Send us a textTwo physicians challenge everything you thought you knew about weight loss in this eye-opening discussion on the biology behind obesity. Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, a triple board-certified endocrinologist and obesity medicine expert, joins Dr. Daria Hamrah to reframe obesity as a complex medical condition—not a failure of willpower. The conversation delves into why "eat less, exercise more" fails most people long-term. Dr. Salas-Whalen explains how genetics can account for up to 70% of obesity risk, with parents' weight before conception significantly affecting their children's predisposition. Beyond genetics, we learn how hormonal changes, aging, and environmental factors create what she calls "the perfect storm" working against sustainable weight loss.Perhaps most fascinating is the detailed explanation of how GLP-1 medications work by targeting both survival and reward eating patterns. Unlike restrictive diets, these treatments address the biological roots of weight regulation while providing psychological relief many patients describe as life-changing. The doctors share moving patient stories, including one man who transformed so dramatically he was unrecognizable—ultimately quitting his job to become a nutrition specialist after experiencing the profound impact of effective treatment. The episode also covers the alarming impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in everyday items like plastic bottles and food containers, with practical advice on reducing exposure. You'll learn why building muscle might be the most important thing you can do for metabolic health, and why body composition analysis offers far more valuable information than BMI alone.Whether you're struggling with weight, supporting someone who is, or simply interested in the science of metabolism, this conversation offers compassionate, evidence-based perspectives that could change how you think about health forever. Listen now to understand why weight management shouldn't be treated as a cosmetic concern—but rather as the serious medical issue it truly is.Dr. Rocio Salas-WhalenIG: @drsalaswhalenNEW YORK ENDOCRINOLOGY, P.C.1107 PARK AVENUENEW YORK, NY 10128PHONE / (212) 722-ENDO (3636)FAX / 212.722.3639Tweet me @realdrhamrahIG @drhamrah

Send us a textFeminine energy isn't just for women—it's a vital force within all of us waiting to be understood and embraced. In this deeply moving conversation with authors Rocío Aquino and Angel Orengo, we explore the transformative journey behind their novel "The Orchid: The Secret Code of Modern Goddesses," which serves as both a compelling story and a practical guidebook for inner healing.Rocío shares her deeply personal struggle with forgiveness that sparked their creative journey. While her partner Angel possessed a natural "Teflon" quality when facing life's challenges, Rocío carried emotional heaviness that took decades to release. Their contrasting experiences and shared study of spiritual psychology ultimately inspired them to craft a novel that makes powerful healing techniques accessible to everyone. What makes "The Orchid" truly special is its perfect balance—only 10% focuses on problems while 90% explores practical solutions through the story of five women at a healing retreat. The authors reveal simple yet profound practices anyone can implement immediately, like speaking to yourself as your best friend for just sixty seconds or cultivating gratitude even in difficult moments. These tools create vibrations that expand inner peace and push out insecurity, regardless of your background in energy work. The symbolism behind the title reflects their vision—like the 30,000+ varieties of orchids, each person is beautiful, unique and resilient in their own way. Interestingly, "orchid" derives from the Greek word for testicles, perfectly capturing the book's essence of balancing feminine and masculine energies within everyone. This balance creates true power and healing.Through "The Orchid," Rocío and Angel invite you to experience a complete literary healing retreat at your own pace. Whether you're new to energy healing or a seasoned practitioner, their story offers fresh perspectives and gentle reminders that transformation begins within. Their ultimate goal? To create ripples of self-love that expand outward, helping each reader become "the change they wish to see in the world."Ready to experience this transformative journey yourself? The other day, as I took a taxi to the airport in Seville, the land of Gypsy spells and good and bad luck charms, I had the fortune to drive with Rocio. A wonderful lady who, apart from driving her car, also does ancient Roman reenactments in Merida.- (a beautiful city nearby that you must visit on your travels). She told me that sometimes she dresses as a vestal virgin and does enchantments with her group, and that other times, she plays the part of a high-born Roman lady. She did say that she prefers the lady-like outfit because she gets to wear better clothes.Any way, she then told me of a few things she does to call on the good luck charms and I am passing this wisdom on because, well, you just never know when you will need this bit of information. * On the 11th and 21st days of every month, she burns a wax candle to give thanks for being alive and for all the good things she has.* Every Friday, she burns the peels of the garlic cloves she collects throughout the week. That is for abundance and well-being at home. * On the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd day of every month, she puts a little bit of ground cinnamon on the palm of her right hand, and then she says an encantation and wishes for goodness and richness at home. Then she blows it away and doesn't clean the floor in 24 hours. I can do that, I said. I had to ask her about love… what does she do to attract the romantic muses? She responded that she had no idea; she had been married for 40 years. But she has heard that you have to pray to St. Anthony. Ah, of course! The patron saint of lost causes! And with this, I leave you! SincerelyThe Serial Hostess Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.
