There has been a lot of talk about how disruptive or even dangerous AI - or artificial intelligence might be. One thing is for sure it will change how many of us work - even if we don't know how yet. Eurofound is the EU based here in Ireland which carries out in-depth research into the workplace and has looked at what kind of jobs we will be doing a lot more or and a lot less in the near future. Speaking to Joe with more on this was Ivailo Kalfin Executive Director of Eurofound - before that, he was Bulgaria's Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

Ireland saw one of the biggest increases in the number of adults living with their parents. Between 2010 and 2019 the number of 25–34-year-olds living with their parents increased by 6% between 2010 and 2019, according to figures released today by EU agency Eurofound . The study coincides with the publication of census findings that show a drop in overall homeownership of 4% between 2011 and 2022. Andrea spoke to callers about their experience being adults living at home and parents who have their adult children living at home.

Over more than a decade, a series of economic crises have led to major shifts in the labour markets – creating new types of jobs and destroying existing ones. Researchers are examining the extent of these changes in employment structures, ranging from the decline in mid-paid jobs to the upgrading in high-paid, high-skilled jobs. How are these changes affecting different regions or economies? And which emerging sectors show the most promise for achieving employment growth in developed economies, as well as sustainable development, employment creation and poverty alleviation in less developed economies? In this episode, Sergio Torrejón Perez, economic and policy analyst in the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and coordinator of the joint ILO-JRC project “Global shifts in the employment structure”, and John Hurley, Senior Research Manager, Employment Unit, Eurofound, discuss these trends, and their impact on the future of work.

Eurofound, the EU agency providing knowledge to assist in the development of better social, employment and work-related policies, released the results of an EU wide survey on the living conditions of European citizens during COVID19. Among many results, the study shows that when social media is the preferred news source of people trust in institutions plummets. Meanwhile, in the Austrian city of Graz, an engineer is trying to push public institutions and citizens to adopt alternatives to mainstream commercial social media platforms to interact with their peers online. Joan O'Donnell is a longstanding advocate for inclusive employment practices. She is the author of the Future of Work a Remote Opportunity for Open Doors in Ireland and also evaluated the effectiveness of Irish employment policy as part of an EU study for Eurofound. She is the Project Manager of FreedomTech, which aims to ensure that we develop a comprehensive ecosystem of supports around AT, conceived of the concept of the AT Passport which has since gained recognition internationally as a way to put users in control of their own technology and Assistive Technology. Joan has a background working with complex social issues associated with disability from a social policy perspective. She lectures in Systems Thinking in Practice MSc programme with the Open University and is a doctoral researcher with the ALL Institute, Maynooth University.

These include anxiety, depression or even a burnout.Is burnout similar to depression then?Not really, because it’s seen as an occupational phenomenon, rather than a medical condition. The World Health Organisation defines burn-out as a “syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” American psychiatrist Herbert Freudenberger coined the term burn-out back in 1974 when he became the first person to publish research on the syndrome in the Journal of Social Issues.How can I tell if one of my colleagues is experiencing a burn-out then? There may be physical, emotional, cognitive, interpersonal and motivational signs. The three characteristics of occupational burn-out are: feelings of exhaustion, increased mental distance from, or negative feelings towards, your job and reduced efficiency. Est-ce qu’on gagne tous à décider de comment on exerce notre travail, à quel rythme, et dans quel but, ou est ce qu’on a aussi besoin de repères, d’un cadre, voire même d’une hiérarchie ? Est-ce que l’autonomie est forcément bénéfique, ou peut-elle aussi être toxique ?La question de l’autonomie est centrale dans les questions de qualité de vie au travail. A la fin des années 1970, Robert Karasek, un sociologue et psychologue américain, intègre cette notion dans un questionnaire qui étudie et mesure le stress au travail. Selon le modèle de Karasek, plus un salarié a d’autonomie, moins il a de stress, pour une charge de travail égale. C’est ce qu’explique Yves Roquelaure, professeur de médecine, santé au travail et ergonomie à l'Université d'Angers. D’ailleurs, un rapport remis en 2011 par le Collège d’expertise sur le suivi des risques psychosociaux au travail indique que le manque de latitude décisionnelle est un facteur de risque cardiovasculaire, et pour la santé mentale. C’est ce que soulève Agnès Parent-Thirion, sociologue, statisticienne et directrice de recherche à l’Eurofound, la Fondation européenne pour l’amélioration des conditions de vie et de travail. Cependant, si l’autonomie semble très positive, elle peut aussi avoir des effets toxiques, si elle n’est pas bien construite : si elle est prescrite, si les objectifs fixés sont trop ambitieux, ou si elle détruit les collectifs de travail. Is there a price for success? Are there win-win solutions for both employers and employees to achieve organisational success? These are some of the highly exciting issues we discuss today with our two guests, Giovanni Russo of Cedefop, and Gijs van Houten of Eurofound, who share with us the key findings of the fourth edition of the European Company Survey 2019: Workplace practices unlocking employee potential, jointly carried out by the EU agencies.

Massimiliano Mascherini, Head of the Social Policy unit in Eurofound, analyses the results of the fresh research of the agency in a conversation with FEPS Secretary General László Andor. Eurofound just published the document “Living, working and COVID-19” that reflects the most immediate economic and social effects of the crisis: The findings are devastating as they show the rapidly increasing levels of unemployment and risk of poverty in only six weeks and they preview that the impact of the outbreak will be even harder in the near future. Once more, young people are more touched by the consequences and they are those who suffer more depression and loneliness. Southern Europeans have clearly felt the lack of E.U. solidarity, while it is the East where citizens have the lowest level of trust in their health systems. The social consequences are already asymmetric and Mascherini affirms that the project of the European Union will only survive if citizens feel reassured by social protection, and if the EU can promote social investment and solidarity among member states.

Nyligen presenterade EU en undersökning som visar att svenskarna är bland de mest trygga och optimistiska i Europa. Kan detta påverka den politiska debatten under valåret? Sverige är tillsammans med Danmark, Österrike, Finland och Nederländerna de  länder i Europa där invånarna känner sig mest tillfreds med livet. 85 % av svenskarna har en positiv framtidstro enligt en undersökning om livskvalité som Eurofound, dvs europeiska institutet för för förbättring av levands- och arbetsvillkor, gjort. Europos gyvenimo ir darbo sąlygų gerinimo fondo („Eurofound“), trišalės ES agentūros, kaupiančios ir analizuojančios žinias socialinės ir darbo politikos srityje, vertinimu, nepaisant ilgametės grėsmingos statistikos, valstybė iki šiol nesiėmė priemonių padėčiai keisti.Anne Grimsrud iš Norvegijos viešojo sektoriaus profsąjungos negali sulaikyti juoko sužinojusi, kad Lietuvoje darbuotojo gali būti pareikalauta savo algos dydį laikyti paslaptyje. Norvegijoje kiekvienas pilietis gali patikrinti, kiek uždirba ir kiek mokesčių sumoka bet kuris kitas žmogus. Kol nebuvo interneto, kasmet buvo išleidžiamos specialios knygos su atvirais duomenimis apie visų ir kiekvieno pajamas. „Mes įsitikinome, kad skaidrumas apsimoka“, – sako A. Grimsrud.Japonija – šalis, kur svarbu hierarchija ir ritualai, tačiau pagal žmonių pajamas tai viena lygiausių pasaulio valstybių. Čia nieko nestebina, kad stambios įmonės savininkas į darbą vyksta viešuoju transportu, o jo atlyginimas nedaug skiriasi nuo vidutinio darbuotojo algos. Veikia specialios įsidarbinimo programos pagyvenusiems žmonėms. „Visuomenė yra tam, kad rūpintumės vieni kitais“, – sako baleto solistė Haruka Ohno.Į atskirtį žmones Lietuvoje stumia ne tik materialinis skurdas, bet ir kiti nepritekliai – nelygybė sveikatos apsaugoje ir švietime, socialinės rūpybos spragos ir tinkamo būsto stygius, vieša panieka tam tikroms žmonių grupėms ir jų teisių nepaisymas.Pensilvanijos universiteto (JAV) mokslininkų atliktas tyrimas rodo, jog neturtingose bendruomenėse veikiančios kultūros ir meno institucijos gerina žmonių sveikatą, saugumą ir savijautą.
