Episode Summary PMOs are often seen as administrative hubs, yet they possess far greater potential when aligned with organizational strategy. Cornelius Fichtner welcomes seasoned consultant and leader, Demi Anderson, who has more than three decades of experience in project, program, and portfolio management. She shows how PMOs can focus on strategic goals rather than serving solely as process gatekeepers. And we learn that each PMO setup depends on the needs of the company, from a temporary project-level office to a permanent enterprise-level structure.

Having ADD or ADHD is a gift, not a curse. Hear from people all around the globe, from every walk of life, in every profession, from Rock Stars to CEOs, from Teachers to Politicians, who have learned how to unlock the gifts of their ADD and ADHD diagnosis, and use it to their personal and professional advantage, to build businesses, become millionaires, or simply better their lives.   Our guest today is Aleksandra Czech-Seklecka. She is an entrepreneur originally from Poland, now living in Scotland. Her career journey has been diverse and shaped by a deep curiosity and drive to pursue multiple passions, holding degrees in cross-cultural psychology, media psychology, and cultural studies with a specialization in Japanese culture, along with certification in the Japanese language. In her own words: Growing up, I faced many challenges. I come from a difficult family background and was bullied throughout most of my life, which deeply impacted my self-esteem. These experiences, combined with the struggle of living with undiagnosed ADHD and with chronic pain, with undiagnosed endometriosis, pushed me to develop resilience and determination. I learned early on how to persevere, which has shaped the way I approach life and business today. After a few career starts I moved into project management at Samsung R&D Institute Poland, gained certifications in Prince2 and Agile, and co-created a Project Management Office for Android commercialization across Europe. After moving to Scotland, my career took an unexpected turn due to health challenges. I was diagnosed with endometriosis (finally after 20 years of suffering), which required multiple surgeries and led to a significant gap in my employment. This challenging period pushed me to reinvent myself, and I decided to focus on building my own business. During this time, finding work was made even more difficult by the timing of Brexit, which created additional barriers. So instead of banging my head against the wall, I decided to build my own business. I had many ideas, but I was constantly searching for something that could truly help others because I love helping people. That's when VanFill was born - an on-demand platform connecting customers with transport providers using empty spaces in vans and trucks, helping underserved communities access delivery services. The idea came to life when I organized a collection of medical supplies in Scotland for Ukraine. I realized that this platform would be another way I could help others. I turned this idea into reality by learning no-code tools to build the prototype. Since then, I have participated in numerous accelerators and business programs to develop the skills and networks needed to bring VanFill to life. Throughout my life, I've been actively involved in volunteering - supporting women with chronic pain and health conditions, working with different charities, and helping minority groups. In addition to my entrepreneurial work, I am deeply committed to advocating for women living with chronic illness and chronic pain. As someone who also lives with ADHD, I know firsthand the mental and physical hurdles that can arise. Through my journey, I want to inspire and empower women facing similar challenges to pursue their goals despite the obstacles. Currently, I am writing a book aimed at helping entrepreneurs, with a special focus on those living with ADHD and chronic conditions, offering guidance and inspiration for navigating the challenges of building a business while managing health difficulties and living with ADHD. I believe that no matter the challenges - be it chronic pain, personal struggles, or professional roadblocks - there is always a way forward. We just need to find the right map and guidance to not get lost on our way. Enjoy! Summary In this episode, Andy interviews Laura Barnard about her book, The Impact Engine: Accelerating Strategy Delivery for PMO and Transformation Leaders. They discuss Laura's journey in setting up PMOs, the common mistakes and resistance faced, and the importance of change management and mindset in driving success. Laura introduces the Impact Engine system, a framework she developed to help organizations deliver sustainable value. The conversation also covers how project managers can become strategy navigators and effectively communicate with stakeholders. It's a fun, practical discussion that will help improve your ability to lead teams and deliver projects. Sound Bites "People are not actually resistant to change. They are resistant to having change done to them." "A lot of what we teach first is that you have to shift the way you think about the work you do... and really become what we call the strategy navigator for the organization." "Give them what they want before you give them what they need" "It's not just about the templates, tools, and process that you're creating. It's about the business problems you're solving." "I wish I had me when I was you. I wish I had somebody who would say don't do this, do this instead... I needed to help them so that they can have an easier path than I had." "Knowledge alone is not power. It's the application of that knowledge where you make a real impact. If you do the work, you will see the results." In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Ruth Bedingfield. Ruth shares her journey working as a PMO Leader and her path to joining KeyedIn supporting customers. Ruth and Joe discuss the importance of listening, how to react when opportunity knocks, and having passion for your work. Ruth has 15 years of business expertise with 5+ years focused on the Project Management Office. She understands what successful PMOs are doing today to bring value for their businesses tomorrow through working closely with enterprise project management professionals looking to deliver the value outcomes their businesses need. She understands the role of the PMO for today's evolving businesses and jumps at the opportunity to help PMOs achieve their goals through data-driven insights from powerful project portfolio management software.Ruth shared how important it is to be adaptive and flexible as a PMO Leader, “So I think I always like in PMO to being on the ocean. Sometimes it's forever changing, but the ground is never stable. Sometimes the waves are small and it's like a mill pond, sometimes it's like a storm and the waves are crashing down around you. But as a PMO, you learn and you adapt to ride those waves. I think agility and adaptability were really key for me to be able to grow in the role of the PMO Officer.”Many PMOs face the challenge of overcoming the perception of being the Project Management Police. Ruth had great perspective on this, “it was a really interesting journey. When I was able to sort of get hold of the reigns, I was really fortunate to also have the support of some really strong open minded leaders and sponsors as well as PMO that really felt the value. I think that was one key benefit that I certainly benefited from within our organization. But we did a full reset. I said to everybody, just stop, it's not working. We're firefighting, for instance. We're chasing tails, we're not proactively listening. We need to stop. That's exactly what we did. And we went back to basics.”Listen to the full episode to hear how working with KeyedIn as a vendor eventually led Ruth to joining the KeyedIn team supporting customers. WENDY GROUNDS:  Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. My name is Wendy Grounds, and with me in the studio is Bill Yates.  This podcast is about project management.  Join us to be motivated and inspired by project stories, leadership lessons, and wise advice from industry experts from all across the world. One of those leadership experts is who we're talking to today.  Sanjiv Augustine is the founder and CEO of LitheSpeed LLC and the Agile Leadership Academy.  Sanjiv is the author of the books “From PMO to VMO,” “Managing Agile Projects,” and “Scaling Agile.”  He's been an in-the-trenches practitioner.  He's also managed many agile projects, and he has trained thousands of agile practitioners. BILL YATES:  Sanjiv is the chair of the Agile Alliance's Agile Executive Forum and the founder and moderator of the Lean Startup in the Enterprise Meetup.  He was also a founding member of the Project Management Institute's agile community of practice.  So not only is he a well-versed practitioner, but he's had a lot of influence in shaping how many of these organizations have addressed and scaled agile. WENDY GROUNDS:  Sanjiv, welcome to Manage This.  Thank you so much for being our guest. SANJIV AUGUSTINE:  Thank you very much, Wendy.  I really appreciate being here with both Bill and you. Sanjiv's Background Story WENDY GROUNDS:  Yeah, we're looking forward to tackling this topic and getting your expertise.  But before we get into that, can you tell us about your background working with organizations and those in the trenches who want to adopt agile practices, and just a little bit about what you do. SANJIV AUGUSTINE:  Thanks for this opportunity, once again.  And I want to start with about 20 years ago, believe it or not.  I've been in the industry for about 30 years.  But 20 years ago I started my agile journey.  This is with an organization that you might know.  It's the Capital One Bank.  And the CIO at that time was looking for a way to cut their time to market by 50%.  And so he went to his CTO and said, “Please find a way to do this with agile methods.”  And in those days nobody was crazy enough to sign up for that. But we ended up partnering with the CTO of Capital One and ending up rolling out agile methods, more specifically scrum, in three countries, with 5,000 people.  So it was a massive enterprise adoption.  We made mistakes along the way, learned lots of great lessons along the way, and here we are 20 years later. BILL YATES:  Yeah, you were on the cutting edge 20 years ago.  That's amazing that you guys were kind of in the lab of, okay, we think this works for scrum.

This week I would like to emphasize the importance of pivoting along your life's journey with confidence.  This is the point of view from Leon Green, a 20 plus year Health IT professional.  He weaves a story that leads him from his home island of Jamaica to the U.S., where he does not know a soul and is challenged to make his mark in the world. Leon Green says it is a good idea to develop survival skills with an open mind that teach you to fully realize your opportunities with an appetite to advance yourself through education and training. Take the time to understand your craft, and do not be afraid to embrace change. Leon Green received a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of New York, Binghamton campus, and is currently Director of the Project Management Office (PMO) at VITAS Healthcare, the nation's leading provider of end-of-life care. He was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, and immigrated to the United States in 1987. He has over 25 years of experience in Health Information Technology (HIT), with work experiences from multiple corporations in healthcare, transportation & logistics, consulting, and systems integration.
