Document examiner Neil Holland has worked on documents related to investigations into alleged Nazi war criminals, accused killers and dodgy bookies, and resurrected the writing on a document found inside a corpse’s stomach. In 1985, when Neil was the head of the Victoria Police document examination branch, the National Gallery of Victoria made history - acquiring Pablo Picasso's The Weeping Woman. At $2 million, it was the most expensive artwork ever purchased by a gallery in Australia. Less than a year later, it was gone. Stolen in a daring heist that left police, the art world, and the media stunned. Eighteen days after the theft, Neil found himself in the back of a police van in the dead of night - cradling a brown paper package. Inside? The missing Picasso, taken hostage by a group calling themselves the Australian Cultural Terrorists. In this episode, he’s here to tell host Liz Porter the story.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Born in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa, Jacu Strauss' early years were marked by his imagination—crafting dollhouses from wine boxes and drawing urban streetscapes in the dirt. With limited access to TV or the internet, he turned to encyclopedias and magazines to fuel an inner world that laid the foundation for his future. At 18, he left for London on what was meant to be a brief gap year. It quickly turned into a journey through banking, architecture studies in New Zealand, and ultimately, back to the UK. His career took a turn when he joined Tom Dixon, where he helped dream up the transformative Sea Containers hotel. That philosophy continues to anchor his work as creative director at Lore Group, where he oversees a diverse portfolio of hotels. From the charming Pulitzer Amsterdam to the intimate sophistication of the Lyle in Washington, DC, Strauss designs with both whimsy and purpose—always seeking to humanize spaces through material, form, and story. This podcast is sponsored by StyleNations. The company has taken a particular interest in the potential of light, for medical and other, perhaps unexpected, uses. Todd's latest project is a book. Design in Context, which is out now, illustrates how design – and design-led thinking – has the potential to change and shape every facet of business. In this episode we talk about: generating value for different clients; the importance of collaboration; why he launched Betterlab; how he's using light to combat myopia; finding truth in design; how light becomes a material; learning to shape rather than style it; working with UVC and creating extraordinary products for health environments; leaving the US to study in Copenhagen; working in Milan; learning the ‘business of design' under Tom Dixon; and designing net positive furniture for Humanscale. Support the show

In some families, the parents' DNA instructs so clearly the way their children think and work that it's impossible to deny the familial impact. Jason Bruges is the product of just this. His dad was a software and computer engineer, and his mother a trained artist. Both influenced where and how he came to be a multidisciplinary artist and designer. His eponymous Jason Bruges Studio is internationally renowned for creating interactive spaces and surfaces that sit between the world of architecture, site specific installation art and interaction design. Considered a pioneer of this hybrid in-between space, Jason has subsequently paved the way for a new genre of design studios, artists and designer-makers. After graduating from Oxford Brookes University in London, Jason borrowed £1,000 from his dad for an airline ticket and flew to Hong Kong to meet his grandfather at the airport. He'd only met him a handful of times before. Within weeks he had a job offer from the famed architect Norman Foster. This later led to his role at the groundbreaking brand experience agency, Imagination back in London, where his work on the Millenium Dome was considered an early example of interaction design. It was soon after, in 2002, that Jason created his own studio. Listen in as Vince and Jason discuss how being noticed by Tom Dixon helped him start his studio, the influence of Jean Nouvel's animated façades, and designing a hotel lobby in 2002 that changed colour based on the clothes of guests passing through. https://www.jasonbruges.com/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The organisation opened its doors at the foot of West London's Trellick Tower in 2013 and makes high end furniture from wood – that has often been reclaimed or ‘treecycled' – in its workshop. Not only that but it has a showroom and cafe, as well as an academy that teaches marginalised young people the craft of wood working through its apprenticeship programme. It is a fascinating and, I think, important place. In this episode we talk about: how Trellick Tower shaped the business; making waste aspirational; bridging North Kensington's social divide; why Goldfinger works with wood; the relationship between wood and wellbeing; the importance of ‘treecycling'; collaborating with the likes of Arup and Tom Dixon; her fascination with food and setting up the cafe; the once a month community meal; how the pandemic changed the People's Kitchen model; working with young people in the academy; how the social enterprise has changed over the past decade; Goldfinger's future. Our thanks go to the headline sponsor for this series of the podcast – and the Material Matters 2023 fair – the brilliant lighting specialist, Bert Frank. Tom Dixon on Designing With Longevity in Mind

The renegade British designer Tom Dixon has long had a roving obsession with raw materials—everything from cast iron, steel, and copper; to clay, glass, and stone; to felt, plastic, and marble; to, more recently, cork and aluminum. Entirely self-trained and without any formal design education, Dixon emerged in the design sphere in the 1980s by creating unusual welded salvage furniture that was at once antique, experimental, beautiful, and punk in spirit. Never short of bold, forward-looking ideas, Dixon works from a materials-first perspective. Over the years, he has created an industrial chair with upholstery inspired by the rubber inner tubing of car tires, furniture made of flame-cut steel, and even conceptual pieces grown underwater and built of Biorock. Central to all that he does is a quest for longevity and, in turn, sustainability; he has even, in the past, toyed with the idea of a thousand-year guarantee. On the episode, Dixon talks about how two motorbike accidents transformed his life, his days in the early 1980s as a bass player in the disco-funk band Funkapolitan, why he considers cork a “wonder material,” and the parallels he sees between his design creations and those of a baker.Special thanks to our Season 7 sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes: [00:56] Tom Dixon[07:02] Flame-Cut Furniture[11:27] Design Miami[12:06] Craig Robins[13:50] Wolf Hilbertz[31:14] S-Chair[34:41] Giulio Cappellini[35:12] Marc Newson[35:15] Jasper Morrison[38:56] Isamu Noguchi[38:56] Akari Light Sculptures[39:57] Constantin Brâncuși[40:33] Dixonary[46:34] Funkapolitan[49:16] Funkapolitan's “If Only”[49:17] Funkapolitan's “In the Crime of Life”[50:17] August Darnell[53:56] Guy Pratt[53:58] Rockonteurs with Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt[54:50] Creative Salvage[01:01:06] IKEA[01:03:37] Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec[01:03:50] Enzo Mari[01:03:51] Achille Castiglioni[01:03:52] Verner Panton

Introducing Tom Finn & Kristoffer Sølling. They're the founders and directors of Regular Practice - one of my favourite up & coming branding agencies and one of It's Nice That's One's To Watch. Based of Broadway Market in London's Hackney. Despite working with big businesses like Fred Perry, Tom Dixon, Acne Studios and Tom's - their specialism comes from variety - working across multiple categories and life stages. From fashion and art, to F&B, hospitality, tech and beauty - using the learnings from one category to push boundaries in the next. Rejecting convention in favour of innovation. They've also worked for and with a number of People Doing Things alumni including Mob Kitchen on Peckish, their app for real foodies and Juiced, their talent agency. As well as travel guide, Step and a soon to be released rebrand for social media agency Spin Brands with more in the pipeline. What I particularly value and respect is their ability to combine top-class design rigour with a youthful energy and expression. Hailing from the art world, not the agency world - Tom & Kristoffer have fought hard to earn a seat at the branding table; bringing a sense of hard work, humility and a generous dose of underdog spirit to all they do. Reflected in their eponymous namesake - Regular Practice. In this episode we reflect on how they've got to where they are today, the type of agency they are trying to build and how artificial intelligence and technology is changing how we create and interact with the brands of tomorrow. If you don't know your dielines from your wireframes then this ones for you. Enjoy.

Introducing David Begg. His career to date has been nothing short of illustrious. After studying engineering at Durham and Cambridge, he spent ten years in consulting before becoming one of the founding team members of Booking.com. He then went on to co-found Tom Dixon and education tech company Magic Town before finding his spiritual home in REAL Sparkling Tea. According to the sommeliers at The Fat Duck, REAL is the ‘finest non-alcoholic drink on the market'. Brewed with some of the most expensive teas in the world, REAL's impressive array of sparkling teas are more akin to a natural wine or a champagne than a soft drink. The complexity of the fermented drink is perfect for food pairings - cutting through fatty acids with tannins that help counteract sweet foods and a sweetness that softens salty and savoury meals.  It's taken the team over two years in the making to achieve the quality and consistency with their hard work being recognised by over 50 Michelin star restaurants including The Pig, La Gavroche and Clove Club, as well as stockists like Waitrose.  In this episode we talk about how a chance encounter with homebrewed kombucha has transformed into a multi-million pound opportunity, creating the UK's first standalone non-alcoholic Fermentery and where the palettes of top restaurateurs and sommeliers are taking us.  Cheers.

While Tom Dixon is a household name in British design, and even a living, breathing symbol of the country's aesthetic today, there is no denying that he has forever been a true original.Born in Tunisia, and raised in Morocco and Egypt before moving to England, Dixon's exotic early influences ignited a quest for a new way of seeing and, in due course, of making. This drive has taken him around the world in search of inspiration, channeling creative awakenings into luxurious light fixtures and free spirited furniture. Tom filled us in on the highs and lows of the convergence of Covid and Brexit, which led not only to supply chain disruptions, but also to an intense period of creation in a green house owned by the oldest orchid business in the world, which revived the kind of play intrinsic to his early career. We discussed the beauty to be found in the first of something, being motivated by surprises, and why you should go to as many parties as possible. My House Guest this week is Tom Dixon, known as a restless innovator who rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as a maverick, untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture. While working with the Italian giant Cappellini he designed the widely acclaimed ‘S' Chair and Creative Director at Habitat rejuvenating the brand while maintaining Terence Conran's vision of enriching everyday life through simple, modern design. In 2007, he launched Design Research Studio, a design and innovations agency at the heart of Tom Dixon, now based at Coal Office in London's King's Cross, which operates as an office, shop, workshop and restaurant all under one roof. We chat about his love of making things, which includes food, hence his collaboration with chef Assaf Granit - Coal Office is their food and design playground, rich in material, style and flavour. He also has a wry take on his early designs: ‘After 20 years in the business, I still feel young and there's a lot to do, it's both fabulous and depressing that my stuff is now being sold in antique shops and occasionally a car boot sale'.
