Today, James is joined by Robyn and Jay the Engineer to talk about romantic and business relationships. They share personal stories of moving from friends to being in love and discuss how intimacy works in different kinds of relationships, including those at work and in the community. A key focus of our discussion is the intriguing idea of moving from the 'friend zone' to deeper, more meaningful connections. We delve into the importance of sustained, escalating, reciprocal, and personal self-disclosure in building intimacy. This exploration is anchored by insights from the research paper "The Experimental Generation of Interpersonal Closeness," which sheds light on the patterns essential for developing close relationships. Below is the full list of 36 questions for "closeness-generating", taken from the paper:1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest? 2. Would you like to be famous? In what way? 3. Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why? 4. What would constitute a "perfect" day for you? 5. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be? Set II 13. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future, or anything else, what would you want to know? 14. Is there something that you've dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven't you done it? 15. What is the greatest accomplishment of your life? 16. What do you value most in a friendship? 17. What is your most treasured memory? 18. What is your most terrible memory? 19. If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why? 20. What does friendship mean to you? 21. Conversely, the authentic person is not interested in how they come across because they are unconcerned with their image. “People who bluff habitually overcompensate, so you can uncover a bluff instantly by noticing how someone tries to appear.” Relationships: Whenever David speaks to couples, he's always on the lookout when the word we is conspicuously absent from the conversation. We are attracted to positivity. It reflects humility. "Humility connects you to the ownership of mistakes." Humility can recognize a weakness in self. The difference between a sociopath and a psychopath: A sociopath has no conscious. They are very dangerous. A psychopath's wiring is off. They were born that way. Life and career advice: Find a passion that contributes to the world. Don't get too caught up in image or ego. "You can be anything. you're good at. as long as they're hiring." -- Chris Rock

In February 2022, Stuart and William, co-hosts of the well-established The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast, launched the new mini-series 'Indigenous Voices'. For this next instalment, they were joined by Chase Iron Eyes for an interesting conversation, when they revisited a listener question from Adriana in The Netherlands, which was originally discussed in this podcast episode Direct Action, Does It Work? Chase Iron Eyes is an American Indian activist, attorney, politician, and a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He is a member of the Lakota People's Law Project, and a co-founder of the Native American news website, Last Real Indians https://lastrealindians.com/. Chase talks about the systems of law, economy, government, media, all being designed, and these systems are framed to protect capital and property. He explores with us how corporations can destroy a river, but seemingly not face the ramifications, together with telling us about the history of his people, how they've been labelled as barbarians and heathens. He talks of the defence of Mother Earth and how we have it within ourselves to avert this climate crisis. To continue this new mini-series (Indigenous Voices), the question put to Chase was, "Does direct action get anyone, anywhere?" with a subtle extra question of whether Chase has any examples, from personal experience, of what doors have been opened, or closed due to direct action? More episodes in the Indigenous Voices mini-series will be recorded in due course with Chase and others, often only available to watch/listen by our Indigenous Champion support tier backers, on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/thepeoplescountryside You don't need to be an expert in the subject matter or in indigenous cultures to enjoy our new mini-series. Just a willingness to explore the unknown, the hard truths, the indigenous viewpoint, and see where it takes us. What can we learn from them and what can they learn from us? What can we learn from each other? Join us then for this interesting, and often philosophical episode of the podcast. You'll likely need to watch/listen to this more than once, as there's so much in there, and much learning to be gleaned from Chase's wise words. This podcast's overall themes are nature, philosophy, climate, the human condition, sustainability, and social justice. Recorded November 19, 2021 Have you ever wondered why you work in AV? Well, here's the Top Ten reasons. It's a listicle and we love that. Oddly, it says you don't need an advanced degree but that AV is challenging. Weird. Then to the larger topic at hand: Metric AV. Wait, no. The metrics of AV. That is, how do we measure success? Jamie kidnaps people. Larry spies on them from the bushes outside. Marc puts together focus groups. Justin tells them only what they can't do. And Chris designs everything by powers of ten. But seriously, there are many quantitative ways to measure a functioning AV system, but what about the qualitative? Listen on! Finally, Chris went digging under his couch cushions and found $100,000 and wants help spending it. Despite Marc's best efforts, we're going to focus on the stuff! But for good reasons. How would you spend an extra $100,000? Article discussed: https://www.ravepubs.com/top-10-reasons-to-work-in-av/

Learn how to prioritize your customers' needs and the benefits of a comprehensive understanding of your company's customer experience. Recognize and leverage the math behind marketing, and get your sales and marketing teams working together to produce better results for your company and your customers.Key Takeaways:Prioritize what the client needs — what's important to your customer — ahead of what's important to your marketing team, your sales reps, and even your company. Why is what you have important to them? What problems can your product or service solve for them? Putting customer needs first is the key to long term success. We say marketing is 50% art and 50% science. Today, the science of marketing is all about data and math. Potential customers can find a lot of information about your company without ever involving you, so they're about 70% of the way to deciding on your product or service before your sales rep is invited to the table. To figure out what they're looking for, marketers should recognize and utilize relevant data analytics.Sales and marketing are two sides of the same coin. In some companies, the culture pits them against each other, but they both work better — more efficiently and more effectively — when they're part of the same team. Sales reps can rely on marketing to create content with the information potential customers want and need, and marketing can get content direction, such as FAQs, from the sales team.Hope you enjoyed this episode of B2B Mentors! Mike Koenigs hates “How Pies” (if you're from Minnesota like him, you'll get this joke right away). If you grew up in the country like him, cow pies aren't fun to step in. Especially the warm ones. “How Pies” are the stinky things you step in every time you ask yourself “how do I do this” and when you get frustrated and procrastinate, you do nothing at all. What if you could solve ANY problem you've ever had by asking a NEW question? Not “How do I do this?” But “Who can do this FOR me?” And if your first response is, “yeah, but I can't afford to pay anyone to do it for me…” Instead, ask yourself the ULTIMATE question - “what if I could create a collaboration with the right WHO to do this for me where both parties win?” If you find yourself procrastinating because you get stuck in “How Pies”, you're in for a real treat. Today's guest on The Big Leap is Dr. Ben Hardy and he's the author of the new book, “Who Not How,” which sold over 100,000 copies (125,000 as of two days ago) in the first month and is a bestseller on the Wall Street Journal list. Today you'll hear a fascinating story that ties “Who, Not How” and writing a bestselling book with a collaborator into two places, plus Gay says ONE WORD that completely changed the way Mike thinks about copywriting and creating content and books. And - if writing a “best selling book” is on your bucket list…you'll love what Ben has to share. Today you'll hear a fascinating story that ties “Who, Not How” and writing a bestselling book with a collaborator into two places, plus Gay says ONE WORD that completely changed the way Mike thinks about copywriting and creating content and books. As Western thinkers, we're very individualistic. We go through the public education system and are trained to think the same way. We're trained to focus on what “I” can do. We have to develop every single skill ourselves and are tested and graded against our peers in a competitive environment. We don't work with our peers on a test and then together, create a better result… Instead, we're all tested on the same thing. We compete against each other to see who gets the best grades, and the people with the best grades move on. We're trained to think in terms of how “how do I accomplish this goal? What do I do?” Me, me, me, me me! Two of Dr. Ben's mentors, Dan Sullivan and Dean Jackson spent a lot of time thinking about procrastination and that ultimately led them to think about when you start imagining a bigger future; if you stopped asking how but started asking who can help me do this, or who can do this for me, then all of a sudden, it frees you from the burden of having to do it yourself and leads you to develop a much bigger vision. Most people's imagination is capped by how much they can do themselves. If you're not teaming up with anyone then you can't accomplish as much. In the case of Dan Sullivan, (co-author of “Who, Not How”) he didn't have to spend any of his time writing the book because he had Dr. Ben do it. He had a “who,” who was already an expert on book writing, so his vision for his future got a lot bigger. Rather than asking, “how can I get this book out there, he just found a “who” to do it for him.” One massive breakthrough that Dr. Ben had while writing this book as the “who,” is that Dan Sullivan fully allowed him to just be the who! Meaning he let him BE the writer without any outside forces or influences. It was Ben's book. Dan established the rules for the content and let Ben do his thing. It's Dr. Ben's AND Mike's opinion that a lot of leaders have problems because they micromanage their “whos.” They're obsessed over making the who do the how their own way, rather than letting the who do it their own way.Dr. Ben had a lot of freedom writing this book but it took him a long time to actually realize he had that freedom. For a while, he was trying to write the book that he thought Dan wanted him to write but at some point he realized… I'M the who and I need to write this book. No one else knows how to do it. He finally took ownership of that in his head, which allowed him to write the book he wanted to write.THAT was a really profound moment for Dr. Ben and it allowed him (when he hires people) to let them take full ownership of what their job is, rather than him telling them how to do it.Here's something else super important: Ben gets all the money from the book. Dan only cares that the book drives business to Strategic Coach in terms of adding members. His singular focus makes this easy. The books pay for themselves. That's another one of Dan's big ideas, a “Free Zone” which we'll cover in another episode! Here are a few other major take-aways and breakthroughs from Ben's journey in writing this book: Mentors: You need to learn from someone who's already been where you want to go. Someone you admire and trust. For Dr. Ben, it started with his Grandfather Rex who was “the moral structure of his life and always pointing him in a positive direction.” He's had many others including his church mission presidents, college professors, Ryan Holiday, (who has written multiple best-selling books), and mentored him while helping him get his book agent and first book deal, Dan Sullivan, Joe Polish, and more recently Tucker Max, as a writer and a thinker. Collaboration: The basic premise behind “Who Not How.” Collaborating with the right “whos.” In the case of this book, Dr. Ben worked with a few “whos,” including Tucker Max who he met at a Genius Networking event to negotiate a 10 book contract with Hay House and edited the book. Living in the FLOW: Being more fully absorbed in what you're doing. When you're in a flow state, you're operating at peak performance, not inhibited by 1000 different things and dealing with decision fatigue. (the idea that the more decisions you have to make in a given amount of time, the more stressed your willpower will be, and the more you'll make poor decisions.) Delegating: Offloading your decision fatigue to let other people make some decisions for you. There are only a certain amount of ‘big picture' decisions that you should be making. For example, during Dr. Ben's last book launch, he did 250 podcasts to promote it but he hired someone to book and schedule all of his appearances so all he had to do was show up and talk about the book. To hear about Ben's one HUGE, mind-blowing idea (based on an old idea called, “1,000 True Fans”) that was responsible for GETTING OTHER PEOPLE to sell about 75,000 copies of his new book in two weeks, PLUS… the ONE WORD that Gay said that completely changed the way I think about writing and creating content, listen now!
Most people are horrible listeners. Within 48 hours of hearing a 10-minute presentation, most people can only recall 20% of what they heard. By the time a person is in high school they're listening to less than 30% of what they hear and when most people listen, they're so preoccupied with what's in it for them that they fail to recognize important clues. And, to top it off, unless you have one unique personality trait, you'll never master being a good listener. The secrets about listening are all revealed in this episode.
