The Mind, Body and Soul in Healing
Psychobiotics and the Future Treatment of Depression with Scott Anderson

"I'm not saying this is going to cure your depression, but I am saying that it stands a good chance of fixing up your gut, and if your depression is gut-related this could have a big impact on you. This could be a big explanation for the worldwide epidemic of depression that is going on because it is very strongly correlated, not caused, but correlated to the extraction of fiber from our foods."      Episode Description: We begin with an overview of the microbiome especially as it functions as part of our immune system. From there we discuss the connection between the gut and the brain and how each influences the other. We consider the complex and serious condition that is depression which has many causes and many treatments. While the use of pre and probiotics that have impact on one's mind, psychobiotics, has not yet been demonstrated to have efficacy in the treatment of depression in double-blinded research there are many promising signs that it will. It is also available to be used as an adjunct to other well-researched interventions. Diet is key to a healthy gut and a healthy low inflammation body and brain. Scott makes a number of dietary recommendations for a robust and diverse microbiome. We close with his sharing his personal story of healing through the use of a prebiotic.     Our Guest: "Scott Anderson - I've always been fascinated with science and technology. After graduating with a degree in Physics and Math, I jumped into the world of personal computers, forming Sonoma Softworks, one of the first personal computer software companies in California. I wrote the first educational software published by Apple (Supermap), the first PC database manager (Datadex), and the first vector animation program (Fantavision, a forerunner of Flash). I produced the 3D educational game LEGO Island, coordinating marketing and development efforts with Microsoft, Intel, Adobe, and LEGO. I was a co-founder of BigFix Software, which was subsequently purchased by IBM.  I have written seven books on technology and hundreds of articles on subjects ranging from video to advanced medicine. I co-authored one of the first books on stem cells, Human Embryonic Stem Cells, with Dr. Ann Kiessling of Harvard. The book is used in graduate schools throughout the country. My latest book is The Psychobiotic Revolution, coauthored with John Cryan and Ted Dinan from National Geographic. I'm currently writing Mood by Microbe for Psychology Today."

Starring squid kids, fireworks and a man dressed like a bat. Please note: The show was recorded on July 5, and as such does not touch on the events of July 11. We will address the passing of Satoru Iwata on the next show, but hope we can give you a bit of happiness in the meantime. The first show recorded after E3 is always a wild one, and 2015's post E3 show is no exception. In New Business, Donald has some rapid-fire impressions of the Nindies @ Home games and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D from the man who thought the original was the GOTY in 2012. However, the big story is that Donald has finally become a kid now (or a squid now, we can't tell) and both he and Austen embedded themselves on opposite sides of Splatoon's Splatfest I: The Fur Has Flown. After the mandatory Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate segment, Stephen decides to blow up a little bit of the Earth in a July 4 revisit of Fantavision, before blowing up the rest of the planet in Fallout: New Vegas. Game breaking bugs presumably not included, thanks to four and a half years of community QA. Speaking of things that could've used some QA, Austen has been getting his Batsune Miku on in Batman: Arkham City (SPOILERS FROM 57:50 TO 1:04:51) and some rapid fire quick hits that include the return of the greatest trailer in gaming history. The biggest fear with the post E3 show is with no Whatcha Watchin' for six weeks, it gets a little... crazy. And so it goes, with Stephen hitting SciFi's recent original Ascension by way of DUN DUN DUN and a Parks and Rec chaser. Donald finished off his own government show, but the stakes are a little higher when you're in The West Wing. Thankfully, Last Week Tonight provides a modern perspective on many of the same themes and has a British person. Austen fires through a load of insanity with Nobunagun and two seasons of SPAAAACE in Knights of Sidonia, while keeping things grounded with Pixar's perpetual bridesmaid Inside Out.We got Listener Mail this week, and it wasn't from our friend Thomas, so we tackle “stumble on” games that we might have missed back in the day. Then, it's a Lightning Round of post-E3 chatter as we cover Nintendo's recent investor QA, NOA PR repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot (and this is before the Devil's Third incident), and Batman: Arkham Knight's troubled PC release. The Mushrooms cover off cord hell, security updates making things extremely inconvenient, and Donald's amazing July 4 weekend.Next episode will feature our thoughts on the passing of Satoru Iwata and more – including possibly the annual summer Top 5 games list, time depending. We'd love to hear from you for either one, so send them to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com, leave a comment here or send a Twitter message to @nfrpodcast. Until we meet again... can we really understand? This podcast was recorded on July 5, and was edited by Donald Theriault and Austen Parkin. All clips used under fair use protection.

The Pokedex lied to me! Apparently, Wailord can fly through space and evolve into Moltres! Thanks, Child of Eden! Grab your +5 Rainbow Staff of Awesome and prepare to Fly Away, because NFR is back to deliver another multitude of multi-platform memoirs courtesy of hosts Donald; Stephen; and Austen.  Donald kicks off this week's New Business with a trip down memory lane in Kirby's Dream Collector's Special Edition for the Wii ("Sucking" and "Blowing" puns withheld by special request).  Moving from the glacially-evolving to the recently-innovating, we travel to an alternate (and exquisitely cel-shaded) war-torn universe with the critically-beloved (but unfortunately poorly-selling) PS3-exclusive strategy game Valkyria Chronicles.  Nowhere else can you see Vyse and Aika from Skies of Arcadia team-up with a bug-obsessed tank commander and his group of misfits to defend their homes from an invasion by Steampunk, ancient magic-wielding Nazis. Afterwards, Stephen takes us to the surprisingly barren Chinese jungles with the recent World of WarCraft: Mists of Panderia expansion, a game best described as Kung Fu Panda meets...Pokemon?  As the sun seems to be setting on WoW, we light-up the nighttime sky with the PS2 launch title Fantavision and launch into Spaaaaaaaaaaace with the infuriating Kickstarter-funded space combat Rogue-Like FTL.   Further raising the stakes, Austen strikes back with a Rogue-Like of his own with the delightfully bizarre Tokyo Jungle, the only game this Fall to potentially feature a Pomeranian locked in Mortal Kombat with a Velociraptor for control of a post-apocalyptic Tokyo.  In case you didn't think this game selection could get any weirder, we follow that up with one Demonic Lord's rubber ducky-fueled quest for Warioware-style vengeance in Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit.  On a more somber note, we then conclude the segment with Austen's thoughts on returning to Tetsuya Mizuguchi's enchanting (and psychedelic) musical opus Child of Eden.  Can it be that our harshest critic has a game from this console generation even he can't help gushing about and wishes was on the Wii U? After yet another harrowing journey through the unhinged psyche of the Nintendo World Report Forums with Now Posted, we tune in the latest episode of Watcha Been Watching.  Included in this week's programming are titles such as the war-time political drama Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Aaron Sorkin's further decent into madness and mediocrity with The Newsroom, and the apparently-decent Nintendo DS RPG-based anime Sands of Destruction (where the heroes' goal is to destroy the world...kumo). With the recent poor critical reception of Resident Evil 6 on our minds, our Feature Discussion delves into the Future of Japanese Games Development outside of Nintendo.  In this new age of globalization and expensive AAA game development, what Japanese studios seem equipped to weather the storm?  What future Japanese titles are we looking forward to?  What do Japanese studios need to do to become relevant again in the eyes of the rest of the world?  All these questions and more may be lightly touched upon in this week's shotgun-style Feature Discussion. As always, we then close the show with our 1ups/Poison Mushrooms, including the needlessly infuriating process involved with downloading anything on the (allegedly) online-savvy PlayStation Vita, the gaming industry's apparent burning desire to kill off single-player gaming as part of their passive-aggressive war on GameStop, and the annoyances of in-game travel time. We're still looking for feedback and questions for Listener Mail, which you can send to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com.  You can also post in our thread on the NWR forums, or leave us comments under this post on our website at http://nintendofreeradio.podbean.com.  Finally, if you're an iTunes user, be sure to drop us a rating as well so we know what you want to hear on future episodes!  NFR will be back in 2 weeks for Halloween, but until then NFR's Journey Will Continue.
