In this episode of School Safety Today by Raptor Technologies, host Dr. Amy Grosso interviews Chief Ronald Applin, Chief of Police at Atlanta Public Schools. The conversation centers around the department's unique approach to law enforcement, focusing on student well-being, mental health, and reducing the school-to-prison pipeline. Chief Applin explains how the department addresses the gap in law enforcement services, with an emphasis on restorative practices and positive behavior interventions, aiming to ensure that students are not criminalized for issues that can be addressed through support and guidance. KEY POINTS: How they use restorative practices to help address issues while holding students accountable for their actions. Providing specialized training in mental health first aid, social-emotional learning, and crisis intervention to enable officers to be guardians alongside being a warrior. Using an Intervention Specialist to change the trajectory of students' lives. Building strong officer relationships with students, often acting as mentors and engaging in non-custodial conversations that help foster trust to increase school safety. Our guest, Chief Ronald Applin, Chief of Police, Atlanta Public Schools, has over 32 years of law enforcement experience. After completing boot camp for the United States Marine Corps, he served in the Marine Corps Reserves for 6 years. He simultaneously began his career with the Fulton County Sheriff's Office in 1989 and retired in 2010 at the rank Captain. During his tenure at the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, he commanded the day-to-day operations of the Law Enforcement Division, SWAT Team, oversaw the implementation of 911 services for the City of Chattahoochee Hills and served as the Venue Commander for the 2008 Brian Nichols Trial. In 2011, he became a faculty member with Reinhardt University Public Safety Institute, where he continues to serve, teaching undergraduate and graduate level criminal justice courses. He also taught in the Law and Justice Program at Creekside High School. His love for public safety led him to accept an offer to serve as the Director of Security at Landmark Christian School in 2013. The experiences gained in this position prepared him for the highlight of his law enforcement career—being selected as the Chief of Police for the newly created Atlanta Public Schools Police Department. As a product of the Atlanta Public School System, Charles Lincoln Harper High School 1986 graduating class, this was a full circle moment for him. Chief Applin earned a Bachelor of Science Social Science in Criminal Justice from Mercer University, Master of Public Administration from Troy University, and has completed all coursework, with the exception of a dissertation, for his PhD in Criminal Justice from Capella University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy 220th Session and a graduate of the inaugural class of Mercer University's Public Safety Leadership Institute. Chief Applin's leadership and professionalism extend beyond the halls of the schools he serves. He is an active member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP), International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Georgia Alliance of School Resource Officers and Educators (GASROE) Board of Directors, National Center for School Safety Advisory Board, Landmark Christian School Board of Directors and Atlanta Technical College Criminal Justice Program Advisory Committee, Graduate of the United Way VIP 2021.

Expert witnesses emphasized that these failures are systemic and not due to individual caseworkers. Sen. Ossoff stressed the need for long-overdue reforms to protect vulnerable children. Based on testimony from former Meta employees, the complaint claims the platforms' algorithms push users into harmful behavior. The end of Disney+'s latest Star Wars show, Ahsoka, left characters with unfinished arcs. Ahsoka and Sabine are trapped on another planet, and Baylon is still searching for a raw power trembling through the force. Baylon is shown standing on the outstretched hand of a mountain-sized sculpture, gazing into the distance. Fans of the Clone Wars recognized the face of the statue as The Father, a force god who controls the balance between his son and daughter. The Son represents the dark side of the force and the Daughter symbolizes the light side. On this episode of the Smugglers' Galaxy podcast, Glen and Jason revisit the Mortis arc of The Clone Wars in an attempt to theorize where future tales from the Star Wars galaxy might be heading. What role do these force gods play? Their fates seemed wrapped up in The Clone Wars, so how can it expand further? Additionally, the Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors had a meetup at Second Chance Toys and Collectibles. The hosts share their experience from that gathering. They also share the first scheduled panel for Rogue Fun, a sold out convention scheduled for next spring. This years event was held a super-collector, and generous spirit, Narayan's house. Glen and Jason, fresh from the event, discuss the games, toys, special guests, and tireless nights, that went into this event! Friday started with a group dinner with dessert. Saturday was the action-packed social, with a special presentation from a toy creator, room sales and more, and Sunday was the Kennesaw Run, a collection in three houses about 10 miles from one another. Glen, Tim, and Jason open up their collection so people can check them out at their pace during the morning hours! In addition to that, they talk the Ahsoka trailer, latest pickups and so much more!

On this episode of the Smuggler's Galaxy Podcast, Glen is back from this toy show and tell us what it was like to be there. How were the crowd levels? How were the prices of vintage Star Wars items? At the same time as Joefest, Jason attended a Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors (GASWC) meetup. This is a monthly event where people who share the same Star Wars collecting passion meet up in the Atlanta area to hang out and share what they've been up to. Well, it's summer, and the thwack of leather on willow is heard on village greens across England. Or it would be, if it wasn't raining. But, that doesn't dampen the spirits, as the lads select their first XI Star Wars action figures to put on their whites, step up to the crease, and try not to get caught leg before Wicket. Oh, and Rich does his best to explain the rules of cricket for those (like Jason) not in the know. After a brief catch-up on Obi-Wan on t'telly, the team looks ahead to the Andor series, which starts streaming in August. What do we know, and what do we expect? Listen in, and find out. Pete's quiz takes us into the Valley of Death as the lads feel the heat in more ways than one. A quick canter through the lads' latest purchases leads on to the Action Figure Face-Off, where Paploo, Squid Head and R2 Sensorscope do their best to overturn the firm favourite Luke Skywalker. Will our favourite farmboy find favour and come first? Some rare and wonderful new acquisitions are discussed, from across the Star Wars galaxy, before Rebel Briefings looks at putting the ‘con' into conventions, stolen images, troublesome tickets, larging it at London Film & Comic Con, and an exciting e-book launch. We're delighted to be joined this month by special guest Narayan S Naik who tells Rich about his amazing collection, focus collecting Boba Fett, Luke Jedi and Yoda, the Georgia Alliance collecting club, conventions, and much more, in a wide ranging and fascinating discussion. The boys wrap up in party mood, with an in-depth look at this month's licensee Deeko, a British company which made Star Wars paper cups, plates and table ware, and reminisce about birthdays in the 70s and 80s. All this and the usual bluff, bluster and banter! Look for the podcast in all the regular places.

How Georgia's Latinx community is seeking to ‘out-organize' voter suppression

Georgians went to the polls in record numbers during the May 24 primary ahead of the crucial 2022 midterm elections, despite renewed GOP efforts to suppress the votes of the state's communities of color. Passed in the wake of the 2020 elections, inspired in large part by former President Trump's baseless claims of election fraud, Georgia's SB 202 (the Election Integrity Act of 2021) is perhaps the most egregious example of Republicans' nationwide efforts to roll back voting rights through a flurry of restrictive voting laws. Such laws disproportionately impact people in low-income communities and communities of color, and they are being passed at a moment when the power of communities of color to shape election outcomes is rapidly increasing. Case in point: Georgia's Latinx community has grown by 30% over the past decade and now comprises 10% of the state's population. In this on-the-ground report for our special series “Defending Democracy in the 2022 Midterm Elections,” TRNN's Jaisal Noor and Jeffrey Moustache speak with organizers from the Georgia Alliance of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO), an advocacy group that helps Latinx voters unlock their political power, about how they are working to “out-organize voter suppression” by mobilizing and empowering the state's Latinx community.Read the transcript of this report: https://therealnews.com/how-georgias-latinx-community-is-working-to-out-organize-voter-suppressionPre-Production/Studio: Jaisal Noor, Jeffrey MoustachePost-Production: Jaisal Noor, Jeffrey Moustache, Cameron GranadinoThis story is part of a series that was made possible with the support of the Solutions Journalism Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rigorous and compelling reporting about responses to social problems.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

Longtime vintage Star Wars collector and "Swag King" Narayan S. Naik hosted Saturday's meetup at his home, where attendees were treated to an afternoon of games and competitions, a top-shelf food truck lunch, and a tour of his collection, appropriately titled “Mos Atlanta.” For many, it was a much needed return to the in-person events, especially after a long year without them. Join host David Quinn for a conversation with Narayan, as he recounts what it was like to prepare and host part of the Georgia meetup, and the blessings that come from a collectors weekend. In Narayan's own words: “Star Wars collectors are a rare breed . They're like the childhood friends who you never knew you had. The ones who shared the same experiences and who can complete the sentences you start with any conversation. The friends who you may only have known for a few years but feel like you know for a lifetime. As soon as the weekend started, it felt like I was with the people who are my close friends and family again. The events themselves didn't matter, as along as it was with the people who I had missed seeing for so long. It was Shakespear who once said “To Grade or Not to Grade, that is the question.” On this episode of the Smuggler's Galaxy podcast, Glen and Jason dive into that question and try to provide answers. From U-Grade to preservation, they discuss why some items might be a good candidate for grading, the difference between some of the grading companies, and talk about their favorite graded items. As always, they talk about the news this week, the latest events in the Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors, and why Jason is once again in a spending freeze.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smugglersgalaxy) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/smugglersgalaxy/support
