Starting your own firm can be a nervous experience, but the creative freedom it offers can be well worth it. Joining the show this week is an interior designer who draws inspiration from his 25 years of design experience around the globe. After working with multiple internationally renowned design firms he is now on the journey of running his own studio. Welcome to the show, Founder & Creative Director of Pierre & Co Design Studio, Pierre Josselin!Pierre and Dan sit down to discuss Pierre's motivations for starting a business, what excites him most about the design process, and the importance of having strong relationships with others in the industry. Takeaways: Hospitality is a shared passion. Those in the industry have an exciting passion for the work they do. It is a people driven industry with a strong sense of togetherness that is focused on creating relationships. To create great designs, you need to cover every aspect of the project, and understand what it takes to get to the finish line. Avoiding unnecessary handoffs of work results in a higher quality and more consistent project that is completed in less time. As a designer, it's important to understand how your answers affect the rest of the process. A timely response to a client's question not only results in a happier client, but a faster project. A delayed answer delays further steps of the project. The best coworkers you can have are ones that challenge you, but who you can also challenge. Great ideas are not born in a vacuum, and fostering a space that allows for collaboration and feedback will open your eyes to new designs. While going out on your own and starting your own firm can be daunting, it offers many benefits. As you have full control over the intricacies, you have full creative freedom, and the ability to complete work at a faster pace. In the design process, it is important to implement efficiencies wherever you can. Even by getting all the relevant parties in one room for the drawing process and doing instant revisions can shave weeks off of a project. While we're there, we are definitely going to run into our share of some of Canada's most frightful ghosts. All this and more on the 104th episode of The Possibly Paranormal Podcast. Conspiracy alert! What if the hotel ghosts all had a secret meeting room with no doors or windows? Kori and Ainsley have a theory that this may have been the case at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Canada.
Join us this week as we head to one of the most beautiful places in all of Canada, Banff National Park. In the 1800's settlers realized that with the beauty of this area, money and tourism was a huge opportunity. They decided to build a beautiful hotel in the heart of Banff National Park. What they weren't expecting when it was built, was all the spirits that would never leave and the mystery that lives in room 873. We love our National Parks and we know you do too but when you're out there, remember to enjoy the view but watch your back. The Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, known as the Castle of the Rockies, is a 130+ year old resort and spa in a large castle located in Banff, Alberta, Canada. Because of a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world, William Cornelius Van Horne began construction in 1887 and officially opened on June 1, 1888. This location wasn’t just chosen for its scenic beauty, it was also by a railway and served as one of Canada’s grand railway hotels. William knew that he couldn't export the scenery, so why not import the tourists. The hotel has a few residents who've checked in throughout the years, but a few who’ve never checked out! One of the most famous entities at the hotel is the ghost bride who fell down the grand marble staircase after her wedding and broke her neck. Since then, many have seen the figure of a woman in a wedding dress walking up and down the stairs. There is also Sam the bellman that is still performing his job by helping hotel guests when they are in need. One of the more terrifying paranormal experiences occur in room 873. Legend says that a mother and child were murdered in room 873 by the father and husband, and since then people have been woken in the middle of the night in the room by screaming. Once the lights come on, there are bloody handprints on the mirror that can't be wiped off by the cleaning staff until they just disappear. Due to all the complaints, the room has been bricked up and closed off from guests. What haunts this beautiful castle in Banff? This weeks guest is Paige Henderson. Paige is currently employed as the Manager at Swine and Vine in Kitchener, Ontario. We talk with Paige about topics such as the ongoing debate about tip culture, making a liveable wage in the industry, sexual harassment - more specifically the differences between treatment of genders when it comes to work colleagues as well as treatment from guests. Paige got her start in The Industry while in high school by getting a job in Tim Hortons. This introduction to corporate restaurants and structure eventually led to a job at McDonalds for the next several years off an on. This was eventually followed by a stint out west in Banff working at the Fairmont Banff Springs resort for a season. Once her stint working out west completed, Paige moved to Quebec and more specifically the Montreal suburb of Dollard-des-Ormeaux where she got her first job as a host. Eventually, Paige moved back to Kitchener-Waterloo and worked at popular Uptown Waterloo spots such as Fox and The Fiddle and Taco Farm. After several years at Taco Farm, Paige spent several months travelling in South East Asia. Upon her return, Paige moved on to working at Swine and Vine and continues to work there today. In this episode, I reveal my innermost limiting thoughts that I have while playing music at the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel for the weekend. http://musiclifecoach.joannejanzen.com/ep20

Perhaps the most famous of Canadian Hauntings is that of the ghost bride of the Banff Springs Hotel. But before we reveal her story, let's dive into the history, the lore, and the many hauntings at the resort hotel. This is Unsolved Mysteries of the World, Season One Episode 21, The Haunted Banff Springs HotelLocated in the heart of Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the world famous Fairmont Banff Springs hotel stands as a landmark in the picturesque alpine town of Banff, Alberta.Canada's "Castle in the Rockies", has been providing legendary hospitality to guests for more than 125 years including, Prime Ministers, Presidents, actors and actresses such as Marylin Monroe and royalty from around the globe. The luxurious Banff Springs Hotel is well known as the ultimate stay for the rich and famous. It's also famous for the countless ghost stories it boasts. A place, many believe is haunted. Guests and employees alike have all kinds of ghost stories to tell.Over the years, employees and guests have reported strange occurrences from tables moving on their own, to sightings of a bellhop to a bride engulfed in flames. The site for a resort hotel was envisioned by William Cornelius Van Horne, President of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 1880s. He chose a perfect spot along the bow river, near a massive waterfalls and near thermal hotsprings that was nestled into towering mountains. There was no more beautiful location in all the world, and Van Horne set out to make the most beautiful hotel. The original hotel was built in 1888 like a Swiss Chalet and had 200 rooms in several wings. It also included, at the time Canada's tallest structure – a viewing tower. In later years it was partially destroyed by fire, rebuilt and expanded in the Scottish Baronial style. The expansions and wings now make for a large, castle like structure. Originally opening with 200 guest rooms, the hotel now offers 778 guest rooms with a few dozen rooms known for their legends and hauntings. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Story 1 - Breaking News There have been several news stories since our last episode. The first one deals with an unexpected challenge related to bears and buffaloberries…Calgary outdoor shops have been having a hard time keeping bear spray in stock. You may have to look around a bit to find a canister if you don't already have one. Well, at least people are beginning to stock up on bear spray. In other news, there is a proposal for a gondola to the gondola in Banff Townsite. The road to the Sulphur Mountain Gondola has been getting busier and busier and routinely gets backed up for an hour or more during peak times. This 66 million dollar proposal would see a gondola built from the townsite to the Upper Hot Springs/Sulphur Mountain Gondola base with stops at Tunnel Mountain Trailhead, The Banff Centre, and the Fairmont Banff Springs along the way. It will be a tough sell to parks as it would need expansion beyond the townsite boundaries in order to build the large parking lots designed to catch vehicles at both entrances to town in order to funnel them to an expanded public transit system as well as to the townsite gondola stations. New funding is coming to Kananaskis Country and surrounding parks. The Alberta government has announced 25.6 million dollars will be spent improving and expanding camping facilities in the Kananaskis and nearby areas. The money will add more sites with power, additional trails and improvement to camping facilities. This is welcome news. Jasper National Park is also seeing two major developments. First, there will be a major development at the Mount Edith Cavell Day-Use Area. In 2012 and 2014, large blocks of ice broke off of the Ghost Glacier high above the tiny lake at the base of Angel Glacier. The first one sent a huge tsunami-like wave that caused major destruction to the day-use and parking areas. The 2014 incident was smaller but still caused significant damage. This fall's development will require the area to close Sept 19 so they can move (and enlarge) the parking lot out of the danger zone and improve the trail systems. South of Jasper townsite, the Valley of Five Lakes Trailhead parking area is also seeing a major upgrade. This will result in it closing as of Sept 6 for the season to allow workers access. Over the past few years, the popularity of this low elevation trail system has resulted in cars spilling out to the highway for miles as hikers jockey for a place to park. This will expand the parking lot as well as improving the washroom facilities and adding additional picnic tables to the site. Story 2 - Another Wolf Put Down by Parks A second female wolf from the Bow Valley Pack has had to be destroyed after getting into human food and garbage. This is yet another terrible hit for the beleaguered Bow Valley pack and leaves it with only 3 adult wolves and 2 remaining pups from an original 6 at the start of the season. This wolf pack has had a very difficult year. Hopefully the remaining wolves can stay clear of human food and continue to wander the landscape around the town of Banff. Story 3 - Ground Squirrel Research I was lucky to be able to take in a presentation by 5 biologists studying ground squirrels in Kananaskis Country. Led by lead researcher Danielle Rivet provided some really good information on general ecology as well as some of the impacts of climate change on two different populations of ground squirrels. Surprisingly, climate change does not simply mean less winter snow and an earlier rise for ground squirrels, especially in high elevations like Ptarmigan Cirque. In fact research has shown an increase in late season storms which may have a very different effect on the little guys. They were kind enough to let me record the program and so I've edited it down a bit for time but I hope you enjoy it. I certainly did. Many thanks to Danielle and the rest of her team: Sophie Tuppen, Jorden Gladden, Elena Plana and Elly Hedt.
