Meet Tommy Womack! I love this guy! He's an extremely talented musical and literary creative that let's you into his head and heart without filters. His head and heart, by the way, are very interesting places...you should visit the souvenir store on the way out. Founder and front man for the 80'-90's rock band from Bowling Green, Kentucky, Government Cheese, Tommy shares a few stories about his time with his friends Billy Mack Hill, Joe Elvis King, and Skot Willis. Tommy shares intimate details in this credible rock history tome. The Cheese Chronicles. (Buy it at this link). Note: I ate a lot of the other government cheese when I was a kid on welfare.  It's great on white bread with the government peanut butter. Here's a cheesy tidbit. The U.S. government has 1.4 billion pounds of cheese stored in a cave underneath Springfield, Missouri. But I digress...In this episode, Tommy shares stories of his early years, including the horrors of high school and how those formative years informed much of his musical and literary creations. His first books were written in junior high on a vintage typewriter that he says his preacher father stole from the church and brought home so his mother could get her GED. But there are so many more stories... Tommy and I dropped a lot of names in this episode. They include several wonderful Nashville talents that you may want to (no, you should want to, dang it) learn more about. Tommy Womack, I Got No Place to GoTommy Womack, You Don't Get Over LoveThe Easy Button, Fast OnesThe Easy Button, Waiting RoomThe Forresters, Back In My ArmsThe Forresters, Are You Ready (2021 edit)The Great American Novel, Coulda Fooled MeThe Great American Novel, Man of TomorrowNick Frater, It's All Rumours,Nick Frater, Buggin' OutDavid Brookings, Keep It RealDavid Brookings, Mania at the Talent ShowSteve Conte, Wildwood MoonSteve Conte, Those Sexy Lies

Eddie Spaghetti & Frank Meyer, My SharonaThe Lolas, If I Don't Do It (It Won't Get Done)The Lolas, All You Have Is FireBrent Seavers, Out In The RainDany Laj and The Looks, SmileDany Laj and The Looks, Don't Keep Me Guessin'Andrew Taylor and The Harmonizers, Not Running OutAndrew Taylor and The Harmonizers, Life Is GoodJesse Malin, Dance With The SystemJesse Malin, The Way We Used To RollTommy Womack, Pay It ForwardTommy Womack, I Got No Place to GoDavid Woodard, GhostsThe Brothers Steve, Wizard Of LoveThe War on Drugs, Occasional RainExplorers Club, Somebody Meant For Me

Today's guest is Tommy Womack, a founding member of the band Government Cheese who rocked the south in the 80s and 90s, filled college radio playlists, had a video in rotation on MTV, and have recently revealed a exciting piece of news that we will get to at the end of this episode. Since Government Cheese, Tommy has drawn critical acclaim as the co-founder of the bands, Daddy and the Bis-Quits, who recorded a 1993 album with John Prine's label, Oh-Boy Records. His critical acclaim is not in small part due to his willingness to be brutally honest about who he is and what he is dealing with. This transparency is evident in his many solo Americana albums and in his books, , Cheese Chronicles : The True Story of a Rock 'n' Roll Band You Never Heard Of and Dust Bunnies: a Memoir. Both seem to have helped him work through issues with addiction and mental health and he readily shares, while displaying an innate ability to turn a phase and make you laugh. In this episode we learn of his want and most recent moves to playfaster, harder and louder. I think you'll agree that Tommy, with a big dose of truth and a whole lot of humility - knows exactly how to grab that string and fly that kite.NOTE: This episode contains adult language

387 - Tim Krekel Originally broadcast on the radio many years ago, the Tim Krekel interview is being brought out now. This is an interview recorded in the hotel room of Tim Krekel prior to a performance he did with Marshall Chapman and Tommy Womack. A man from Louisville, Kentucky, he was born October 10, 1950 and he passed away June 24, 2009. Tim Krekel was a singer, songwriter, guitar player and by all accounts a very kind, sweet man. He was a very unique recording artist and had a unique sound that was a nice blend of rock, country, some blues and what they now call Americana. Krekel wrote songs that were recorded by other people: Alan Jackson, Crystal Gayle, Martina McBride, Patty Loveless, and he also toured with Jimmy Buffett as a member of the Coral Reefer Band. he wrote a song with Jimmy Buffett called Morris' Nightmare that appeared on the iconic live album "You Had To Be There!" He wrote with a lot of great songwriters: Marshall Chapman, Matraca Berg, Danny O'Keefe and others. I hope you enjoy this interview with a great artist who has left us all with incredible songs.

My guest today is Tommy Womack A Singer-songwriter, author, humorist and Kentucky native Tommy Womack got his start in 1985 to 1992 with legendary Bowling Green based post-punk and college radio faves, Government Cheese (who’s story is immortalized in Tommy’s cult classic book “Cheese Chronicles”).  Upon moving to Nashville in 1992, Tommy’s become known for his long working relationship with Will Kimbrough, starting with their bands the bis-quits (who made one classic album for John Prine’s Oh Boy label in 1993), and their band Daddy, who have made two albums and enjoy a cult following. Since 1998, Tommy has released seven solo albums, the latest being the brand-new “Namaste”. He looks forward to the back half of 2016 with new songs from that record to play, in addition to such proven past show-stoppers as “Nice Day”, “Vicky Smith Blues” and “Alpha Male & the Canine Mystery Blood.” In addition to “Cheese Chronicles”, Tommy is the author of the comic Civil War novella “The Lavender Boys & Elsie”, and the recently published “Dust Bunnies”. In Nashville, the greatest guitar town in the world, Guthrie Trapp is at the top of the mountain. He can range across every style, improvise with endless invention and subtlety. He can shred or twang or drift elegantly. And most of the time, he's a sideman and studio player. A player in demand for being able to serve and enhance a song and do no more than what's called for. But he's also a mind-bending solo artist. And his second LP as a leader and composer came out this spring. It's called Life After Dark. Trapp has worked with Patty Loveless, Dolly Parton, Jerry Douglas, Garth Brooks, Rosanne Cash and many other greats. Currently he tours with John Oates in his solo configuration. But Guthrie's  work as a leader ranks up there with the best guitar music being made today. For years he's led his own small group at a variety of Nashville venues, where he can really stretch out, refine his originals, indulge in some favorite old songs. He put out his first solo album in 2012, called Pick Peace, and it's an entirely instrumental project. This new one mingles instrumentals with guest aritists taking star turns on vocals - Jimmy Hall sings the blues. Charlie Worsham and Vince Gill sing country classics. Bekka Bramblett offers a stunning take on “I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.” It shows how much reverence he has among his peers in music city. I like what acoustic Americana star tim O'Brien says about Guthrie. “He'll blow you away but he'll never wear you out.”

Under the circumstances, The Coal Men felt more like comfort food, with their gorgeous tones and tight roots rocking structures. Dave Coleman writes pop songs with the story quotient of country songs, so we got “Stones River” about old friends/mentors and a wintry outdoor setting. And “Willy Jett” is a portrait of the demise of a semi-loveable loser. Dave encouraged us to think of it like a little movie, and it was. More story in my favorite song on the new Pushed To The Side album in “The Singer From Louisville,” which channels a piece of Tommy Womack fiction that is drawn from hard experience. Guest host Peter Cooper worked with the Coal Men and other artists to pull together a really nice take on Dave Dudley’s “Six Days On The Road,” which hasn’t been a Nashville Jam in years. Great call and a great job.

Free mix training with Lij at MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Robin Eaton, a songwriter, producer, poet, and artist from Nashville TN. He owns his own studio, Club Roar, and is also co-owner of Alex The Great recording with Brad Jones who was my guest on episode 34. Beginning as a songwriter and artist signed to Warner France and then Ze-Island records in NYC, He was also in the original Broadway production of Hair. After moving to Nashville in the 80s and building Alex The Great, Robin went on to co write and produce Jill Sobule’s self titled record with the hit single “I Kissed A Girl” about ten years before Katy Perry’s song of the same title. In 2005 Robin and I co produced The Spinto Band’s Nice And Nicely Done, and then later KS Rhoads Dead Language. Some of his other credits include: Butterfly Boucher, Tim Easton, Tommy Womack, Lion Limb, Swan Dive, and Mary Kate Oneil.   But more importantly Robin is my mentor. He took me in and showed me how to make records at Alex The Great, and has been a creative inspiration and friend to me for 20 years. He even officiated at my wedding!   Get the full show notes at http://RSRockstars.com/62

Once again it's podcasting time! This go 'round Tommy Womack came a spend part of his afternoon talking to us and singing for us. He's been in bands you might have heard of, Government Cheese and the bis-quits. He plays amazing solo shows, recently bring spoken word into his sets to amazing effect. He's written a couple books, The Cheese Chronicles and The Lavender Boys and Elsie (which isn't yet available, so after you listen to this call your favorite publisher and beg them to make this book available to you, though you can read parts of it here, on Tommy's site: http://www.tommywomack.com). His new album, There I Said It! is available now and full of songs he might describe as being full of middle-aged anxiety, politics and not a little joy. They are surprisingly universally applicable, given the subject matter. We sat down with him on one of the first lovely crisp days of fall, talked about growing up, touring, his books and songs and his life. During the set he played: Alpha Male & the Canine Mystery Blood Waterloo Sunset (The Kinks) A Nice Day I Couldn't Care Less Cockroach After the Bomb I Miss Ronald Reagan This is definitely a 'cast not to be missed.
