Japanese musician and composer Ikue Mori is widely known for her innovative work in experimental electronic music. Having initially gained recognition as a drummer for the avant-garde rock band DNA with Arto Lindsay in the late 1970s, she helped define the band's distinct sound. As her career evolved, Mori transitioned to using electronics and computers, exploring sound manipulation and producing intricate soundscapes that blend noise, rhythm, and melody. Her solo projects and collaborations with artists across genres have earned her a reputation as a pioneering force in the world of experimental music. In this episode, she discusses how songs by Ennio Morricone, Les Baxter, and Masuru Sato formed her sensibilities. Mori will perform at this year’s Big Ears Festival in Knoxville in March in her project with Zeena Parkins, Phantom Orchard.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sometimes an interview or an artist doesn't really need an introduction. Zeena Parkins is one of those artists. For decades, she has been exploring new aural terrain and creating her own unique frameworks for composition and improvisation. The scope of her work is vast, and its impact deeply felt. Last month, Chaikin Records released a boxed set of her incredible LACE project. Using something so familiar, Parkins recontextualized this fabric as a graphic score, creating a sonic code where pre-conceived ideas get turned on their head and possibilities emerge in endless threads. “LACE” is available now from Chaikin Records. https://zeenaparkinsprojects.bandcamp.com/album/lace The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Each episode features a musician, artist, writer, or anyone, really, focusing on a single project or idea. I know we all have limited time each day, so I wanted to do something a little smaller scale with just as much impact, so episodes will be 25-45 minutes in length. On today's episode, I talk to musician and composer Zeena Parkins. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Zeena is a pioneer of contemporary harp practices and has essentially "reinvented the harp". Since moving to New York in 1984, Zeena has collaborated with countless musical luminaries like John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Elliott Sharp and Bjork, recorded over a dozen fantastic albums and collected more accolades than you could count in a week, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. For 13 years, Zeena held the prestigious Darius Milhaud Chair in Composition at Mills College, and at the end of June, her latest album of compositions LACE will be released on Chaikin Records!

The guitarist, composer, ethnomusicologist, and instrument builder Paolo Angeli is associated with traditional Sardinian music and has co-organized an international arts festival in Palau since 1996. He has collaborated with Pat Metheny (who uses Angeli's guitar in Orchestrion), Fred Frith, Hamid Drake, Iva Bittova, Zeena Parkins, and Derek Gripper. Paolo Angeli plays the prepared Sardinian guitar, a hybrid electro-acoustic instrument that looks like a guitar crossed with a cello, and has virtually orchestral capabilities. Angeli's custom creation has been fitted cross-wise and lengthwise with additional strings: cello strings and drone strings, and has numerous other inventions attached to it, including hammers, pedals, and some propellers at variable speed. Then there's his array of effects, controlled by both his feet and hands. These custom modifications enable him to become a crazy-awesome one-man band, as he draws on Sardinian folk music, jazz, flamenco, Arabic suggestions, post-folk and contemporary classical music in his compositions. Paolo Angeli strums, bows, and hammers the instrument, and adds traditional Sardinian vocalizing, in a stunning performance of music from his latest, JAR'A, for this remote session, filmed on the island's northern shore. - Caryn Havlik Watch Paolo Angeli on the Sardinian shore:
As a boy, Tyler Hubby began making films and photographs. While in high school, he was mentored by then unknown director David Fincher. Later on, Tyler went on to study film and photography at the San Francisco Art Institute with "low-fi" underground film legend George Kuchar. His subversive and irreverent short films and videos detailing fetishism, co-dependency and bodily mutations have screened internationally, and are featured in Jack Sargeant's book Cinema Contra Cinema. Tyler has documented artists such as Faust, Keiji Haino, John Fahey, Jim O'Rourke, Rhys Chatham, Arnold Dreyblatt, Zeena Parkins, Jonathan Kane and Tony Conrad. Furthermore, he has edited over 30 documentary films. Most notable among them are The Devil and Daniel Johnston, a biography of mentally ill artist/musician Daniel Johnston; The Final Member which follows the curator of the Icelandic Phallological Museum as he attempts to complete his exotic penis collection; The Great Invisible, which won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW 2014. Tyler also served as an additional editor on the Oscar nominated Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired. Tyler wrote and directed Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present, a feature documentary about iconoclastic multi-media artist Tony Conrad that was named as one the best films of 2017 by Artforum.

Jeff edits many of these podcasts…and now it is time for him to speak! Jeff is a prolific musician and artist — creating in a variety of genres and formats. His works appear as stand-alone albums, as complements to performance art, and on pirate radio stations. I’ve long been a fan of Jeff’s music, and, in 2020, he released two of my favorite albums of his: Ditch and Scale with Zeena Parkins. I wanted to talk to Jeff about the differences between creating for “the art world” vs creating as a musician, as well as the role of improvisation in his process. Jeff also has some wild and hilarious stories about the variety of things that can go wrong when making art. If you're enjoying the show, the best way to support it is by sharing with your friends. If you don't have any friends, why not a leave a review? It makes a difference in terms of other people finding the show. You can also subscribe to receive my e-mail newsletter at www.toddnief.com. In the underground music scene of New York City, bassist, engineer, educator Kato Hideki is a most crucial participant. Before moving to New York City in 1992 Kato was an original member of Otomo Yoshihide's Ground Zero. Since arriving in New York, he has worked closely with John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Eyvind Kang, Fred Frith, Marc Ribot and Zeena Parkins among many others. He was born and raised in Nagoya, Japan and has played on many of my favorite records to come out of New York in the last twenty five years. A great talk with a great guy.
Kevin Robinson is a performer-composer, educator and multi-woodwind instrumentalist who explores various interdisciplinary approaches to composition and improvisation. He is a native of Baltimore, MD and is currently based in Oakland, CA. He has a MA in Composition Program from Mills College where he is studied with Roscoe Mitchell, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins and others. He received his BFA in Jazz Reeds from California Institute of the Arts where he studied composition with Wadada Leo Smith and Vinny Golia. Robinson is the leader of the band The Kevin Robinson Ensemble (KREation) which was established in 2003. The group has recorded several studio albums. He has performed at various festivals and venues throughout the United States. Some highlights include performances at the Studio Museum in Harlem in New York City, The Made in LA 2012 Biennial, The Hammer Museum in LA, Artscape Festival in Baltimore and at The Outsound Festival in San Francisco. He has collaborated with dancers, poets, visual artist, writers and film makers -including visual artist Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle and Warren Niedrich – film makers Sola Bamis and Shirley Kim. He has also performed with the Ulrich Krieger Sextet, Marilyn Crispell, Nicole Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith’s Creative Orchestra, the Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, Copper Root, Kuumba Collective, Warren Niedrich, the trio BRL and krautrock group Faust. He was a participant at the Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute (2012) at UCLA, a resident at Project Row Houses in Houston Texas (2013) and a resident at Atlantic Center for the Arts. The books he mentions in the interview are Footprints: The Life and Work of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock Possibilities and Octavia Butler, Lilith's Brood. Chris Cochrane has been living and working in New York City since 1980. As a guitarist he has worked with artists like John Zorn, Zeena Parkins, Marc Ribot and virtually every other improviser to come through the Downtown scene in the last three decades. In addition to his musical output, Chris is active as a social worker, helping people from NYC's impoverished neighborhoods navigate the ever confusing insurance system. He's a great guy and has led a most singular path as a creative individual in the modern world. This conversation was a long time coming and is definitely one of my favorites in this whole series.
Ryan Sawyer grew up in Texas, where he joined At The Drive In just long enough to play on the band’s first album. Now a long time resident of New York, Ryan has honed a style that exists at the convergence of punk and jazz. His collaborators have included Thurston Moore, TV On The Radio, Boredoms, Zeena Parkins, Charles Gayle, and Gang Gang Dance. He talks to Joe about self doubt, relevancy, his computer programmer parents, and the fortuitous experience of seeing Sheila E. at a young age.

Some Voices (00:00) Waudang 1 (00:26) “Howdy Doody” Theme (07:17) “Charlie Brown” Theme (07:45) “Vertigo” / “Psycho” Theme Medley (09:11) Fucshia (13:06) Triologue (17:28) Duologue (19:05) Solologue (19:49) Belem (20:36) Painted Desert (36:00) Live at the Metz’ Arsenal Part 2 (39:29) Quiet Money (46:26) The introductory chaos comes from R. Stevie Moore's second album, Delicate Tension. Recorded in 1978, but re-released at least twice and peppered with extra tracks over the decades. The first proper track, at about 00:25, is sacred flute music from New Guinea, recorded by Ragnar Johnson and assisted by Jessica Mayer. Wonderful folks, I'm sure. Robert Wyatt and his wife Alfreda Benge had some clout in getting these recordings released on Rounder in 1999. Digital mastering was done in July, 2015 and the revamped version of these recordings -- Sacred Flute Music from New Guinea-- will be out in mid-April on the Ideologic Organ label. Switching up rather radically, the following three tracks are from guitarist Gary Lucas, who has played with such wide-ranging artists as Captain Beefheart, Peter Hammill, and Jeff Buckley, as well as amassing an impressive body of solo work. These oddball takes on movie themes are from Lucas's album Cinefantastique. Next comes the track "Fuchsia" from the album Amaranth, by the trio who goes by the name Icepick -- Nate Wooley, Chris Corsano, and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten. Wooley plays trumpet, Corsano is on drums, and Haker-Flaten plays double-bass. Monofonous, 2016. The following three tracks also feature Nate Wooley, as well as Zeena Parkins and Vera Westera. The music and texts on this album are inspired by Charles Baudelaire and are the brainchild of composer Bojan Vuletic, who gave the trio of musicians ideas to work with and then reworked their playing into the final product. Partly composed, partly improvised. See here for more details regarding this fascinating record, fugitive beauté. The next two tracks are performances by the MMM Quartet - Fred Frith, Joelle Leandre, Alvin Curran and Urs Leimgruber, on guitar, double bass, piano, and sax, respectively. The first MMM track is titled "Belem" and is from the album Oakland/Lisboa. The second track, "Part 2" is the tail end of a concert given by the quartet from the album Live at Metz Arena. These tracks are separated by an intermission: "Painted Desert" is from the album The Pharaoh's Bee by ex-Pere Ubu member Allen Ravenstine. Ravenstine was the Ubu member responsible for upping the chaos ante by adding analog synthesizer noise to the proceedings. Quite unlike his contributions to Ubu, this album is full of gentle, meditative sounds, albeit not without a certain edge. More info here. Finally, "Quiet Money" by The Remote Viewers, from their latest album, November Sky. More info on The RVs here. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I enjoyed compiling it!

In this episode, we learn about Brian's passion for becoming a composer/musician, the constant challenges he faced with accepting that playing music could be a full-time profession that was meaningful and appreciated by others. Brian constantly struggled with accepting that working as a musician was a fine way of making a living, and eventually learned that he didn't need to work a traditional 9-5 job to contribute to the advancement of society. His genuine appreciation for the musical talent he was born with, his supportive environment, and the acknowledgement of the good luck he came across played a pivotal role in his success. We also discuss how failure is a part of the process, how accepting failure can actually be an achievement in the grander scheme of things, and how failure serves as motivation to continue on your path, not as a deterrent from it. Brian Baumbusch is a composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Oakland, California, whose "harmonically vivid... intense... simmering" (NY Times) compositions push the boundaries of new music. He has spearheaded projects of both western and non-western music which are considered a “cultural treat” (Maryland Gazette). He has headlined performances at the Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar, The Smithsonian Instituion in Washington, The Clarice Smith Center of Maryland, Kresge Hall at MIT, Cambridge, The Yerba Buena Center of San Francisco, and the Prado Concert Series in Madrid, among others. He has collaborated with musicians such as The JACK Quartet, Evan Ziporyn, Pauline Oliveros, David Behrman, Wayne Vitale, and I Made Bandem. Baumbusch has conducted extensive research and collaborated with a variety of musicians from around the globe. In 2009, he founded the Cacho Ensemble in Madrid, dedicated to reviving traditional Argentinean folk music, which has performed throughout Europe and the United States. In 2010, Baumbusch completed the first full English translation of Atahualpa Yupanqui's epic poem "El payador perseguido.” The translation was presented at the Embassy of Argentina in Washington D.C., sponsored by the cultural attaché of the embassy, Francisco Achaval, who describes Baumbusch's playing as embodying “supurb technique which, while listening, took me back to the deep heartland of my country; he has found a way to sing zambas from the bottom of his soul.” Baumbusch has also performed with and helped direct many Balinese gamelan groups across the U.S., including Dharma Swara of New York, Galak Tikka of Boston, Sekar Jaya of San Francisco, Gita Sari of Holy Cross, and Candra Kancana of Bard College. Dr. I Made Bandem describes Baumbusch as “a serious musician and composer whose profound understanding of Balinese music, dance, and culture has contributed a lot to the development of Balinese music.” In 2012, Baumbusch produced a large scale collaboration with the JACK Quartet and Balinese choreographers Dr. I Made Bandem and Dr. Suasthi Bandem, together with Dr. Bandem's performing group Makaradhwaja. They premiered their collaboration at the Bali Arts Festival in June, 2012. The Jakarta Post described the premiere saying "Baumbusch's overture was a grand and rich musical epic and instantly drew the crowd's amazement. Its patterns were intricate, a testament of Baumbusch's virtuosity and his ability to push the musicians to reveal the astounding ability of their instruments." Additionally, Baumbusch's arrangements of traditional gamelan pieces for string quartet caught the attention of David Harrington (violinist and director of the Kronos Quatet) who describes Baumbusch's work as “one of the finest attempts to bring the string quartet into the world of Gamelan music. For a composer so youthful to possess this expertise is a very hopeful sign.” In 2013, Baumbusch founded The Lightbulb Ensemble, an new-music composer's collective performing on steel instruments built and designed by Baumbusch. The group was highlighted in November of 2013 at the Performing Indonesia Festival at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, where they represented the advent of American experimental performing ensembles drawing heavy influence from gamelan music. In 2014, The Lightbulb Ensemble was awarded a major grant from the Gerbode Foundation, commissioning Baumbusch and his mentor and collaborator, Wayne Vitale, to compose an evening length work for The Lightbulb Ensemble to be premiered alongside Gamelan Sekar Jaya at the Yerba Buena Center of San Francisco, in May, 2015. The group is currently busy developing these ongoing projects. Baumbusch received his undergraduate degree from Bard College, where he studied microtonal composition with Kyle Gann, and received his M.A. in composition from Mills College, where he studied under various established composers including Chris Brown, Fred Frith, Roscoe Mitchell, and Zeena Parkins, among others. Baumbusch has lectured on composition and world music at the University of Maryland, The Smithsonian Institution, CalArts, Union College, Holy Cross, Bard College, Mills College, U.N. Reno, and the Escuela TAI of Madrid. He has additionally presented electronic music performances at UCSD, UCSB, CalArts, UNR and Mills College. He is currently based in the Bay Area. "In 1913 Futurist Luigi Russolo developed several noise machines, which he named ‘intonarumori’. In his manifesto, The Art of Noise, Russolo argued that musical instruments could no longer satisfy man's thirst for sounds. Almost 100 years later, people are still exploring the possibilities of sound. This is what I tried to capture in this mix - testing the limits of sound, from shrieking highs to almost imperceptible lows, finding new ways of interpreting and portraying life through the medium of sound. Despite including over 100 artists, the mix by no means represents a completist viewpoint; so many perhaps important artists in the development of 'noise' were left out. It was not my intention to do a 'who's who' of noise music, but rather to show how the exploration of sound has developed over time and how fascinating these explorations are. I did at times take into account the historical significance of the piece/artist when choosing tracks, although I was steered mainly by what was sonically interesting to me. Well that's it - the mix should speak for itself. If you are interested in digging deeper please follow the links provided. Listen at maximum volume and enjoy."
