Skyscraper for less than a PlayStation? In this episode, Mikey breaks down how real estate is getting tokenized and what it actually is, how $50 buy-ins and weekly rent can work, and the traps to avoid if you're new to on-chain assets. What' you'll learn: Simple, non-tech explainer of blockchain (shared ledger) and NFTs as digital titles/receipts—not meme JPEGs.Fractional ownership: Tiny entry points, rental payouts (often in stablecoins), and how secondary markets enable exits.Real example: A tokenized single-family deal where dozens of everyday investors bought in and get rent distributions. Why it's getting big: Governments experimenting with records on-chain + major asset managers moving to tokenize traditional assets. Before you ape in: Regulations & accreditation rules, liquidity isn't guaranteed, smart-contract/hack risk, and leverage mistakes that wipe people out.Chapters0:00 The “skyscraper for a PlayStation” hook—why this matters1:55 Tokenization 101: blockchain & NFTs as titles4:05 Fractional ownership: $50 entries & rent payouts9:07 Real-world moves: public records on-chain, big money goes digital15:29 Risks & guardrails: regulation, liquidity, hacks, leverage

Selling a downtown office building in the Twin Cities— or anywhere— is no easy feat these days. Very few buildings have changed hands since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. Almost every successful sale of a downtown office building in the 2020s involved Harrison Wagenseil of commercial real estate firm CBRE's Minneapolis team. Wagenseil was part of the brokerage team behind the recent sale of the Wells Fargo and Ameriprise towers in downtown Minneapolis. He joined MPR News host Nina Moini to talk about what goes into selling a skyscraper, and why it's so difficult.
Skyscrapers aren't just engineering marvels, they're intellectual property battlegrounds where creativity meets the courtroom. Welcome to the fascinating world where distinctive buildings become trademarked brands, architectural blueprints trigger million-dollar lawsuits, and even tourist photographs might infringe copyright. Our journey begins with trade dress protection for buildings so distinctive they function as logos. The Hard Rock Hotel's 450-foot guitar shape earned trademark protection for being "inherently distinctive." At the same time, the geometrically interesting Palacio del Rio learned the hard way that being architecturally notable isn't enough, you need instant brand recognition. When your building makes people stop and stare, it might just be eligible for trademark protection. We then explore the often-overlooked protection for architectural plans. Blueprints aren't merely technical documents but creative works with automatic copyright protection. From the UK to Canada to Australia, courts have awarded substantial damages when developers use another's plans without permission. The message is clear: copying isn't just copying and pasting, using someone's creative layout without authorization is litigation waiting to happen. The laws governing the photography of buildings create another layer of complexity. "Freedom of panorama" determines whether you can snap, share, or sell images of buildings in public spaces, with drastically different rules worldwide. The Eiffel Tower exemplifies this peculiar legal landscape, the structure itself is in the public domain. Still, its twinkling lights remain under copyright protection, meaning your nighttime Paris photo could technically require permission for commercial use.Perhaps most fascinating is the tension between owning a building and owning its design. When a Brazilian paint company used a home's image on product labels with the owner's permission but without consulting the architect, the courts sided with the architect. Similarly, when a German museum planned renovations requiring the removal of an architectural art installation, the Federal Court had to weigh property rights against creative moral rights.Whether you're an architect protecting your vision, a developer navigating permissions, or simply someone who appreciates beautiful spaces, understanding these intersecting legal frameworks helps you navigate the built environment more responsibly. Because great design deserves more than admiration, it deserves legal protection, proper credit, and sometimes, a really good lawyer.Subscribe now to explore more intellectual property frontiers where creativity and commerce collide in unexpected ways.Send us a text
It's just Kevin and Lauren this week and they came prepared. They talk about Life of Chuck, Cleaner, Materialists, The Swarm, and Equals. Lauren kicks off the show with a largely positive review of the new Mike Flanagan/Stephen King joint, The Life of Chuck. Putting those two men together you'd think this would be a horror fest, but it's a poignant film about a man's life. Early comparisons were drawn to The Shawshank Redemption, but Lauren feels this movie doesn't quite have that same depth. All in all, it's still a good movie and worth a watch. Speaking of good movies, Kevin didn't bother to watch any this. Instead, he kicks off his first of two “I watched it so you didn't have to” segments with Cleaner on MAX. This is Die Hard clone that lacks much of the DNA that made that film great. It's not necessarily a bad film, but you'd do better with the OG. It stars Daisy Ridley as a former soldier turned window cleaner who gets stuck outside her building when eco terrorists take over. She's forced to battle her way back inside (which takes far too long) so that she can save the day because, of course, the entire police force is unable to breach the building. Look, it's better than Skyscraper, so there's that… We flip back to goodness with Lauren's review of Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and some guy named Pedro Pascal. It's a love story and billed as a RomCom, though Lauren and Kevin discuss the fact that it's less funny and more thoughtful than most, leaving it a bit in the ratings limbo. Folks going to see a Failure to Launch type movie are coming out disappointed. That said, it's a really good movie about love and self discovery and is well worth a watch. Just go in with more grounded expectations. Let's talk about expectations for a second. Have you ever seen the trailer or poster for something ad said to yourself, “that's going to suck”? A wise person would not watch said offering. But Kevin has no fear. On HBO, he came across the series The Swarm and it's… well… not good. It's not about a killer swarm of bees. That would make sense. It's about an underwater hive mind turning everything in the ocean against humanity. Think The Abyss, but globally, and much, much worse. At its core, it ends up being a neat concept but a very poor offering overall. Getting into the spirit, Lauren closes the show with a review of the film, Equals. It stars Nicolas Holt and Kristen Stewart and that's about where the good part ends. It's a futuristic society where people have been stripped of emotion and if you develop emotions, you get wiped. Our two stars develop emotions (obviously) and fall in love (obviously-er) which leads to them struggling to escape this world so they can be together. It ends on a semi tragic, semi vague note that leaves you wondering, “why did I do this?” As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! While our host enjoys some well-earned R&R, we're cracking open the Six Figure Trucker vault to revisit one of our most powerful conversations. We've got part two of our conversation with Peter Rizzo. As you heard last week, Peter is one of our top drivers and one that excels in logistics. In part two, we dive into Peter's incredible backstory. Before he was a fixture in a Big Rig, our guest today spent most of his days in the Big Apple. As a kid growing up playing basketball on the streets of Long Island, 6 foot 8 inch Peter Rizzo was often called a “Skyscraper.” He went on to play hoops in college before returning to the City as a police officer in the land of skyscrapers. But, within his first few months on the job, two of those towers came down. But, when the unthinkable occurred, Peter Rizzo joined his comrades and jumped straight into the fire to do what he could to rescue lives and restore a city. We thank him for his service, and we're honored to revisit this conversation today as he shares some of his memories of that time on the force with the NYPD. Don't miss this conversation with one of our nation's finest on this episode of the #SixFigureTrucker The Six-Figure Trucker is a weekly podcast about driveaway trucking brought to you by Norton Transport. In 1932, a photo was taken showing 11 New York ironworkers casually eating their lunch while sitting on a steel beam at the top of a skyscraper. No safety harnesses, no helmets. Their legs dangle freely over the death-defying drop.'Lunch Atop a Skyscraper' is now one of the most famous pictures in the world but it's an image surrounded in mystery. For years, the identity of its photographer and the 11 men have been unknown.Christine Roussel, archivist at the Rockefeller Center, tells Vicky Farncombe about her mission to uncover the photo's secrets.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia.
