After Move, Vet/Rep Becomes Savage Wonder

Theater and art gallery opens in Beacon Vet/Rep, the theater company that moved from Cornwall to Beacon last year and is transforming the former bank building at 139 Main St. into a showcase for talented veterans and their family members, has been rechristened Savage Wonder. This weekend (May 9-10) kicks off the institution's inaugural season of productions in The Parlor, a 50-seat room. Most of the staged readings will be presented every Saturday for a month, although exceptions include the sold-out debut tonight (May 9) of The Bald Soprano, by Eugene Ionesco, three future dates and a six-week run of World War II veteran Noel Coward's scandalous 1920s comedy, Fallen Angels. All the performers are members of the Actors' Equity union, which includes Broadway-caliber professional actors and stage managers. On Saturday (May 10), Savage Wonder will unveil Savage Wonderground, a 4,000-square-foot basement art gallery, and The Grape Rebellion, a wine and dessert bar. The first exhibit is Radical Fun, curated by gallery director Jeannie Freilich, who commutes from New York City. It runs through July 6. A 60-seat theater, named The Kristofferson (after Kris, who turned down a position teaching literature at West Point, spurned the Army to write country songs and earned the wrath of his military family) is scheduled to open next year. A second bar and another main stage with 125 seats is planned for 2027. "One reason for the rebranding is that every time I spoke to groups about Vet/Rep, I had to make it clear that we're not providing art therapy - we rarely do war stories and not everyone onstage is a veteran," says Chris Meyer, founder and artistic director. "We're also going beyond theater by adding the art center and wine component." Meyer came up with Savage Wonder during a deployment in New Mexico (he served in the Army for 14 years after 9-11): "It's where the warrior and artist intersect." The revamped logo, which resembles a paint, wine or blood splotch, is a Rorschach test. "Our brand's spirit animal is the octopus, which encapsulates what the Savage Wonder thought experiment is about: intimate, absurd, whimsical and jarring." To expand the talent pool and repertoire, immediate family members of veterans may act onstage, direct a play or contribute a script. The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde (coming in June), makes the cut because the playwright's son served in the British military. Beyond the veteran thread, many of the season's themes convey a farcical sensibility. The absurdist Bald Soprano, from 1950, contains several exchanges with nonsensical dialogue. Nicolay Gogol's Inspector General, scheduled for October, premiered in 1836 and satirizes Russian bureaucracy. The son of actors, Meyers' flair for the dramatic enhances the staged readings. At the launch party on May 3, a hubbub interrupted his presentation and startled the audience. It turned out to be two actors shaking things up with a short performance set in a VA hospital waiting room to nowhere. "We're not sitting around or using music stands, we can stage the hell out of our readings," says Meyer. "We've had five-minute fight scenes; people enter through a window or trip and fall into the wall. Anything can happen." Savage Wonder is located at 139 Main St. in Beacon. The Bald Soprano will be performed at 7 p.m. on May 17, May 24 and May 31; tickets are $25 at savagewonder.org. Radical Fun will open at The Savage Wonderground on Saturday (May 10) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Savage Wonder set for Oct. 11-13 The Veterans Repertory Theater, a performing arts nonprofit that is pouring six figures into renovating the 1929 bank building at 139 Main St. in Beacon, will host its first event in the space on Oct. 11, the Savage Wonder Festival of Veterans in the Arts. VetRep's work "is not art therapy, although I am all for art therapy," says founder and artistic director Chris Meyer. "We're not here to help veterans - we're here so that veterans can help American theater, not necessarily with war stories or wallowing in pity, but with world-class, public-facing productions that could be about anything and are informed by the veteran perspective." For the company, veteran is a broad term that includes first responders, law enforcement, intelligence services, foreign service and Department of Defense employees, along with their immediate family members. The performers on Oct. 11 range from opera singer Jesus Daniel Hernandez to live painters. Work by Beacon artists Matt Kinney and Michael Isabell will be on display. Meyer says the event is intended to represent the "ferocity and the creativity" of veterans. "We're looking to present the entire spectrum of the arts with a broad aperture." The company's pillars are intimacy, absurdity, whimsy and jarring stories. Meyer, who enlisted in the U.S. Army after 9/11, began staging readings, producing plays, hosting art shows and holding multimedia festivals in 2021 after returning from deployment in Afghanistan. "I feel like we're 10 minutes old," says Meyer, the scion of a thespian family. Savage Wonder 2024 Friday (Oct. 11) Noon - 5 p.m. Art gallery open with works and live painting by Kat Furrow, Delvin Goode, Lani Hankins, Gina Herrera, Angelo T. See bit.ly/vetrep-savage-2024. A donor helped underwrite the renovation project to transform the cavernous 12,000-square-foot space into a vaudeville room in the back, a basement art gallery and a theater with a modular stage, 53-foot ceiling and seating for 125 people. VetRep signed a favorable lease-to-own agreement for the building in March. For 60 years, the building housed Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, a historic Black congregation that sold the property in 2021 and moved to a new location in Fishkill. Meyer foresees many shows in the round and lauds the location. "This is what 'right' looks like," he says. "It took six weeks to get the contract completed after we visited the site." Expect a dizzying 48- to 50-week programming schedule, along with public access to the art gallery. "We own the rights to a huge backlog of material," says Meyer. "It's going to be a circus." VetRep is adding a wine bar to the art gallery and a full bar for the main stage and vaudeville room, located in the old bank's vault and created by cutting through the back wall to build a tunnel between the rooms. By year's end, the troupe is relocating its offices from Cornwall, in Orange County, to 6 Commerce St., steps from the theater's back door. The building will also provide housing for actors and apprenticeships and internships for veterans and their families. Meyer's construction crew tells him that all but the main stage should be completed by year's end, "but even I'm a little skeptical," he says. The goal is to have the soaring theater space ready for a new season in March. "We want this to be the mecca for veterans and the arts," he says. "There's a big wellspring of untapped talent out there."

From Jeremiah 29:7, we know God's people should seek the welfare of the places and people around them. But is seeking the welfare of our community something Christians can pursue by means of investing choices?Today, we speak with an investment manager who has been "seeking the welfare of cities" all over America and the world through his advocacy work with corporations. As we will hear today, investors can influence decisions made behind closed doors by corporations. Chris Meyer joins us today to examine how this advocacy works.Chris Meyer is the Manager of Stewardship Investing Research and Advocacy for Praxis Mutual Funds®, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. What is shareholder advocacy, and how are you currently doing it with Praxis? At Praxis, they use seven different impact strategies to make a difference through investments. One of them is shareholder advocacy, which they also call corporate engagement. It harnesses the power of ownership to create change by using voting stock rights and privileges. This can take the form of writing letters, filing shareholder proposals, and dialogue with company management, which is the most effective form of engagement. Their advocacy program aims to build relationships with companies and help them improve their policies and performance, rather than chastising or embarrassing them. What's the recipe for real, lasting change in how these companies operate?Meaningful change always takes time. When they start an engagement with a company, their outlook for achieving goals is typically in terms of years, not weeks or months. Part of that is spent on building a solid foundation because they need to understand the issues we work on deeply. So they familiarize themselves with the necessary information to speak intelligently and purposefully when they engage the company. And that takes, of course, a lot of preparation. They also seek to build trusting relationships with the companies they engage with. This comes over many minor and significant interactions with company leaders. Trust, as we know, is usually earned and not given, and so that takes time as well. However, companies typically come to understand that Praxis is approaching them in good faith and that we're invested in their success, not just our own; an overarching goal they have for every engagement is to reach mutually beneficial outcomes. So, for instance, if a power company is able to reduce its air and water pollution substantially, it's excellent for creation. The company is also more efficient in its operations and better positioned to compete against its peers. And its reputation can benefit as well. In the long term, that's better for shareholders, the company, and the communities where it operates. How do you stay motivated when change seems to come so slowly?Recognizing incremental changes along the way, even small ones, is crucial as these can facilitate future progress. As individuals, we are not responsible for solving all the world's problems alone or righting all wrongs. The mission is to work toward creation's wholeness with the time and resources available while honoring the progress made step by step. This long-term perspective can help us persevere even when change does not happen as quickly as desired. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:Is there any way I could make an extra $400 per month to help support my wife and me until her disability is reapproved, which is expected to take up to nine months? My job in the restaurant industry doesn't provide stable hours, so I wanted to know if there were any other options to increase our income temporarily during this challenging time.Should start taking my Social Security benefits at age 67 or wait until age 70? I recently applied for Social Security but haven't received a decision yet. I want to put the lump sum retroactive payment and my monthly benefits toward paying my $87,000 mortgage. According to a mortgage calculator, I could pay it off within two years if I do this. However, my nephew thinks I should wait until I am 70 for higher monthly benefits. I didn't fully understand his perspective, so I wanted your help in explaining the pros and cons of each approach.Do I need to pay tithes based on the interest I am earning from a CD that I have invested in through my financial advisor? Rather than taking the interest payments, I have been reinvesting them, so I would like to know if I should be tithing on that interest income even though I have not actually received the money since it has been reinvested back into the CD.Resources Mentioned:Praxis Mutual FundsRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. The pace of advances in AI is faster than anything we've ever seen in human history. Nathan explains how this can create a lot of overwhelm for leaders, leading to a disparate kind of view, with leaders saying, “I don't know what the future looks like if I use AI but I know what it looks like if I don't.” The sentiment is that we know we have to do something with AI, we just don't know what.If it sounds familiar to you, tune into the episode. Chris Meyer zu Natrup, Managing Director at MzN, and Nathan Chappell, Senior Vice President at DonorSearch AI, discuss:What AI can do for a nonprofit organization, not tomorrow, but today. The difference between predictive AI and generative AI, and how NGOs can use both together to serve their mission in a much more strategic and precise way.The steps every leader needs to take with AI. “I would identify where my biggest gap is, I wouldn't look at AI as this umbrella thing that could solve all my problems, I would get very specific on one gap or challenge that I have in my organization and then and only then would I look at the types of AI technologies.” Why Nathan believes that AI is the only scalable solution to reverse declines in charitable giving. There is a systemic decline in the number of people who are giving to charity in almost most developed nations, but Nathan describe two ways that AI can work to reverse this:It can create so much efficiency that an organization can now offload mundane tasks and instead spend more time human to human.By using AI at scale, nonprofits organizations will more intimately know their audience by using thousands of data points and will be able to identify those donors that will have the greatest lifetime value. Could AI actually make us more human and more empathetic by cutting through the dead digital overload that we are exposed to every day? What responsible AI looks like for humanity, and the outsized responsibility that the nonprofit sector has for ensuring we prioritize safety over scalability. Nathan closed by quoting Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett's business partner, who said “show me the incentives and I'll show you the outcome”. If we look at the AI arms race, scale has been prioritized over safety almost every time. What do we think the incentive is for the nonprofit sector? ResourcesThe Generosity Crisis The Case for Radical Connection to Solve Humanity's Greatest Challenges, by Nathan Chappell, Brian Crimmins and Michael Ashley.Sgn up for MzN's free webinar on proposal writing and AI - link to the webinarMore on Nathan:Nathan Chappell is a Senior Vice President at DonorSearch AI, where he leads AI deployments for many of the largest nonprofit organizations in the United States. With over 10 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and fundraising, he is a co-author of the award-winning book, The Generosity Crisis: The Case for Radical Connection to Solve Humanity's Greatest Challenges. He is also an inventor of multiple AI patents and a certified fundraising executive.Nathan is passionate about the responsible use of AI for social good and the ethical implications of AI for philanthropy. I'm joined by Chris Meyer, legislative assistant for Minnesota state Sen. Omar Fateh, to talk about a slew of ambitious zoning reforms to be considered during the 2024 legislative session. You're really going to want to contact your state senators and representatives about these. Eliminating parking minimums, allowing fourplexes by right, requiring cities to allow apartments near high frequency transit, allowing cities to experiment with a land value tax -- and closing the loophole that's allowed rich folks masquerading as environmentalists to spend the last five years trying to have the state courts undo the Minneapolis 2040 Plan. Because Chris is also a member of the Minneapolis Planning Commission, we also talk about a series of reforms he'd like to see taken up in Minneapolis this year: allowing corner stores; making sure triplexes aren't just legal, they're viable; density bonuses for affordable housing; incentivizing more family sized housing units near schools; and more. ***Please listen until the end to participate in the Wedge LIVE podcast's first ever prize giveaway. Financial results for the year ended June reflect a massive bottom-line turnaround. CEO Chris Meyer reckons there's much more to come, with another strong 12-month forecast and longer-term profit growth of 20% targeted. “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”  Ephesians 6:11Chris Meyer is Manager of Stewardship Investing Advocacy and Research at Praxis Mutual Funds,  an underwriter of this program.  What exactly is shareholder advocacy and how does Praxis do it?Many people begin by screening or avoiding certain industries or companies based on their values.Screening is a valid approach but has limited power to create real change.Praxis uses seven different impact strategies for investments.Shareholder advocacy is one of these strategies, leveraging ownership rights to drive change.Shareholder advocacy includes activities like writing letters, filing proposals, and engaging in dialogues with company management. The goal of shareholder advocacy is not to chastise or embarrass companies but to encourage profitability while also promoting positive impact.Praxis collaborates with other investors, primarily from the faith community, in their advocacy efforts. How does Praxis work with many other investors, especially the faith community, to advocate for Christian values? Collaboration with others significantly enhances the impact of their work.Coalition efforts with various faith-based institutional investors broaden and deepen their reach.Companies are more receptive when approached collectively by a coalition.Collaborations focus on common interests and shared capacities.Example: Praxis collaborates on human rights and child labor issues, while others may focus on pharmaceutical companies and medication affordability.Praxis takes leadership roles in some engagements and partners actively in others.Prioritization of issues and companies is essential due to limited resources. What kind of preparation goes into this type of engagement? Engagement preparation involves issue prioritization and collaboration with investor partners.Teams are formed, leadership structures are established, and goals are set.Education and strategy sessions, both in-person and virtual, are organized to become well-informed about relevant topics.External expertise is often brought in to enhance understanding.Example: Engagement with Target and Walmart on human rights and child labor issues.Focus is on encouraging robust human rights policies and supply chain enforcement.Pre-engagement research includes reviewing company publications, reports, and industry news.Input from human rights experts and NGOs is sought to understand global supply chain issues.Thorough preparation is crucial for gaining understanding and credibility in engagement with companies. If company dialogues are central to real change, what do these engagements look like, and what makes an effective conversation or dialogue with a company?Meaningful dialogue with company management is the pinnacle of shareholder advocacy for impactful change.Engagement usually starts with an investor letter outlining concerns and requesting dialogue.Initial communication may be with investor relations and corporate counsel. The goal is to engage with decision-makers overseeing the relevant issue, often vice presidents.Dialogues are typically in-person or via video conference, lasting one to two hours or longer.Building strong, trusting relationships is crucial.Success comes when companies see a vested interest in their future success and the relevance of the concerns raised. So what is the end game? How do you know you've been successful in making meaningful change in supportive kingdom values in these engagements?Setting clear goals and ways to measure success is crucial in advocacy.Having a vision of the desired outcome of the dialogue is important.Long-lasting engagements can lose meaning without a clear endpoint.Avoid being seen as a nuisance by the company or becoming their free consultants.Common scenarios for ending dialogues include a company refusing to engage or dismissing concerns. In the best case, all goals are met or exceeded, and the engagement transitions to a monitoring phase to ensure commitment follow-through.Learn more about Praxis at PraxisMutualFunds.com. On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: Is there a more affordable way to handle the Medicaid paperwork and power of attorney, given limited financial resources? What's the best way to invest for a child's future? Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. What can you and I do to stay focused on what's important in life, versus what people and situations want us to believe is important? https://chrismeyerauthor.com https://BeTheManMasterclass.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/be-the-man/support

Chris Meyer shares an excerpt from his book, "Life in 20 Lessons : What a Funeral Guy Discovered about Life, from Death" Episode 1402: An Excerpt From "Life in 20 Lessons : What a Funeral Guy Discovered about Life, from Death" by Chris Meyer If you could fast-forward your life to your deathbed and listen to your regrets (and joys), and then rewind your life and live it with that knowledge about living a life with no excuses, no misgivings, no looking back—would you do it? This book provides that knowledge. After fourteen years in the funeral business, Chris Meyer has listened to grieving families, their regrets and wishes, sadness and pain, for the dearly departed—expressing their “if onlys” and “what ifs.” From these painful graveside encounters, he learned lessons that kept repeating themselves. These are the (first) 20 life lessons: some simple, some profound, some irreverent—lessons about life, from death. This is not a story about dying. This is a story of living. This is…life in 20 lessons. Poignant. Funny. Filled with love. For the last sixteen years, Chris has been a funeral homeowner. In addition to learning many things about love, loss, and life, his entrepreneurial spirit drove him to create two websites from the ground up: first magillaloans.com and, more recently, funandmoving.com, a streaming exercise and rehab platform for those over sixty years of age and the infirm. Chris has a Juris Doctorate and Master's in Environmental Law (Magna Cum Laude) from Vermont Law School and a BA in Politics and History from Brandeis University. He has been a licensed New York State attorney for over twenty-eight years. He has been married for over twenty years and enjoys coaching his sons in various sports and I wanted to bring him on because he is also the author of Four Months...And A Lifetime A Father, His Son, and Their Epic Basketball Team's Nine-Year Journey Together.

Episode 264 is about lessons of death Chris Meyer has a unique life story. He thought he was going to be a lawyer but then he found something that threw him off: an unexpected career path. He quit the law firm to pursue his passion for the funeral business and learned more about life than he could ever have imagined. As a funeral director, the lessons he learned are way beyond compared to what he learned at law school. He shares these experiences in a book he wrote called 'Life In 20 Lessons'. 'Memento Mori', a philosophical saying that translates to 'remember death'. Our time is finite here on earth and it is also the greatest commodity. So what are you doing with your time? Are you learning from your failures, are you spending time with your loved ones? Chris elaborates how we can be brave and face life when the time is ticking. As a famous roman-emperor said "Death smiles at all, all a man can do is smile back."
