Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Friday, Oct. 6 A popular Harpers Ferry family resort expands, with guidance from the WV SBDC…Plan a leaf-peeping getaway to Babcock State Park…and Bluefield purchases two food trucks for graduates of the MyBluefield Entrepreneur course…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV SBDC – Only one hour from the DC and Baltimore Metro Regions, River Riders Family Adventure Resort in Harpers Ferry offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, from whitewater rafting to zip lining. More recent additions to the property include snow tubing. With up to 12 different tubing lanes, their snow tubing is fun for kids of all ages. River Riders' snow tubing hill is almost 3 football fields long, making it the longest tubing slope on the East Coast. But River Riders was not always a year round outdoor and recreational company. Owner Matt Knott worked with the West Virginia Small Business Development Center to make that happen. Knott started working as a raft guide for the company in '94, then bought the business in '98. He started working with WV SBDC in 2012. “I met Matt after I took over this account from my predecessor, Mary Hott,” said Michael Boyd, WV SBDC business coach. The WV SBDC helped River Riders apply for and take advantage of a tax credit program that made the expansion possible. Buy your snow tubing tickets today! Learn more about River Riders. Read more: https://wvsbdc.com/river-riders-year-round-activities-and-fun-with-help-of-long-standing-partnership-with-the-wv-sbdc/ #2 – From WV STATE PARKS – Plan your fall leaf-peeping getaway to Babcock State Park. Autumn brings an added beauty to the region, and the park's oft-photographed Grist Mill looks stunning set against a backdrop of warm fall colors. Park activities include hiking, mountain biking and fishing. Babcock has several waterfalls you can check into on your WV Waterfall Trail digital passport. There's also plenty of things to do in the surrounding area. Located 20 miles southeast of the New River Gorge Bridge, Babcock is a perfect launching point for whitewater rafting, rock climbing and other outdoor adventures in the New River Gorge. It's also just a short drive from Hawks Nest State Park, which offers stunning overlooks of the gorge. Peak color comes around the middle of October. For live updates on fall color at Babcock, visit WVtourism.com/fall. Bluefield WV Economic Development Authority Executive Director Jim Spencer said that creating a business place can be daunting. However, with the MyBluefield Entrepreneur's Bootcamp, everything participants need is provided through the course. “Once they go through the training and graduate the Bluefield Entrepreneur Bootcamp, and a few other things, they are in line. Once they complete their business plan, they are in line for one of these trucks,” Spencer said. Applications are open and still being accepted. Learn more at www.mybluefield.org. Wendy Haslam and her husband Marty love a challenge. With the desire to teach their two daughters and twin sons the value of work, they decided to open Old Grist Mill in Kaysville. Like many local businesses, Old Grist Mill managed to survive and even thrive due to efficient management and safety precautions taken by the Haslams. During the pandemic, they were able to handle increased catering orders, and provide exceptional take-out service as well as safe in-person dining. Wendy and Marty attribute much of the success of their business to the support of the local community. In her spare time, Wendy enjoys her grandpups and looks forward to their first grandchild. She's an athlete and can often be found cycling and laughing with her family and siblings. She may even start a podcast of her own....

In episode 75 of The Cyber5, we are joined by Grist Mill Exchange CEO, Kristin Wood. We discuss open source intelligence (OSINT) use in the U.S. public sector, not only with national security but also with the emergency response sectors. We talk about how open source intelligence has evolved in the last ten years and talk about how adversaries use open source intelligence against us. We also discuss how the U.S. needs to catch up with not only how to operationalize OSINT in meaningful ways, but how the U.S. government can procure bleeding edge technologies in a more time sensitive manner to meet mission requirements. Three Takeaways: Open Source Intelligence Has Evolved From Just Foreign Media; It's The New All-Source Intelligence The national security sector traditionally used open source intelligence as translating foreign media particularly during crisis situations. Now, open source intelligence is being leveraged in many ways like all source intelligence - the integration of human, signal, and imagery intelligence. Interconnectivity of devices has led to a commercial “goldrush” to aggregate data and sell it to public and private sector clients. China is Remarkable at Open Source Intelligence Using Autocracy as an Advantage China and Russia are collecting open source intelligence at an unprecedented level against the U.S. including what's commercially available and through computer network exploitation and data exfiltration. They are aiming to reframe the U.S. using disinformation as a powerful tool. They have been very successful in leveraging online disinhibition effects against the U.S. populace. The United States Public Sector Needs an Overhaul in Procurement Authority The U.S. private sector has a lot to teach the U.S. public sector in terms of learning consumer behaviors and how to pair that with commercially derived data, such as device fingerprinting, to extract valuable insights for national security purposes. To accomplish this, analysts need to be able to circumvent cumbersome government procurement buying cycles.
