This episode is all about roll-ups – and we're not talking about the fruit snacks you had in your lunch box as a kid. No, we're talking about rolling up SMBs. You know the playbook: Buy a bunch of small businesses, whack them together, take it public and make a tonne of money. I've been feeling the itch to do some rolling up myself. And this pod, I scratch that itch with the great Dr Glen Richards, Australia's king of the roll-up. You know Glen. He's the founder of Greencross Vets, a roll-up of vet clinics, and a chairman of Healthia, a health care roll-up. He's also a director of a bunch of companies, which I'll let him share with you. Glen's also a Shark… yep, you might also recognise him from his time as a panelist and investor on Shark Tank.Roll-ups might sound easy (and delicious) – but as Glen explains this episode, getting it right is actually harder than you think.Alright, let's get into it.Links:Keep up with Glen Richards on LinkedIn.Subscribe to Stark Naked Numbers on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher or wherever you get your pods. In this episode Jesse chats to Dr. Glen Richards. Glen is the Founder of Greencross Vets, the Founder of Pet Barn, he's been a Shark on 3 seasons of Shark Tank Australia. Glen is one of Australia's wealthiest people, and this episode is not about academic theory, Glen has lived experience in starting and running business. In this conversation Glen explains some of the fundamentals of running a dental practice, not just to grow it … but to scale it. This is an absolute Masterclass in how to grow your business, how to think like a business owner, how to operate your business better, and (most importantly) how to increase your results and profit. In this episode we discuss: [8:01] - Writing a business plan the Glen Richards way. [14:09] - Glen describes the teething problems you'll encounter in growing and scaling your practice. [27:50] - How do you grow and build your people and culture. [36:20] - Going from Professional Services … to Retail. [42:21] - The Shark from Shark Tank explains how to ‘pitch' your business idea. Adrian is the co-founder and CEO of Pitchblak, a company that helps business founders prove their ideas, get funding and launch companies that disrupt things. And yes, it has proven chops. Glen Richards, of Shark Tank Australia and Green Cross fame, reckons it's the best model for getting new ideas off the ground that he's seen. And that's big kudos. But what does any of this have to do with your Unfound Fears? Well, quite a bit. In episodes 1 and 2 we talked about what happens chemically to your body when you feel fear, and on a macro level, why the fears you feel about doing certain things are almost always worth it in the end. But in Adrian's work, he sees people experience tens, maybe hundreds of fear micro-moments a day. And that, he says, is a good thing. The right thing. Because what better way to overcome fears than in a bunch of small steps, rather than a massive leap. So in Adrian's experience, little victories and non-biased results are the things that help push your fears aside when you're starting a business. And like the theme from the rather excellent 80s sitcom Step by Step suggests, it's done in increments, not giant leaps. Some could say the giant leap is starting the business in the first place. But the thing I like most about Adrian's approach is this: it's the non-biased results that create your little victories, not hype. That first order, that first investment in marketing, turning a customer complaint into a positive, launching your website, buying your domain, even hiring a virtual assistant - they're all little steps that get fear off your back bit by bit. And, as Erin Hegarty said in episode 1, exposure is the best way to defeat the things that stress you out or produce anxiety. Doing them again and again in small steps makes them automatic.

You may know Dr Glen Richards as the 'growth guy' from Shark Tank Australia. He's also a successful leader and entrepreneur in his own right, having built a successful veterinary practice which grew to a number of practices, before 'thinking big' and bringing together other practices under the banner of Greencross. As co-founder and CEO, Glen oversaw incredible growth which culminated in Greencross being listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Today, Greencross owns and operates Australia's largest network of veterinary practices with over 150 clinics including general practices, speciality and emergency centres, pathology labs and pet crematoria. Greencross is also Australasia's leading speciality pet care retailer with over 200 stores, operating under the brand names of Petbarn and City Farmers in Australia and Animates in New Zealand.

For those of you who have listened to episode 1 with Ryan Tuckwood, you may remember he also has a business partner in Jack Corbett, who is the other side of both ISR Traning and Corbwood & Associates, based on the Gold Coast. This down to earth pair were actually on Shark Tank recently and managed to secure investment from Andrew Banks, Steve Baxter and Glen Richards which has enabled them to grow quite exponentially in a short time from the foundations Jack, Ryan and their team have been building for about 3 years now.I caught up with Jack, again at ISR HQ in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast and got to pick his brains on all things business, sales and mindset. Jack came from humble beginnings and was able to achieve what most people would identify as success, which was getting himself into a position where he didn’t have to go to work anymore. What was intriguing is that what proceeded was one of the more depressing and perhaps slightly destructive periods of his life, something he will put into context far more eloquently than I can.If you want to know what it’s like to start, scale and sell a business, secure investment from some of the most savvy people in the game and where your head needs to be, then I think you’ll get a lot out of this one!And if you do get something out of this, please free to give us a rating or a review and I’ll feature a shout out to you on the next episode!LinkedIN: Jack Corbett (The best way to connect with Jack)Matt:@matt__fay@narrativehub
If you're a fan of Australia's Shark Tank you'll know exactly who Glen Richards is, but do you know his story, and how he went from an outback kid growing up on a property in Western Queensland, to listing Greencross Vets on the Australian Stock Exchange? He is a country boy at heart and as Glen put it, there's no room for arrogance or ego if you want to be a success in business. Today Glen and I talk about: How his first business plan was developed on the Trans Siberian Train trip out of Moscow, with a group of Ukranian businessmen, drinking vodka for a full week. How his initial business plan morphed from a single veterinarian practice in Townsville to a network of vet hospitals across Australia. Masterminding and brainstorming with like-minded business people. Benchmarking Listing on the ASX and why they didn't wait until everything was perfect. Why it's impossible to know it all and why you need to know when and who to bring into your business. If you start to think you know it all, you're in trouble. The Vision It's important to have a big vision and you need to have a real passion for what you're doing. You need to have a story worth following and when you do people can't help but follow. People want to be part of the journey. Problem Solving When you're faced with a problem it can be very uplifting for you and the team when you solve it. There's always a way around a roadblock. Reset You need to bring your team together for regular business resets. You need to work on critical issues that are important. You need to highlight your strengths and identify your weaknesses and use these projects to take your business forward. You should do a business reset every 90-days and if you're in the tech industry it should be done every 30-days. Competition You need to be aware of your competition and know what they're good at, so you can neutralise it, but don't get hung up on them or spend too much time watching them. In the end, it's all about quality care and professional work, regardless of your industry and there are always going to be people saying you're doing something wrong. Monday Morning Tip Do not turn on your computer when you first get to your desk. Before getting bogged down, spend some time making sure you know where you're going to focus your time today. You only have a certain amount of time and money, therefore apply it to the most important project first and prioritise your time. Put your time into your #1 thing. Vet surgeon, business owner, and entrepreneur Dr Glen Richards knows a thing or two about success in the business world. Appearing as one of the sharks on Channel 10's hit show Shark Tank Glen believes that it's critical to invest in the successes of the future. In this conversation we chat about how a long train ride was the catalyst for a business plan that saw him become the Managing Director of national company Greencross and later co-founder of a company under which the well-known Petbarn sits; offering end-to-end services and care for companion animals. Glen continues to help foster early stage businesses including his Shark Tank investments through active mentoring, investing and strategic planning sessions. He regularly does public appearances and speaking engagements in the business community to share his scaling up story. Down to earth and real we talk about the essential non-negotiables to managing energy and relationships in business. It's not an easy road but one that requires decision and discipline. Glen has these and a generous spirit in bucket-loads.

We all know Dr Glen Richards as the founder of Greencross Vets, not to mention he is also one of the Sharks on the TV show “Shark Tank”. Glen’s entrepreneurial journey is inspiring and impressive and probably why we all know him so well. My conversation with Glen delves slightly from his conventional story. We start our chat taste testing a Monday Food Company pumpkin loaf, one of Glen’s portfolio companies, I had cooked the day before. This launches us into a conversation on where food is going, why we should be interested in our health and the price you pay for quality. Glen also delves into: what other investments he has that solve a problem surrounding food or nutrition; why he decided to join Shark Tank - and Steve Baxter’s role in his decision; how he now uses his experience - successes and hard learnings – to benefit the next waive of CEOs and founders what life is like post Greencross. Thanks to Glen for giving up his time to come on the show and to Vmation for their fantastic filming as always.
Last week I spoke at a 2-day event in Brisbane called IN BUSINESS IN HEALTH and Glen Richards, one of the Sharks from the Australian Shark Tank, gave a 45-minute presentation about his journey from a country kid in western Queensland all the way through to becoming the newest member on the Shark Tank. It was an inspiring story and it made me realise that success is possible for anyone willing to put in the hard work. Some of the information and success traits shared by Glen Richards overlapped with an upcoming podcast episode I recorded recently with Wilson Lawrence, which is scheduled for release in about a months time. Wilson Lawrence and I talk about 5 Ways to Approach Adversity and I thought these five traits fitted in perfectly with Glen Richards story, so I've taken a snippet from my upcoming podcast with Wilson and thought I would share it in this weeks Five Minute Friday because the information is so good. 5 Ways to Approach Adversity 1. Have confidence 2. Keep perspective 3. Schedule Action (Have Intention) 4. Ask for help 5. Honour the struggle Successful People Also Show The Following Traits 1. They are prepared to put themselves out there. They take risks. 2. They are willing to work harder than most people. 3. They are willing to take advice from others, not just when times are bad. 4. They associate with like-minded positive people. 5. They never forget where they started, and they know where they're going. I hope you found this short episode helpful and if you have any questions please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com or you can visit my website www.tysonfranklin.com and leave a comment. This week's episode is another mix-tape of some great conversations I've had on the podcast. This time we're focusing on people who managed to turn the thing that they love into reality, and what it took to make that happen.First up is Ben St. Lawrence, an Australian middle-distance runner, a two-time Olympian and an all around interesting guy. Ben’s not the first Olympian I’ve had on the show, however his story - his particular triumph over adversity and refocus of his life is one worth hearing. After Ben we'll hear from Jane Lu, the founder and CEO of mammoth fashion startup Showpo.com. This is easily one of my favourites - because everyone loves a story of triumph. Of closing the door on something in order to open unknown other doors, leading to the life you really want to live.Next is Taylor Steele, one of the most iconic and prolific surf film makers of our time. Through his film Momentum, released in 1992 - a then twenty year old Taylor captured a new and dominating style of surfing that hadn’t really been seen before as he filmed young surfers that would go on to become household names in the surf world: Shane Dorian, Rob Machado, Taylor Knox and of course Kelly Slater. Finally is the amazing Dr Glen Richards. Glen is a vet, entrepreneurial mega-success and a shark on the Network Ten hit show Shark Tank. It's Dragon's Den in the UK and Shark Tank everywhere else. He grew Greencross from a single vet practice to an ASX-listed company with clinics and pet stores all over Australia. So please enjoy this mega-episode of the show, about the origin stories of great successes. May it give your day some uplift, and maybe even inspire you to create something amazing. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This episode features Dr Glen Richards. Glen is an investor on Shark Tank Australia, Non-Executive Director of Greencross Ltd and Non-Executive Director of 1300 Smiles. In this episode we cover politics and Glen's view on the current political climate, what it took to push through particularly hard financial times in the early days, how he survived as CEO in a company where his CFO wanted him fired, his work as an investor, avoiding entrepreneurial seizures and how he got on Shark Tank Australia. Glen was one of the most humble people I have met and it was truly an enjoyable conversation. He is particularly candid on how he 'pushed' through some very difficult times in his career. A fascinating man, I hope you enjoy this discussion. My Favourite Quotes from the episode are: "The epiphany I had as CEO was that I didn't have to know everything and that caused almost an overnight change" "Performance equals freedom" "You have to have some self doubt so you ask yourself some questions which helps to derisk your business as you go forward"
Dr Glen Richards is a vet, entrepreneurial mega-success and a shark on the Network Ten hit show Shark Tank. It's Dragon's Den in the UK and shark tank everywhere else. He has an incredible story, and has some very powerful and interesting views on euthanasia. He's someone who's compassionately ended the life of thousands of incredibly loved but suffering pets - and we start to discuss what it would mean for our society if we looked at people's suffering in a similar way. If you're at all triggered by such a conversation, once you hear us talking about states that permit dr assisted death, skip ahead 7 minutes and you'll emerge safely on the other side. This is also a great chat because I got the feeling that Dr Glen and I come from different sides of the political spectrum, yet we found so many commonalities. And I think that's important to remember in this world where our political parties are so ideologically divided - there's way more in common than we think. Enjoy this chat with a 100% stand up human, Dr Glen Richards. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
