The latest Past Our Prime podcast takes us to the heartland and the beginning of the changing of the guard in college basketball. 1975 would be the last season for John Wooden and his UCLA dominance, and the Indiana Hoosiers were set to claim their spot atop the college basketball world. They would go 31-1 in '75 and follow that up in 1976 with a perfect 32-0 and the first National Championship for Bobby Knight. In 1975, the Hoosiers had 4 All Big-10 players in Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, Scott May and Steve Green... and yet on the cover of that February 3rd issue 50 years ago was none other than John Laskowski... The Super Sub. The senior guard from South Bend was the first guy off the bench for Coach Knight and a main reason for the teams success. Half a century later, he still can't believe he was the guy on the cover of SI. But Laskowski was emblematic of what his coach was preaching. A team-first attitude where you left your ego at the door and went to work doing whatever was needed to win. And they won a lot... 37 consecutive Big-10 wins in fact, still the most ever in conference play... by a large margin. Laskowski went on to play in the NBA, and then was an analyst for Hoosiers basketball for years and he says much of that is because of the legendary Knight. Much more than just a coach to Laskowski, Bobby Knight was a mentor and an impactful man for the rest of his life until his death in 2023. He negotiated Laskowski's NBA deal with the Bulls, helped him get his TV job for IU and got him into the movie Blue Chips starring Nick Nolte. Laz tells us about a side of The General we rarely saw... He tells us about an assistant on that team that went on to become the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history... and he tells us about how Notre Dame rescinded their scholarship offer to him and how devastating that was to him before it turned into a blessing of a lifetime. It's a great talk with a great guy that was the first one off the bench for Coach Knight and on the cover of SI in 50 years ago today but in the POP starting lineup. On today's episode of Setting The Pace, Alex Golden is joined by Chris Denari to look at the Pacers first week of play and share what's been good, what's been bad, and what this team can learn from the games they've played. Chris shares some insight into the Pacers trip to Orlando, why he is a fan of Raising Canes, whether or not Quinn Buckner is ready to let a smothered chicken out anytime soon and what makes Quinn so beloved around the league. Here are the questions we discussed during the podcast: -Will the win against Boston be the turnaround this team needs from their slow start? -Bennedict Mathurin was a key contributor in both Pacers' wins: Can he and does he need to sustain a high level of play overall for the Pacers to have success? -What are the protocols on reporting injuries in game - Andrew Nembhard exited game against Boston with a knee injury -TJ McConnell's playing time in Orlando reduced. Will Pacers elect to rest him on back-to-backs? -Will the Pacers need to add a center to their roster with the Wiseman injury and Myles already missing a game with an injury? -Why has Tyrese gotten off to a slow start? What are the biggest differences you see in his style of play and how teams are defending him? -Early season thoughts on Pascal and areas you'd like to see him improve or the team improve around him? -Biggest issues you've seen with the Pacers team early on in the season? Universities across the country responded to pro-Palestine encampments and protests in a variety of ways this summer. In July, Indiana University implemented an Expressive Activities Policy, joining schools like the University of Pennsylvania and University of Southern Florida in creating new restrictions for protest on campus. The policy – technically called UA-10 - introduces a clear ban on camping, which effectively outlaws the Liberated Zone in Dunn Meadow. It also prohibits expressive activity within 25 feet of the entrance to any building or parking lot and between the hours of 11:01 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. Indiana University Board of Trustees chair Quinn Buckner introduced the final version of the policy at the July 29 meeting. A group of pro-Gaza demonstrators from Dunn Meadow sat quietly in the audience carrying protest signs. Buckner said the policy was necessary to keep the university nimble in light of “an environment that has changed dramatically in the last 10 years.” He said the issue is student safety. Some students and faculty have criticized the policy, saying it will limit the right to peaceful protest and restrict other benign activities. Others supported it but asked for changes before it passed. This week on Noon Edition, we'll talk with experts on freedom of speech, policy, and higher education about policies about assembly and protest on college campuses. (00:00 - 25:50) - Brian Noe is in for Jake Query, alongside Jimmy Cook the two open the show giving their memories of Bob Knight who passed away yesterday at the age of 83. Knight had his fans and detractors but as a coach had a fire that led him to be one of the best college basketball coaches of all time. Knight had a generational impact on the game from the players and assistant coaches he influenced. Jimmy places Knight on the Mount Rushmore of College Basketball coaches. Knight was a unique coach who was both ahead of and behind his time in multiple ways. (25:51 - 45:52) - Former College head coach for Manhattan, St. John's, New Mexico and basketball commentator Fran Faschilla joins the show to reflect on the life of Bob Knight. He talks about how Coach Knight scouted his own team and then gave the information to them later. Fraschilla says if you beat Knight the right way, he'd shake your hand and it meant something. Fran believes that Knight did more to revolutionize coaching in basketball in the last 50 years than anyone else in basketball, alongside Dean Smith as well. A final story regarding Fran's time doing commentary with Knight. (45:53 - 48:17) - Brian plays a clip in regard to another coach that he believes also applied to Coach Knight and the fire he had as a coach and competitor. (48:18 - 1:12:18) - Steh Greenberg of ESPN joins the program and gives his thoughts on the late Bob Knight. He says that while Knight was a very demanding coach, he always managed to pull the best out of his players and form good relationships with them. Greenberg says he was able to make a lot of players' lightbulbs go off and put the pieces together to make his players better. He acknowledges that coach Knight had his detractors and rightfully so, but says it always was with good intent. Greenberg recalls Knight's "Pain in the rear" story. Knight had a big amount of respect for coaches that came before him. He says that Knight's biggest legacy on basketball can be found in the size of his coaching tree. (1:12:19 - 1:24:04) - Audio from other coaches around sports and their thoughts on the passing of Bob Knight. Quinn Buckner, a former Knight player, shared his thoughts on his passing during the Pacers game last night saying that he will be dearly missed. Steve Kerr head coach of the Golden State Warriors said coach had a huge impact on the game, even as the center of attention for good and bad reasons. Multiple organizations from a variety of sports put statements out on the passing of Coach Knight. Although Jake Query could not be on the show today, he had a piece on Knight's legacy put up on 107.5 The Fan's website. (1:24:05 - 2:07:03) - The spot starts off with Jimmy and Brian talking back and forth on some Twitter threads regarding Bob Knight. Tim Brando of Fox Sport joins in mid-segment to reflect on the life of Bob Knight. Brando recalls a time in which he was thrown out of practice by Coach Knight. He and the coach had a very heated introduction to each other, but as Brando stood up for himself a mutual respect developed. (2:07:04 - 2:22:40) - Matt Taylor, radio voice of The Colts joins Brian and Jimmy, to talk Colts vs. Panthers on Sunday. Before getting to that Brian asks Taylor for any of his memories regarding Bob Knight. Taylor says that childhood was all about trying to get to go see as many great basketball games as possible during IU's era of dominance. The Colts talk begins with Taylor reflecting on his knowledge of Frank Reich when he was a Colts coach. He thinks that it will be a tough game down to the wire, but the Colts will be hungry to try and snap a three-game losing streak. (2:22:41 - 2:37:35) - More talk between Jimmy and Brian on how Coach Knight was bigger than basketball. If you went anywhere in the world and said you were from Indiana, Bob Knight was the first name others brought up. Teams are constantly chasing the legacy of the 1976 Hoosiers. Will IU Football be playing with a little extra fire this week? Bob Knight launched Indiana on to the map during a time when smaller communities in Indiana needed it most. (2:37:36 - 2:42:16) - Wrap up talk and JCooks plays of the day.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

December 22nd, 2016: Boston Celtics try to make it two in a row in the Hoosier state against Paul George and the Indiana Pacers.
Training camp is now less than a month away and Labor Day is next week. The summer is winding down which means the NBA season is right around the corner. Which gives Celtics Beat ample opportunity to preview some conference rivals for the Boston Celtics in 2016-17. Quinn Buckner, longtime NBA veteran, former Celtic, and current Indiana Pacers color commentator on FOX Sports Indiana is back on the CLNS Radio airwaves once again to give a primer on the Pacers and their off-season. No team outside of Oakland added more talent to their roster this season than Indiana. What kind of challenges will there be to get all these pieces to mesh? What other weaknesses do the Pacers have that the Celtics could exploit? And would Paul George, being the best player in a potential playoff series, knock off teams like the Celtics and God forbid, the Cleveland Cavaliers? It doesn't end there. Coach Jack Armstrong of TSN also stops by to talk about the Toronto Raptors, and their quiet summer which was highlighted by retaining DeMar DeRozan and signing former Celtic Jared Sullinger. Will that cut the mustard? Jack is a huge fan of the Celtics off-season and a huge fan of this Boston team. He also believes the Raptors took a step back this year. Does that mean he believes the Raptors will surrender the Atlantic Division to Boston? Find out on this week's Celtics Beat. Brought to you by Blue Apron, audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, and American Farmer's Network. Available for download on iTunes and Stitcher on Sunday, August 28th 2016. Powered by CLNS Radio.
It’s one of the true rarities in team sports: perfection. For men’s college basketball, the last group to achieve this feat was Indiana University – 40 years ago. The starting guard and co-captain of that revered 1976 squad recalls the close calls encountered on the road to 32-0, how the team of the previous season was equally – if not more – capable of also going unbeaten, as well as the Hoosiers’ accomplished and intense head coach, Bob Knight. March 1st is finally here. The light is at the end of the tunnel. Spring is just around the corner, as is the end of one of the tougher Boston Celtics seasons for fans to endure in recent memory. But things won't get easier as a brutal March awaits.
