The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: The gun lobby's interventions in Canadian politics are not new, but in recent years their rhetoric and tactics have more closely mirrored America's gun lobby. Are we following in their footsteps? GUEST: Dr. Najma Ahmed is a Canadian trauma surgeon and a Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto, and founder of Canadian Doctors for Protection from Guns - The leaders of Canada's major grocery chains insist that food price inflation is not caused by profit-mongering and that their margins on food-related profits have remained low. The CEOs and presidents of Loblaw Cos. Ltd., Metro Inc. and Empire Co. Ltd. -- which operates chains including Sobeys, Safeway and FreshCo -- appeared Wednesday in front of a parliamentary committee that is studying inflated grocery prices. Their testimony came amid calls from federal politicians, including Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, for the industry to be more transparent about what is driving its record-high profits. GUEST: Ian Lee, Associate Professor with the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University - Trudeau said he was never briefed on the issue, and his security adviser has dismissed it out of hand, but two high-level national security reports before and after the 2019 election suggest they were warned that Chinese government officials were funnelling money to Canadian political candidates. The two intelligence reports, from 2019 and 2022, raise questions about what senior federal officials knew about the alleged funding by a foreign interference network and how seriously the Trudeau government took the warnings. GUEST: Elliot Tepper, Emeritus Professor of Political Science with Carleton University

The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Hamilton is no longer Canada's “preferred candidate” for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, according to the organization trying to secure the national bid for the event. In a letter to the committee trying to secure the bid for the city, Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) cited a failed effort in getting government support as the reason for the dismissal. GUEST: Rich Gelder, President of the Hamilton Olympic Club and former candidate for Hamilton City Council - Members of Parliament have summoned the heads of Canada's largest grocery store chains to answer for rising food prices. On Monday, a House of Commons committee studying food price inflation called on the CEOs and presidents of Loblaw Companies, Metro and Empire Company Limited -- which operates chains including Sobeys, Safeway and FreshCo -- to attend an upcoming meeting. The proposal to hear from the industry leaders came from NDP MP Alistair MacGregor, and it received unanimous support from Liberal, Conservative and Bloc Quebecois MPs on the committee. GUEST: Marvin Ryder, Professor with the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University - Fighting one Cold War was bad enough. Waging two at once would be impossible. This comes as the U.S now faces simultaneous showdowns with China and Russia. GUEST: Wayne Petrozzi, Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Toronto Metropolitan University
Some stores across Canada owned by Empire Company Ltd. continue to experience disruptions due to an information technology systems issue. Empire, which owns Sobeys, Lawtons, IGA, Safeway, Farm Boy, Foodland and FreshCo, among other brands, said on Monday that an IT problem is preventing some of its pharmacies from filling prescriptions. Alex was joined by Dr. Sylvian Charlebois, Professor of Food Policy and Distribution and Director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University, to discuss the impact this will have on Canadians.
On this episode of Business Class: Build It Braver, we discuss managing your business while experiencing supply chain challenges. Featuring Mandy Rennehan, Blue-Collar CEO™ & founder of Freshco.ca (not the grocery store!!) in conversation with Krys Lunardo, the co-founder and CEO of Sistine, an eco-conscious skincare brand. To learn more from this episode, visit us at Business Class. She's smart, wickedly funny and totally down to earth, and she's the Blue-Collar CEO. Mandy Rennehan, the founder of multimillion-dollar retail renovation company Freshco (not the grocery store!), is well known for her authenticity, sense of humour and for championing women in a male-dominated industry. In this candid conversation, Mandy – who has a show coming out this spring with HGTV and a soon-to-be-released book from HarperCollins – talks to Jen and Catherine about the entrepreneurial ambitions that emerged when she was a child in rural Nova Scotia, the power of ambition, and the importance of listening, learning and being accountable.
This one's been a long time coming, but we've finally made it through to the midway point of the first decade of the new millennium. This period in the Street's history saw a rise in the number of issues-based stories, such as Sarah-Louise's pregnancy and Internet stalker, as well as some well remembered darker moments, like the Richard Hillman saga, the Freshco's siege and Alma's tragic demise. Despite all this though, there was still a lot to laugh about - who can forget Les and Cilla falling through the ceiling in their bathtub or Jack's turn as a member of the women's bowls team? We hope you enjoy listening to us reflecting on the period - both the highs and the lows.

NEWS ATTACK! A restaurant in Upstate New York is telling customers to stop hitting on the staff. Saratoga, New York's Broadway Deli wrote on Facebook: “This is a PSA for you thirsty bros out there: Stop asking out my staff while they're trying to work. Owner Daniel Chessare said that customers flirting with employees has been an occasional issue since the Jewish-style deli opened two years ago, but says it has intensified in recent weeks — though he's not sure why. Chessare said, “Staff come and go, so I'm not sure if it's because my staff now are particularly attractive or if it's because people aren't traveling, so these thirsty bros aren't on vacation somewhere else.” • https://www.facebook.com/SaratogaBD/photos/a.1790884924326376/3102523416495847/?type=3 (LINK) The Facebook post includes this advice: “If you are going to ask a girl out at least tip. How're you gonna look her in the eye, tap ‘no tip' on the tablet, then follow it up with ‘Hey baby, let's go out.' Cuz nothing says attractive like treating service people poorly.” - Researchers in northern Botswana have come up with a unique way to protect farmers' crops from elephants: disco lights. Lines of flashing multi-colored lights set up around farmers' fields near Chobe National park have been shown to be highly effective at scaring off elephants. The park is home to 7,500 elephants. It's the site of a floodplain whose nutrient-rich soils are a draw to farmers. - A Toronto woman spotted a cleaner at a grocery store spitting on a towel and then wiping down grocery baskets with it. She got video of the incident at a FreshCo location. In the video, the employee is seen using a small white towel to wipe down baskets. At one point, he appears to spit into the towel and continues wiping down the baskets. After the customer reached out to the company's corporate office it said the employee works for a third-party service provider and that he is no longer working at the store. - A hair stylist in Virginia, who went above and beyond, was touched to receive a heartwarming letter from a widower. Sara Verkuilen received a personal note from the widower who said his wife, who had dementia, was delighted with her haircut. The letter writer, who didn't leave his name, wrote: “This is a little bit awkward. But I've waited a really long time to pass this on to you. My wife and I came in for haircuts shortly before Christmas of last year. My wife was suffering from dementia, and you treated her as if you'd been working with dementia patients all your life. You let us sit next to each other, and when it came time for her cut you turned her chair towards me so I could watch her expression as you cut her hair. Sadly, she died in March. And that haircut was one of the last, best moments of her life. She felt so pretty. She visited the mirror in her bathroom several times during the day and would come out beaming. To see her so happy was priceless. … I hope you always realize the power of your profession.” … Sara was moved by the letter and shared it on her Facebook, saying “This is why I love what I do.” - UK-based newspaper The Guardian says the government will launch an...

Corrie has been great these last few weeks and this trend continues as Jade finally reveals her true intent while Fiz’s worst nightmares (that don’t involve Tyrone) come true. Shona remains in a coma for another week and despite a brief standoff that everyone seems comfortable in letting pass, David eventually finds a decent ear attached to Aggie. Gemma and Chesney get some sleep in a fancy cottage while chaperones pretend to be them for a Freshco’s shoot, which results in Dev firing Ches twice in 24 hours. Roy has to listen to Aggie’s backstory and pretend that he cares. Tim’s Dad insults Yasmeen’s lovely cardigan. Gail confirms that brain stem activity is a good thing, Daniel’s beard is coming along, and Paula bathes in her work clothes, apparently.
On this episode of The Construction Record, staff writer Russell Hixson and digital media editor Warren Frey take a look at some of the recent stories they've covered, starting with Russell's article about British Columbia's construction industry looking at possible changes to the B.C. Lien Act after the British Columbia Law Institute proposed 80 improvements to the legislation. Russell also dives into Red Deer, Alta's proposals to increase residential development in its downtown after the city suffered from Alberta's economic downturn. Warren recently attended the Mechanical Contractors of Canada's annual conference in Nashville and has an interview with Mandy Rennehan, the CEO of Freshco and an advocate for the skilled trades and inclusion of underrepresented groups. Rennehan delivered the closing day keynote at the conference and stressed the importance of the trades to society and how in her view the sector doesn't get the respect it deserves. Warren also interviewed Jeff Sample from eSUB Construction Software, who addressed the conference on the latest technological innovations hitting the construction industry. He also spoke to the importance of people and processes over tech for tech's sake, and explained how as innovation accelerates, it also gets simpler to use. JOC News Service B.C. asked to weigh in on Lien Act recommendations Red Deer, Alta. forms plan to spur residential development Education, collaboration key to increasing trades diversity: Blue Collar CEO Tech will change construction but not without people and processes: Expert

In this episode, you'll hear from Alex Rice, President of Nova Scotia Spirit Company, and Mandy Rennehan, Founder of FreshCo, talk about building. Whether it’s building a company, a culture, or a community, these entrepreneurs have learned a thing or two about growing a business.
Twitter: @MandyRennehan Instagram: @Freshco_Inc Our guest is Mandy Rennehan. Mandy is known as the blue- collar CEO. She's an incredible Canadian who is entirely self-made. She left home towards the tiny town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia at 18 with just a dirty hockey bag and an audacious dream. A passion as well, I should add, for woodworking. By 19, she founded, Freshco which is now Canada's number one full service reconstruction and retail maintenance provider working for some of the biggest Fortune 500 companies: Nike, Apple, The Gap, you name it and Mandy's worked for them or is working for them right now. At 24, she signed her first $5 million deal and she's just gone up and up and up since then. She won a range of awards including the 2017 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Award. She's also been named EY Entrepreneur of the Year, and I could go on and on. She describes herself as a fun-long adventurer and a rule breaker and I think you're going to love her wicked sense of humour too. Here's Mandy Rennehan.
