Medb, Queen of Connacht, is rightly renowned in Irish legend and mythology, as a strong and influential woman leader. Her centre of power, Cruachan Ai, is still recognised as one of the most important Iron-age sites in Ireland. Medb lead her people in her own name and by her own right. She was a strong woman in a society largely dominated by strong men. She fought hard to maintain the high status of her rule throughout her long life but the choices she made, as always happens, had consequences. This audio-article endeavours to discover some something of Medb the woman, as she can be found in the old Irish texts? What choices did she have to make to protect her land and people and how did she come to terms with the consequences of those choices? It is an interesting story. This audio article is based on a presentation given for an on-line conference hosted by Vyvianne Armstrong. This conference is entitled Medb, Intoxication and Initiation. This is one of a series of upcoming conferences. If you would like to find out more, contact Vyviane at vyviane@landseaskytravel.com Music: A Trip to Emain by Gian Costello
Smith's Drugs, a fixture in Downtown Spartanburg for nearly a century, is set to see a major upgrade as plans were recently revealed to demolish the business's current one-story storefront at 142 E Main St and replace it with a new multi-story mixed-use building featuring a much larger footprint that will occupy much of the current parking lot next door and will include much more ground-floor retail (with perhaps another tenant) with residential units occupying the upper floors. Details are still being finalized on the project, which could ultimately feature an under-building drive-thru for pharmacy customers and could be between three and five stories. Today on the podcast, we're talking with City Associate Planner, Apoorva Kumar and William Gray, Associate Principal at McMillan Pazdan Smith, the developer's architecture firm, about this new development and how it fits in with recent improvements and openings along E Main Street.
A crucial corner at one of the city's most important downtown gateway intersections is set to get a huge makeover with construction of a new 19,000 square foot development on the southeast corner of E Main and Pine streets. Anchored by United Community Bank, the two-story building will feature new office and retail space and is set help transform one of the busiest intersections in Spartanburg. On Wednesday, the City's Design Review Board gave final approval to the project after initially requesting some changes to the design at their meeting in August, clearing the way for development to move forward. In addition to being a huge win for Spartanburg, the Main and Pine development is also a good test case for us to get down to the nitty-gritty on a few of our weightier local government topics, planning. What was the reasoning behind Design Review Board's requested changes in their previous meeting? How does working with developers on their designs fit in with other improvements the City undertakes downtown? What is the overall goal in regulating the design of structures built in the downtown area in the first place? To the layperson, the deliberation between regulating bodies and developers might seem unnecessary, perhaps even an example of government overreach, but the underlying reason behind all if it couldn't be simpler: thoughtful planning ensures that the individual pieces of our city fit together to form a better whole than if each piece were considered solely in isolation. Today on the podcast, we've got City Senior Planner, Natalia Rosario to help us answer those questions.
In this episode we dive deep into Brocato’s sandwich shop, a Tampa staple and arguably the best cuban sandwich around. But their true gem is their Deviled Crab! Also we call out some Patio 850, Posto 9 and 801 E Main for doing it right in our neighbor to the east, beautiful Lakeland Florida. And […]
When the roman numerals on a City Council agenda reach high enough for folks to have to think back on their school days to remember what item number is up for discussion, you know it's a busy night. Such was the case this past Monday, as Spartanburg City Council gave unanimous approval to three new major developments. The projects include two on the city's Northside, a new 16,000 square foot mixed-use development on the corner of College and Howard Street and redevelopment of the historic Fremont School into 41 market rate apartments, and a new 19,000 square foot mixed use development at a major gateway into downtown on E Main and Pine streets. Council also heard from city residents and rental property owners about a proposed registry program for the city's 7,000+ residential rental properties. Under the plan, residential rental property owners pay a $25 per-unit fee (maximum $250, waived if the property owner holds a city business license). The plan also would include periodic inspections to ensure rentals meet city building codes. The objective of the registry program would be to, over time, reduce the number of unsafe and unlivable rental units currently in the city, thereby reducing neighborhood blight and improving overall housing stock within the city. Council made no decision regarding the registry proposal and will take up the matter at a later meeting. Today on the podcast, we're talking with Assistant City Manager Chris Story to give you the details on all the action from Monday's meeting.
It's been a property near the top of City Staff's potential historic redevelopment list for a long time, and after , a building that was once one of Spartanburg's anchor department stores is on its way to a new life, bringing new residential options and ground floor retail space to downtown on the move. Located at 174 East Main Street, across from Denny's Plaza, the former home of Bishop Furniture and the Aug W Smith Department Store is slated to become 46 upscale apartment units and ground level storefront space after an extensive interior and exterior renovation project undertaken by Blue Wall REII, LLLC, a Greenville-based developer set to purchase the building. Today on the podcast, we're taking a deeper dive on this historic renovation and how it fits into the larger downtown redevelopment story.
Here at the City, we're always on the lookout for new ways to engage with Spartanburg's residents and fans. This week, two things in that vein made it into our podcast. First, in a test run of what we hope will be many future uses to come, the recording of this podcast was , a video streaming app that allows users to watch events in real time. . We're planning to use this new tool to add some great new content to our social media landscape. The other bit of new social media engagement has to do with photos. You all take a lot of really great photos of our beautiful city. We routinely see shots on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter taken by our residents that would shame many taken by professional photographers, so we started to ask ourselves how best to encourage this amazing trend of great local photos, and how to share some of these outstanding shots with a wider audience. Enter, the #SpartanSnaps social media cover photo extravaganza! The rules couldn't possibly be any simpler. Take a beautiful photo showing something distinctly Spartanburg. Maybe you frequent the Rail Trail, and the sunset looks really great that day. Maybe you're watching a fantastic performance at the Chapman Cultural Center. Maybe the way the light hit the bricks on E Main was looking really good one day. Your ideas, your inspiration, your vision of Spartanburg, that's what we want to see. Post that photo to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter using the #SpartanSnaps tag. Please make sure your posts are public, so that we can see them. Wait. It really is that simple. Each week, we'll choose a new #SpartanSnaps photo to be used as the cover photo on our Facebook and Twitter accounts (with all the credit, mad props, local internet fame, etc. given to the original photographer, obviously). So start snapping those photos! Also on this week's podcast, we give an update on some great news for one of Spartanburg's true originals, as , and we also rundown the latest in downtown development news.
Some big changes are in the works for E Main St. in Downtown Spartanburg, as a is set to get underway early next month. The project is part of a , and includes straightening the chicanes on E Main Street between Church and Liberty streets. The plan also will eliminate the existing alternating diagonal parking spaces, adding new larger tree islands between sections of parallel parking to improve pedestrian movement. Several new parking spaces are to be added with the new streetscaping. Coming on the heels of the streetscaping plan's first enhancement project on Wall St. the E Main St. plan is designed to improve the area's pedestrian experience, helping to drive more foot traffic to existing businesses as well as beautifying the area to encourage further development. Today on the podcast, we take a deeper look at the E Main project, and discuss future improvements in the works, including a plan to improve Magnolia St. and the long-awaited extension of the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail to St John St.
Fergus mac Léite gets to encounter the underwater world of the Lupracán, a story which in the late middle / early modern Irish version, almost certainly, inspired Swift's wonderful satire, 'Gulliver's Travels'. Unstoppable visions of an ancient lifetime steal days from her. The danger escalates when she wakes up physically injured and marked with a strange symbol. While Eve battles the past to maintain her sanity and safety, her project is jeopardized as another researcher’s attempts to take over. One partner dies and another is accused of inappropriate conduct. Eve and her friend, Dr. Andrea McMurray, don’t believe in coincidence and probe their shared visions for answers. On the other side of the Atlantic, Welshman Ryerson Sanders is haunted by his dreams and believes Eve’s research project can help him. For both of them, an ancient Celtic prophecy and long-sought revenge entangles the past with the present. A druidess and a shape-shifter must join to save the druid way of life, while a queen conspires to kill Erin’s only high king. Will the oaths and agendas of the past reach across the centuries to strengthen or to destroy? Find the book at Podiobooks.com and at themarkofadruid.com.
