With the Academy Awards ceremony right around the corner, we'll hear a classic Hollywood comedy recreated for radio. My Man Godfrey picked up six Oscar nominations along with critical acclaim and box office success in 1936. When The Lux Radio Theatre dramatized the film (originally aired on CBS on May 9, 1938), stars William Powell, Carole Lombard, Gail Patrick, and Mischa Auer were joined by David Niven for the story of a bum who becomes a butler overnight and starts a new life with a wealthy family.

Brigid O’Shaunessy under the name of Miss Wanderlee had employed private detective Sam Spade to locate her sister who had run off with a guy named Floyd Thursby. Spade’s partner Miles Archer was killed whilst trailing him and then Spade discovers that Miss Wanderlee is not who she claimed she was but one of many dubious characters Sam Spade becomes mixed up with all of whom are seeking a black statue of a Maltese Falcon. No More Ladies (1935) is a highbrow take on how to turn the tables on a cheating husband. It has style for days--in the dialogue, performances, fashion. Even better, the picture boasts a collection of sass mouth dames such as Edna May Oliver, Gail Patrick, and Joan Fontaine, in her screen debut. After Joan's through with Bob Montgomery, he's more submissive than the giant sheepdog on a leash.

Gregory La Cava se ríe de los poderosos, de abajo a arriba. Los cinéfilos aman las películas de La Cava, su comedia loca, su estilo basado en la elegancia y en la espontaneidad, su sátira, excelentes diálogos, su buen humor para presentarnos una familia de desquiciadas, comenzando por Irene, Carole Lombard genial, desorientada y carcajeante, la madre no dice ni una frase comprensible y Cornelia, la elegante y bella Gail Patrick, la hermana cínica y de aviesas intenciones. John Huston’s classic cinematic adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon comes to radio in this production of The Lux Radio Theatre. Though none of the film’s stars appear to recreate their roles, a terrific Hollywood cast is assembled to bring the story to life.
