The new Hayao Miyazaki film has garnered strong reviews, winning Best Animated Feature from the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics and has now been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score for Miyazaki's close collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The world-renowned Japanese composer has scored all but one of Miyazaki's films, and his latest is receiving considerable praise. Hisaishi was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about his work on the film, which you can listen to below. On 30 March 2023, Deutsche Grammophon announced the signing of an exclusive agreement with Joe Hisaishi, the revered Japanese composer whose work has become synonymous with the magical Studio Ghibli animations of director Hayao Miyazaki. Spanning the full spectrum of Hisaishi's work as composer, conductor and pianist, the deal will deliver a richly varied range of audio and audiovisual recordings. As season 3 of The Film Scorer podcast slowly comes to a close (only a few episodes left), Chad Cannon (Ghost of Tsushima: Iki Island) joins the show! Chad and I primarily talk about his latest score, which is for the documentary miniseries Algiers, America, following a high school football team in New Orleans (the Edna Carr Cougars). The score mostly features Chad's modern classical compositions, as well as some New Orleans-centric elements that Chad crafted with a few local musicians. As such, Chad talks about the challenge of scoring around three hours of music, visiting New Orleans to get in touch with the city's musicality, and balancing various musical elements, styles, and genres. Along the way, we also cover Chad's prolific work in the documentary scoring arena, carving out a bit of a specialization within the field (although he has done a number of fiction films, series, and videogames as well), and how and why the public reception to documentary music differs from that of music for other media. Finally, we briefly touch on Chad's work in arranging for legendary composer Joe Hisaishi, and Chad's upcoming project in which Hisaishi is providing the main theme. You can find out more about Chad on his website. Algiers, America is currently on Hulu, and while Chad's score is not yet available, many of his other works are available digitally on all major platforms.

This massive concert featured performances of these signature Miyazaki film scores composed by Hisaishi, conducting from the piano, and the 200-member New Japan Philharmonic World Dream Orchestra, along with six featured vocalists, the 800 combined voices of the Ippan Koubo, Ritsuyuukai and Little Singers of Tokyo choirs, plus a 160-piece marching band. Altogether there were some 1160 musicians and singers on stage, backed by images from Miyazaki's films projected on a giant screen. These performances were recorded and broadcast by NHK in two versions - an edited 1-hour version aired on NHK on 31 August, and the full concert aired on the NHK satellite channel BS2 on 23 September 2008. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released R2 DVD and Blu-ray versions of this 2-hour concert in Japan on 3 July 2009.

A beloved Japanese anime move released in 1988, My Neighbor Totoro tells the story of two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, as they deal with the separation from their mother who is in the hospital, and their adventures with the forest creatures they meet called the Totoro. In Joe Hisaishi's Soundtrack for My Neighbor Totoro Soundtrack (Bloomsbury Academic, 2020), Kunio Hara analyzes the film’s score and image song collection composed by Joe Hisaishi. The movie’s catchy theme song, along with the rest of the music, contribute to the film’s nostalgic exploration of children’s inner lives and the power of imagination to combat the very real traumas of childhood. Part of the 33 1/3 Japan Series, this short book explores the collaboration between Hisaishi and Miyazaki Hayao, the film’s creator and director. Hara considers his subject from a variety of perspectives, from a musical analysis of key sections of the score and image album to an investigation of the film’s importance as an icon of Japanese pop culture. Kunio Hara is an Associate Professor of Music History in the School of Music at the University of South Carolina. His research centers on nostalgia, exoticism, and Orientalism in late Romantic opera and music in post-war Japan. Kristen M. Turner, Ph.D. is a lecturer at North Carolina State University in the music department. Her work centers on American musical culture at the turn of the twentieth century and has been published in several journals and essay collections. Learn more about your ad choices.

Miyazaki, Takahata, Suzuki, Hisaishi. Episode #10- Theme Music Sweeping strings, driving drums, blasting horns; theme music is the non visual character that seems to drive emotion. From earworms to anthems, massive orchestras to 8-bit, there's a world of sound and Rock, Paper and Scissors want to take it on. First they start with Williams, Elfman, Carpenter, Hisaishi, Marricone and other big movie hitters. They switch to an almost endless list of TV themes that range from moody and mysterious to goofy and ridiculous. Flipping from TV to games, Yuzo Koshiro, Koji Kondo, Nuo Bouematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda, and a slew of others from Capcom dominate the conversation. Game time- Elfman vs/ Williams Paper pits Scissors and Rock against each other in this thematic face off. Dumpster Dives- Trolling through the dumpster could leave you singing the blues. However, our podcasters seem to always resurface singing the praises of their loot. Scissors ascends with Improv Everywhere, a website that showcases the group's hilarious exploits. Paper crests with a humorous webcomic slung over a shoulder, Oglaf. And Rock summits with Tales from the Crypt, a much missed television series.
