyers could be targeted with antitrust lawsuits or (gasp) even malpractice class actions in the future. Ted also talks about how he chooses his cases, why he is rarely worried about what happens in the trial courts, and why he thinks one of his objections (maybe even Equifax) might soon end up in the Supreme Court. And for dessert, Jay plays a part of his firm’s new rap song -- https://youtu.be/paPmaUUhJ8I -- which gives a shout out to Ted.
