We are delighted to have the great Koreen Pagano join the podcast for the furthering conversation on skills. We get Koreen's perspective and definition of skills.  Matt alludes to the earlier LDA Podcast, The “What the Skills” Episode with Paul Kirschner, as well as the research work he did with John Sweller and Richard Clark published in their article: Kirschner, P.A., Sweller, J., & Clark, R.E. (2006). Why minimal guidance during instruction does not work: An analysis of the failure of constructivist discovery, problem-based, experiential, and inquiry-based teaching. Educational Psychologist. 41(2), 75-86. In the episode, we dig into whether one can teach, and how one can teach, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and even tease the subject of teaching leadership. The debate really gets playfully heated when they talk about critical thinking. Clark uses the famous phrase, “yes… and…” Matt references the great improv in business practitioner, Kat Koppett. Her first book, Training to Imagine is a great source to go into yes, anding… in more depth. Matt references evolutionary skills and brings up the references from Sweller: Sweller, J. (2016). Cognitive Load Theory: What We Learn and How We Learn. In M. Spector, B. Lockee, & M. Childress (Eds.), Learning, design, and technology (pp. 1–28). Springer. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-17727-4_50-1 And Geary Geary, D. C. (2008). An evolutionarily informed education science. Educational Psychologist, 43(4), 179–195. https://doi.org/10.1080/00461520802392133 We discuss what it means to master skills, and develop automation. We also explore how to assess whether a person has a skill or the potential to develop a skill. We debate transferability and whether skills— especially complex skills need be taught within a contextual domain. Matt argues yes. Koreen argues no. Clark argues “It depends.” They also debate whether, and how much, talent plays into skill development. Heck… is talent even a thing? The big argument centers around Carnegie Hall and playing golf! And of course, Anders Ericsson is a part of the conversation. Ericsson, K. A., & Charness, N. (1994). Expert performance: Its structure and acquisition. American Psychologist, 49: 725–747. Matt referenced the Human Development expert, Richard Lerner. Koreen references the hostage negotiator, Chris Voss and his book, Never Split the Difference. And we even debate how transferrable the skill of game design is! And we talked about so much more!!! Of course, we run out of time because we had so much fun chatting with Koreen… that we didn't get to Best and Worst! Next time… and Koreen will be back! More about Koreen: Koreen Pagano, Chief Product Officer at Thrive Learning and founder of Isanno, is a globally recognized product executive with deep expertise in learning technologies, skills strategy, AI, analytics, and immersive technologies. Koreen has held product leadership roles at companies including Lynda.com, LinkedIn, D2L, Degreed, and Wiley. Koreen previously founded Tandem Learning in 2008, where she pioneered immersive learning through virtual worlds, games, and simulations. She has taught graduate courses at Harrisburg University and provided advisory and consulting services to a range of tech companies in the corporate learning, VR, and K12 education markets. Linkedin / Instagram / Thread: @thevincechan Vince, an Amazon bestselling author in career management, is a globally recognized speaker on the 'future of work.' Her unique expertise comes from a blend of being a Chicago-trained behavioral economist and the former Asia-Pacific head of a billion-dollar U.S. investment firm. Raised in Hong Kong and Canada, Vince pursued economics, followed by MBA degrees from Yale University and Chicago Booth School of Business. Her professional acumen is further solidified by U.S. CPA and CFA® credentials. Vince's vibrant 15-plus-year corporate career has spanned global financial markets, with significant roles at S&P Global Ratings, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and TCW Asset Management. Among her standout achievements are raising $1 billion in collaboration with 'King of Bonds' Jeffrey Gundlach and Goldman Sachs, and facilitating over 100 multi-million-dollar funding transactions for Top 50 global banks. Separately, her contributions have been recognized with accolades such as Forbes China's Outstanding Overseas Returnee in 2015 and Yale School of Management's Outstanding Volunteer Leadership award in 2018. A decade ago, Vince boldly transitioned from finance to the 'future of work' sector. Since then, she has actively modernized the workforce, working in both traditional and digital education spheres. In Beijing, her collaboration with Renmin University of China (China's Top 10) yielded a popular career guide. She further supported career advancement for the Schwarzman Scholars. In Shanghai with New Oriental (NYSE: EDU), she designed and taught business school preparatory programs to thousands of students. In Hong Kong, she co-developed an entrepreneurship program inspired by Chicago Booth's Polsky Center. Vince's impact extends to global stages like SXSW, ASU-GSV, Web Summit, and RISE conference. There, she has shared insights alongside leaders from Degreed, Google, and Udemy, driving forward conversations on workforce development in the tech era. Her personal motto, "own your change, or be changed," reflects her resilience through 18 career transitions and six major economic crises. Vince's journey through three burnouts has become a testament to her strength, showcasing her ability to thrive through transformative challenges. Beyond her professional pursuits, Vince is a WSET certified wine connoisseur, appreciating richly structured wines. She also enjoys playing tennis, constructing intricate Lego models, and delving into deep stories across various media. Her favorites include classics like “The Godfather,” “The Sound of Music,” “Sherlock,” Vivaldi's “The Four Seasons,” as well as literary works like “On Tyranny,” “The Little Prince,” and the “Harry Potter” series. Vince Chan's Career Journey and Future Plans Vince Chan shared his professional background and future plans. He has been in the corporate and financial world for over 15 years and has worked for major institutions in Hong Kong, Asia, and the US. Post the credit crisis, he moved into entrepreneurship and became an author, writing two books for young professionals. He also worked as a leadership coach in China and Hong Kong. Vince Chan expressed his interest in setting up an investment fund for new ventures and his desire to make a greater contribution to society, especially in the areas of education technology and future skills. He also shared his personal struggles, including career changes, economic crises, and mental health issues, but emphasized his resilience and current thriving state. Resilience, Adaptability, and Future of Work Vince Chan highlighted the importance of resilience and adaptability in facing work challenges, including burnout. Michael D. Levitt shared his personal experiences with mental issues and discussed the future of work and skills in the context of AI and emerging technologies. Michael suggested an introduction between Vince Chan and a career individual seeking advice. The conversation concluded with Vince Chan discussing the significant changes brought about by the current global crisis, emphasizing the need to adapt to these unprecedented changes. Emphasizing Individual Control and Learning Amidst Covid-19 Vince Chan emphasized the importance of individuals taking control of their own change, rather than being forced to adapt to changes imposed by others. He highlighted the need for continuous learning, especially in the areas of digital and human-centric skills. However, he also pointed out that many education technology platforms merely recycle existing content without focusing on skills such as career development, navigation, and reinvention. Michael D. Levitt agreed with Vince Chan's points, noting the traumatic impacts of forced changes like lockdowns and border closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Embracing Change and Control in Career and Life Michael D. Levitt emphasized the importance of taking control of one's own life and career, highlighting the dangers of stressing over things beyond our control. He encouraged people to gain exposure to different experiences, including volunteering, to broaden their skills and consider career changes. He also cautioned against rushing into the use of new technologies like AI without understanding the underlying business needs first. Vince Chan agreed with Michael's points, extending the metaphor of running one's life like a business, regardless of one's profession. The skills-based organization and skills-based hiring have been talked about for several years now. Despite this, many employers are yet to start a shift towards skills or are still at a very early stage of the process. So why is being skilled-based so important, and what are the implications for companies that haven't yet started a transition towards skills-based hiring and talent management? Is this another HR fad or a critical re-imagining of how we think about talent in a world of continued disruptive change? My guest this week is David Blake, CEO of Degreed, a skills-based learning and development technology platform. David is a passionate advocate for the advantages that skills-based organizations will have in our AI-driven future of work. In the interview, we discuss: Why is a skilled-based approach so important, and how does it translate into business success? Job titles are not the same as skills. Getting the best out of people Jailbreaking the college degree. Skills versus qualifications and experience Evolving the recruiting process to hire for skills Reskilling and upskilling Why the skills gap will continue to get bigger and bigger In demand skills Thinking differently about talent How will AI define the future of work? David Blake -- rattled in the wake of a tough standardized exam – was doing some independent research in his high school library when it dawned on him that while he was a top-notch student, he was a terrible learner. From then on, he committed to changing a system that had encouraged him to merely “jump through hoops.” Through his companies Degreed, and more recently, BookClub, Blake has sought to change how individuals and corporations alike perceive education and learning. Rather than helping employees become their best selves, he tells host Shiv Gaglani, companies historically saw education in terms of regulatory compliance, of “checking a box.” But Blake sees this as wholly inadequate in a world where people get more and more of their education outside of formal institutions, and where new technology develops at dizzying speed. Ultimately, Blake sees a paradox: “If you're willing to skill someone up in a way that actually makes it easier for them to leave, they're actually more likely to stay.” Tune in to hear why Blake thinks our current way of talking about education is absurd, the enduring role of the book in today's learning culture, and how a shot-in-the-dark email to Mark Cuban saved his company.

In the Ancient Greece of Homeric times and mores, the concept of gifting, or gift-friendship, ξενία (‘xenia') was central. Assuming your fellow Greeks would observe xenia allowed you to travel in the hope you'd be good for food and shelter for the night from strangers on your Odyssey; in exchange, travelers would leave a parting gift in thanks. At many points in The Odyssey, we see xenia in action, like when Eumaeus the Swineherd shows it to the disguised Odysseus, noting guests always come under the protection of Zeus. Well, we've reached the end of our own Skills Odyssey here, and so we thought it appropriate to give you, our fellow travellers, some xenia back: and it's in the delightful shape of this bonus episode with our great final conversation with a CLO making experiments and achieving early results with a new approach to Skills, GE Healthcare's very honest and informed David Sperl. It's a conversation that covers his use of machine learning and analytics—again, underlining how key these practices are now in serious HR—as well as how dealing with challenges like replacing a zoo of older HR IT with one new global replacement just as is his division is being divested by its parent. He does a great job sharing learnings and best practice; it's a bit of xenia in its own right—as Dani says in the episode, “That's one of the things that I really like about HR: if once you solve the problem, you can share that with other people, because it's going to work different in their organizations anyway.” And as she goes on to say, in this Odyssey we've seen tons of people being very honest and transparent with us about what they're doing—which is xenia all of us can treasure. Please also note we have yet another gift to close the Season, though, which you will hear about right at the beginning. Now it's time to head back to shore--but we'll be back very soon with more things to inform, help and challenge you.

Deloitte is different. It's different for, of course, its unique approach to solving customer problems, as well as its sheer size and scale. But in the context of a Skills Odyssey, it's also pretty unique for having a) an ‘agency' structure that makes it peculiarly receptive to new ways of organizing around Skills, and b) an openness to try new things. It's also full, of course, of very smart people… we'd know, as both Stacia and Dani are alumni! But today's guest, Chief Learning Officer of Deloitte's US operation, Eric Dingler, isn't interested in the past. In fact, he's pretty critical about what Deloitte (and the rest of us in L&D) didn't get right historically (“a talent/career model-level role hasn't allowed us to be as agile as we need to be and enable our organization to be as agile”) around career development. Instead, he's very, very much about the future. In our discussion, you'll see that for yourself as we cover a wide range of topics, from what it's like to be in the CLO cockpit for a 145,000 person end of a half million-strong people organization, the central importance of agility as the lens Deloitte wants to see things through going forward, the role of data and analytics—even how he knows what L&D does really can touch so many people, making a better world for us all. We're really glad we spoke to this fellow Skills Odyssey voyager; we suspect you will be, too.

And as someone who built what may well have been one of the very first ever talent marketplaces during her years at global energy equipment giant Schneider Electric, she's also got incredible street cred for any Skills discussion. If that wasn't enough, her years moving through the HR ranks at places like Tata and AXA would also mark her out as someone worth a conversation with… but now she's capping all of her achievements so far with impressive work at British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology brand AstraZeneca. Where, among other things, she is quietly working away on doing her bit to design ‘a future that loves us all.' A brilliant phrase, for sure. But what's great about Manisha, who we've been wanting to compare Skills Odyssey notes with for soooo long, is that's not just epic, Homeric poetry: she's actually doing the steering and the navigating.
