HEAVY Music Interviews
Beyond The Abyss With LEE JENNINGS From THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2025 19:19

Interview by Kris PetersThe Funeral Portrait have always been true champions for the underdog; the outcasts of society who are struggling to find their identity or be accepted in a world that is often harsh and judgmental.Their musical world is one of acceptance and unequivocal belonging, with a flair for the theatrical and a need for unity. In little over a decade, The Funeral Portrait have steadily ploughed through the ranks, loudly going about their business with an air of defiant arrogance that only comes from a band who know they have something special.Since joining forces with Better Noise Music for last year's smash hit album Greetings From Suffocate City, The Funeral Portrait have become one of the most in-demand bands on the planet, touring with Ice Nine Kills, Five Finger Death Punch, Marilyn Manson and more to solidify their obvious potential. The campaign cycle for that album began long before its release, with attention to even the smallest details providing a solid platform from which the band launched their global assault.Greetings From Suffocate City expanded the group's mythology to new heights and dimensions with invigorating, authentic, and passionate anthems. Songs like Alien, Voodoo Doll, You're So Ugly When You Cry (featuring The Used's Bert McCracken), and the title track (featuring Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills) have forced the world to stand up and notice, culminating in the release on June 13 of GREETINGS FROM SUFFOCATE CITY - FROM BEYOND THE ABYSS: DELUXE EDITION. The updated release contains 24 songs, including tracks from the CASSANOVA EP and the FROM BEYOND THE ABYSS EP, as well as the recently released versions of Holy Water feat. Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch, Hearse for Two feat. Lilith Czar and three brand new songs: Skinny Lies, Evergreen, and Lost Boy.The album that was originally released September 13, 2024 via Better Noise Music, consisted of 14 tracks of theatrical, dramatic, unapologetic, full-throated flair with guest appearances from Bert McCracken of The Used, Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills, Danny Worsnop of Asking Alexandria and Amanda Lyberg of Eva Under Fire. It was - and is - a remarkable album from a band only now starting to find their musical identity, and looks set to reach a new generation of ears with the deluxe edition on offer this week.HEAVY caught up with frontman Lee Jennings on one of his rare down days to force him to talk shop. We ask him about the response to Greetings From Suffocate City and if it was what they were hoping for."Completely, yes," he nodded. "I think at first we had been building fans along the way. So it was definitely a cool stretch at the beginning. But I think the better part is what we're building now. We're still supporting some huge tours, and it's growing every single day. Every day, we're selling copies at the merch table or online. You can go to your local record store a lot of the time and get it. And for us, it's about that growth. It's not about that direct, right when it's out, everybody's freaking out about it. To me, it's about the build. And I feel like what we're building towards is this next record that I hope that will be more that moment of like, oh, the new Funeral Portrait record is coming out. I'm very excited for that instead of right now. We're in discovery mode still now, I think, is the easiest way to say."In the full interview, Lee discussed the upcoming release of the deluxe edition of Greetings From Suffocate City - scheduled for June 13 - reflecting on the five-year journey of creating the original album, which was impacted by the pandemic and other factors. Lee expressed enthusiasm for the new songs on the deluxe edition, particularly Skinny Lies and Evergreen, which tackle personal themes and mental health, and explained the inclusion of both original and guest versions of certain tracks to showcase the band's creative evolution. We also explored the role of guest features in modern rock music, with Lee open to collaborations across genres, emphasizing a process that allows guest artists to contribute while maintaining the song's essence. We spoke about The Funeral Portrait's touring schedule, how they integrate the new songs into live performances, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Ugh. I drank too much yesterday. I gotta stop drinking on weekdays. Needless to say, I'm here…but barely. We started things off this morning with an update on the plane/helicopter collision from the other day, a blood pressure medicine recall, a new specialty license plate in Wisconsin, and the star of "Emilia Perez" issued an apology for some old social media posts. In sports, the Bucks wrap up a 4-game road trip tonight in San Antonio, the Badgers are at Northwestern tomorrow afternoon, there's been some serious allegations made about Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, and Alexander Ovechkin got a little closer to Gretzky's record last night. Elsewhere in sports, Terry Rozier is being investigated for some unusual bets made on his games, and Dana White issued a strong statement about Bryce Mitchell's recent comments on a podcast. Have you heard about the recent "Stick Tok" phenomenon? It's a scene, man. Doc joined us for the first Racing Report of the NASCAR season thanks to County Materials in Holmen, and we let you know what's on TV this weekend, what's going to be in theaters, and told you about some new music releases. Cool story about an Ohio State fan that's celebrating their national championship by handing out some scholarships, and a dog that's been missing for EIGHT YEARS was recently reunited with it's owner. We ran a few clips from our interview with Eva from "Eva Under Fire" this morning! You can check out the entire interview here. Tomorrow is February first, so we took a look ahead at some of the things to look forward to in the upcoming month. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a 94 year-old woman who was caught doing 106mph on an interstate, a #FloridaWoman who got busted for throwing a brick through her ex-husband's window, another woman who is divorcing her husband after she found out that he was hunting for Bigfoot with his ex-girlfriend, and a woman who's facing jail time after bombarding another woman with farting videos. It's finally here! Friday…AND…the Riverfront Revolt at the La Crosse Center! See you there later today for Asking Alexandria, Starset, & Eva Under Fire. On the show this morning, we started things off with the latest on Wednesday's school shooting in Nashville, President Trump's executive order to declassify documents related to the assassinations of JFK & MLK, a recall on a couple of Ford models, the Packer tailgate tour making it's way around the state in April, and a weather reporter who got fired after criticizing Elon Musk's gesture. In sports, the Bucks beat up on the Heat last night, the Badgers play on Sunday, the AFC & NFC Championship games are also on Sunday, and Alexander Ovechkin inched closer to Wayne Gretzky's record again last night. Elsewhere in sports, Novak Djokovic retired after his first set yesterday after an injury, and a Nebraska fan hit a putt that won him a brand new Porsche! We told you what's on TV this weekend and what's in theaters, and we also discussed some unusual facts about the human body. The "blizzard" in the south this week has led to an opportunity to help the homeless community there, and a contractor in North Carolina has been doing a lot of free work to help people there rebuild after the devastation left after Hurricane Helene. Would you try a pizza-flavored cereal? Well, now you can! And in other food-related news, Costco is looking to hire someone to try all of their Super Bowl snacks. ICYMI, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to sell some of the snow from the field at the Linc during their win over the Rams, and yes…it sold out. During today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about an adult diaper "influencer", a former #FloridaCop who shot a man with his own gun, a woman who unplugged her child's monitor in the NICU so she could ask the nurse for a turkey sammich, and a guy shot an Instacart delivery driver. Only one more sleep until we rock out at the La Crosse Center with Asking Alexandria, Beartooth, Starset, Memphis May Fire, Pop Evil, & Eva Under Fire! If you don't have your tickets for the Riverfront Revolt, you can get them online here. Back into the teens today after a high of 31° yesterday & some light snow. We kicked things off with an update on the Wisconsin man who allegedly set fire to a Congressman's office, a recap of Governor Evers' State address, what was in the letter that former President Biden left for President Trump in the Resolute Desk, and if you've got TikTok installed on an old phone…you might want to list it on eBay. In sports, the Bucks/Pelicans game scheduled for last night got postponed because of the wintry weather in New Orleans, the NY Jets have hired a new head coach, the AFC & NFC Championship games are this weekend, and the Badger men's basketball team is back at home on Sunday against Nebraska. We let you know what's on TV tonight and discussed a new UFO documentary that is coming out soon. Plus, Brian now thinks that Rock is Dead after watching Pop Culture Jeopardy. A couple of heart-warming animal rescue stories including a family's pet tortoise that survived the LA wildfires, and a moose that recently fell through the ice on a frozen lake was rescued by wildlife officials. Have you seen the single serve "cheese product" packages from Velveeta? How about this face-roller from Coors Light? Have you heard about Sluggball? We talked about a Buzzfeed.com list of things that should be obsolete by 2075, and a very cool story about Bills Mafia helping a charity in Mark Andrews' name after he dropped a pass that could have tied the game between the Bills & Ravens last weekend. Office Cora joined us to talk about her life & what she's up to in the 715 this weekend. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about an argument over a remote control that ended with a stabbing, a "Mother of the Year" candidate who handcuffed her kid to an oil tank as punishment for eating too many hot dogs, and a guy who shot up a Wendy's because his fries were too cold. This week, we're scratching The Itch for an intermission! When we last left our heroes, The Itch was at halfway through recapping our Shiprocked adventure. Eva Under Fire had an adventure of their own at this point in the story, so this week vocalist and part-time Itch co-host Eva Marie joins us to discuss Shiprocked from the artists' perspective. We'll hear tales of soundchecks gone awry, wholesome singalongs, and staying ready so you don't have to get ready. Plus, Eva discusses her new collaboration with Lyell and Hyro the Hero, and The Itch discovers the real princess in Eva Under Fire... Hint: It's not her. We'll be back next week to (maybe) wrap up this year's Shiprocked coverage. In the meantime, if you're in the Detroit area on March 1st, Eva Under Fire and The Itch would love to see you at the premiere of Eva's film, My Rockstar, at The Crofoot. If you or someone you loved have experienced the pain of addiction, this night is for you to feel seen and loved. Singer Eva Marie and guitarist Rob Lyberg join me for this episode of Talkin' Rock w/ Meltdown. It was super cool of the guys to swing by the station and talk all things Eva Under Fire. We discussed how they got the name for the band. Rob explained the long and short of naming the band. They've had a crazy few years. We talk about their very first tour with Buckcherry, and how they were treated on that run. Eva said "They were really, really cool guys.". She compared touring to camping by saying "You don't have a lot of amenities, but if you love it, you love it.". That's a great way to look at it. The thing about this band, is that they started to percolate around the start of the lockdowns. They were stalled a little bit, like many bands, but did happen to hop on some killer tours. If you didn't know, Eva was in the movie "The  Retaliators". Eva explained how the song "Blow" made the movie, and how Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills ended up on the track. She also told the story of meeting him for the first time, a long time later.  They also have a lot going on for 2023, including a deluxe album which drops on August 4th. Eva talked about working with country artist Cody Marks on the song "Unstoppable" for the deluxe version of their album Love, Drugs & Misery.  A HUGE Thank You to Rob and Eva for coming by the studio to discuss the band and what they have going on.  -Meltdown-

This week, we're scratching The Itch for Nothing More than a good show! And not only did we get one, but we got a couple of nice dad jokes to boot. On June 9, KC, Dan, and Dan's wife Hannah visited The Pageant in St. Louis to see Nothing More, Atreyu, and Eva Under Fire. It was a memorable experience for a number of reasons you'll quickly discover. In the meantime, Aaron missed three chances to see Atreyu in under two weeks. He is shamefaced. Also, shout out to Asking Alexandria, who had to drop off the tour, but has put out back-to-back quality albums in their own right. For more on Eva Under Fire, check out episodes 73 and 80. For more on Atreyu, check out episode 59. For more on Nothing More, keep listening.
