Since we published our previous episode, Sony not only announced it was having a State of Play event, but that event has already happened. Thus, we have much to discuss throughout this lengthy episode, an unexpected surprise for the PlayStation faithful. In short, the most recent State of Play was a great showcase of nearly 30 upcoming PlayStation 5 games, with some PS4 and PSVR2 mixed in there, too. And -- for those that care -- more than a half-dozen of the games are PS5 console exclusive, nipping that entire argument in the bud. In the realm of Sony second party, we've learned about a Marvel-themed fighting game from Arc System Works called Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, while Tecmo Koei's Team Ninja is hard at work on Nioh 3. Elsewhere, we were given the first glimpse at IO Interactive's long-in-development James Bond game called First Light, a brand-new Lumines offering from the creators of Tetris Effect, the return of Capcom's seemingly-beleaguered Pragmata, something fresh from Grasshopper Manufacture called Romeo Is A Dead Man, a late-September release date for Silent Hill F, our first look at the sequel to Iga's Bloodstained, and -- yes indeed! -- confirmation of Final Fantasy Tactics coming to PlayStation in just a few months in the form of The Ivalice Chronicles. "No games?" Maybe if you don't like or play video games, perhaps. Other news this week includes our first look at Witcher 4 via a controversial UE5 tech demo, rumors of a native PS5 port for Red Dead Redemption 2, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Should 'game length' be considered a spoiler? How do we feel about pinball video games? Do we ever mess with the PSN's 'activity cards' while playing? In this week's episode of the Game Deflators, John and Ryan dive into the latest gaming news and updates. They kick things off by discussing recent comments from a Sony executive about the company's evolving relationship with FromSoftware. The guys reflect on Sony's initial reluctance to release Demon's Souls in the West and how this decision shaped the future of the iconic franchise. Next, they tackle the big news of NetEase selling off several of its overseas studios. With major names like Quantic Dream and Grasshopper Manufacture potentially facing closure, John and Ryan analyze the impact this could have on the gaming industry. The duo also shares updates from their ongoing Strixhaven DnD campaign. Finally, they wrap up the episode with a nostalgic review of Jak 3 for the PS2. Hear their thoughts on the game's mechanics, storyline, and how it holds up after all these years. Killer7 is one weird game. Developed in tandem by Grasshopper Manufacture and Capcom and first released in 2005, its very existence as a game defies description. Within moments of starting, you're placed into a world with talking bondage ghosts, a TV channel that drains your blood, and abstract puzzles that would fit right into Resident Evil. Combine this with a cinematic third person slow rail shooter and you might have just a taste of what Killer7 is all about, but the truth is that you're just scratching the surface of this enigma of a video game.Killer7 has a diehard cult following, not just for its presentation and aesthetic, but for its incredibly deep and confusing story. But for all its fans, what is the experience of playing Killer7 actually like? Is there an enjoyable game underneath all of its layers? Or are they merely disguising something that's all flash and no sizzle? On this episode, we discuss:Presentation and StyleKiller7 is absolutely dripping in style. From the broader minimalistic cell shaded environments to something as simple as the way characters reload their weapons, there's a unique vibe to this game that is hard to describe. Does the glamour eventually wear off, or does its presentation remain compelling for the full game runtime?Combat and PacingKiller7's combat is most reminiscent of something like House of the Dead, with zombie-like enemies and a first person static shooting style. Does it match the frantic pace and tension of a light gun game, or does giving the player total control of the rail movement lead to something more plodding?StoryWhat exactly is Killer7 trying to say? There are layers and layers of story here, from identity issues, to geopolitics, to conspiracy and control. Is this a compelling and understandable story? Does it make sense? Does it even need to make sense? We answer these questions and many more on the 121st episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! We are joined by special guest Dave Jackson of the Tales from the Backlog Podcast! He reviews interesting games that would otherwise sit on your shelf, with a focus on having spoiler free discussion initially for people who are on the fence. He also hosts A Top 3 Podcast, where he and friends rank the top 3 of a given thing each episode. Check it out! ¡NUEVO PROGRAMA!
Punished Maddie (othatsraspberry), joins us to look back on her highs and lows digging through the Metal Gear Solid series. We also talk planes, prepping for MGSCON 2, 10 years of fiddle remixes, planes, and working a booth at PAX East for Grasshopper Manufacture.
Is this guy's name seriously Travis Touchdown? The Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button sure seems to enjoy having our hosts jump into the middle of a franchise. This time the selection is the third numbered, but fourth chronologically in the hack and slash adventure series developed by Grasshopper Manufacture. For those unaware, the franchise began on the Wii in the days of rampant motion controls and then went on a bit of a hiatus until the Nintendo Switch arrived, allowing for a return to similar waggle-friendly mechanics. With that said, we are curious to see how those design choices are reconfigured on this port for PC and Xbox consoles. Combining traditional frantic beat ‘em ups with an aesthetic that borders on manic, we also wonder if it will seize the nostalgic minds of Tom and Chris or just leave them with seizures. Our hosts have played their hour and now they must convene to decide if it's worth at least a few of yours. Let's find out! What do you think? Let us know! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on 2008's survival horror in space, Dead Space. We talk about the ways we are maybe breaking the game a bit, art design, level design and camera framing, and sometimes... how it doesn't work. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Into Level 7 (Brett) or 4 (Tim) Issues covered: unkillable aliens, alien encounter tropes, taking themselves seriously, unknowable cosmic horror being taken seriously, dying again and again in a turret section, managing a lot in the asteroid section, being unable to learn a pattern, silence accentuating strangeness, building up to turning on the turret, the increasing grandiosity of set pieces, making set pieces last longer through difficulty, replaying areas in games and allowing that richness to carry you through, set pieces with cutscene rewards, the right mix in a set piece in the centrifuge, putting the character in unlikely places, breaking the game with the pulse rifle, the expectations of the space marine, good achievement design, getting rewarded similarly to a headshot, using stasis to learn where to shoot, fearing running out of upgrades, the suit design and the skeletal vertebrae, making Isaac look like he's in the same space as his suit, not feeling space, extra layers of geometry, repeating spaces to make things feel artificially familiar, framing doors so that you can see what you're doing next, not needing the breadcrumbs. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Visceral, Star Wars: Starfighter, Alien (series), Independence Day, Resident Evil 4, Event Horizon, Tom Cruise, Asteroids, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Dark Souls, The Last of Us II, Uncharted (series), Tomb Raider (series), Killer 7, Suda 51, Grasshopper Manufacture, Platinum, H. R. Geiger, Mystery Dip, Blarg42, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: Our last episode of play Errata: Brett was in fact on suit level 3. He regrets the error. It wasn't the original plan, but Ben convinced the infamous Aunt Norah to co-host with him this week! One could say it was “in the stars” so to speak. In the Venn diagram of the universe stars are celestial bodies and our word is a celestial body, but our word is not a star. Ben and Norah delve in to all of the things they can think of that relate to the word moon: common sayings, urban legends, movies, music, comic books, NASA, and video games. 00:02:05 - Starting the moon conversation with some measurements 00:05:35 - Unbeknownst to her, Norah is actually thinking of Whoopie Pies not Moon Pies 00:08:13 - “We don't keep score here at the Two Vague Podcast,” and moon the verb 00:11:00 - Is “moon face” insulting and what is anchor spleen? 00:13:00 - The moon movies “A Trip to the Moon” and “Outland” 00:17:30 - Did Norah watch the moon landing on television? 00:19:50 - Watching the Wizard of Oz while listening to Dark Side of the Moon 00:22:54 - Alan Parson's complete load of eye wash, and the Eye in the Sky album 00:26:15 - Jamiroquai, Titan AE, and Everybody's Going to the Moon 00:30:30 - The word honeymoon, and this month's Strawberry Supermoon 00:36:50 - The Artemis program, and Space Force on Netflix 00:41:10 - Ben talks about the Disney + series Moon Knight, and Dissociative Identity Disorder 00:48:05 - The arcade game Moon Patrol was the first game to use parallax scrolling 00:50:25 - Facts about Ben's favorite “angel killing witch wearing a suit of her own hair” game 00:55:20 - Ben loves Grasshopper Manufacture and Suda51 games 00:59:46 - Killer is Dead, malice, soft boiled eggs, and the Bryan Execution Firm 01:04:10 - Final thoughts on the moon, and “if the moon were made of cheese?

This week on The Free Cheese: we drink the elixir. Joe and Marc gather around the podcast table to talk about Super Mario Run and how Nintendo's fair plumber is doing on his first outing on our phones. We also talk about the new game from Grasshopper Manufacture, Let It Die, and how rad this unexpected game turned out to be. We play a little more Final Fantasy XV, but not enough to find our own Chocobo. Finally, we talk about which games we'd like to see get remastered or remade entirely before teasing our game of the year content.
Let. It. DIE. When does a series lose the sense of what makes it a series in the first place? The Resident Evil 7 demo comes to all platforms with an update...but is it really Resident Evil anymore? 2v1 thinks not. Nick is enraptured by the next Suda 51 and Grasshopper Manufacture joint: Let It Die - a free to play dungeon crawler (climber) with a ton of style and a skateboarding grim reaper. Alex picks up Saints Row 4: Gat Out of Hell and meets Shakespeare in eternal torment. Josh loves Batman: A TellTale Series (of course) and dips his toes into the Real Game that is Final Fantasy XV. Also discussed: Furi, Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain (spoilers kind of), Nintendo Switch on Jimmy Fallon and whether the retro resurgence is holding video games back. 2v1podcast.com feedback@2v1podcast.com twitch.tv/lostinacontraption Twitter/Instagram/Facebook: @2v1Podcast iTunes: apple.co/1IaaKUU
