The Ace Attorney games were an insane success, far beyond what Capcom could have predicted. After 4 mainline games in the series though, it was time for something new, and creator Shu Takumi refused to do anything normal. With a desire to explore characters in a far deeper way than was possible with Ace Attorney, he decided the only way to go about this was to have the main character be a ghost. Whether that made sense or not, in 2010 we finally saw the release of Ghost Trick, a game that is so wrapped up in mystery that it's almost impossible to spoil all of its revelations. The quirky characters, pacing and comedy of Ace Attorney was preserved, but it was replaced with entirely new gameplay mechanics with you manipulating the environment in subtle ways to change the outcome of deadly events. It was an undeniably unique and beautiful game, and one that had even better critical acclaim than even Ace Attorney. But with the Indie revolution churning out puzzle games like crazy, does Ghost Trick still stand out as an amazing game today? Do its characters still thrill and excite? Or is this style of storytelling and gameplay bloated and obsolete? On this episode, we discuss:PresentationHow does the music, characters and animation come together to create the feeling and atmosphere of Ghost Trick? Is this just another Ace Attorney game, or is it something fundamentally different?StoryGhost Trick goes to great lengths to ensure the player is following the story, with reiteration and flashbacks being core parts of its narrative. Is this too much, or is the story so complex that it needs this to keep people engaged? Is Ghost Trick meant to be played chapter by chapter, or binged for longer sessions?GameplayGhost Trick's objects are all manipulated and affected in unique ways, instead of being reused and acting consistently. How does this affect the puzzle design? Is is better to have unique objects that need to be understood, or repeated objects to better understand a broader puzzle solution? We answer these questions and many more on the 127th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherGhost Trick OST: Masakazu Sugimori Is Ghost Trick just another Ace Attorney Game? Is it just another Hitman game? Independent developer Airtight Games partnered with Square Enix around a decade ago to prove that the hardest murder to solve is in fact your own. In many ways, that is a factual statement. In relation to this game, however... not so sure. We're going back to 2014 to look at a third-person adventure game about a ghost detective. We're talking Murdered: Soul Suspect. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at Airtight's difficult beginning, middle and end, with some higlights including Dark Void and the Ouya. We also chat about how a considerable amount of this game's pre-launch marketing really positioned Murdered as a horror game, and Die Hard.In our review, you'll hear some chat on why this game even has stealth sections where you're bothering crows, hiding in spectral residue pockets, and sending demons back down to Hell via QTEs; escort missions where you must turn on specific printers and TVs; L.A. Noire; pixel-hunting at a crime scene and then selecting solutions until the game allows you to move on; Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective; the sheer possibilities of being a ghost vs a shoddy teleport or controlling a cat for a bit; ghost walls; reading the minds of Salem's residents; the newspaper that explains how the beach woman died so she can go to Heaven; a central mystery that does just about enough to keep the interest; a very normal Salem; a fancy hat, tattoos, and cigarette does not turn Ronan O'Connor into a protagonist for the ages; and Julia's Thoughts. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Murdered: Soul Suspect is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting CounterSpy on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

We begin this episode with a little bit of sad news: the Indiescovery podcast is going on hiatus, due to the fact that Rachel and Rebecca are both leaving Rock Paper Shotgun for pastures new. However, there's no need to be too downhearted, as your favourite indie-loving trio has every intention of continuing to collaborate on video game-related projects. Who knows, maybe we even drop a few subtle hints about what we've got planned next. Onto the episode proper: our first topic is a round-up of our recent experiences as jury members for Indie Cup UK '23, a festival celebrating indie game devs that ran throughout May and June. As jurors for the Critics' Choice award we enthuse over our shared love for the well-deserved winner VIDEOVERSE, before diving into our slightly more divided opinions on the category's other nominees, the highlights of which for us included Phoenix Springs, Full Void, Loco Motive, and No Body. Ultimately though we all agree that it was an incredibly strong showing all around, so our congratulations again to everyone who participated: not just the winners and nominees, but everyone who submitted a game for consideration, and indeed to the organisers! As you may be able to tell, we had a lovely time. Even though we could probably keep talking about the Indie Cup all day, we next turn our attention to another group who deserve our thanks and recognition: you, our dear listeners. To mark the end of the podcast's first season, we dive back into the mailbag and get very sidetracked while pondering some of your questions, including (but not limited to) the topics of our favourite very short indie games, and the genres we'd love to see enjoy an indie renaissance. We end, as ever, on our hyperfixations. Rebecca's been laid up with a fever and so has had the dubious luxury of reading and playing whatever she likes for a few days: Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, and the Animal Crossing: New Horizons manga series all emerged as comforting favourites. Liam puts in a good word for yet another rather sad book (Strong Female Character by Fern Brady) before really ramping up his efforts to make his co-hosts cry by listing off some of his favourite articles Rachel and Rebecca have written for RPS, the big loveable dork. He's also put the author of this synopsis in a very awkward position by promising links in the show notes, so here you go: Rachel: Why Citizen Sleeper's cast of interstellar nobodies matter A Space For The Unbound review: a supernatural teen romance with a wonderful sense of time and place TikTokers have created a player-generated RPG full of money-dealing cats, and it's absolutely wild Rebecca: Where are all the good Stephen King games? Returning to The Sims 1 in 2023 is a weird challenge I fully recommend A decade later, the Lutece Twins are still the best thing in BioShock Infinite Finally, Rachel unintentionally brings the season full-circle by talking about The Traitors Australia, the (you guessed it) Australian version of the social deduction TV show she was hyperfixated on when we recorded our very first episode. Featured Game Reviews: Final Fantasy XVI [Wikipedia] [IMDb] Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (2023) [Wikipedia] [IMDb] PROMO: Collateral Cinema Movie Podcast (@CCinemaPodcast) SHOWNOTES: Welcome back, gamers! Possibly a little late, but we have a double feature Game Launch episode for the first time on Collateral Gaming, as Ash reviews two titles in the last month, free of spoilers for anyone that hasn't had a chance to pick them up yet: Final Fantasy XVI and the remaster of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective! The sixteenth mainline entry of Square Enix's acclaimed fantasy RPG series (a timed exclusive on the PS5) has polarized fans of the franchise, as the self-proclaimed first "full-fledged" real-time action RPG of the core Final Fantasy games. Fans of traditional turn-based FF titles have been apprehensive of this direction to say the least, and yet the series' newest video game has been generating buzz for its fluid, Devil May Cry-esque combat and Game of Thrones-inspired dark medieval plot. On the other hand, Ghost Trick from the mind of Ace Attorney series creator Shu Takumi was a well-reviewed but oft-overlooked hidden gem from the end of the Nintendo DS lifespan. Now remastered and ported to modern consoles, how well are the fun mechanics, intricate story, and endearing characters of Capcom's 2010 puzzle adventure title translated for a broader audience? If you enjoyed this double review, let us know on social media or your platform of choice, and stay tuned for more post-season content before our two-part Season Six Premiere in September on Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales from Insomniac Games! Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. First things first, we ran into some technical issues with John's audio during this session, as I'm sure you'll notice right away! Once again, his computer has decided to record the audio from his built-in laptop mic — but the discussion here was too much fun to leave on the cutting room floor, so we're rolling with what we've got... With that out of the way, Randall gets things rolling this week with some final thoughts on the Resident Evil 4 Remake, before tossing the ball over to Kevin for a little more Capcom action with Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. From there, Kevin spends a little time *digging* into Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon after snagging it for half-off during a recent sale on Nintendo Switch. And finally, John & Randall close us out with an update on their adventures so far in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom... We have a guest on this week's Video Games 2 the MAX, as Kyle Simcox writer from theouterhaven.net (@TheOuterhaven) joins Sean and Marc to give his review of the PlayStation VR 2. He's also been playing Wild Hearts and Hogwarts Legacy too. Sean has initial impressions on Oni: Road to be the Mightiest Oni and he has final thoughts on A Space For the Unbound after beating the game. Also, he enjoyed the RE 4 Remake Chainsaw demo too. Marc also explores the wacky world of having a PS3 dev kit. In the news, the guys discuss the rest of the Capcom Spotlight with things like Exoprimal and Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective got release dates. The major delay for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Square-Enix once again announced a game, (Forspoken), that had lackluster sales. Starfield's release date. Ben is joined by Norah this week, and cooperatively they investigate this week's word. Things out a little slow conversationally, but then their on-brand rampant digression kicks in with topics such as television procedurals, the “cozy” genre of mysteries, the movie adaptation of Japanese author Kōtarō Isaka's black humour thriller novel “Maria Beetle,” Ben's favorite Chris Columbus movie script, and Scandinavian Noir. To close out the show, Norah listens intently while Ben talks about some of his favorite mystery themed point and click adventure games and Nintendo DS games from Capcom's Shu Takumi. In the final words, Norah includes a book series recommendation (Jutta Profijt's “Morgue Drawer”), and Ben casually endorses the television series “iZombie.” 00:00:21 - Surf's up in Chicago, 8AM installations, and what Norah is watching 00:04:27 - State of mind, predictability, life things, mysteries of the sexes, and pod people 00:07:21 - From digressions to definitions, the death of Raquel Welch, and Ox N. ¡Un poco tarde pero acá estamos! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a series on the Bullfrog classic Populous. Podcasting is a criiiiiiime, baby! Welcome back to NOCLIP! Today, we’re dusting off our DS to play Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, an underappreciated adventure game by the team responsible for Ace Attorney. As a very narrative-driven game, Ghost Trick comes off as wordy at times, particularly since the game uses no voice acting, but with the dialogue comes a lot of wit and charm that give the game its personality. The counterpoint to these sequences of dialogue are the actual puzzles, which see you manipulating objects in the environment to change the sequences of events leading to someone’s death. Due to your limited range of motion, only being able to jump between objects that are a short distance away, it gives a sense of urgency to the game’s sort-of-timed gameplay segments and creates a mechanical experience that is genuinely unique. The combination of these factors gives you a game that is exceedingly weird coming from a developer like Capcom, but also one that is interesting for all the right reasons. We’re going to be talking about the strange narrative conceit, expressive animation, and why your oral fixation could cause you to lose several DS styluses. Thank you for joining us today for the first full episode in this year’s Mystery May replacement series Nancy June. We’ll be back at the end of the month, assuming the stars align, with Kentucky Route Zero, a game we’ve been waiting literally years to finish.
Did you sleep well? No thanks to your podcasting, yes. Welcome back to a moderately special episode of NOCLIP! JJ has returned to discuss Halo: Combat Evolved. The first game in one of the unarguably largest game franchises in history, Halo really brought the first person shooter to consoles in a way that managed to popularize the genre much more universally than had been accomplished in the past. While this growth really hit a fever pitch with the accessibility of online multiplayer through Xbox Live, the single player campaign mode was still an expected and important part of a console game experience, and Halo delivered on that front and was probably most known for its creature design, protagonist and stunning outdoor vistas before the ubiquity of team deathmatch really took hold. And this is what we’re going to be talking about today. How does the campaign hold up under a modern lens, and what elements of design did they get so right to spawn such a monumental series? We’re going to be talking about the game’s presentation of it’s sci-fi plot through visuals and dialogue, the way the game diversifies its encounters with enemy AI and weapon availability, and discuss the existential horror of being caught in a “Womp loop.” Thank you so much for joining us today. Halo is a game that has been looming as one of the “must talk about” games since the beginning (along with a few others I’m sure you’re thinking of we haven’t covered yet), and I’m really happy with how it turned out. What do you think about Halo? Does it hold up to modern games, or even other entries in the same series? Do you feel like a badass because you have grenades that stick to stuff and have a twenty foot tall vertical leap? Join us in discussing the game on our Discord, or leave us a comment on YouTube, and make sure to subscribe, because we’re heading into Mystery May in June, "Nancy June," next time when we talk about Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.
