Join us for an exciting conversation with inventors Michael Weiss-Malik and Elizabeth Dell, co-founders of Groove Thing, a way to bring music vibrations inside your body, an astounding invention. They say it's a way to "transform your body into a concert hall." Not a sex toy, not a musical instrument, it's more of a tactile music experience and a synthesis of music and sensation. For older adults, it's an experience of pleasure for many types of bodies -- it's low impact, and it's about letting the music radiate inside the body. B. Cox is joined once again by Van Everette of The Scenario Radio Show to review 90s R&B duo Zhané's debut album Pronounced Jah-Nay as it turns 30. The two vocalists, Renee Neuville and Jean Norris, met each other while students at Temple University and while they had two different backgrounds when it came to singing, they would find a medium that would make them a cohesive act. After linking up with power players in Philly DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) and doing a showcase that caught some eyes and ears, they were taken under the tutelage of Naughty By Nature producer KayGee and were signed to Motown Records.Combining their many musical inspirations and influences, the group put out a very fun, yet mature sounding album. It was backed by their intriguing and smooth harmonies and deft songwriting over a variety of beats crossing many genres. The album was boosted three singles: the classic party jam "Hey Mr. DJ", "Groove Thing" and "Sending My Love".The album was certified platinum and things appeared to be on the up and up for the duo. However, they released only one other album, 1997's Saturday Night, to less acclaim and fanfare before splitting up. Nonetheless, they made their mark on 90s R&B with their debut which continues to be brought this day as a highlight in 1994.Check out Van Everette and The Scenario Radio Showhttps://www.thescenarioradioshow.com/Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesUDiscoverMusic: Pronounced Jah-Nay: How Zhané Made A Name For Themselveshttps://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/pronounced-jah-nay-zhane-album/Grammys: 'Pronounced Jah-Nay at 25': Zhané's Renee Neuville and Jean Norris look back at their classic R&B debut https://www.grammy.com/news/pronounced-jah-nay-25-zhanes-renee-neufville-jean-norris-look-back-their-classic-rbAlbumism: Zhané's Debut Album "Prounounced Jah-Nay" Turns 25 | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/zhane-debut-album-pronounced-jah-nay-turns-25-anniversary-retrospectiveSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
There is a new list of the uncommon things that we try and normalize.
This is the late 1970s and '80s as explained through the urgent and still-relevant songs of the Clash, the Specials, the Au Pairs, the Style Council, the Pet Shop Boys, and nearly four hundred other bands and solo artists. Each chapter presents a mixtape (or playlist) of songs related to an alarming feature of Thatcher's Britain, followed by an analysis of the dialogue these artists created with the Thatcherite vision of British society. "Tell us the truth," Sham 69 demanded, and pop music, however improbably, did. It's a furious and sardonic account of dark times when pop music raised a dissenting fist against Thatcher's fascist groove thing and made a glorious, boredom-smashing noise. Bookended with contributions by Dick Lucas and Boff Whalley as well as an annotated discography, The Fascist Groove Thing: A History of Thatcher's Britian in 21 Mixtapes (PM Press, 2023) presents an original and polemical account of the era. Hugh Hodges has written extensively on African and West Indian music, poetry, and fiction, including essays on Fela Kuti, Lord Kitchener, and Bob Marley. Linton Kwesi Johnson praised his book Soon Come as "extremely engaging and an important, original scholarly work." He currently teaches at Trent University, Ontario, where his research focuses on cultural resistance in its many forms, and his band the Red Finks remains hopelessly obscure. Hugh's author page for PM Press. Bradley Morgan is a media arts professional in Chicago and author of U2's The Joshua Tree: Planting Roots in Mythic America. He manages partnerships on behalf of CHIRP Radio 107.1 FM, serves as a co-chair of the associate board at the Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and volunteers in the music archive at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Following on from Flavortone's previous episode exploring Excellence, Alec and Nick pick up Charles Keil & Steven Feld's “Music Grooves” to discuss “the Groove” as a political concept that illustrates musical discrepancy and assembly. The episode continues a “back to basics” and “first principles” line of inquiry, approaching essential ethnomusicological ideas such as “Participatory Discrepancy” that describe how a simultaneity of difference can give music its power and meaning. The conversation also discusses riffs and phrases, contrasts the Groove to Attali and Nieztche's ideas of carnival and the Dionysian, creates a comparison between “literary” and “linguistic” musical orientations, re-discusses “Agave Expressionism,” and ultimately describes how the Groove offers an alternate perspective of sound beyond the universalism of western art music and institutional major histories.

Little did Phil Bynes know when he stepped onto the high school dance floor because no one else was that admiring eyes were watching. Thanks to Barry Harris' early morning drop of Michael Jackson's “Thriller” on his Soundcloud page, I was forced to postpone the Halloween Edition 2K14 until now. Mind you, I ain't complaining because his tribal anthem of Michael's classic is EPIC! Besides, this wouldn't exactly be a “Halloween” set if it didn't contain at least one reference to the holiday (without all the stupid spooky filler crap most DJs sneak into their sets). Then again, Halloween always affords me the creativity to make cover art with a hot zombie or guy covering up his junk with a pumpkin LOL. Cast all that aside and what you have is one MONSTER of a set with the biggest tribal anthems of the moment. In short, no tricks …just treats. It's Friday night and I've got other business to attend to, so I'm gonna keep this short. Hope everyone gets out and has a frighteningly fun-filled weekend. Do everything I would do and then some! You've committed to making a change and suddenly, you are faced with seemingly insurmountable fear. Dark, shadowy, and usually hidden creatures show up, bare their fangs, and growl horrifically. You quake in your boots and cower away from the claws that swipe through the air. There are monsters all around you and you are terrified. The more scared you get, the bigger these monsters get, and the more difficult it is to move forward, toward your dreams and goals. You are confused about why they are there and want to hide from their fierce presence. You want them to go away. You want them to leave you alone. Maybe you try different things like hiding beneath your covers, numbing out through substances, or denial. No matter what you do, when you open your eyes, those creatures are still there, staring at you with snarling faces and growling voices, getting ever bigger and ever scarier. On today's show, Angie K. Millgate will be talking about these terrifying aparitions and the reasons they appear. She will share her favorite story that relates to these monsters and contains the skills and tools needed to make them disappear. With compassion and love, she will walk with you down that path toward the monsters and help you release yourself from their grasp. For more information about Angie's work, visit her website: angiemillgate.comThe theme song of Moments of Awakening is "Groove Thing" by Leraine Horstmanshoff and is used with her permission.
