Dr. Justin Haegele (Twitter: @Justin_Haegele) joins Dr. Kevin Richards for an episode of Going Behind the Research. This talk focuses on the article below: Haegele, J. A., Ball, L. E., Zhu, X., Keene, M. A., & Nowland, L. A. (2022). Absent, Incapable, and “Normal”: Understanding the Inclusiveness of Visually Impaired Students' Experiences in Integrated Physical Education. Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, 1(aop), 1-22. Rather than providing a forum to discuss research that is conducted in health and physical education, the Going Behind the Research segment focuses on telling the stories that surround research we read in scholarly journals. Globally, the segment aims to humanize research by providing a forum to discuss the movies that draw researchers toward particular topics and studies, challenges and successes experienced along the way, and lessons learned that transcend individual journal publications (e.g., lessons learn that impact future research decisions). Each episode will feature an interview with one or member members of an authorship team. Including a brief overview of the study, the common interview guide (linked below) will be used to facilitate each individual conversation. The conversations will, however, be unique in that follow-up questions will address topics raised by each interviewee. The other article discussed is: Peers, D., Spencer-Cavaliere, N., & Eales, L. (2014). Say what you mean: Rethinking disability language in Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly. Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, 31(3), 265-282. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pwrhpe/support

Wine for Normal People

As the climate has changed, winegrowers have initiated the hunt for places where natural acidity and lightness can shine in the glass. Warmer years mean we can't always rely on our standbys -- Sancerre, Chablis, Chinon, and other wines from northern climes -- to have a balance of lighter alcohol and excellent acidity. People are seeking answers in many places -- some add artificial acidity or use technology for balance, some seek higher altitudes, and some higher latitudes. In this show we deal with the latter.    Map: Mikael Bodlore-Penlaez, CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons (notice the Pays Nantais, part of Loire Wine Region, in the lower right...)   Following a prologue from me about the wines of Scandinavia, which is, in fact, a thing, journalist Barnaby Eales of show 327 (EU Ingredient Labeling) joins again to discuss his latest article from Meininger's Wine Business International "Cool Breizh", about the new trend towards winegrowing in the northwestern area of Brittany, France.   Frankly, my introduction and our conversation are a bit surreal to think about, but this is the new reality and we need to be open to what is coming next as traditional regions warm and we seek to maintain food friendly, balanced wines in our fridges. In my intro, I discuss wines mainly of Scania, Sweden and I mention the PDO of Dons, Denmark, the EU's northernmost protected wine region. I discuss the grapes that are popular in both places: Reds: Rondo, Regent and Léon Millot (all three are hybrids) with Pinot Noir and others Whites: Solaris (a hybrid developed from Riesling) for acidity and sweetness with Pinot Gris and Auxerrois Blanc for sparkling wines   Barnaby and I discuss: The background on his story, what is happening in Brittany, and why now   The terroir and which grapes are best suited to the area (hybrids for organics, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Chenin Blanc for vitis vinifera) Some of the arcane laws that stopped Brittany from producing wine, even though it was capable of making great bottles 20 years ago. In addition, we discuss the very odd relationship Brittany has with the Loire (the Pays Nantais is really part of Brittany but was re-allocated under the Vichy fascist regime...it still stands today).    The people who are trying to develop vineyards in Brittany -- they are from Provence, Bordeaux, and Champagne, among other places, and they are some big names. This is a serious place for wine in the future!    I really encourage you to take a look at Barnaby's article. It's a great read and will really get you thinking about what's next.   If you want to read about Scandinavian wine, here are a few sources I used: The Wine Gastronome The New York Times: Scandinavian Wine? I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Nancy Spencer and discuss some of her work and perceptions towards disability and disability models. Disability models are used to view and conceptualize disability, as well as to understand how society interacts and impacts disability. Dr. Spencer is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. Dr. Spencer has written numerous articles questioning how we view disability in the field of adapted physical activity. Recently she wrote a book chapter called "Disability Language in Adapted Physical Education", along with Drs. Peers and Eales, in the Routledge Handbook of Adapted Physical Education. In addition to her work on disability models, Dr. Spencer's research interests are in the areas of adapted physical activity and children’s physical activity. According to her faculty page, she is "committed to understanding how to facilitate inclusive and meaningful experiences in play, sport (parasport) and recreation for children and specifically people who experience disability, using qualitative approaches to research".

The way you interact with the world, the way you play on a golf course, the results you get in life, is to a very large extent governed by the chemistry of your brain. If you are not fuelling the brain efficiently then all of the ‘techniques’ you may try to employ will be less than effective. I am really excited about the research we are presenting today on the Brain Booster about how MCT oils can make SUCH a difference to the effectiveness of your brain on a daily basis.   Today we are joined by   Colm O’Donnell - Founder of Nuroco   Jake Ashton - Lead Researcher of Sports and Exercise Science at Liverpool Hope University   Paul Eales -  European Tour Winner, broadcaster on BBC TV, BBC Radio 5 Live & European Tour Productions. Chief ambassador for Nuroco   We have a very wide ranging discussion about MCT and what it can do for your brain in terms of performance.   Nuroco aims to improve brain function, focus, concentration and overall neurofitness. A background in clinical nutrition inspired a unique new sport supplement that could boost the mental performance of athletes and is now backed by pioneering scientific research.   Already being used by a number of elite professional golfers on the European Tour and Ladies European Tour, Nuroco are ‘driving neurofitness and neuroperformance in sport’.   Nuroco offers a fuel for our brains to ensure our brain is energised and able to perform at it’s best, on and off the course. We also discuss how this alternative energy for the brain bypasses the energy deficit that seems to occur when we age and may help to alleviate or slow the progression of Mild Cognitive Impairment or Alzheimer’s   There is a special Brain Booster discount for listeners who want to try the Nuroco gels Use the CODE …BrainBooster on checkout to get 20% off Go to www.nurocoenergy.com   Do you want to BECOME a Certified Mind Factor Coach? I know this topic may seem wonky, but consider a world where you could look at a wine label and see if there was extra, unwanted sweetness or if the wine was packed with chemicals (actual picture of big hulking winery on the right, below).                                                                         Barnaby Eales, international wine journalist takes us through the European Union's ultimatum to producers, the machinations they are going through, and the likely outcomes of transparency in wine. From the impact on top conventional producers (it should be great -- they can finally stand up to "natural wine" producers and say their products aren't loaded with chemicals) to the producers that may have to cop to a list of additives a mile long (industrial wine, I'm looking at you!), we go over the ramifications of this initiative, the complications behind it, and the benefits transparency brings to us all.  Barnaby's article is here: The EU Moves on Wine Ingredient Labeling Above: Barnaby Eales, Journalist ______________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week: Thanks to YOU! The podcast supporters on Patreon, who are helping us to make the podcast possible and who we give goodies in return for their help! Eales talked about the players being able to train individually from the training facility starting tomorrow. “Look it’s exciting because at least we have that first glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.” Eales said “Starting tomorrow we’re allowed to do individual training from the training ground, it’s very limited they’re not actually going into the building. It’s very strict in terms of the measures we have for safety, players will be on four quadrants of the pitch, they’re not allowed to interact. At least it gets them back out to a facility, part of this is for safety because it’s much better for them to be doing it in conditions that we can control then going to public parks or gyms that are locally open.”

Only a handful of professionals have won an all three of the main European Tours The Challenge Tour, The European Tour and the Senior European Tour. To have achieved such a feat shows a man who has a game and a mindset that has stood the test of time. Paul played on the European Tour with some of the true legends of the game such as Seve Ballesteros, Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer. In this fascinating show Paul gives an inside the ropes view on what made these players so great. We also look at the effect of his early environment, having the opportunity to play each day as a young professional at Royal Lytham and St Annes We discuss how Paul at times struggles with his game when he went too far down the technical route and how his game was salvaged by understanding a more instinctive way to play under the guidance of a previous podcast guest Kendal McWade. We look at the game today and some of the mistakes that many young players fall into the trap of. We look at technology and how it can either be a wonderful assistance or a curse to your game. Paul talks with great candour about some of his own struggles and then how Senior golf has rejuvenated his appetite for the game. For anyone listening to this who is past the age of forty you will be inspired by this story and how keeping an open mind and setting yourself a clear direction is such an important part of living a meaningful life How Paul feels he is playing the best golf of his life due to more awareness and control of the club How he STILL feels he can get even better How the passion for learning is a strong if not stronger than ever How he would have done things differently on the European Tour given the chance to go back We discuss the vital role and effect of environment and how YOU as an individual need at times to make some TOUGH decisions and more importantly take OWNERSHIP of your life and your learning How groups tend to succeed or fail TOGETHER Really getting to understand WHY you play the game What kind of game do YOU want to play?
