These are times that call on a radical belief in oneself and their community. Back in October just shortly before the US Election, I interviewed Rev. Dr. Andrew Wilkes about his book Plenty Good Room, which invites the Black Church to think beyond electon cycles and go to the root of how it can be a radical force in not just American politics, but the wellbeing of all of us as Earthlings.Yeah, timely. Unfortunately, because of the recent US Election and regime change, it took me a minute to prepare this episode for you, but it's here now and ready. Plus, my beloved partner Les Henderson joins me for a moment of reflection on faith and will be joining me in our next few episodes. Here's Rev. Dr. Wilkes's bioReverend Andrew Wilkes, Ph.D., is a pastor, political scientist, writer, and contemplative. He is the co-lead, co-founding pastor of the Double Love Experience Church in Brooklyn, New York, and the former Executive Director of the Drum Major Institute, a social change organization founded by Rev. God is preparing a feast, and whether we like it or not, God reserves the right as the host, and convener, and furthermore, as the one who has paid the price to invite whoever He desires to sit down at His table. None of us has a say in who God invites to His table. In fact, when we get to heaven, many of us will be surprised by who we see there. There will be some we thought would make it who won't be there, and others we didn't think would who'll be sitting right there. And that's because God and God alone can invite whomever He chooses to have access to the Kingdom. This edition of The Bunker podcast comes from our old friend Blacklauren, recorded live at The Bunker at Good Room in July 2022, when he opened for DJ Nobu and Wata Igarashi. Mastered by Russell E.L. Butler. artist statement: "At some point during the late months of 2013, a close friend at the time sent me a podcast mix to listen to from a young Japanese DJ who was completely unknown to me at the time - Wata Igarashi. This same friend coincidentally took me to my first Bunker party a few months prior & I became a regular attendee from that night onwards for many years. In the early spring of 2015, my collaborative partner and I, collectively known as The Long Count Cycle, were asked to do a podcast mix for The Bunker as well as an invitation to play the party following it's release. For us, this was monumental and just when we thought things couldn't get any better, we were invited to play Rural festival and Dommune in Japan that summer based on our mix. One of the artists on the lineup was Wata Igarashi. I was excited for many reasons but also because I now had the opportunity to tell him in person how phenomenal I thought his mix was. We spent quite a bit of time together during that trip and became friends. Additionally, I gained a new perspective on techno seeing how he performed and the sonic palette necessary for creating states of psychedelia and euphoria. In the years following, we would cross paths several times at Nowadays, Good Room & Sustain Release. Each time, I left with a deeper understanding of the music and my place within it. So when I was invited to open for him and the exceptional & exemplary DJ Nobu, there was a visceral sense of validation in being entrusted to set the tone for what was to come that night. Please enjoy, listen on headphones or a system that can carry bass weight, “turn on, tune in, drop out”.

Anthony Thalassinos is the head chef of George Calombaris' new restaurant, The Hellenic House Project in Highett, a bayside suburb about 35 minutes from Melbourne's CBD. I think you would have to have been under a rock if you didn't know that George Calombaris had opened a new restaurant and I, like many was following the lead up and opening as well as the star-studded diners, such as Nigella Lawson and Gordon Ramsay who have been sharing their love of this new venue on social media. What I love about the Hellenic House Project's own social media is that it seems important to them to introduce the whole team as being part of a family who believe in the same things and want to share a sense of community as well as celebrating Greek culture. Anthony is introduced third post in as the head chef and “a proud Greek-Australian with a wonderful background cooking in some of Australia's best restaurants.” Obviously, my interest was piqued. In Dani Valent's podcast, Dirty Linen (side note, happy third birthday to that glorious podcast), Calombaris tells her that he has told everyone to keep an eye on Anthony because he has a really good feeling about him, that he's “ambitious, he's driven and he's a way better version of George Calombaris.” When I arrived at The Hellenic House Project, Anthony showed me around the more casual downstairs Kitchen and then we went upstairs to the more elevated dining space, The Good Room and explained that, three months in, they are far busier than they would have expected and are having to renovate to create more space and another kitchen. Anthony is one of those chefs who exudes passion for the industry. I found his enthusiasm for cooking, the hospitality community and for The Hellenic House Project intoxicating and I was hanging off his every word. There were countless moments in this conversation where I think I had the goofiest smile because what Anthony was articulating was absolute gold. I can't wait for you to hear this conversation and I can't wait to go back to The Hellenic House Project for dinner.

NYC's Andrew Devlin takes a break from his usual dance floor facilitation to offer us a poolside soundtrack inspired by a recent stay at The Standard hotel in Miami Beach. Q. Where do things currently sit on @thelevelparty front, and what other projects have you been busily chipping away at? A. What's that line? “We've been coming to the same party for 12 years now, and in no way is that depressing.” I think we're nearing 10 now. In any case, the party feels like it's in a really good place. After doing it more or less solo for a minute, I brought 5 residents on board who I love dearly–Alien D, KFeelz, Nigelthreetimes, No Sir, and Yibing. Everyone has so much range and energy, it's been special getting the group together. I'm really excited for our Glen Falls House weekender upstate in July (14-16). We get to take over this little hotel in the woods for a weekend and stretch out. It's a dream. Big shoutout Josh Houtkin at Good Room for all his work making that a reality. Past that, we've got some shows at our usual spots, Le Bain and Good Room, as well as a couple of day parties at Public Records' new Nursery and a July 4 BBQ at Mansions. Would really like to bring the group of us to some other cities soon. I dream about heading back to New Orleans, doing Level Miami, Level Mexico City, Ibiza, etc…Anyone reading this wants to get in touch, let's build ;) Personally, I run a small sound company here in NYC, so I'm trying to grow that business and maintain my sanity. I'd like to get back into making music soon, even just a few cheeky edits. Start a podcast (I know, I know). And eventually open up a venue. A pub of sorts with good food and music. Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when putting the mix together? There is, in fact, a pretty specific one. This mix is dedicated to the pool at the Standard in Miami. I went in January for the first time and recorded this when I got home. The vibe there is so strong. You're sitting outside, eating the best caprese salad of your life, there's a 2' iguana crawling on a palm tree, you've got a green juice or a margarita in one hand. Everyone is having a good time and partying in this really respectful way. They're just sipping on a cocktail or walking to the hot tub or making out in the pool. I thought a lot of that had to do with the soundsystem and the music programming–there are speakers everywhere (including underwater) playing at like 6/10 volume. The music is on a sort of soulful r&b/ balearic tip. I was on Shazam all weekend. So this mix is a dedication to that–if someone gave me 80 minutes to DJ the Standard Miami pool, this is what I would play. Q. Are there any records in the mix that are particularly close to your heart, or old favourites that you've been keeping up your sleeve for the right moment? A. Definitely. To run through a couple… ”Wall Street” I discovered reading Dub by Michael Veal. Great book for anyone interested in DJ'ing, soundsystems, production, etc. I got really into Jackie Mittoo reading that, and have been playing that track since. The Lauryn Hill track, “Sweetest Thing” I heard in a coffee shop in Amsterdam in 2009, forgot about completely, then recently re-discovered. “Don't Break my Heart” is a big song for my wife and me. We both stumbled on it when we started dating at the beginning of 2020. We almost chose it as our first dance at the wedding, but thought the lyrics were a little dark. Anyway, big tune at the house. And the last track, the Mike Huckaby remix, is close to my heart. I was lucky enough to meet Mike a few years ago and gave him a ride to his hotel after a gig. He had just played for 3 hours and all he wanted to talk about was my Volkswagen Jetta. He was really such a sweet, warm guy, and this track always makes me think of him. R.I.P. Thanks so much for having me on this! Been a huge fan of MDC for a long time, and the radio shows and mix specials got me through lockdown over here. Means a lot to be a part of it. Much love.

We finish the second series series of the podcast with music promoter Joe Kelly from The Good Room. Stephen talks to Joe about his extensive career in the music scene in Cork which began in the early 90s at the iconic Sir Henry's, to today hosting the much loved Live at St.Luke's.Joe is a self-professed 'blow-in' from Galway who came to Cork in the late 80s to study at UCC, and he has never left. He started his career as a DJ at venues across Cork that led to him organising his own successful club nights with Denis O'Mullane including the very popular Mór Disco in Zoe's and Telefunkin in Metropole Hotel. Those nights kickstarted a vibrant career in music promotion which has seen him either run or co own infamous Cork venue's such as the Bodega, The Savoy, The Pavillion & others that no longer exist today. Joe talks about the highs of booking some of the worlds greatest acts but also the lows when the businesses had to close like the Pavillion did in 2014. Joe has played a vital part in the music & culture scene in Cork and today he keeps doing it alongside Ed Callahan at the Good Room. Today they are the maestro's behind Live at St.Lukes, one of Cork's most unique music experience as well as the It Takes a Village Festival and several others that are too long to mention. They are also the team behind the Cork Podcast Festival - one of the first festivals of its kind in Ireland that makes a triumphant return this year. We have a lot of entertaining nights in Cork to thank Joe for over the years. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

QRTR is an electronic music producer and DJ based in Brooklyn, NY.Brooklyn's Meagan Rodriguez, aka QRTR, learned how to use CDJs in a smoky discotèca an hour before DJing in front of a crowd of dancing Portuguese club-goers. She returned to the same club years later, but this time, she had her own original music to share. Bouncing between high-energy DJ mixes and hypnotic original live sets, QRTR has shared the stage with the likes of Tokimonsta, Tiga, Phantoms, Galantis, and Oliver, to name a few. QRTR has performed at some of New York's most renowned nightclubs, including The Brooklyn Mirage, Output (RIP), Good Room, Elsewhere, and Bossa Nova Civic Club. In 2018, she debuted her live setup while headlining at Brooklyn Bazaar — weaving together an hour-long live journey of remixed original tracks. While her Brooklyn home base will always be número um, QRTR has toured internationally, performing in Portuguese open air clubs and smoky Parisian lounges. Enjoy x
Since I was unable to travel to the US this weekend due to a spectacularly badly timed positive Covid test, I got on the decks in my bedroom and hit record. Nowhere near as fun as the shows I missed at Flash in DC, Good Room in NYC, and Smart Bar in Chicago, but if you were planning to hit any of those then stick this on for a taste of what I was gonna play. Hope u enjoy the mix. In episode four of The Good Room, Janine Kennedy speaks with institutional food expert, author and activist Joshna Maharaj about simple changes we could make to our hospitals, colleges and prisons to bring hospitality and nutrition back into the food being served. She also chats with Jacinta Dalton, who heads the culinary schools at ATU (formerly GMIT) in Galway about how she has changed the way she sources ingredients for their culinary students.
A recent trade show story painfully illuminates what can happen when business professionals don't pay attention to customer body language. Reading the room is a skill set that can be learned. However, reading the room can become less important if you plug in a simple, client- engagement protocol. Welcome back, gang. this episode is a hybrid - music-filled mostly, and some conversation up top with the one and only Latane Hughes, followed by, starting around minute 16, a mix of songs assembled by Latane with a bit of help by yours truly. Latane is a music lover. We've been friends for 13 years now. I met Latane in college -- and along the way, he's been a friend, a consistent source of energy and inspiration, and also a source of music knowledge and influence. Many of the best music-oriented experiences that I've known have been thanks to him. Latane is a booking agent who manages the touring careers for a roster of 30+ musical acts, representing artists from all over the globe and specializing in booking shows in the North American territory. By night, by morning, by all of his other times it seems, Latane is scouring the digital and physical planets for music that he shares in mixes like these and as a DJ with the Fundido duo and Earth Beath Team. Thanks for tuning back into the jalapeno. Enjoy! -- track list: Donald J.
