‘Women in Revolt! Art and Activism in the UK 1970-1990 is a landmark exhibition at Tate Britain of feminist art in the UK from 1970 to 1990. The exhibition explores how interconnected networks of women used radical ideas and rebellious methods to make an invaluable contribution to British culture. Showcasing work by over 100 women artists and collectives living and working in the UK, this will be the first major survey of its kind. Painting, drawing, photography, textiles, printmaking, film, sculpture, and archival materials will be brought together to map a landscape of creative practice forged against a backdrop of extreme social, economic, and political change. As well as celebrating the work of well-known artists such as Sonia Boyce, Susan Hiller and Linder, Women in Revolt! will platform many women, who despite long careers, have been largely left outside the artistic narratives of the time. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was joined in the gallery spaces of Tate Britain by Hannah Marsh, Assistant Curator of ‘Women in Revolt!' to find out more about the women Artists and collectives featured in the exhibition and more about there work too. Toby began by asking Hannah why this 20 year period of work by many women artist and collectives is so important and how there work gives us a unique view point on what was happening in the UK at the time which was maybe not widely seen by us all through the media and news bulletins of the day. Toby and Hannah then went on to discussed more about some of the work on display in Women in Revolt!, how the work may have been influenced by other women in culture, music and fashion at the time. Then to highlighting a couple of rooms in the exhibition that people should definitely see before talking about whether there is more visibility and opportunities today for women artists in the art world, museums and galleries. Women in Revolt! continues at Tate Britain until 4 April 2024 and audio described guided tours lead by one of Tate's Visitor Engagement Assistants can be booked by either emailing hello@Tate.org.uk or calling 020 7887 8888 More details about the ‘Women in Revolt!' exhibition ‘at Tate Britain can be found by visiting the following pages of the Tate website- https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-britain/women-in-revolt Image shows Gina Birch, still from 3 Minute Scream, 1977. Sydney band Body Type draw us in with their pop hooks, before chewing us up and spitting us out with their visceral take downs. They've got a knack for that sweet and sour, writing songs that are trojan horses and pack a punch. With two albums under their belt, they're proving themselves as one of Australia's best new bands, and I love their work. So I asked them to Take 5. Gina Birch, Kathleen Hanna, Mark Moore, and Stephen McRobbie how their teenage years influenced their path into music, how it felt to be doing something creative and combative for a living, and being at peace with themselves later in life. Gina Birch was inspired to form post punk band the Raincoats after seeing the Slits in 1977. They recorded their self-titled debut album that same year, and went on to record three further albums, the last of which was released in 1996. She is also a film-maker and painter, and staged her first solo show last year. After around 45 years in the business, she recently released her debut solo album I Play My Bass Loud. Kathleen Hanna is an American singer, musician and pioneer of the feminist punk riot grrrl movement. She co-formed punk band Bikini Kill in 1990, and went on to form Le Tigre in 1998, and The Julie Ruin in 2010. She's currently on tour with Le Tigre. Mark Moore is a British dance music record producer and DJ. In 1998 he topped the UK chart with his pioneering dance act S'Express and their legendary track Theme From S'Express. He is engrained in the history of UK club culture and is hugely influential to both UK dance and pop music. Stephen McRobbie is the frontman and founder member of the cult Glasgow indie rock band The Pastels. They formed in 1981, have released 5 studio albums, and are cited as influences on everyone from The Jesus and Mary Chain to Primal Scream, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, and Nirvana.

Gina Birch is a true trailblazer. Co-founder of the all girl post punk band The Raincoats, the music herself and Ana de Silva headed up, which so often hit the soft spot between experimental, choaotic and melodic in the truest Velvets sense, paved the way for decades of music to come and did so much for female visibility in bands. Along the way, the group picked up fans like Kurt Cobain, who invited them on tour. Now, balancing a life of creativity between music, painting and film, Gina talks with Paul about her debut solo LP I Play My Bass Loud and reflects on everything from seeing The Slits to stilletoes to Zoom ettiquette to creativity.Gina Birch's album I Play My Bass Loud is out now on Third Man Records.Lost and Sound is proudly sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. Art school daredevil and post-punk legend Gina Birch, co-founder of The Raincoats, takes the limelight with her first-ever solo album. One of our favorites on the record is “I Play My Bass Loud,” a piece that distills Birch's years of musical, political, and artistic life into a title track banger.

As she'll note in the beginning of this interview with Sean Gonsalves, Gina Birch loves her job as Program Coordinator at the Ashbury Senior Computer Community Center in Cleveland, Ohio. She discusses the remarkable transition in Cleveland from a city lagging in digital equity metrics to one toward the top of its game. They discuss the Affordable Connectivity Plan, ACP, and some of the challenges associated with the digital divide. Finally, they discuss some of the lessons they have taken from the Net Inclusion conference.
The Raincoats emerged from the London punk scene in the late '70s and were one of the very first all-female bands who wrote and performed all their own music. Now, 40 years later, co-founding member Gina Birch has just released her first solo album, titled 'I Play My Bass Loud.' KEXP's Janice Headley talks with Gina about the new release, her time with The Raincoats, and how Kurt Cobain got a copy of The Raincoats' first LP. Circumstances surrounding an artist frequently develop that passion and are expressed in their medium. You are never too old or too young to follow your artistic flair. BIOS: GINA BIRCH Gina Birch is a founder member and songwriter of pioneering post punk band The Raincoats. Over 4 albums, The Raincoats helped shape the timeless notion that punk is what you make it to be – an act of raw expression, not any one sound. They set a crucial precedent for feminist work within a DIY punk context. Gina has made videos and super 8 films, performance art, played with Red Crayola /Art and Language, and among many other achievements she has been raising two daughters with her husband Mike. Birch has been painting solidly for four years. TIANNA ESPERANZA Tianna Esperanza is a singer/songwriter who embodies a depth of talent and heart well beyond her years. Post-punk pioneer Gina Birch (bassist and founding member of UK band The Raincoats) joins the LSQ podcast on the eve of releasing her first ever solo album, the refreshing and irreverent collection I Play My Bass Loud, produced by Youth and out this week via Third Man. In episode 85, Birch talks about important music memories from her childhood (hearing her brother's Bob Marley records through the bedroom wall, seeing The Slits in concert and realizing that girls could also play in bands, and more), the early days of The Raincoats and how embracing their inexperience and enthusiastically presenting songs that were still "in the process of becoming" was a key part of their approach. We also talk about her work in visual arts, as a music video and short film director, and more recently via large scale paintings like the one you see a portion of on the new album's cover. Get a copy of I Play My Bass Loud and check out Birch's upcoming tour dates here.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of women who came up together during one of the most exciting musical eras ever, and who've got the stories to prove it: Gina Birch and Vivien Goldman. Birch started the Raincoats with friends from a London art college in 1977, stepping right into the burgeoning punk scene with records that were notoriously challenging in a scene not known for being particularly welcoming to women to begin with. The Raincoats were never poppy enough to flirt with the mainstream, but thanks to Kurt Cobain, the band had a bit of a resurrection in the mid-1990s. At Cobain's behest, Nirvana's American label re-released the Raincoats catalog, complete with liner notes by Cobain, and the band subsequently made its first album in over a decade. They were even set to tour with Nirvana in Europe, but Cobain's death scuppered that plan. But Birch didn't slow down; she set out on a filmmaking career while still pursuing music; she even made music videos for the likes of New Order and The Libertines. Later this year, Birch's paintings will accompany a hardbound volume of Sharon Van Etten's lyrics. Just recently, Jack White's Third Man Records came calling, and it reignited Birch's musical endeavors: This week marks the release of her first proper solo album, called I Play My Bass Loud. Check out the title track right here. Vivien Goldman is known more as a writer than as a musician, but she's done both of those things and much, much more. She worked in PR for Bob Marley and the Wailers way back when—and she lives part of the time in Jamaica nowadays, which is where she Zoomed in from. At the height of the punk boom, she released an influential single called “Launderette” before transitioning more into writer and journalist mode: She was the editor of influential UK music paper Sounds and co-wrote the Massive Attack song “Sly.” She was also roommates with Chrissie Hynde and, more important to this conversation, Geoff Travis of Rough Trade Records, which is how she got to know Gina Birch. These days, Goldman has been teaching about the history of punk at NYU, and she dove back into music last year, releasing an album called Next is Now. I've only scratched the surface, too: Check out viviengoldman.com for a more complete picture. In this conversation, Birch and Goldman chat about the old days and the newer days, how roles and respect for women have changed over the decades, and about the famous musician and producer, Youth, who encouraged them both—and produced both of their new records. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Gina Birch and Vivien Goldman for this fantastic chat. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all we've got on offer at Talkhouse.com. Forged within the punk youthquake in 1977, The Raincoats are one of my favourite bands. I'm not alone in my love of them. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was famously a fan. Sonic Youth too. Simpsons creator Matt Groening. Jeff Magnum of Neutral Milk Hotel. But here's John Lydon to articulate the brilliance of the band perfectly. "The Raincoats,” says John, “offered a completely different way of doing things, as did X-Ray Spex, and all the books about punk have failed to realise that these women were involved for no other reason than that they were good and original". Yeah, that'll do.Now, on February 24th, bass player Gina Birch releases her first solo album, I Play My Bass Loud, on Jack White's Third Man Records. She disputes that first point to a degree, but it's certainly her debut release under just her name. I'll let her explain. What took her so long? Griffith was the long-time man on the ivory for The Funk Brothers, who were Motown's in-house band, and thus you have the passing of a man whose licks made soul what it was in the golden days. Lots of new soul to explore in our Sampled funk and soul first half tonight, with tunes from The Winston Brothers, The Allergies, Object Heavy, Avantdale Bowling Club, Allen Stone, and so many other worthies. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 2, 2022 is: emblazon im-BLAY-zun verb To emblazon something is to decorate its surface, usually with a name, slogan, or picture. // Her favorite souvenir from her trip to the Grand Canyon was a t-shirt emblazoned with a rosy sunset over the famous chasm. See the entry> Examples: “In Cod We Trust. It's a phrase emblazoned above the picture window at OK UK Fish-n-Chips in south Fort Myers, and it symbolizes the restaurant's laser-like focus on this staple British dish.” — Gina Birch, The News-Press (Fort Myers, Florida), 10 Aug. 2022 Did you know? Blazon is a less commonly used synonym of the more familiar coat of arms. Both centuries-old terms refer to heraldic designs, symbols, and other imagery (think crosses, lions, stripes, etc.) that typically appear on banners, shields, armor, and elsewhere. The verb form of blazon meaning “to represent armorial bearings in drawing or engraving” and emblazon, “to inscribe or adorn with or as if with heraldic bearings or devices,” came into use around the same time in the late 1500s. Emblazon still refers to marking something with an emblem of heraldry, but it is now more often used for adorning or publicizing something in any conspicuous way, whether with eye-catching decoration or colorful words of praise.
**NOTE: This is Part TWO of our two part episode.** Yeah, we're brassed off this week...but in a good way, because this week we're back with a two-parter discussing our Top 5 Songs with Horns with one the loveliest guests we've ever had on, HELEN McCOOKERYBOOK! Helen McCookerybook started playing bass in Brighton, England punk bands in the 1970s, before forming the John Peel-approved indie bands The Chefs and Helen and The Horns. Since then, Helen has embarked on a productive solo career, has taught songwriting and music production, and has published two well-respected books - The Lost Women of Rock Music: Female Musicians of the Punk Era and She's at the Controls: Sound Engineering, Production and Gender Ventriloquism in the 21st Century. The former inspired the documentary film that she co-produced with Gina Birch from The Raincoats, entitled Stories from the She-Punks. She's currently out playing gigs and has a new album on tap for October 7th, Drawing On My Dreams. Oh, and did we mention that she's a REAL LIFE PhD of Music? Sorry, Rocktor... Helen was so magnificent that we had to make this one a two parter. In Part 1, we discuss her career and current endeavors, and in Part 2, we get down to our lists. Of course, you'll want to listen to both of them! So tell us, who do *you* want to be today?!? Someone who listens to O3L, that's who. This week's O3L Spotlight artist is MONICA QUEEN. Monica is perhaps best known as the guest vocalist on Belle and Sebastian's 1997 single "Lazy Line Painter Jane." Monica is perhaps best known as the guest vocalist on Belle and Sebastian's 1997 single "Lazy Line Painter Jane." She's back with a new single, a cover of Vic Godard's "Stop That Girl," from the upcoming album of the same name. Gina has been a massive influence on culture and society throughout her life and inspiration for many. She's done film direction, videography, she's a painter and she is a co-founder of the hugely seminal post-punk band The Raincoats. What has struck me, both in her music and her painting is that she is her unique self, going where her heart and mind takes her, vandalising existing narratives with humour, subversion and vulnerability and, really importantly, having a lot of fun whilst doing it. I think it's this complete relatability that makes Gina's impact so powerful. Thanks Gina, this was just brilliant!“They seemed like ordinary people playing extraordinary music. They had enough confidence to be vulnerable and to be themselves without having to take on the mantle of male rock/punk rock aggression.… or the typical female as sex symbol avec irony or sensationalism.”- Kim Gordon, talking about The RaincoatsI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.- podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste

We're taking Florida wines seriously! It might be one of the state's best kept secrets, but Florida wine-making is a billion dollar industry. There are dozens of wineries across the state, employing nearly a hundred thousand people, and Florida university research departments dedicated to viticulture. The Zest host Robin Sussingham talks to Vince Shook, president of Florida Orange Groves Winery, a tropical, berry and citrus winery; Chuck Hollweg, non-commercial hobbyist grape grower and wine maker; and Gina Birch, host of Grape Minds podcast from WGCU.
