Did you know that medieval Bologna, Italy, was once packed with towering skyscrapers? These towers dominated the skyline, with the tallest reaching over 300 feet high! Today, only about 20 towers remain, with the iconic Asinelli and Garisenda towers standing as symbols of Bologna's rich history. And it's far from being the only place from the past with amazing secrets that will boil your brain even today. Let's dive into a journey through time - are you ready? Mark Thornton opens this episode with a strategic assessment of the war's economic fallout: not the headlines, but the second- and third-order effects that are only now becoming visible. Oil production facilities across the Gulf have been destroyed, disrupted, or shut down, and restarting them is not a matter of flipping a switch. Some older wells will need to be redrilled entirely. Meanwhile, the disruption to fertilizer production threatens the next crop season and potentially longer-term food prices worldwideMark also provides a skyscraper curse update: the Jeddah Tower, once expected to reach record height in early 2027, has been pushed further out as Saudi finances and Gulf logistics are redirected toward reconstruction. The commodity super cycle thesis, he argues, remains fully intact despite the gold correction. The second half features a detailed interview from Palisades Gold Radio in which Mark unpacks these themes further, covering the Austrian micro approach versus the Keynesian macro framework, why the stock market can hit all-time highs while the real economy deteriorates, and why the world is slowly but steadily moving back toward commodity money.2026 is the Year of Rothbard—Murray's 100th birthday—and we're celebrating by giving away free copies of Anatomy of the State through May 31. And should this movie have more of them? You've seen us do this exact type of movie with Moonfall, San Andreas, Skyscraper, etc., yet here we are. What is the order of command for the United States if high ranking officials died? Why is the song Rocket Man so funny? Can you build a kosher Sukkah on a high-rise balcony or platform sandwiched between two towers that cast constant shade? This shiur explores the “Sukkah between skyscrapers” through Sukkah 2a (why above 20 amot/amos is pasul), weighing the sevarot of lema'an yeidu/shaltah einayim, R' Zeira's shade-of-walls vs. shade-of-schach, and Rabba's diras arai vs. diras keva, and applies Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 633 with Mishnah Berurah to show we do not rule like R' Zeira, bolstered by the valley/ashros kanim case. Practical takeaway: an urban balcony Sukkah is generally valid if the schach is under open sky and meets standards (tzilata merubah, 10 tefachim walls, etc.), even if it sits mostly in the buildings' shadow—key for apartment buyers in Israel, Manhattan, and other dense cities.

To accomplish your dreams and your goals, you need courage. What holds us back from taking action isn't ability. It is fear rooted in limited beliefs. In this episode, Lisa explores why we shouldn't interpret fear as a time to stop, but as a time to keep going. This topic is inspired by Skyscaper on Netflix, a documentary following Alex Honnold as he free climbs a 101-story building. As Lisa watched the live stream of Alex's ascent, she was intrigued by his commentary on fear and courage. She outlines three important lessons she learned while watching. Lisa parallels Alex's ability to do things that scare most people to real-life situations, inspiring you to do what feels hard or uncertain. If you want to make changes in your life, but fear has you paralyzed, this episode is for you. Tune in to gain insights on releasing fear and letting courage take over so you can hit your goals.

“Prahlada Maharaja replied: Because of their uncontrolled senses, persons too addicted to materialistic life make progress toward hellish conditions and repeatedly chew that which has already been chewed. Don and Dude crash into the second round of March Metal Madness where glitter, hairspray, and street‑corner hooks square up against steel‑toed stomp and Texas‑born groove. Skyscraper choruses, talkbox licks, mosh‑pit breakdowns, and arena‑ready riffs drive a bracket showdown between a late‑80s glam breakthrough and the record that dragged metal out of the Sunset Strip and into a heavier, meaner decade. The Albums Skid Row – Skid Row (1989) Young Jersey upstarts turn the glam formula meaner and more grounded, stacking blue‑collar storytelling, towering Sebastian Bach vocals, and streetwise riffs into a sleek debut that feels more alleyway than catwalk.Pantera – Cowboys from Hell (1990) Former glam lifers slam the door on their past and invent their future with precision riffs, machine‑tight rhythms, and swaggering grooves that reset how heavy metal could punch, swing, and strut at the same time.Diggin' AlbumsWilliam Crighton – Further Down the Road (2026) Australian folk‑rock storyteller stretches his baritone over spacious, atmospheric arrangements that move at a slow burn, turning journeys through the outback and inner life into something that feels mystical and lived‑in.Richard Marx – Richard Marx (1987) Chart‑ready 80s pop rock in its purest form, all gleaming guitars, radio‑perfect hooks, and power ballads that prove craft and polish can still hit like personal confession.Ladytron – Paradises (2026) Liverpool synth lifers lean into bright club rhythms and detailed electronics, pairing cool, detached vocals with disco‑tinted grooves that feel like dancing through neon at the end of the world.Tommy Emmanuel – Living in the Light (2025) Fingerstyle wizardry meets song‑first warmth as Emmanuel tracks mostly live in the studio, letting ringing acoustic lines, subtle band touches, and a generous spirit turn technical fireworks into something intimate.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“I detest the phrase ‘hair band' or ‘hair metal.' Discover what it takes to raise over $3 billion in capital and revitalize more than $2 billion worth of historic skyscrapers and iconic city blocks. In this episode, Tom “The Skyscraperguy” Liravongsa, managing partner of Landmark Collection, shares the remarkable journey that took him from starting a fund with negative $10,000 on a credit card to acquiring and restoring landmark skyscrapers across major U.S. cities. Tom reveals how mastering institutional underwriting, understanding the mechanics of syndication, and thinking beyond “the zeros” allowed him to transition from trading derivatives to orchestrating massive real estate projects. He also explains why skyscrapers—assets once reserved for institutional players—are becoming accessible to new investors, how large-scale developments create powerful economies of scale, and why cities and density provide a unique form of market insulation during economic disruptions. For investors and entrepreneurs who want to think bigger about capital raising, deal structuring, and transformative real estate opportunities, this conversation delivers insights you won't hear anywhere else. 5 Key Takeaways from the EpisodeCapital Raising Is the Core of Commercial Real Estate Tom explains that at its core, commercial real estate is about syndication—raising capital, finding deals investors believe in, and executing them together. Institutional Knowledge Creates Massive Advantage By underwriting billions in real estate projects while working with European investors, Tom learned how institutional capital flows and used that knowledge to scale his own deals. Large Deals Can Reduce Risk Through Scale While skyscraper projects involve large numbers, Tom argues that economies of scale, performance bonds, and professional teams can actually mitigate risk compared to smaller projects. Skyscrapers Offer Unique Market Insulation Because they exist in dense urban centers where economic activity is concentrated, skyscraper assets can benefit from strong demand, higher rents, and greater government support during crises. Retail Investors Can Participate in Institutional Deals Through modern fundraising methods, social media reach, and flexible deal structures, Tom is opening access to skyscraper investments that were historically limited to institutional capital. Alex Honnold, the world's most accomplished free solo climber and subject of Oscar-winning Free Solo, just climbed Taipei 101 live on Netflix. In this special live podcast event—our first with a studio audience—we go behind the spectacle to explore what really happened on that building: the unexpected challenges and the mental shift that transformed pressure into joy. We discuss his training philosophy at 40, his evolving relationship with risk and mortality as a father, and why he challenges our arbitrary definitions of what's "dangerous" vs. "normal." Along the way, he makes us examine our own relationship with fear, discomfort, and living in alignment with our values. Alex unites and inspires us all. This conversation illustrates why. Enjoy! Happy National Clean Out Your Computer Day! We start the episode by reflecting on the trauma of losing digital files and Erin's current state of being on her "proverbial deathbed" with a mystery illness (shoutout to Pedialyte and Motrin). We recap the recent snowstorm, which featured Dan hitching a ride on a snowmobile to ski down a neighbor's hill, a MacGyver-style ski boot repair using a leather belt, and the stark contrast between our silent icy roads and the "vibey" snow day parties at the Philadelphia Art Museum. In pop culture and documentaries, we discuss the anxiety-inducing Netflix livestream of a Alex Honnold free climbing the Taipei 101 skyscraper and review the Brian Johnson anti-aging documentary, debating whether living forever is worth eating "veggie mush" every single day. We also dive into the "New England Patriots Catering Menu" TikTok that revealed the insane amount of food available to players, from omelet stations to endless tables of silver warmers. Finally, we cover a massive wave of Olympic news: the "Good Billionaire Boy" Ross Stevens donating $100 million to support Team USA athletes, Lindsey Vonn's heartbreaking crash just a week before the games, and some mind-blowing stats about the Opening Ceremony in Milan. We also share skeleton racer Mystique Ro's hilarious description of her sport as a "penguin with no brakes," break down Sha'carri Richardson's arrest for speeding, and issue a simple demand: Free Darius.

The Junkies are in awe that Honnold not only tried the feat, but successfully completed it!
With just minutes to go, Netflix and Alex Honnold made the decision to postpone his scheduled and heavily promoted ‘Skyscraper Live’ event Friday night. So this evening, we will all be holding our collective breaths and watching as the 40 year old Free Solo climber takes on one of the tallest buildings in the world, without ropes, in front of the world. While there will be a 10 second delay for the live broadcast, the stakes are high, one wrong move may mean the difference between life and death.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
