MIRACLES FOR YOU Sondra Ray & Markus Ray on A Course in Miracles
THIS IS A LONG PODCAST about the Laws of Healing. Markus Ray goes through these facts in this Section VII of Chapter 26. We must undo the notion of "sin" which implies "guilt," which demands "punishment" in the form of sickness. "Sin," in its most extreme case, is forever uncorrectable. Our Original Innocence is our Reality. This is the awareness that restores our mind to sanity, and thus is the only true Law of Healing that we must embrace. Even though we made mistakes, we are still completely Innocent. Illusions have no real effects, even though our various symptoms of "sickness" seem so real. Even "death" is an illusion that the notion of "sin" has made up as an "inevitable result." When are we willing to let go of our illusion of separation? Forgiveness is the only means by which we can rejoin what has never been separated in Truth. We are the Holy Sons and Daughters of God. This Reality brings with it the perfect health of Heaven that is God's Will for us. We JOIN each other in this "wish" that is in alignment with the Will of God—which is perfect happiness for us.
Both prolific and philosophical, while also containing potential, Emil Amos is a legend in the world of music, art, culture and existential expressionism. A career that spans back some 30 odd years, Amos first began his jarring journey in music during his college years in NC, where he also met his longtime friend and cosmic brother, the great comedian, Duncan Trussell. Throughout the decades, Amos would go on to establish his solo outfit Holy Sons, the mighty Grails, Lilacs & Champagne, jumping on the chrome throne for OM and his impeccable podcast called, Drifter's Sympathy. We explore the depths of the chronic psyche, the immeasurable impact of the punk scene throughout the 1980s, more specifically Ian MacKye, and the landscape of emotion, motivation, meditation and perseverence as Amos takes on an ancient journey that begins and ends all at once in this epic practice in connnection, communication and cosmic camaraderie.

MIRACLES FOR YOU Sondra Ray & Markus Ray on A Course in Miracles
THE LAWS OF GOD would make every relationship Whole. Each one may be unique, but one is not more Holy than another. The faith in our brothers is total. Each brother is worthy of our reverence. Everyone has his or her own perfection. Holiness is shared, and we gain the Strength of God when we are looking toward the Perfection of each person. Everyone is deserving of God's Love, and to have the strength of God we cannot hold anyone "outside" the scope of God's Grace. God is the Strength in which I trust, and the Idea I am holding about myself can be changed. I can change the idea of being "weak" for the divine idea of my sacred strength. We unite the Idea of Perfection with our own perception of our Holy Self. This is the Freedom to be who God created us to be. We are the Holy Sons and Daughters of God. This is God's Law in truth.

This week on the show, we're joined by Sam Shepherd, AKA Floating Points. His discography is full of beautiful and strange electronic music—bubbling Buchalas, skittering beats, washes of synthesized sound, and even moody, spacious post-rock. But underneath it all, his love of jazz is clear. In 2021, he teamed with an actual jazz legend: the late Pharoah Sanders, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra for Promises, a single 46-minute composition broken into nine movements. Though the artists were separated by decades in age, their approach is simpatico. Just as Shepherd has moved between genres and styles, so did Pharoah. His early work with John and Alice Coltrane established him as a dynamic, sometimes frighteningly intense sideman, and his first run of records, including 1969's Karma, featuring “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” helped set the stage for what we now call “spiritual jazz.” But Sanders, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 81, cared very little about what genre you filed his records under. “I just play whatever I feel like playing,” he told The New Yorker. Sanders stayed restless and creative—listen to his playing on Sonny Sharrock's masterful Ask the Ages or his works with Bill Laswell, and you'll hear what we mean. In 1977, he waded into deeply personal waters with the self-titled Pharoah, which will be reissued by Luaka Bop on September 15th. Exploring new age adjacent sounds, funk, and passionate ballads, it's a radical departure from his early work, but perfectly in keeping with Sanders' unpredictable ethos. Likewise, Promises is hardly the “back to basics” late career album you might expect an 80-year-old artist to make. It's its own thing, a meditative sojourn that relies on silence as much as sound. And next week, on September 20th, Floating Points will be joined by past Transmissions guest Shabaka Hutchings, as well as Caribou, Four Tet, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and others for the first-ever staging of Promises live at the Hollywood Bowl. Ahead of that show, Shepherd joined us from his studio to discuss his his years collecting records, making Promises—and we even got him to reveal Pharoah's favorite place to eat in LA. Welcome back, thanks for being here with us. Emil Amos of the Drifter's Sympathy podcast is with us today on Transmissions. Perhaps you know his work with OM, Grails, Holy Sons, or the records he releases under his own name, like Zone Black, his latest record of library style sounds, synthy 80s soundtracks, hip-hop beats, and ambient music. It evokes a mythic ‘70s—an area we linger in this conversation. You might also know Emil from his many appearances on The Duncan Trussell Family Hour, a podcast I really enjoy and listen to often. We lean a little into that spacey, open format in this episode. On September 22, Emil's band Grails releases their brand new album, Anches En Maat. Ahead of the album's release, we caught up to discuss a life in music, the virtue of doing it your own way, and much more in this conversation. Rev. Jeremiah Johnson, pastor at Glory of Christ Lutheran Church in Plymouth, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Deuteronomy 14:1-21. Israel's status as sons of the LORD is the foundation for all that the LORD gives them to do. The LORD has made His people His children as a gift so that they are holy in the same way that He is holy. He has chosen them to be His treasured possession, completely by His grace. This reality leads Israel to live as God's holy people in the matters of their mourning practices and in their diet. They are not to mourn as the pagan nations around them, but they mourn as those who have hope in the LORD. The foods prescribed by the LORD as clean are good not due to something inherent within the food, but due to the LORD's command and promise. Though these dietary laws do not apply to Christians today due to Christ's word and fulfillment, still we live as God's people in all that we do because He has made us His holy children. “The Law of God is Good and Wise” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Deuteronomy. Though Moses' lengthy sermons in Deuteronomy may be tempting to skip, this influential book is essential reading for Christians. As Moses strengthened Israel on the plains of Moab before the people entered the Promised Land, so the book of Deuteronomy still strengthens the Church as we prepare to enter the Resurrection with Christ, the Prophet greater than Moses.
In episode 42 I talk to multi-instrumentalist Emil Amos from Holy Sons & Om about the forgotten loner music of Jimmy Campbell, an English musician and songwriter from Liverpool, England. He was a member of Merseybeat groups The Kirkbys, The 23rd Turnoff, and Rockin' Horse, as well as releasing three solo albums.

Holy Sons is a one-man solo band built around Portland songwriter and drummer Emil Amos. Amos is notable for releasing "genre-bending" albums, according to LA Weekly music reviewer Chris Martins, and for being a prolific songwriter; one account in Spike Magazine suggests he has written over a thousand songs. Amos is also a multi-instrumentalist for groups such as Grails and Om and Lilacs & Champagne. Amos was born of the lo-fi home recording movement of the '80s and early '90s. Amos described the mission of his music as "facing your personal reality." Amos said in an interview that, beginning at age sixteen, he used drugs every single day and didn't let up for years. A music critic for The Guardian described him as a prolific songwriter and as having a "great voice". Reviewer Rob Cullivan of the Portland Tribune described Holy Sons' album Survivalist Tales to be an "ode to the dime novels in the early 1900s that peddled the stories of wilderness explorers," and described the music as "sonic wanderings" with "strange song structures." A review in the Portland Mercury described his music as "dark, languid psychedelia" and commented how Amos has "habitually been kept underground" with few live performances up until the last few years. His vocals have been compared to Neil Young but change personalities quite often. Willamette Week described the album Decline of the West as "a varied, meticulously constructed piece of avant-folk that stands.

Emil Amos (of Grails, Om, Holy Sons, Drifter's Sympathy) joins Bob and Mike to discuss the impact of college radio in the '90s, four-track recording, the Ajax catalog, and nearly getting arrested in Australia, plus songs from Reagan Youth, Bumcello, Jim Shepard, Two Dollar Guitar and more.
Today, an experimental three-part episode! First, Britt Walford returns to answer listener questions; then, we turn over the host seat to Britt as he interviews his friend--today's guest--Emil Amos. Finally, Joe picks up where Britt leaves off for a life-spanning conversation with Emil. Emil is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter perhaps best known for his work as Holy Sons. For over twenty years, he has also been the drummer for Grails. After many years in Portland, Emil has returned to his native NC, from which he spoke to Britt and Joe. During the age of social distancing, we're recording remotely and releasing new episodes every day.

This is the story of how the first song on the first Holy Sons record was channeled during a precarious bender and super-faded viewing of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1997. This bender eventually leads to a semi-disastrous conclusion at a party that Emil has some trouble owning up to. The second half of the cast gets into the initial elation we feel when canonizing our early heroes... and then the complex horizon that opens up when we meet the spectre of depression for the first time. Emil meets Gator Rogowski right before he shocks the skateboarding world by committing the most notorious crime in its history (documented in the excellent film "Stoked"). And then Emil experiences the death of his love for the act of skating as depression takes over and music offers the only way out. This cast is soundtracked by the great Chapel Hill band POLVO.
Emil's bandmate Alex Hall from Grails and Lilacs & Champagne is in town from Berlin and they deliver an introduction to "Library Music"... The term goes back as far as the twenties when stock music began to be composed to accompany the first films that included sound. Television companies were able to avoid copyright issues by sourcing music from 'music libraries' and the anonymous players who provided the music were often some of the best in the world. Because the records were never available to the public, Library Music looms large as one of the secret troves of great composition and execution in the world of record digging and sampling. Holy Sons continue their tour with the Japanese band Mono at the Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight!
Duncan wonders if LSD is an incarnation of Vishnu and is joined by Emil Amos (Grails, Holy Sons, OM) who tells the story of the saddest baby sitter, phone sex hot lines, and the time he committed arson.
Today’s guests are indie-rock veterans: Stephen Malkmus (Pavement, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks) and Emil Amos (drummer for Om and Grails and main man at Holy Sons). During the conversation, Amos draws out Malkmus’ story: from his early music fandom in Stockton, California, to college in Virginia to the ups and downs of being a '90s indie guitar god in Pavement and beyond. Their chat also takes in venturing out of their DIY comfort zones to work with big name producers, Elliot Smith’s love of fine recording gear (and his studio size miscalculation), Silver Jews’ David Berman's the Cure obsession, and their thoughts on indie rock's '90s revival. Check it out. Grails LP Chalice Hymnal is out on February 17. American Trailblazers returns and seeps into all new cracks of our abandoned history. In a half-drunken fit of mispronunciation, Emil calls up producer John Agnello to set the record straight on the various producers of the Eagles, uncovers various home tapes by forgotten garage bands and rolls out a few unparalleled epics by would've-been-giants from the genesis of the folk-rock boiling pot. This Episode goes back to the era of the Beatles reign, focusing on lesser known British geniuses in songwriting and contrasting their early work with what became of them down the line. Emil's band Holy Sons are also setting off on tour to support "In the Garden" this week. Here's a link to the brand new record :: http://smarturl.it/HolyGardenCDLP
Episode 4 dives into the history of lesser known American record production and songwriting, uncovers various Neil Young imitators and features a mini-section on the significance and extreme depression of Del Shannon. Under the same spell of classic American records, Holy Sons has just announced a new collaborative record with legendary producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. Kurt Vile). "In the Garden" sets Emil's songwriting into the atmosphere of the kind of early 70's records you'd pull out while slamming whiskeys by the fireplace late into the night (out Oct. 21st on Partisan Records). So, while getting wasted and going deep in the search for a classicism that truly satisfies, Drifter's Sympathy dusts off lost curiosities left by some of the original 'American Trailblazers'.
