Why do some songs get stuck in our heads so easily?
Radio IDs, something few of us (me included) think of but have all experienced and cherished. They are those fun zingers, prompting a new radio show or DJ. They change for the holidays and for topical reference. They are the sounds of our past, present, and future, and the focus of this episode. Twenty Thousand Hertz hired me to produce an episode on Radio IDs and now I'm sharing its ENCORE. Thank you to Twenty Thousand Hertz, Dallas Taylor, and Casey Emmerling for letting me run this ENCORE and for hiring me to produce it in the first place. The original episode can be found here. After Stinkpotty “Good Morning” greetings, the Fat One is back with a recap of his day in Fat Acres and somehow is able to fill the 20 minutes with nattering plus his plans for his trip to Lost Wages to see The Wizard. Happy National Root Beer Float Day.
Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is another of the parenting books we love to hate (or at least find fault with). It's called Hunt, Gather, Parent: What Ancient Cultures Can Teach Us About the Lost Art of Raising Happy, Helpful Little Humans by Michaeleen Doucleff. Mentioned: Similar "other cultures have this figured out" books on French, Danish, and broadly Scandinavian parenting.Terri's random recommendation is a few earworms she generously shares with us: First, a song about pronouncing Rob McElhenney's name (mentioned on our Lost recap two weeks ago), for which we can thank Ryan Reynolds; "Ben Franklin's Song," by the Decembrists from Hamildrops; and "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road," by Loudon Wainwright III. Mentioned: A New York Times article about McElhenney's show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2021 on life's many pressures.Next week's lineup: Lost S3 E 10, “Tricia Tanaka Is Dead,” on Tuesday, August 5The Gilded Age S3 E3, "Love Is Never Easy," on Wednesday, August 6Weekly roundup on Thursday, August 7Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available. This episode was recorded before a live studio audience ... of dogs.
Remember when your musical taste knew no boundaries? When your Discman would jump from ICP to Britney Spears without missing a beat? This episode is a love letter to that chaotic musical era that shaped us.We kick things off with some seriously infectious earworms—Thumpasaurus's "Struttin'" and Ween's "Boys Club"—songs that plant themselves in your brain and refuse to leave. These quirky, catchy tunes lead us down memory lane to our guiltiest musical pleasures from the late 90s and early 2000s.The conversation takes a nostalgic turn as we revisit our teenage obsessions with Insane Clown Posse's "Riddle Box" album and Bloodhound Gang's irreverent catalog. We reflect on a time when MTV's TRL would showcase Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Enrique Iglesias "Bailamos" in the same hour—a musical diversity that seems increasingly rare in today's algorithm-driven world.Gaming enthusiasts will appreciate our deep dive into College Football 26, where we break down the gameplay challenges, Road to Glory mode, and how this latest installment captures the authentic college football experience. From high school recruitment to dodging Nebraska's defense as an Ohio State quarterback, the game delivers an immersive and surprisingly difficult challenge.Film buffs aren't left out either, as we share our thoughts on the new Superman movie (spoiler: it's better than Man of Steel) and the profound impact of finally watching Schindler's List. We wrap things up by exploring some outstanding female-fronted metal bands that deserve more recognition.Whether you're looking to rediscover the soundtrack of your youth or find some new music to add to your playlist, this episode bridges past and present with equal parts nostalgia and discovery. Matt and Dr. Eti Ben Simone are back again today to answer even more of your brilliant sleep questions! They begin by discussing smartphones, noting that the direct EMF impact on brainwaves is debatable, but that psychological activation and blue light are known disruptors. Moving onto naps, Matt explains longer ones can cause "sleep inertia," while short naps (20 mins) can be beneficial, unless insomnia is present. They then examine the full moon's debated effect on sleep, and how it is possibly obscured by modern lighting. Sleep paralysis is then explained as consciousness returning before REM sleep's muscle atonia ends, while "hypnic jerks" (jolts while falling asleep) are described as the brain misinterpreting muscle relaxation as falling. Finally, they explain that waking with an "earworm" is linked to memory consolidation and active music-processing brain areas during REM sleep. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.Tired of untrustworthy protein shakes? On today's show, Matt, JD & Rachel open the Is This Good? Mailbag to answer your burning questions about sponsoring a champagne room, buying a gym just so you can kick out its members, a Charlie Kaufman-themed amusement park, indoor waterslides, solving an urgent relationship problem, thanking people for holding the door open, signalling from a car with your hands, should we be inspired by Katy Perry going to space, seeing a band that's past their prime, shoving as many men as possible in a tiny restroom, getting confrontational with your employer, and a cure for how to unstick a song that's earwormed itself into your brain.
If you turn on the radio, there's one thing you're almost guaranteed to hear: a catchy, over the top jingle proclaiming the name and call letters of the radio station.
