Canada's path to net zero hinges on electrification. As the world's fourth-largest producer of hydroelectricity, we're primed to take a global leadership role. With the provinces and territories at different stages of grid decarbonization, electrification doesn't have to be “all or nothing” — regions with a longer way to go can take a phased approach, incorporating supplemental energy sources. But what about chilly Canadian winters? Cold-climate heat pumps now operate efficiently at -25°C. Of course, the best time to electrify may be during the initial build. But the second best time is now. Mariko Michasiw, program manager for B2E, the Building to Electrification Coalition, explains how cold-climate heat pumps, strategic retrofits, and grid planning are key to scaling electrification.Join the Building Good community today:https://www.buildinggood.caLinkedIn

So long summer! Peter and Jackie are back in the studio and are discussing the energy news from the past few months. They kick off the podcast by discussing political developments in the United States and Canada. Then, they examine the drop in clean energy stocks over the summer and the weaker market sentiment, including the rapid decline in BC's low carbon fuel standard (LCFS) credit price. Lastly, they discuss the low prices for natural gas in Alberta, which averaged only $C 0.60/GJ in August. Questions covered during the podcast: Is the lack of a national taxonomy that defines what projects count as clean, green, and sustainable slowing investment? Should decarbonization projects, including reducing emissions from oil and gas, be included in the definition of sustainable finance? What are the barriers to increasing private spending on Canadian clean energy projects? Considering the situation, is Canada's 2030 emissions reduction goal achievable? This week, Jean-Denis Charlebois joins the podcast. Jean-Denis is the Chief Economist at the Canada Energy Regulator (CER). The CER released a report in June outlining three potential future energy scenarios, titled “Canada's Energy Future 2023: Energy Supply and Demand Projections to 2050.” Here are some of the questions Peter and Jackie asked Jean-Denis: Why did the CER publish net-zero scenarios for the first time in this recent edition? Are you concerned about how these scenarios are implicitly being used as predictions by politicians or other commentators on energy in Canada? How much does Canadian electricity consumption increase in the CER scenarios? What is the potential market share for heat pumps? How does the mix of power generation change? What is the future cost of carbon? Canada's oil production is assumed to decline significantly in the net-zero scenarios; however, could supply be more resilient considering Canada's advantages as a stable, secure, and low-carbon supplier? What energy-focused capital spending is required for the Canadian net-zero scenarios, and how does that compare with history? This is the fourth of our ongoing series with Dr Simon Michaux. As ever, we ranged far and wide, but this time within the remit of 'what does the world look like in 2050 if we make good choices now?' Specifically, how do we construct and power our civilisation beyond the emergence of the new system. And yes, that's impossible to predict exactly, but it's not overly hard to make some basic observations - that we'll have phased out fossil fuels; that we'll reduce our inputs and outputs; that we'll live more simple, but higher quality lives. Specifically, we narrowed down on possible energy sources, and Simon proposed something which has been known for decades, but not put into practice, once again, with his trademark data to support his thesis. This one is genuinely hopeful - though of course we'll have to completely rearrange our entire value system to put the living biosphere (current and future) ahead of profit - but we do know this... Scientists have long been calling for a transition to clean energy to prevent catastrophic impacts of climate change. For much of that time, many people and, specifically, many of those in power, were skeptical of the need to do something about the warming climate. But even as the facts about the changing climate became increasingly […]

Hoe ziet Nederland eruit in 2050?
