JJO's Discover New Music Podcast

It's kind of like when Prince changed his name to the Artist formerly known as Prince. This week's guest on Discover New Music is Amanda Lyberg of Eva Under Fire. The band's second studio album "Villainous" is a deeply personal record and even heavier than the first. Lyberg talked about being able to be more open and honest with her lyrics and how the maturity of the band compared to the first album helped make "Villainous" exactly what they wanted it to be. She also shared the amazing experience of working with Maria Brink and how jaw-droppingly awesome it was to hear her vocals for the record's title track for the first time. As always a quick round of Rapid Fire is played...with a whale penis.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Detroit rock quintet Eva Under Fire are about to unleash their most ambitious, vulnerable, and absolutely crushing record to date with Villainous, dropping on July 10, 2026, via Better Noise Music. If you thought their 2022 debut Love, Drugs & Misery pushed boundaries, then strap yourselves in, because this new 13-track monster completely redraws the map. It is a gritty, cinematic concept album built from the ashes of self-destruction and forged into a massive, heavy anthem of reclaiming power.Led by frontwoman Amanda Lyberg - who masterfully balances her dual life as a licensed therapist and a powerhouse rock vocalist - the band dives straight into the darkest corners of human emotion. They have traded compliance for complete defiance. Nowhere is this more obvious than on the blistering title track, featuring a monumental vocal pairing with Maria Brink of In This Moment. It is laced with late-'90s industrial crunch combined with a fierce, modern punch that proves standing up for your truth sometimes means looking like the bad guy to everyone you left behind. From the explosive opening salvos of Awakening to the unapologetic, venomous delivery of Murder Scene, Villainous is an unflinching look at grief, identity, and hard-won self-acceptance. This isn't just standard radio rock; it's a statement of absolute confidence from a band that has already amassed over 100 million streams and dominated the Billboard charts.HEAVY caught up with the phenomenal Amanda Lyberg to dissect the creative chaos behind the record."It's an exciting time," she enthused. "It feels like a long time coming. We spent two years writing this album, which feels like forever when you're so focused on playing live shows. It feels really great to finally be at a point where we're releasing it and getting back into the swing of things and seeing all our hard work come to fruition."We ask Amanda to tell us what Eva Under Fire were going for musically with Villainous."Album one felt great, but it felt like there were a lot of people telling us what we were supposed to be doing," she sighed. "So this time around, it was way more important for us to say no, we're gonna throw out the rule book and do what we wanna do. We wanna say what we wanna say. We wanna say it how we wanna say it. And I was very excited that my guys were all happy, it was going to be more of an Amanda kind of lyrics on this album. I feel like it was more poetic; I feel like it was darker and grittier and had a lot of honest themes. It felt more like a self-discovery journey and a lot more authentic than the first record. We really felt like we were stepping into our own writing this album."In the full interview, we explored the singles released and how they represent the album, the more personal nature of the lyrics and how Villainous differs from their debut album Love, Drugs And Misery. Amanda talks about her vocation as a professional therapist and how the music world combined with that side of her personality in the creative process.Amanda also spoke about the ambiguity in the album title, as well as the charity that Eva Under Fire donated portions of their takings to for the title track. We talked about the band's transition from being a garage band to now playing stadiums and how that has impacted dynamics along the way, their current massive tour and the chances of it coming to Australia and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Ugh. I drank too much yesterday. I gotta stop drinking on weekdays. Needless to say, I'm here…but barely. We started things off this morning with an update on the plane/helicopter collision from the other day, a blood pressure medicine recall, a new specialty license plate in Wisconsin, and the star of "Emilia Perez" issued an apology for some old social media posts. In sports, the Bucks wrap up a 4-game road trip tonight in San Antonio, the Badgers are at Northwestern tomorrow afternoon, there's been some serious allegations made about Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, and Alexander Ovechkin got a little closer to Gretzky's record last night. Elsewhere in sports, Terry Rozier is being investigated for some unusual bets made on his games, and Dana White issued a strong statement about Bryce Mitchell's recent comments on a podcast. Have you heard about the recent "Stick Tok" phenomenon? It's a scene, man. Doc joined us for the first Racing Report of the NASCAR season thanks to County Materials in Holmen, and we let you know what's on TV this weekend, what's going to be in theaters, and told you about some new music releases. Cool story about an Ohio State fan that's celebrating their national championship by handing out some scholarships, and a dog that's been missing for EIGHT YEARS was recently reunited with it's owner. We ran a few clips from our interview with Eva from "Eva Under Fire" this morning! You can check out the entire interview here. Tomorrow is February first, so we took a look ahead at some of the things to look forward to in the upcoming month. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a 94 year-old woman who was caught doing 106mph on an interstate, a #FloridaWoman who got busted for throwing a brick through her ex-husband's window, another woman who is divorcing her husband after she found out that he was hunting for Bigfoot with his ex-girlfriend, and a woman who's facing jail time after bombarding another woman with farting videos. It's finally here! Friday…AND…the Riverfront Revolt at the La Crosse Center! See you there later today for Asking Alexandria, Starset, & Eva Under Fire. On the show this morning, we started things off with the latest on Wednesday's school shooting in Nashville, President Trump's executive order to declassify documents related to the assassinations of JFK & MLK, a recall on a couple of Ford models, the Packer tailgate tour making it's way around the state in April, and a weather reporter who got fired after criticizing Elon Musk's gesture. In sports, the Bucks beat up on the Heat last night, the Badgers play on Sunday, the AFC & NFC Championship games are also on Sunday, and Alexander Ovechkin inched closer to Wayne Gretzky's record again last night. Elsewhere in sports, Novak Djokovic retired after his first set yesterday after an injury, and a Nebraska fan hit a putt that won him a brand new Porsche! We told you what's on TV this weekend and what's in theaters, and we also discussed some unusual facts about the human body. The "blizzard" in the south this week has led to an opportunity to help the homeless community there, and a contractor in North Carolina has been doing a lot of free work to help people there rebuild after the devastation left after Hurricane Helene. Would you try a pizza-flavored cereal? Well, now you can! And in other food-related news, Costco is looking to hire someone to try all of their Super Bowl snacks. ICYMI, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to sell some of the snow from the field at the Linc during their win over the Rams, and yes…it sold out. During today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about an adult diaper "influencer", a former #FloridaCop who shot a man with his own gun, a woman who unplugged her child's monitor in the NICU so she could ask the nurse for a turkey sammich, and a guy shot an Instacart delivery driver. Only one more sleep until we rock out at the La Crosse Center with Asking Alexandria, Beartooth, Starset, Memphis May Fire, Pop Evil, & Eva Under Fire! If you don't have your tickets for the Riverfront Revolt, you can get them online here. Back into the teens today after a high of 31° yesterday & some light snow. We kicked things off with an update on the Wisconsin man who allegedly set fire to a Congressman's office, a recap of Governor Evers' State address, what was in the letter that former President Biden left for President Trump in the Resolute Desk, and if you've got TikTok installed on an old phone…you might want to list it on eBay. In sports, the Bucks/Pelicans game scheduled for last night got postponed because of the wintry weather in New Orleans, the NY Jets have hired a new head coach, the AFC & NFC Championship games are this weekend, and the Badger men's basketball team is back at home on Sunday against Nebraska. We let you know what's on TV tonight and discussed a new UFO documentary that is coming out soon. Plus, Brian now thinks that Rock is Dead after watching Pop Culture Jeopardy. A couple of heart-warming animal rescue stories including a family's pet tortoise that survived the LA wildfires, and a moose that recently fell through the ice on a frozen lake was rescued by wildlife officials. Have you seen the single serve "cheese product" packages from Velveeta? How about this face-roller from Coors Light? Have you heard about Sluggball? We talked about a Buzzfeed.com list of things that should be obsolete by 2075, and a very cool story about Bills Mafia helping a charity in Mark Andrews' name after he dropped a pass that could have tied the game between the Bills & Ravens last weekend. Office Cora joined us to talk about her life & what she's up to in the 715 this weekend. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about an argument over a remote control that ended with a stabbing, a "Mother of the Year" candidate who handcuffed her kid to an oil tank as punishment for eating too many hot dogs, and a guy who shot up a Wendy's because his fries were too cold. Singer Eva Marie and guitarist Rob Lyberg join me for this episode of Talkin' Rock w/ Meltdown. It was super cool of the guys to swing by the station and talk all things Eva Under Fire. We discussed how they got the name for the band. Rob explained the long and short of naming the band. They've had a crazy few years. We talk about their very first tour with Buckcherry, and how they were treated on that run. Eva said "They were really, really cool guys.". She compared touring to camping by saying "You don't have a lot of amenities, but if you love it, you love it.". That's a great way to look at it. The thing about this band, is that they started to percolate around the start of the lockdowns. They were stalled a little bit, like many bands, but did happen to hop on some killer tours. If you didn't know, Eva was in the movie "The  Retaliators". Eva explained how the song "Blow" made the movie, and how Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills ended up on the track. She also told the story of meeting him for the first time, a long time later.  They also have a lot going on for 2023, including a deluxe album which drops on August 4th. Eva talked about working with country artist Cody Marks on the song "Unstoppable" for the deluxe version of their album Love, Drugs & Misery.  A HUGE Thank You to Rob and Eva for coming by the studio to discuss the band and what they have going on.  -Meltdown-
