In this episode, artist Gary Simmons and “Surviving R. Kelly” filmmaker dream hampton examine personal and collective memory, what we choose to remember, and what we choose to forget. Simmons reflects on how cultural memory—particularly through race and erasure—has influenced his work, from his iconic chalkboard drawings to his installations that blur the lines between representation and abstraction, while hampton considers the silencing of certain memories and the power of reclaiming erased narratives. The excellent catalogue was published by the VMFA, which offers it for $40. Instagram: Gary Simmons, Tyler Green.
Ben Luke talks to Gary Simmons about his influences—from musicians to writers, film-makers, and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Simmons, born in New York in 1964 and based in Los Angeles, is a significant figure in a generation of politically engaged, artistically ambitious US artists that emerged in the early 1990s. Gary explores the complexities of race and class through media including drawings on chalkboards, sculpture, installation, architectural environments and painting. He draws on diverse references, including from pop culture like cartoons and sports, to create works that address systemic and enduring prejudice and the nature of memory. Gary's language is deeply personal and informed by his own experiences but also calls on imagery with collective, if unstable, meanings.Gary Simmons: Public Enemy, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 13 June-1 October, Pérez Art Museum Miami, 5 December-24 April 2024. After a short break (life gets in the way sometimes!) we're excited to dive into Ta-Nehisi Coates' “Between the World and Me.” This National Book Award winning-novel is short but packs a punch. Written as a letter to his son and inspired by James Baldwin's “The Fire Next Time,” Coates writes about what it means to be Black in America. He weaves the personal anecdotes and stories into life lessons for his son as well as personal reflections we can all learn from. For this discussion, we are joined by Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) Director Franklin Sirmans and we touch upon what role education plays in our biases, reflect on what we learn at school versus what we don't, the humanist approach of museums, and more. Alexa pairs the wine with La Fête Blanc du Blanc, gifted by the amazing Ray Sholes @theroyalvines, certified sommelier and wine geek. PAMM artists mentioned in this episode: Leandro Erlich, Virginia Jaramillo, Firelei Báez, Bisa Butler, John William Bailly, Alfredo Jaar, Teresita Fernandez, Calida Rawles, Gary Simmons, and Antonia Wright. And to humor our PAMM in-house general counsel: The views, thoughts, and opinions expressed in this program are solely those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views, opinions, policies, or positions of any entities they represent.

In this episode, Ryan talks with Gary Simmons, TH.D. a renowned peacemaker and spiritual leader. We discuss: Gary speaks candidly about his personal quest to create a more connected sense of his own well-being and worthiness for himself in his life. The work is to recognize that whenever we are unhappy with how things are looking around us, it's a reflection that we are actually disconnected from our own authentic self and in turn our sense of well-being. Reconciliation Consciousness: The desire to take back what got created (in any past moment) from our own sense of disconnect or not enough and want to revisit that moment from a sense of wholeness and oneness- something shifts and our intention mirror itself back to us. Taking action that is opposite to our unconscious practices is to begin to wake up and recondition the body to a new mind. Ryan shares about the transformation, realizations, and awakenings he had by doing the Quantum Living Process with Gary after an all-time low point in his own life. We create our own personal reality by our own meaning-making and way of receiving our life. "How are you having your life right now?" We can choose to have our life as if it is FOR US, rather than against us by recognizing our survival strategies have unintended consequences that are not actually beneficial. Through the power of knowing our own worth- everything I have in life can always be my abundance. "The antidote to not enough is not getting more, it's BEing more." About Dr. Gary Simmons: Dr. Simmons' teachings and ground-breaking Integral Ministry program is transforming church organizations and helping church leaders energize their spiritual communities and expand their capacity to carry out their mission with greater integrity and congruence. While Dixon is believed to be involved, he is never tracked down and investigators suspect that Gary may have been the victim of an elaborate murder plot orchestrated by an unknown third party. WHEN THE KNIGHT FELL: PART 1-CLEAR'S RISE by Christopher Gary Simmons “When the Knight Fell” is a literary version of the modern musical. Follow characters Clear, Ego, Cash and Diamond on a theatrical odyssey inspired by the fictional tragedies of the Shakespeare cast Othello, Iago, Michael Cassio and Desdemona. Perceptions of race, class and societal norms are all challenged here. Imagine Othello reincarnated as a white minority navigating through the predominantly African American hip-hop community and culture of today. This book pays homage to a classic piece of literature by sparking our imagination and expanding our perspective. Author Christopher Gary Simmons elevates his unique style of spoken-word poetics by combining the story telling of William Shakespeare with the broken English of Langston Hughes. The rhythmic production used throughout the audiobook enhances the reading experience, creating a profound tribute to lyricists everywhere and our memory of the character Othello. This innovative project will move readers to connect with Shakespeare’s dramatic tale while being transported blissfully to a new level of melodic expression. Philadelphia native Christopher Gary Simmons is a humble graduate of Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and honored member of Villanova’s Executive MBA program. His appreciation for writing and lyrics knows no bounds. Raised in the golden era of hip-hop on artists that include Public Enemy, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Wutang, Nas, MosDef, and Jay-Z his love of lyrics was born from a love of stories. God willing, following “When The Knight Fell” Part 1: Clear’s Rise, all can look forward with excitement to the soon to be released conclusion Part-2: Clear’s Fall. Simmons is working to complete a 5-volume hip-hop / Shakespeare series containing musically re-imagined adaptations of Shakespeare plays Othello, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing. It is a concept that readers can grow with and support from beginning to end. His goal with this project is to help you find and share your own creative voice. www.writersrepublic.com http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/cgsimmons.mp3
Presented by Rev. Carolyn Swift Jones. Gary Simmons, the masterful author of The I of the Storm, writes: “Your real purpose is not about getting your way or about being right.” In these extraordinary and constantly shifting times, we may be reaching for security by “being right”, and name that as our purpose. Of course, there is a greater security available to us when give up being right so that we can be Love. Come and join us as we explore what it means to get out of the way so that we may become The Way. "Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark" is a stack of speakers constructed out of salvaged wood from post-Katrina New Orleans. Performers rearrange the speakers and play music. Videos of the performances play on a loop, and the cigarette butts and beer bottles from the audience are left in place. LA-based artist Gary Simmons, known for his "erasure drawings," explains how the installation ties together dub pioneer Lee "Scratch" Perry, the Coachella festival, and the "Shangri-la" quality of the area.
As we begin to do church around the purpose of transforming lives instead of doing church around the purpose of feeling better about ourselves, we in the community begin to feel a greater sense of empowerment, partnership, and ownership. This week, the Centre's transformation coach, Dr. Gary Simmons, visits to teach us how to not be triggered when we're judged. Knowing how is not enough to begin practicing not being triggered when someone judges us. We need to know why we should not be triggered. Right now we're living in a story of separation. But we're shifting into a world of inter-being, a shift to a context of wholeness, of oneness. When we are being judged, here is what we say: Tell me more. Why? Because the judgement is not about us. And we may find that behind every judgement is the gift of the revelation of an unmet need. But to get there, we need to stand in the place of "Tell me more."
This week, Dr. Patrick previews the upcoming weekend Genogram activity with Dr. Gary Simmons that will happen at the Centre. The Centre and its ministry has a history and thus a pain body. The purpose is to identify the unconscious patterns that drive or run our ministry when we are not conscious, as well as those patterns and the unintended consequences of the current way we do ministry in the minister-centric practice. We then seek to answer: Who did we come here to be? Why does the Centre exist? There are states of being and stages of being. A feeling of oneness is a state, and how we view it will be coloured by our stage of development. Limitation and poverty are not things but are the result of restricted ways of thinking. We are surrounded by a Subjective Intelligence which receives the impress of our thought and acts upon it. This natural Law in the Mental World is neither good nor bad. It can only be said of It that IT IS, and that we may consciously use It. The Law is a law of reflection; for Life is a mirror, reflecting to us as conditions the images of our thinking. Whatever one thinks tends to take form and become a part of his experience. The Medium of all thought is the Universal Mind, acting as Law. Law is always impersonal, neutral, receptive and reactive. Look into the mirror with love.

Dr. Gary Simmons, co-creator of the Q Process, speaks today on the Shadow Effect. The world is changing. Are we on the transition team yet? Sometimes we are being the somebody that is not the truth of us. So in the Q Process, we explore the ways to release our own limiting beliefs and bring forth greater awareness of the dimension of ourselves that is infinite and eternal, to co-create a new world. We have been sent to be the One unto our own life.
Carl Jung said, "Until we make the unconscious conscious, it will direct our lives and we will call it fate." He also said, "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves." We all have triggering moments. These give us the opportunity to learn something about ourselves. When we feel uncomfortable or troubled, we are out of alignment with the truth of our being. The Q Process, by Dr. Gary Simmons, helps us work through our triggers and aspects of our shadow. "The One" video that Dr. Patrick plays is here.
This Sunday, 7 August 2017, our sermon was led by Gary Simmons entitled Faith In Action. Gary is the minister of our sister church Central Valley Church of Christ in Fresno. Recorded/Edited/Produced by: Chris Pontino Episode Song: Guardian by Hale
This Sunday, 4 September 2016, Gary Simmons of the Central Valley Church of Christ preached to us during our minister swap Sunday. Gary's sermon is entitled A Walk With God where he simply encouraged us to not to forget to walk with God and not get caught up in the things that can pull us away from God such as the responsibilities of life, life's issues, even church stuff and especially getting stuck in the trap of being distracted by what the words mean in the bible more so than allowing the bible to lead us to the real priority of having a relationship with God, walking WITH God and becoming like Jesus. Gary insists that there is a place for getting to the root of the scriptures and studying out the bible to it's intricate details about words and meanings, but it pales in comparison to the depths and intimacy of the relationship God so desperately pursues us for. We love the simplicity Gary as about to direct our faith in as he leaves us with four action steps to walk with God: 1. Make a decision to go on a walk with God 2. Take the first step 3. Don't quit the walk and 4. Trust God. Listen in for Gary Simmon's encouragement to go on A Walk With God!
