What the Riff?!?
1968 - September: Aretha Franklin "Aretha in Paris"

What the Riff?!?

Aretha Franklin got her start at an early age in Gospel music.  As the granddaughter of Gospel great Mahalia Jackson and the daughter of a prominent Baptist preacher, Franklin was heard on her father's "gospel caravan" tours at the age of twelve.  By the time she became an adult in 1960 she had decided that she wanted to go into more pop music, and moved to New York for this purpose.  She signed a deal with Columbia Records, in 1960, but her career would not really take off until moving to Atlantic Records in 1966.  By 1968 she was considered by many to be the most successful singer in the nation, and already crowned the "Queen of Soul."Franklin toured outside the US for the first time in late April 1968 through May 1968.  She performed in Paris on May 7, 1968, and this concert would be released as the live album Aretha in Paris in the fall of 1968.  It was Franklin's second live album, and the first for Atlantic Records where most of her hits were recorded. Some have criticized the backing band as not up to the task of supporting Franklin.  However, this album captures Franklin at the top of her game at a time when she was cranking out some of the biggest hits of her career.  It would be difficult for any supporting band to keep up, particularly one assembled for an overseas tour.  Regardless, this is a great album to explore as a snapshot of Aretha Franklin at the height of success.Lynch brings us a high energy live soul album from the Queen of Soul in her prime for today's podcast. (I Can't Get No) SatisfactionThis Rolling Stones cover is the lead-off track to the album and to the concert.  The Stones had released this song in 1965, and it had become their first number 1 song in the States.  Franklin takes the tempo up for this cover.(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural WomanCarole King and Gerry Goffin wrote this song for Franklin based on an idea from producer Jerry Wexler.  It originally appeared on Franklin's album "Lady Soul", and went to number 8 on the U.S. charts.  It would make history when it hit the UK charts a week after Franklin's death in 2018, 51 years after the single was first released. (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been GoneThe original single for this live song was released on the "Lady Soul" album, and reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  This song was written by Franklin and her then-husband Teddy White. The studio version of this song utilized the talents of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, who were flown in from Alabama to record in a New York City studio.Chain of FoolsSongwriter Don Covay wrote this song in his youth, and presented it to producer Jerry Wexler as a song for Otis Redding.  Wexler decided to have Franklin record it instead of Redding.  It was a big hit, taking the number 1 slot on the R&B charts for four weeks, number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and delivering Franklin a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television comedy show “Laugh In”This sketch comedy show would capture a lot of American counter-culture of the time from Tiny Tim to "sock it to me!" STAFF PICKS:Ride My See Saw by the Moody BluesWayne kicks off the staff picks with a psychedelic song from the second Moody Blues album, "In Search of the Lost Chord."  The song is about leaving school and finding that the world isn't what you thought it would be.  On the album, the song is preceded by a spoken word introduction called "Departure."Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie C. RileyRob's staff pick is a storytelling song written by Tom T. Hall about a widow named Mrs. Johnson and her tangle with the PTA.  When her teenage daughter received a note from the Harper Valley PTA criticizing the way she is living, Mrs. Johnson attends the next meeting and reveals some indiscretions of the other PTA members.Light My Fire by Jose FelicianoBruce features an acoustic cover of the Doors hit single with a Latin twist.  Jose Feliciano is best known for the Christmas song "Feliz Navidad," but this Puerto Rican artist also had a hit with this cover that peaked at number 3 on in late summer 1968.  His album "Feliciano!" is a selection of acoustic cover songs, and his most successful one.  He won "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" at the 1969 Grammy Awards for this cover.Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty SpringfieldLynch closes out the staff picks with a song that writers John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins wrote with Aretha Franklin in mind.  When Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler heard it, he thought it would be a good fit for Dusty Springfield who was recording her "Dusty in Memphis" album at the time.  INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:And I Love Her by Jose FelicianoWe double up on the Latin acoustic stylings of Feliciano as this Beatles cover takes us out of this week's podcast.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Newly launched Kilkenny Gift Card to drive tourism, corporate rewards and footfall in the region

Driving tourism, enabling corporate rewards and locking spend into the area are key aims for a newly launched gift card in Kilkenny. The Kilkenny Gift Card replaces the paper Kilkenny Gift Vouchers introduced in 2012 by Kilkenny Chamber, which have generated over €1.3 million in sales to date. A collaboration between Kilkenny Chamber and Kilkenny County Council, the new gift card is Mastercard backed allowing recipients to spend with multiple retailers, eateries, attractions, venues and service businesses in the region, with the balance automatically updated. Hotels and accommodation providers are also accepting the new gift card. Colin Ahern is the general manager at the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel and said: "The Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel is a 4 star city centre hotel with a restaurant, leisure club and bar. We've been a part of the gift voucher programme since the start and are looking forward to the new physical and digital Kilkenny Gift Card because it will be a lot easier for people to use and as a result, I think a lot more people will partake in it. It takes away the worries that people feel about using paper vouchers such as how to get change and they have the option of a physical Gift Card or a digital e-card. It's seamless. "Tourism is a €180 million industry in Kilkenny, and we need to increase that further. The new Kilkenny Gift Card will absolutely facilitate tourism because it allows people to try many different experiences in one visit, from shopping to eating out and staying over. As well as driving tourism, the gift card will encourage people to shop local and spend local. Brand Kilkenny is so important to us as a business and the Kilkenny Gift Card reinforces the brand." Kilkenny retailers are welcoming the new card. Martin Costello is director of Murphy Jewellers and said the new gift card offers enhanced choice, ease and support for local: "We all like to support local when we can and the benefit of the new Kilkenny Gift Card is that it's a local option where the money stays in Kilkenny and supports local businesses. There's also a lot more choice for recipients and unlike the paper vouchers which didn't offer change, people can spend as they like with the balance on the card automatically updated. "It makes a huge difference when people support local. Online is at the forefront of many buying decisions now, and to be able to offer a local gift card that is easy to use for customers and businesses is hugely beneficial. And when people receive the gift card, it will encourage them to explore more of what's on offer in Kilkenny." The Kilkenny Gift Card can also be used in a practical way with service based businesses including Marble City Fuels. Owner of Marble City Fuels Colin Ahern said: "We've been in business for 16 years. The Chamber voucher has been a fantastic initiative to keep money local and we've noticed a dramatic increase in people using their vouchers to buy fuel over the last few years. Any initiative that promotes and keeps money local has to be supported. I think the new physical and digital gift card Kilkenny Gift Card is a positive step, giving more opportunity to measure impact. It will also encourage younger people to support local. "The fact that the Kilkenny Gift Card can be used on practical items as well as many other things is very important. For Kilkenny employers, there is a huge emphasis on ways to keep money local and the gift card guarantees the money stays local. If an employee receives the gift card for Christmas, a €400-€500 spend on fuel will cover their fuel for 2-3 months, which is hugely beneficial for them, particularly in current times when people may have challenges around finances. The new Kilkenny Gift Card ticks all the boxes." John Hurley is chief executive at Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce and said the card will make support for local easier for all users: "The Kilkenny Gift Card is a gift card for locals, organisations and tourists alike which is easy to both buy and sp...

There is no way of knowing how many lives John Hurley saved last week. There is no way to know how many people an unhinged shooter would have eventually killed after he cowardly executed an officer who had done nothing wrong. We can never really how many lives John Hurley was able to save in Arvada, but we do know that he loved people, perhaps even more than he loved himself. Hurley did not know the race of anyone involved when he heroically acted that day; he did not know what religion or social clubs anyone was involved in. He was not selectively trying to help anyone. He wanted to help everyone. Hurley did not even think before he grabbed his gun and sprang into action after hearing several rounds fired outside. He simply grabbed his gun, identified the shooter and took action. He was rewarded by police with an untimely death. Hurley's loved ones, needless to say, are quite upset by this. The criminal Hurley took out was likely looking for more police officers to kill because he passed up several passersby and was seen heading toward a squad car after his initial act. So, we do know that John Hurley saved police officers that day. We do know that without a doubt. We also know that, after screwing up the situation, the police ran some fake investigation into the incident to try to pass the buck. But the buck was too big to be passed this time. Hurley was not a black lives matter activists, nor was he an antifa member, and his criminal record is spotless. Hurley was your typical red blooded American patriot, yet he was automatically targeted and killed by police. Of course the police department has give its usual talk on the "stresses" of the job, that anyone would have acted the same in that situation, that it was just another accident. How much longer are we expected to accept such ridiculous responses? Officers are supposed to be trained to react to criminal behavior. Shooting a mass shooter in order to save lives is not criminal behavior; it is intelligent, which the police, more and more, are failing to be. Hurley should not have been killed that day and calling him a hero does not change that fact. There should be repercussions for this; arrests should be made. We cannot allow a good person such as Hurley to be chalked up as just another accident by police investigators. If we continue to ignore police negligence, how long will it be before the Breona Taylors and George Flyods of the world become the likes of you and I? Do you really think the defund the police movement is solely about race when we are now seeing our white brothers and sisters murdered just as we have seen our black and brown brothers and sisters murdered? Do you really believe that, if I was only interested in furthering the rights of people of color, that I would even cover this story? The problems with the police institution range from racism to downright authoritarianism. Let us not forget that there has been an uptick in all police shootings, though blacks have received the brunt end of this idiocy, white people are not immune. All that is required is catching the wrong cop on the wrong day and the chalk lines will be drawn, whether you are black or white. It is all well and good to pretend that more police are the answer, that having more cops will somehow make us safer; it is easy to admit that if you disregard stories such as this. But how much longer will you be able to do that before this whole ridiculous system comes crashing down? How many more cops do you need to see in court before your realize that defund the police was always about making our communities safer? My guess is there will never be enough. I do not have high hopes for the future of a nation that pays officers to murder good samaritans. I do not have much hope for a nation who reduces real systemic problems to petty political debates that only end up making the problems worse. Give the police more money if you are so inclined; but the blood will be on your hands. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/morecontentplease/support

Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Thursday June 24th.   Today - The housing crisis is worse than ever in many resort towns. In fact, a new survey found that the vast majority of high country residents believe it's become a severe problem.   But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today, we take you back to June 24, 1889 when Telluride's San Miguel Valley Bank was robbed. Three armed men had overpowered the employees and confiscated more than $20,000. One newspaper called it “one of the most daring pieces of robbery recorded in criminal history”. Ultimately the bank's shareholders covered the loss.   Now, our feature story.   Mountain communities in Colorado have long struggled with housing, but the affordability crisis is worse than it's ever been in many resort towns. Workers in Crested Butte have threatened to strike while local leaders in Frisco have talked about declaring a local emergency. And a new survey of 4,700 high country residents found just about everyone believes housing availability and prices are “severe problems” for mountain towns. Advocates say it should be a wake-up call for local officials. Colorado Sun reporters Jason Blevins and Thy Vo talk about what's behind the high country affordable housing crisis.   To read more of Jason's reporting on mountain communities, go to coloradosun.com.    And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today:   The first draft of Colorado's revised congressional district maps dropped Wednesday afternoon and the knives are already out. Because the state's population increased more than 14 percent in the last decade, Colorado gets a new U.S. representative. The new 8th Congressional District is centered in the fast growing north metro Denver suburbs in order to capture a large block of Latino voters. But in southern Colorado, political activists are calling the maps racist because they placed many Latino voters in solidly Republican districts.   Arvada police still have not said much about the shooting Monday in Olde Town Square that left three people dead. But a man working in a store across from where the shooting happened says one of his customers ran out of Arvada Army Navy Surplus with his gun and shot the suspect. Police identified the man as John Hurley. Hurley also was killed, but police have not said who fired on him. Police officer Gordon Beesley died in the shooting, as did the suspect, identified as Ronald Troyke.   John McAfee, the creator of McAfee antivirus software, was found dead in his jail cell near Barcelona in an apparent suicide Wednesday, hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition to the United States to face tax charges punishable by decades in prison. McAfee built many palatial homes with the fortune he made when he sold his company, including a 280-acre compound/yoga retreat near Woodland Park, that was foreclosed on in 2007.    For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Wednesday June 23rd.   Today - Rural Colorado communities have experienced limited access to broadband for years -- but the issue was front and center during the pandemic. Now, the state is using funds from the American Rescue Plan address it.   But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today, we take you back to June 23rd, 1947 when Governor W Lee Knous pressed a button to start pumping water through the Colorado - Big Thompson Project's tunnels. It's one of Colorado's largest, most complicated, and expensive water relocation efforsts.    Now, our feature story.   Coronavirus put the spotlight on an issue that has dogged rural Colorado communities for years -- access to broadband internet. People living on tribal lands are among the worst off. Now the state is using money from the American Rescue Plan to beef up funding for broadband projects with the hope of eventually getting the state's rural areas to 100 percent coverage. Colorado Sun reporters Tamara Chuang and Thy Vo talk about the state's latest moves to improve internet access.   To read more of Tamara's reporting about broadband access, go to coloradosun.com.   And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today:   Arvada police say Officer Gordon Beesley, who was killed in a shooting in Olde Town Arvada Monday, was targeted in an ambush-style attack because he was wearing his uniform. Police Chief Link Strate said the suspected shooter, whose name hasn't been released, expressed hatred toward law enforcement. The other person killed by the suspect, 40-year-old John Hurley of Golden, was described as a good Samaritan who tried to intervene.    Preliminary congressional district maps will be released late Tuesday afternoon at a meeting of Colorado's Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission. It's the public's first look at where a new 8th Congressional district might be located, and comes ahead of a roadshow of public hearings hosted by the commission in July to get public input. The maps will be updated again once the U.S. Census Bureau releases the final census data in August.   Two Colorado mobile home communities were sold to resident cooperatives on Monday. The high-dollar transactions for a park near Boulder and one near Durango are the first under a new state law that gives residents the first crack when a mobile home park is put on the market. A state database that tracks mobile home park listings reports more than 900 mobile home parks are either on the market or have changed hands in the last several months   A new law signed by Gov. Jared Polis aims to make it easier for former prison inmates who worked on fire crews to get jobs in the industry after they've served their time. While the prisoners selected to work as firefighters are often model inmates, their criminal convictions can be a barrier to getting firefighting jobs when they are released. The law says that people with felony convictions are eligible to work as wildland firefighters in the state Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and that the division is encouraged to hire former prison inmates who have worked on fire crews.    For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Prayer to Know More of Jesus and These Blessings Ephesians 1:15-23 August 16, 2020 I. Introduction: A. We live in a day and age where out of the sincerity of our hearts to live out God’s truth and not just study it the first question we ask ourselves is, ”What do I need to do with this truth?” 1. We have been learning some of the most amazing truths in the Bible over the past number of months, blessing upon blessing that God has given to us in Jesus Christ! 2. This morning Paul answers for us the first thing we need to do with these truths, and what he does with them may surprise many of us. Actually too often, we skip over this crucial first step in the process as we rush to put God’s Word into practice in our lives. B. We find the answer to this starting in v15 of chapter 1 as he says, “for this reason” 1. Simply he is connecting what follows with what has gone before. He tells us the very reason he is going to do what he does next is because of all these blessings in Christ we just learned about in v3-14. 2. Just like v3-14 was all one long sentence closely tying it all together so v15- 23 is also just one sentence closely tying it all together. C. Before I read, let me tell you what the heart of this section says so you can watch for it as I read – simply he prays for them to know more of Jesus and these blessings! 1. The structure to the prayer is as follows: a) V17 he prays that God would give them a fuller, more practical and more intimate knowledge of Jesus b) In v18 -19a he prays that God would enlighten our hearts to fully see and grasp three specific blessing God gives us – His calling, His inheritance and His power c) Then in v 19b-23 he shows us three ways in which His power towards us right now is manifested and in agreement with the power that was manifested in Jesus when He was resurrected, when He was ascended into heaven and seated at God’s right hand and finally when He gave Him as head over all things pertaining to the church! 2. Watch for these as I read D. Paul’s first response to all these amazing blessings, the first thing he does is to pray! Pray that we would know more of Jesus the one whom all these blessings are in and that we would know more of the blessings themselves! • Before I jump into the text I just want to say a few things about II. Prayer in general A. We have learned before that prayer is the means to receiving in God’s kingdom. 1. Often as a last resort we say to people in tough times, when there is nothing else we can do we say, “All I can do is pray!” 2. Actually prayer should be the first thing we do and the best thing we can do as prayer allows us to put one hand on the person and their situation and the other hand on God and bring the two together! 3. Prayer is the first thing that Paul does with these amazing life-changing truths! It really is the first thing we should do B. We have been talking lately in staff about the restarting of our ministries here at MVC in this unique day of restrictions and MVC scattered all over the place. 1. As we look at the way that Jesus did ministry we have been reminded how Jesus started His ministry and daily met with the Father in prayer. 2. Jesus said He did nothing of Himself; His teachings and words were not His own, His works were not His own, His will was not His own but they all were from and initiated by the Father. 3. If we do not go to the Father first and regularly in prayer then at best we will be working out of our best ideas or copying and pasting what others are doing rather than hearing directly in a life changing and empowering way what God wants us to do. 4. What we learn from this passage is that God does not want His truths from the Bible just to go from our heads to our feet and hands but rather from our heads, through our hearts where it is anointed by the Spirit then out through our hands and feet! C. Finally, we see in this passage that Paul prays God’s word and truth. 1. So often, we will read God’s word when we end with our prayer time, when we begin to pray for our needs, friends, and ministry but never breathe a prayer about what we just learned in God’s word. 2. It is like sitting at the breakfast table with Kim and she talks to me about something on her heart she wants me to know then I respond by telling her about what happened in the ballgame yesterday! There is no connection and no two way conversation 3. Here Paul is praying about what we just learned in God’s word – to know more about Jesus, the one in whom are all these blessings and to know more of the blessings themselves in a life changing way! 4. This is the prayer we all should be praying for each other and ourselves in these days. • So the rest of today my goal is simply to introduce you to this prayer and then the next two weeks we will look into it more specifically. In v17 Paul prays that we would III.Know more of Jesus A. The key word here is knowledge – it is the Greek word “epignosis” which indicates a personal, intimate, and progressively growing knowledge of Jesus! B. As I reread this verse note three things: 1. This is something that God gives, something that originates with God, not something we work out by our efforts 2. He wants them to know more in a practical way – that is what wisdom and revelation basically means 3. Then finally that growing, practical knowledge is in the particular area it is in. The area of a personal, experiential and intimate relationship with Jesus 4. Read C. This same idea is pictured and the same word is used in Matthew 16 for us to get a picture of what this is like. 1. Context, Jesus had been on the scene and doing amazing miracles and saying things that amazed some and angered others. 2. Those whom He angered said He was from the Devil and those who were amazed knew He was someone very special as they thought he was John the Baptist raised from the dead or Elijah or Jeremiah or one of the other prophets raised from the dead. 3. Then Jesus said this to Peter a) Read Matthew 16:15-17 4. Like we see in this passage a growing more intimate, experiential and practical knowledge of Jesus is not something that comes from man’s efforts, observations, or even being around Jesus, like so many of them were. Rather it is a supernatural revelation – an unfolding to us by God where God discloses this to us in the core of our being! D. This is not just head knowledge or even just Bible knowledge about Jesus but it is the truths of the Bible coming to life within my heart by the power of the Holy Spirit! 1. This is not just reading, studying, memorizing and knowing the big idea the twenty third psalm that teaches us that God, specifically Jesus, is our personal shepherd but rather it is the daily experience in the grind of real life on the streets where we experience Jesus shepherding us through every situation we face. 2. It is not just knowing about Jesus in my head but rather knowing Jesus deep within the core of my being in a life giving, life changing way! • The second part of this prayer is that we would IV.Know more of these blessings A. The key word here is know – it is the Greek word “oida” which indicates an I see something and I get the significance of what that is. It is the knowing from observation but knowing in such a way that you grasp the significance of what you know! B. Let me reread v18-19a C. Again, we see these are things he does not just want us to have head knowledge about but he wants it to go to the core of our being, so they flow out of our lives as naturally as blood flows out of our hearts! When the Bible speaks of the heart it is speaking basically of the inner person, that part of us that lies deep within us, the immaterial part of our lives 1. In the Bible, it speaks of the heart as a place where we imagine, think and reason, a place where we have desires, affections and grief, a place where our conscience and will is, a place where faith resides. 2. Here it talks about the heart having eyes – figuratively speaking that means the ability to see. D. But like everyone who sees we need to have light to see – so his prayer is that the eyes of our hearts would be enlightened. That the Holy Spirit would shine light down in our hearts so we can see and know these wonderful blessings that God gives us! V. Application A. So everything that follows are works of God deep within our hearts that come in the context of prayer so that God’s Word would become a living reality in and through us! B. So from the core of our beings we would know and experience deeply the hope that comes from His calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints and what is the surpassing greatness of His power towards us. Close in prayer – John Hurley
